Lady Gaga cancels Indonesia concert amid Muslim protest fears

Dita Alangkara / AP

Muslim men shout slogans during a rally against U.S. pop singer Lady Gaga outside the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta, Indonesia, Friday.

Lady Gaga has canceled a sell-out concert in Indonesia amid security fears following threats from Muslim hardliners over her provocative outfits, it is reported.

Questions were raised about the ‘Born This Way Ball’ in Jakarta after the extremist Islamic Defenders Front predicted violence if it went ahead, calling the singer a “devil’s messenger” who wears only a “bra and panties” on stage, according to an Agence France-Presse report published by Al-Arabiya.

Concert promotion lawyer Minola Sebayang confirmed Sunday that the June 3 show had been canceled, The Associated Press reported.

Lady Gaga refused permit for Indonesia show following religious protests

He said: "With threats if the concert goes ahead, Lady Gaga's side is calling off the concert. This is not only about Lady Gaga's security, but extends to those who will be watching her."

Indonesia is a secular nation, but with a population of 240 million has more Muslims than any other country in the world.

American pop singer and songwriter Lady Gaga waves to the crowd upon her arrival in Manila, Philippines, earlier this month.

The Jakarta show would have been the biggest performance on Lady Gaga's Asian tour, and more than 50,000 tickets had been sold, the BBC reported.

Promoters said they would offer refunds.

According to music news site NME.com, the singer’s tour kicked off in controversy in April after authorities in Seoul, South Korea implemented a strict adults only policy at her show, banning anyone under the age of 18 from attending her first tour date.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

I saw Gaga in Cleveland. If not for pasties this could of been a peep show. Not only Gaga but many of the stage singers and warm up band were nearly naked on stage. One man strips to a G string that wasn't visible from my seating he just looked nude.

The show was OK and music was great. I think the music would of been just as great if they had clothes on. Just because America is swirling in the toilet bowl of immorality doesn't mean the rest of the world is and Gaga should know and respect that.

She and many of her *little monsters* demand tolerance but have none of their own.

No I took my Marine nephew and his date to Cleveland for a weekend of fun and the concert was their request. I love all music and to me the human body is beautiful. Seeing a nude body however has it's place and I believe Gaga doesn't need to be naked to sing like she does.

Cher wore outfits like this for years and nothing was ever said. It's a show. The play and movie "Old Calcutta" was done in the nude. Stage shows in Paris have been topless forever. Get over yourself with your archaic views. You could have walked out.

@3rd Party:

I guess you never went to a concert by Madonna. Those were the times when people were no so "righteous".

The only immoral thing is to show your body naked in the beach if you are more than 300 pounds. Many people do. They use thongs and bikinis, and they are eye sores. Sorry to be callous, but this thread is about showing your body.

Lady Gaga is beautiful. What is wrong with showing a beautiful body, that fast food companies are putting on the extinction list?

That's the mentality of most right-wingers I meet. If they're not like me or not somthing *I* approve of then it's bad or evil. It's the righties that are divisive. San Fransisco, New York or Boston are not American in their mind and not part of their view of America.

"my *world*" says it all. News flash, not everything is about *you*.

You can call her names, you can dislike her stage show, you can even not like her music, but when you say she has no talent you show your ignorance/bias against her views. She is very talented and I believe she is pretty good looking to boot! That's just my opinion on her looks, the talent spans all genres, she has proven the talent with her fan base.

Lady Gaga is a mediocre singer at best. None of her songs I find memorable at all. I have nothing against her. that being said, I think she's a marketing genius. Her costumes are always outlandish, and her fans and critics are always watching to see what she dons next. It's no wonder her concerts sell out.

Does anyone think she be even half as popular as she is if she were to just dress plain Jane all the time?

#2.20 - Sun May 27, 2012 10:52 AM EDT

I like some of her songs, would not pay to see her, though. However, since I saw her on 60 Minutes I have some respect for her. She's smart...and knows how to market herself.

From what I have read about her standing up and speaking out for some peple, I think she cancelled the show so no one there would get hurt.

It's that simple.

It's confusing to see a group of people who get so irate over things like sexuality and dress, threaten to kill others because of it, yet claim to be so holier than thou.

I see some of the viners from yesterday's discussion about Kansas and the law concerning the legality of Sharia Law in American courts.

This is what Europe is dealing with on a daily basis. Muslim groups forcing their will on the government. Zero tolerance for anything that isnt compatible with Sharia Law.

All of the liberals that so vehemently attacked Kansas probably love Lady Gaga. How would you like your government to tell you who or what will be on stage?

No more raves. No more strip clubs. No more cute girls wearing bikini's on the beach.

America needs to wake up. Islam is not the religion of peace.

What a myth. America is losing it's morality because Lady Gaga performs half naked.

