The long-awaited trailer for "The Dark Knight Rises" is out, and it reveals that football is a more dangerous game than we ever thought.
In the trailer's best scene, villain Bane (Tom Hardy) booby-traps a football stadium (reportedly Heinz Field in Pittsburgh), and as a receiver races to the end zone to score, the entire gridiron slowly blows up behind him, with the defenders chasing him just falling into nothingness. Apparently the end zone itself is sacred ground, because the player scores safely, turns around, and sees just a gigantic hole where the field once was. Talk about running for daylight.
It also turns out that gazillionaire Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) is among the one percent (as if prefacing his name with "gazillionaire" didn't clue us in).
In a dance scene, Selina "Catwoman" Kyle (Anne Hathaway), teases Wayne with these words: "You think this can last. There's a storm coming, Mr. Wayne, and when it hits, you all are going to wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us." Sound a little Occupy Wall Street to anyone else?
Other scenes feature Bane rasping in an utterly creepy but very difficult to understand voice, loyal Alfred expressing his love for Bruce, some hints at trouble for Commissioner Gordon (Gary Oldman) and an overwhelming sense that this film is going to break some major movie attendance records come summer.
Bane is one terrifying villain. Heath Ledger's Joker's insane mind games were hard to surpass, but here we have a villain (known as "The Man Who Broke the Bat" for his spinal-cord smashing antics) who is sheer physical power with his own blend of complete insanity. For those who thought Batman movie villains would head downhill after Ledger's death, think again. Seven months to go.
Tell us what you think in the comments.

doesn't anyone have anything to say about the batman?
Um...what the heck is that Batmobile-shaped spacecraft flying behind Batman's apparently new camoflauged Battank? Also, did anyone else notice that Batman was shooting into a crowd with the Battank's cannon (unless that was someone else driving the battank)?
They should have filmed in Minneapolis. That way instead of Batman beating criminals up he could just scowl at them disapprovingly.
If you pause the clip at the point you see the flying bat mobile-esque vehicle, you can see that there is another desert camouflaged tumbler behind the truck. Combined with the 3rd "tank" tumbler with the huge cannon and the fact that it was firing at or near civilians, and the fact that the black flying vehicle (Batman) looked to be chasing the truck, I would have to make an assumption that banes goons or another entity (League of Assassins?) acquired a supply of tumblers. That or the government has gotten some considerable donations from Wayne Enterprises, which in my mind would raise some flags as to how batman procured one of these things long before SWAT or whatever government entity it might be. But eh its a movie... its allowed a few holes. Just my 2¢.
They should really edit the title to be 'Dark Knight Rises', or some other people might wonder why they're talking about the other movie.
Either way, I'm gonna hit up the midnight release to this one.
Saw the first one and thought that is an interesting take if only they hadn't chosen Bale.
Saw the second one and the massively intracate plans that the Joker had put in effect felt awkward to me. Had one thing not gone right the entire plan would have collapsed. While Ledger played a great part that part wasn't very true to the classic character for me and made the film decidedly meh...
So I think they can keep this new movie and I will only partake in Batman written by Paul Dini before anymore of my childhood characters are destroyed.
Oh, and it is only Pittsburgh's field....Who cares? Go Lions!!!!! <ducks a shoe> muahahahah
Reportedly Heinz Field in Pittsburgh? Definitely... I saw them film it! lol And keJ009... Lions? Really? lol
They need to digitally remaster Bane's voice so that moviegoers can understand what he's saying. I'd hate to wait for the DVD/blueray release just so that I can get subtitles for Bane's dialogue.
Also for those that don't know... that actually is Hines Ward and the first football player you see in the trailer is Pittsburgh mayor Luke Ravenstahl. Go Steelers!
Hey....Lions since 1986....can't help it.
I must have suck running through my viens....
Better they didnt' blow up Detroits field. That would mean they would have had to shoot in Detroit. Wouldn't want any actors getting shot :P
Lol good point! The shooting here caused some serious traffic problems during rush hour!!!
