Soundgarden vs. Kanye at music festival?

Kanye West performed at the Big Day Out Festival at the Gold Coast Parklands on Jan. 22 in Australia.

Updated at 5:50 p.m. PT

Oh boy. Seems Kanye West does more than just blog in all caps -- he apparently soundchecks extra loud, too, and that did not go over well this past weekend.

The hip-hop star was in Australia to headline a set at the Big Day Out festival Sunday, but bad weather reportedly delayed his set. When Kanye finally took the stage 45 minutes late for his soundcheck, according to news.co.au, it was so loud that it disrupted the performances on neighboring stages -- including that of Soundgarden.

With Kanye's tunes spilling onto the band's mainstage performance, Soundgarden fans started booing, according to news.co.au. Frontman Chris Cornell was irked as well and didn't hide his frustration.

"Sounds like there’s children playing music there, retarded children, retarded as in held back," the singer said to fans. "There’s no other word for it."

Yikes. Perhaps not the best choice of words, regardless of the level of frustration.

But Cornell backed off a bit on Monday afternoon. In a message posted to Twitter, the rocker clarified, "My comments @ BDO were directed solely at inadequate tour production. Kanye had nothing to do with it! We love him."

But could the situation have been avoided?

According to Australia's Courier Mail, it wasn't really the rain that delayed Kanye's set. It was because the hip-hop star didn't want to share the spotlight with Tony Hawk, a source said. The skateboarding great was supposed to show off his moves at 6:30 p.m., but according to the Courier Mail, his performance was delayed for about two hours by a real downpour that made skating conditions dangerous. Kanye was originally scheduled to begin at 8:30 p.m.

Whatever the reason for the tardy set, Kanye's delay was "unheard of in BDO history," according to Coast Confidential.

Sound Garden is one of the best Alternative Rock bands from the 80s and 90s and is totally worth having in your library. Be sure to also check out Temple of the Dog.

He pulled a similar stunt at Bonnaroo several years ago. All promoters should know by now he's not a good fit for festivals or any other event that may not be about him 100% of the time. His fragile ego can't handle it. Grammys... please take note!

Gee Kanye, why were you so worried about sharing the spotlight with Tony Hawk? Guess you were afraid he'd steal it from you (and with good reason), so now you want to steal Soundgarden's? Isn't the booing enough proof that people don't care about you?

He is a tool, douche, ahole and more but he is extremely talented. Anyone who says otherwise really is a hater (I hate that word but it fits). If you check his bio, you'd see that he is one of the most respected producers of this generation. You may not like him as a person but he is enormously talented. He's responsible for some of the best albums ever (as a producer not as a rapper). And he's awesome in concert. He's the only artist I've seen live twice who stays well after the concert supposed to end and performs every hit he has. But yes, he's has a terrible personality.

Kanye West is a selfish, self-centered piece of cr@p in a genre that is slowly fading because it all sounds so similar. Hip-hop became popular in part because it was so different and urban, but just like all the Harley riders out there who all look and act alike, hip-hop is falling into the same trap. I personally can't wait until all the rich a$$e$ like Kanye who think who the hell they are become as common as the dirt under our feet.

He is certainly not somebody that should have that kind of ego. Inflated ego's are bad enough, add lack of talent and no worth to society as a whole, and it becomes unbearable.

    #6.4 - Tue Jan 24, 2012 12:00 AM EST

Oh yeah he's the guy South Park made fun of with the Fish Sticks joke. There's no skill involved with stealing songs and putting your own auto-tuned lyrics to it. Race not needed to classify a talentless moron. The videos are the funniest %$%$ in the world to watch muted. It always looks like some kind of "I Can't Believe It's Not Butter" commercial with rain added and no Fabio. When did this become accepted as music??? One day music will be good again.

Such a retarded comment, Cavesitter. Retarded as in held back! He doesn't steal music, if he samples something, he credits the writers. I don't hear very much auto-tuning on his albums, he doesn't need to since he's a talented rapper. He's just arrogant and clueless at times, but that's just Kanye being Kanye! And if you don't think music is good now, turn off your radio and discover some real music on Pitchfork, Emusic, or even iTunes.

Last time I checked Kanye's a multi-grammy winner (Google him). Who the hell even knows who Soundgarden is anymore except people who shouldn't be reading articles about Kanye West v. Soundgarden! (i. e. adults)

You really date yourself @Jonathan if you know Tony Hawk (almost 50), Soungarden (almost 50) but don't know Kanye?

Oh I get it. We're all still upset about the Taylor Swift incident and the fact that you guys couldn't lynch him on the spot like it was 1923 Birmingham, Alabama. Get over it!

        You're reaching, James.

Black, white, or purple Kanye acts like a ninth grader on a regular and needs VERY VERY BADLY to check himself or be checked by someone close to him.

Please don't enable him with compliments he has already given himself today.

They're both amazing artists. And Chris was right to retract his statement. He knows it and thats why he did it and did it so quickly. AND Kanye was a douche for not showing up when he should have and playing his music too loud when he did. His music and talent is still brilliant though. I can think of lots of artists whose work and talents are brilliant but they themselves are either douchebags or horrible persons.

@Amber - what I know is that some of the best hip-hop, and what little I can tolerate for any length of time as well, came from a white guy - Marshall Mathers, aka Eminem - and you're only right about the music from African-Americans BEFORE hip-hop, namely soul and Motown stuff. THAT is great, creative and talented music - REAL MUSIC, that which has both melody and harmony, created with instruments and reproduced on stage without the modification of electronics and the "I can't do it live" (see Avril Lavigne) lip-sync. And by the way, anyone with an IQ of above room temperature is smart enough to have their own opinion about the music they like and has the ability to change the channel as well, so clearly you're speaking of others like yourself.
