'Star Trek' vs. 'Star Wars,' episode 3: Shatner strikes back!

Silver Screen Collection / Getty Images

William Shatner thinks he could still make his original Captain Kirk costume work.

The back-and-forth “Star” battle between William Shatner and Carrie Fisher is far from over — at least if the latest shot from Shatner is any indication.

The man behind “Star Trek’s” Captain Kirk first kicked off the feud when he declared his franchise superior to Fisher’s “Star Wars” efforts in an online video. The actress soon responded in a clip of her own, criticizing all things “Trek” and challenging Shatner to a face-off in their old school costumes. She’d wear her classic metal bikini, if he could squeeze into to his vintage duds.

Of course, Shatner soon had a YouTube response ready.

“You know, talk about special effects,” he began, addressing one of "Star Wars" alleged advantages. “It’s true, ‘Star Wars’ did have the best special effects. In fact, everything about 'Star Wars' was special effects. I envy the special effects. The only thing is you guys forgot about story and character and plot development — those kind of basic things.”

Ouch! And it didn’t help matters that Shatner made most of that statement while a photo of the much-maligned “Wars” character Jar Jar Binks played across the screen.

But the actor wasn’t simply satisfied going after the films. He had something to say about Fisher slipping into her old Princess Leia garb, too.

“As for you in a bikini and me in my original costume, I don’t know if we’re ready for you in a bikini,” he joked.  “My costume was made of a stretch material, so there wouldn't be any difficulty in giving it a push here and there ... 'But you in a bikini? Now? (That) needs a little more than push and pull. It needs a lot of uplift.”

A double-handed gesture went along with that last line, but you’ll have to watch the clip to get the full effect.

“See ya, Carrie,” Shatner then said with a salute.

What do you think, “Star” fans? Is the franchise battle coming to an end now, or will Fisher return fire? Tell us what you think in the comments section below.

Hahahahaha - Burn!!!!!!

WTG, Captain Kirk! He's right. Princess was pretty hot thirty years ago, but the last thing I'd want to see is Carrie Fisher in a bikini today. Ugh!

Maybe Fisher should wear the stretch material costume and Shatner should wear the metal bikini. Then kiss and make up.

Travis,

That would never work. Star Trek takes place in the 23-24th century and is limited mostly to the Alpha Quadrant of our galaxy. Star Wars takes places a long time ago in a galaxy far far away.

If your Star-Wareck hybrid ever actually took place it would have nerds like me up in arms with phasers set to KILL and Light-sabres swinging over the story line inconsistencies.

Yes but Star Trek ships are always bouncing around in time and even generating alternate universes with all the knots they keep tying in the space-time continuum, so a remix of Star Trek and Star Wars together could easily fit into one of those time warps. It would be hidden and never talked about of course, sort of like Clark Gable and Loretta Young's secret love child...

Captain Kirk + Princess Leia = a pissed off Han Solo when Solo learns Anikan is really Kirk's kid. A story would be consistent. You forget that the Federation knows how to time travel and there are beings that could zap them to the Star Wars galaxy. Heck, who knows how the Organians did what they did, perhaps they used the force.

I don’t think there’s really too much of a comparison possible. George Lucas said it best when he stated: Star Trek was science fiction where as I wrote Star Wars as a space opera. He liked Star Trek.

I'm sure that Carrie will return fire.

IMHO ... It really depends on your age as to which is better; Star Trek (original series) was written for adults with its not so subtle commentary on the contemporary social and political issues. Star Wars always appeared to me to be written for children, a space age fairy tale with a familiar plot (once upon a time in a galaxy far, far away...). FX were far better in Star Wars, but it was produced almost two decades later with the advantages of better technology and a bigger budget. I prefer Star Trek.

The ironic thing is, I believe Star Trek: TNG and possibly other Star Trek series had their effects done by Industrial Light & Magic, which is the special effects department of Lucasfilm.

Star Wars? Totally childish. How anyone can dare to compare it against Trek is beyond me. And, for the record, Shatner is infinitely cooler and more successful than Fisher ever was.

And, god forbid I have to look at her in a bikini...

Um, the original Star Wars was released in 1977, not decades after the original Star Trek Series which ended in 1969. Both are outstanding for the genre. I'm just enjoying this and hope it goes on for a while. Your serve, Ms. Fisher.

I generally agree. However, Star Wars has elements of the holy grail stories which are rather sophisticated. And Star Trek had very adult themes, but after it's second year, some Star Trek episodes became rather childish.

What would be fun is to see the Star Trek conventions held together with a new Star Wars convention.

Two children playing king (or queen) of the hill. What a joke. They must be doing it for the publicity. But I really would think Ms. Fisher would have been smarter than to try to argue with an idiot who doesn't know how to close his mouth.

