James McEachin and James Garner in "The Rockford Files."
"The Rockford Files" is a 1970s TV classic. James Garner starred as ex-con turned private eye Jim Rockford, who lived in a beachfront trailer, drove a gold Firebird, and interacted with dad Rocky and pals such as former cellmate Angel Martin as he pursued his cases.
But can that 1970s legend be relaunched for a new generation? According to an unconfirmed report on Deadline.com, Universal Pictures is going to try, with a big-screen version of the series featuring Vince Vaughn in the Garner role.
Some of those sharing comments on the Deadline story are not thrilled about the casting report.
"Vaughn is far too imposing physically," wrote reader Sheldon W. "Owen Wilson would be far more appropriate for the role."
Others can't imagine anyone ever replacing the charismatic star. "Not sure how I feel about this," wrote a reader going by Ruddy. "I love Garner too much to see this happen. I’m on the fence ... but leaning to the side of 'WTF' and 'Hell no.'"