I noticed that the player who caught the ball was Ward. Given that they didn't have the NFL's blessing to use any images and team names, the team color clearly indicates that it's supposed to be the Steelers. As for the other team, the team colors are very much like the Seahakws (white road jerseys, blue and green on the unis). Was this supposed to be a reenactment of the game earlier this season back on 9/18? Strange coincidence!
probably tried to remake the game, with a twist (the field being destroyed up to the endzone)
My biggest hope is that they portray Bane correctly. He isn't blind brute force. He is hyper intelligent and the only villan to ever match/beat Wayne with his wits.
Should they portray him correctly then I might watch the show. It all hinges on the characters for me.
I agree that Bale's voice is hard to understand and think that the digital remastering is a great idea!
These movies are incredible. The purpose of movies in this vein of entertainment is that we can all suspend reality for an hour and a half and enjoy the show. While there may be some far-fetched and somewhat over-the-top sequences and/or planned-out strategies, that's part of what makes it entertaining. I can pretty much guarantee that an action movie of this magnitude that only flowed as well as it might in "real life" would probably end up pretty boring and non-climatic - and definitely not too entertaining.
If nothing else, I will see this movies to enjoy the incredible music by Hans Zimmer - that alone may make it worth the price of admission!
This series has been nothing less than spectacular. If you compare them to the campy Batman and Robin TV show that I grew up with, or the just fairly "ok" attempts at entrainment that was the Tim Burton /Joel Schumacher series of movies, these so far out-class and out-shine them as to hardly be considered in the same genre.
I will go, and I'm confident that I will enjoy the movie immensely, as will a predictably large portion of movie going patrons when this movie is released.
That is where you and I differ Ddub. You want an action show and I want vivid characterizations supplemented with action :).
What always drew me to Batman since I was a tot and watching the campy Adam West version was the characters and the story/drama. Action always took a back seat. I hate to see the characters/story destroyed, or rewritten, for the sake of 'splosions and an awesome action sequence. They each have their place but not at the expense of the characters. :)
keJ009 - can't argue with you there. I just watched "The Help" last night with my wife and was AMAZED at the level of character development. The movie was very well done, and I fully identified with the characters - I felt their pain, frustration and feelings of hopelessness regarding their situation. And - as the story developed, I fully felt their level of resolve and determination.
But, yeah - I'll admit that I'm in it more for the show than the character development when it come to Batman. I can understand your frustration with that being an afterthought in these movies. For your sake, I hope they do a good job at CD for this one.
I hope they do as well :)
Probably the pinnacle of my Batman experiences was the animated series, which was written by the same guy who wrote the 2 Batman games for Rocksteady (Paul Dini) and I think he spoiled me hehe.
I got too much of a good thing and it spoiled my dinner :)
I watched the trailer a few times last night and it appears there is a tie in with Batman Arkham City. Azrael, The Watcher in the Wings, has a very similar speech to what Selina has to say while dancing with Bruce Wayne. It's just missing the 1% reference. Basically that Gotham will burn and Batman is the chosen one but Bane is also in the game at that point, caged rather weakly, so I would have suspected a different character.
I wonder what other surprises they will have in this movie. The Joker was the focus in the second movie with a very brief cameo by The Scarecrow and a quick Two Face rise and fall. This after the first movie dealt with Ra's Al Ghul and The Scarecrow. Who else might they plan to have along with Bane? This is the final movie for this group and I imagine they want to go out with a bang.
Tune in July 20th, Same Bat Time, Same Bat Theater. It's still campy even when trying to reword it a little.
They are actually having Talia Al Ghul in this movie. You can find pictures of her standing on top of the new cammo batmobile. She's also in IDBM's roster for this one, as is a young Ra's Al Ghul, which suggests a flashback sequence in which a younger Ra's Al Ghul is remembered by his daughter.
Didn't the football field explode and disappear in another recent movie or TV show, with the quarterback scoring and then turning around?
There are just so many villains they could have and should have picked over Bane. No evidence of the Venom use which gave him the physical edge to beat Batman. No evidence or his genius level intellect. Without these, it just simply ISN'T BANE! Would have been better to save Two-Face for this movie.
