Was Ryan Gosling robbed of 'Sexiest' title?

Ryan Gosling

Tuesday night, we were busily preparing for Wednesday morning's announcement of PEOPLE magazine's annual choice for Sexiest Man Alive.

We were preparing for it to be Ryan Gosling. And judging by most of the chatter on the Interwebs today, so were a lot of other people. Except maybe Steve Martin.

No knock on Bradley Cooper -- he is a damn fine looking man who is in no danger of being kicked out of bed for eating crackers. He's also an accomplished actor. He was great in "The Hangover" and "Limitless." My personal favorite was his turn as Sack in "Wedding Crashers." And while his bilingual skills are quite impressive, it didn't melt everyone's heart, and this year that just shouldn't add up to Sexiest Man Alive.

Gosling, on the other hand, has enjoyed a breakout year. He played a troubled man falling in, then losing, love in "Blue Valentine"; the charming cad (my personal weakness) in "Crazy Stupid Love"; and he went head-to-head with perennial Sexiest Man Alive candidate George Clooney in "Ides of March." Oh, and he's, well, gorgeous.

In this share-all digital era, feelings are running high on his "slight." There is currently a petition online asking PEOPLE to admit its mistake. Buzzfeed.com is offering 63 reasons why Cooper is not the right choice. The site is also examining Sexiest's checkered past. #SexiestManAlive has been a trending topic on Twitter all day, but seriously folks, Justin Bieber -- ah, no.

But hey, it's all subjective. One person's sexy is another person's "what-the-frack!?" There are very few stars whose sex appeal alone will get this writer to the theater. Two to be exact -- last year's winner Ryan Reynolds and fellow actor Gerard Butler. Otherwise, I only go to the movies for the stories. And to laugh (hmmm, still Ryan Reynolds). And nobody has yet to match my all-time favorite cinematic hunk -- Ray Stevenson as Titus Pullo in the HBO series, "Rome."

Which begs the question -- which sexy star quickens your pulse enough to plunk down $10 at the box office? Is it Cooper? Gosling? Someone else? Share you choice in the comments below.

No it should not have been Ryan Gosling. His eyes are too close together and he is very plain looking. Stop being a poor sport and poor sport fans. There is always next year... if you think he's all that.

I thought Chris Evans had a decent shot.  After Captain America, his body has never looked better.  Guess I was wrong :(

Javier Bardem - what a sexy looking guy, and I think he really is sexy - anyone see 'Jamon Jamon'?

Brad Pitt in 'Moneyball' - quite the body beautiful.

English actor - Jason Isaacs - sexy and you could talk to him afterwards.

Gosling is a freaking MEME. Of course it should have been him.

I would let either one of them park their boots under my bed (ooops, sorry honey, I mean if I weren't married, of course).

No, Ryan Gosling was not robbed of the "Sexiest" title. Liam Neeson was.

The real question is who gives a flying leap? Is this all we have to worry about?? Some sleazy Kardashian, Beiber as a baby daddy and who's the "sexiest"?? How far down into the sewage can we crawl as a society, anyway?

If you want to worry about who was "robbed", worry about the Middle Class!! Worry about something that actually MATTERS!!

Relax, Grant! Yes, we need to worry about what matters, and yes, the Kardashians and Justin Bieber are entirely overexposed (although the Kardashians do have some really cute clothes in their new clothing line), but very few people want to think about all the bull**** going on in the world 24/7, and things like Sexiest Man Alive and the accompanying debates (or even the Kardashians and Bieber for some people) make a nice break from it.

Hahahahaha...every movie he is in bombs? Please...let's start with his earlier movies...Remember the Titans and The Notebook.  Blue Valentine was an indie that got great reviews and he should have WON the Academy Award for that role.  Crazy Stupid Love was a hit and probably one of the top-2 comedies this year (off of Gosling, not Carell), Drive was FANTASTIC even though it was different that believed, and Ides of March was great too...and he was the lead, that was not a George Clooney movie.

                  You are ridiculous...

Ryan Gosling should have been included in the list, IMHO. For me, Cooper is not the sexiest man alive. Sure he is gorgeous, but he just seems like a pretty face with no substance. I don't follow entertainment news that much, although the things I have read about him don't put him in the number #1 spot. Nice try People Magazine.

                  Jared Leto, Keanu Reeves.

I don't care too much about these "sexiest" man/woman things but Ryan Gosling did really have a cool year... he's a great actor and easy on the eyes... plus he seems like a good guy ...... loved him in Lars and the Real Girl .. but sex-appeal is subjective .... and not that I know him at all ... but I don't think this outcome would be much concern for him .. he comes off a little deeper than this stuff.

This was highway robbery, baby. Ryan is good-looking, talented and he stops street fights. What more could anyone ask?

He never made it big, but Adrian Paul does it for me!

It's a good thing I don't work for People magazine, because I would have a hell of a hard time trying to pick one guy to be Sexiest Man Alive. There are so many guys with so many sexy attributes that I change my mind about who I like on a regular basis. Here in no particular order are some of my 2012 nominees with reasons why they're sexy:

Ryan Gosling-great body, quirky-cute face, wide acting range, funny, seems nice

Ryan Reynolds- same qualities, although his face skews more toward cute than quirky (last year when he won the title he claimed niceness is a Canadian thing-is that why he and Ryan G have the same qualities?)

Jeremy Piven (perennial favorite)-acting range (Chicago theater scene to Entourage to Spy Kids 4 to December's dark indie dramas I Melt With You and Angels Crest), funny, did a very candid Entertainment Weekly interview this July-Google it, recovered from Sushigate well, has something I can't put my finger on that is still very attractive

David Tennant (current fave)-gorgeous eyes, tall (and frankly kind of a beanpole, but he makes it hot), acting range (Doctor Who to Shakespeare to the new Fright Night, where his character's like a cross between Russell Brand and Criss Angel), Scottish accent (hearing it takes all my self-control not to faint), musical talent (he sang on the BBC miniseries Blackpool [which inspired the US's short-lived Viva Laughlin] and in a recent stage production of Much Ado About Nothing), funny, not afraid to make a fool of himself (YouTube "david tennant the friday night project" for proof)

I'll probably come back with more nominees later.

If not for this story, I would never had known that Ryan Gosling is sexy. I wouldn't have even thought of using the term and his name in the same sentence before this.

Ryan Gosling has too much talent to be worried about being the sexiest man alive. He needs to worry about being the next Bogart, Brando, Nicholson. Did anyone see his first movie (?) in which he played a Jew who converted to a Nazi? He should be looking for great roles to play, such as Stanley Kowalski, either on stage or in film. As Stanley he could not only show off his sexy body but also display his acting ability. I actually thought that in CRAZY STUPID LOVE he was auditioning for the role of Stanley, but probably not. Ryan, a word of advice from an old moviegoer---Paul Newman was sexier than just about any actor, young or old, all his life. He focused on his acting career, however, not on his sex appeal. He had a long, distinguished run and still never lost his sexiness.

Gosling is hot AND beautiful (inside and out) in my book!

Rob Pattinson? Ugh, nope. Come on, he's too... thin. But you know, to each his own. Ryan Gosling is incredibly hot and I wanted to be in Eva Mendes' shoes when I heard they're going out. But I also completely adore Bradley Cooper. Loved The Hangover and A-Team. Maybe next year People would think twice.