Which would win? The Jedi or the Sith has hightened reflexes, telekinesis, telepathy, forsight, Force lightning... Starfleet officers have ablities, besides what's part of their natural racial traits, the ablility to use alien technology of a species they barely know and tell time without so much as looking at a clock. No, both series has their own merits that most sci-fi geeks like and they should not even make it a comic. It might have worked for Alien vs. Predator or even Jason vs. Freddy, but no one can be that geeky.

Personally I like both equally and would love to hang a Death Star disco ball next to my Star Trek models and my collection of Transformers. It's not like I'm getting any use of that 70's era lamp hook stuck in my ceiling.

Mr. Shatner...I grew up watching star Trek w/ my Dad...it was a wonderful bonding experience for us. And You ROCKED as Capt James Tiberius Kirk...my hero for many many yrs. Then along came star wars...and I loved it too but it was a totally different story. And, as far as Im concerned...Star Trek is the original....the BEST...Star Wars went a different route...trek if you will...;).

I love both shows...and watch Star Trek whenever I can...but this bickering over which is better is pointless. Everyone is going to have their faves...as for me.... I'm a Trekkie...and dam proud of it. You wont convince others to change their minds, the ones that grew up watching star wars. But that's the wonderful thing about being an American....we all have the right and privilege to like what we like when we like it.

This bickering is beneath you, Mr. Shatner. Let the haters hate...in your heart...and mine...we know which is the better show....Trek all the way baby.

Much Love to you and your this Holiday Season. Stay Safe

Star Wars launched the career of one of the best film actors of all time (Harrison Ford) and started world renown effects (ILM) and sound (THX and Skywalker Sound) companies. What did the original Star Trek do other than suck, get canceled, and develop a cult following?

And to talk of plot development? Star Wars is the classic battle of good vs evil, inner turmoil, facing adversity in terrible odds. Star trek taught us (each week) to woo green, blue and other oddly colored women, be 'logical' and to "giver all shes got" with no defined endgame, no real plot than "this time on star trek."

Character development? star trek has none, while the characters in 'A New Hope' are drasticly different than 'Return of the Jedi'

      Try again Shat.

Sorry, but Harrison Ford was in American Graffity before becoming Han Solo. That is the reason why Lucas hire him, despite his reluctance to use the same actors more than once in his movies.

I thought the Star Wars movies were idiotic and cartoonish. The first movie was so bad I couldn't sit through half the film; I never bothered with the "prequels." Star Trek, on the other hand, was well-made science fiction with top-notch stories, characters and performances. I loved that show. I even loved the feature-length films. Shatner was damn hot. Frankly, he still is. (Keep in mind ... I'm in my 60s.)

one is a romantic space-opera, one is sci-fi-philosophy.

Star Wars doesn't satisfy beyond its special effects. It's supposed to be some sort of heavy saga about good vs. evil.

The shallow special effects, shallow characters, shallow plot belies such heavy musings. OK, there's good, there's evil, I get it. Thanks George Lucas for making a series and using children's building blocks to imply it with no letters on the blocks. Oh....Snap!

I can't help but wonder if this supposed bickering is really legitimate, or if both Fisher and Shatner are, in a subtle way, poking fun at the legions of fans who, rather than just preferring one over the other or enjoying both for what they are, insist on some ludicrous "holy war" to say whether Star Trek is better than Star Wars, or vice-versa.

They both have Star in the name. They both are science fiction. They both are interesting. But they are rather different beasts from each other.

well...the decades roll on, things change, things remain the same...to each his own...I grew up on Star Trek...my Dad was a real "rocket scientist". We had a lot of discussions on the "reality" of some of the scientific principles/theories in Star Trek (Sci-Fi was always a great love of ours). Star Wars gave birth to the special effects genre, and that fascinated him. However, I think if he had lived long enough Battlestar Galatica would have blown him away. To me B.G. took the best of both and put them together. ( not trying to change the subject...just saying)

I believe I will remain dubious as to whether or not Shatner could get into his original Star Trek costume, the ones in the series, not the movies; he certainly had gained a significant amount of weight between the end of the series and the beginning of the movies. Would rather not see Carrie Fisher in her Star Wars bikini.

Truly, they need to grow up and act their age, not their shoe size.

To each his own. I counted on Star Trek and Star Wars to take me away from reality for just a little while. Each show has its fans.

I thought the original Star Trek was lame, and William Shatner a poor actor. STTNG was much better, Picard was a much better captain. Star Wars I did not care so much for, I have not seen their last several movies. Harrison Ford is a great actor IMO, Carrie Fisher not so much. This "battle" is amusing though, Shatner is better at comedy than actual acting, and this fits right in.

Star Trek all the way! Hands down. How many TV series could have been made based on Star Wars? Oh Star Wars was fun to watch, but it was just the Empire and Vader they had to deal with. It's just hard to imagine that two people, Vader and the Sith Lord, his boss, could rule an entire galaxy for hundreds of years.

Star Trek definitely had depth and plots. That's what made it something to watch every week. That's what makes people want to see more and more movies.

Well he does have a point. The first three movies, Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi were ruined by adding special effects decades later.

And the newer three movies were nothing but special effects.
