'Hobbit' trailer tantalizes fans

Warner Bros.

Showing Tolkien fans "The Hobbit" trailer is like dangling a choice Christmas present in front of their eyes for two minutes and thirty seconds and then snatching it away for another year.

We're going back to Middle Earth, and it's gorgeous once again. Fans are already raving about the trailer's sneak peek back into the magical world, even though the movie won't hit theaters until Dec. 14, 2012.

It may be blasphemy, but as a reader, I preferred "The Hobbit" to "Lord of the Rings." Maybe it was because I read it as a kid and it seems to be the simpler, lighter, more kid-friendly read. But that's not meant to dismiss it -- it's every bit as compelling a tale and as fascinating a world, and the movie looks to satisfy and delight fans just like the "LOTR" trilogy did.

What do you think of the trailer? Tell us in the comments.

I loved the books that made up The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and The Silmarillion. I loved Peter Jackson's vision of The Lord of the Rings on the big screen and I am eagerly awaiting his vision of The Hobbit.

WooHoo! Finally, another Xmas to look forward to! (Note: when the three trilogy films came out in successive Decembers, I spent those Xmas days at the movies. I've missed them!)

I loved both of the Tolkien books, have read them numerous times, and thought that the movie industry did a surprisingly good job on the LOTR trilogy; but having read The Hobbit, it should be done as a single film, and not the 2-part serialized version currently in production. It should probably also have been made before the LOTR trilogy. I think that many people will be a little disappointed with it. The story isn't quite as strong as the trilogy, in my opinion.

Its being made into two movies so they dont cut out anything important. Unfortunately you cant make an 8 hour movie to be released into theaters. And as for this being made after LOTR, The Hobbit was actually witten after the LOTR trillogy, so I find it fitting.

I didn't know that. Are you sure THE HOBBIT was written after the Trilogy? I guess I should go home and check my copies for the date of publication, huh?

Of the two, I prefer the trilogy because it's more mature. The HOBBIT is fun, but it's really more like a fairy tale in style.

I"ve read them both multiple times but I still get confused..THE HOBBIT is the one with Tom Bombadil, right? Or Tim Benzedrine from "BORED OF THE RINGS". Ahhh BORED OF THE RINGS. The Ballhog, Good Gulf Grey Teeth and all the rest. NOW THAT would make a great movie.

        Just kidding.

ok, bad info on my part, Hobbit is indeed the first. It was, however, re-edited to fit better with the trillogy after they were relesed.

I like how they are going to do two movies to completely flesh out the story. The only problem I see is that the best parts of the book are during the second half namely, smaug the dragon and the battle of five armies. So depending on how far into the book the first movie goes, we may have to wait 2 years for another super epic tolkien/jackson movie. That being said I'm sure the first movie will still be awesome.

Now that's what I call a sneak peak! The Hobbit was one of the first tales I knew. Sounds like a great movie with some hot chocolate and a quiet theater.

Why, that's the most ridiculous thing I ever saw, especially since I have to wait a year before I can jump back into Middle Earth! Hope they don't mind if I bring a couple of cigars instead of pipe weed. (First read the Hobbit in 1965 and read the tetrology every other year or so)!

I am a huge fan of The Hobbit, and I really hope that Peter Jackson does this one right ... The Hobbit is on a much more intimate and whimsical scale than the other books, and character development and humor were definitely not his strong suits in the Lord of the Rings movies. Holding my judgment until I see a little more than what's here.

We performed The Hobbit as our high school Thespian's chapter annual children's play in 1969 . ( I built a huge paper maché Smaug the dragon ).

I hope Jackson & Co. do a better job of their production . We set the bar quite high , for Wyoming...

The script will be the determinant.

Yes, I'm sure the special effects of your production in 1965 Wyoming will be difficult to top. But I'm impressed you even tackled the project. Very impressed.

Can't wait! Hobbit & Lord of the Rings are the finest books ever written. All three Lord of the Rings movies being the finest movies ever made! Thanks again Mr Jackson!

I read the Hobbit in high school in 1970 and it is still one of my favorite fantasy books. Tolkien had the ability to paint such a beautifully detailed and descriptively enthralling landscape that hooked me from the start. I consider Peter Jackson's adaption of the Lord of the Rings to be the best adaption of book to film the best ever. Nothing compares to your imagination when reading a book and it is very rare that the film will capture the images created in your mind from reading the printed page. I was amazed how close Jackson came to producing those images I imagined in my mind.

I can't wait for the film!

Leaving myself wide open here, but what is the deal with everyone's nose being about 3 times normal size in the Tolkien movies?