You guys are a load of Shiite. If you are so offended, don't go to her concert! It's as simple as that. Don't try to control the people who aren't offended and want to see her.

The problem is with the sick minded religious zealots who want to control the common culture. Lady Gaga is hurting nobody nor making victims of anybody. A musical dance fest is far healthier than a suicide bomber. I don't go to religious prayer sessions and try to stop them because they promote lies and delusion. Don't try to control everyone else becasue your religious nut is overstimulated.

Why is everyone knocking Gaga? This story's about that religion of acceptance and peace. You know, the one eveybody's turning a blind eye to and allowing to do the same thing in this country.

I say Gaga can take off what she wants' If it pisses off the muslims, even better. If anyone's ever been to a muslim country you'd see they actually prefer the company of young boys over women...probably why they dislike Gaga so much.

    #2.26 - Sun May 27, 2012 3:03 PM EDT

The dancing around on stage half naked is just to increase her marketing fan base it has nothing to do with whether shes a good singer or not. Unfortunately this tactic doesn't work in some countries so get over it. I find my self watching some female singers music videos not because I like their song but because she is nearly naked and performing erotic moves. Its almost like porn for young kids with no rating. If that's not capitalizing on young men's desires then what is.

maybe, maybe not. It's more likely to be the result of religious dogma and intolerance. I find her music shallow and annoying and her appearance unattractive at best. I would pay money to avoid being exposed to her. She is as untalented as Kiss or Britney Spears- all shock/show, almost no music. I can understand people who think they know God's will and are willing to stand up for it drawing a line in the sand. I think they're grossly wrong, but I understand it. She, on the other hand, MUST be aware that, like Madonna, she is selling sex and shock, not good music. She should expect that some religious fanatics would be aggresive towards her. I mean, for Pete's sake, there are churches in the US that have insulted American soldiers that have died in the service of their country because the church thought that homosexuality was more important than honoring the fallen heroes and their family. Is it really a surprise that some fanatics take issue with this? And I assure you, I don't suffer from sexual repression, just good taste. And she doesn't have any. This may not be right but it is certainly understandable.

We're most likely thinking of the same one. Woodmont or something. Totally disgusting. While I don't generally support war, it is unconscionable to bring more anguish on a family grieving the loss of a father, son, husband, or wife. And yet these fanatics still do. It's in all cultures. You may remember that the KKK waved the Bible while hiding their faces and murdering black men for no real reason. The Muslim world doesn't have a monopoly on fanaticism. And even though it's just the one church, at least that I know of, it is indicative of a spiritual illness by people who claim to be spiritual. A bit ironic actually.

If she does good works, then I applaud that but it doesn't make her music any better than what it is. There are many musicians who both have talent and do charitable works without a conflict in their music and deportment like Sting or Bono. I don't care for her music. It think it's shallow.

They said it about him, Madonna, Tom Jones, etc. If you don't like her don't buy her products. the only thing Lady Gaga is wrong about is dressing as she does in Muslim countries--she should respect their beliefs when performing there. Yes the human body is beautiful but their religion says it should be covered and for the eyes of their husbands only (I'm not even sure if complete nudity is allowed between husband and wife).

However, those pictured at the beginning of this article (the sign-carrying Muslims) are also wrong in condemning her to "go to hell" -- I don't even think the Muslim faith believes in hell (I may be wrong) but according to what I have heard and has been published Allah is supposedly all-forgiving and all-loving.

@sockurmouth said "when was the last time religion has pushed their "religious standard" on other people? i mean these self rightoeuss lunes arnt found in the USA, I MEAN AMERICA! right?! /troll" Admittedly, I'm not sure his comment was his own thinking or if he was mocking someone else, so this comment is for whoever originated the part I show in qutes. Apparently you haven't been reading or keeping up with some of the news lately. There was a primary election in NC earlier this month in which "Amendment One" was on the ballot. It was passed and in case you don't know what it is, it is an amendment to the NC state constitution stating that the only union recognized as legal in NC is marriage between one man and one woman. That means that no recognition of any union is legally allowed for any reason - benefits, insurance, rights of survivorship if a partner dies, permission granted in the case of a medical situation like an accident of emergence (ie - permission to operate in a life threatening situation could be delayed, to the partner unless the union was 1 man and 1 woman that are married. This amendment was introduced/sponsored by the Republicans and backed and promoted by right wing. extereme conservatives based on "the Bible says" and was mostly designed to disallow gays from marrying but the umbrella also precludes the rights of one man and one woman who are cohabiting without being "legally" married. It passed mainly because the conservative religious zealots preyed on the rural constituents who are church goers and largely under educated by pushing the religious aspect as well as the bias against gays. The amendment passed throughout the state of NC, which is mostly rural with the exception of the Raleigh and Charlotte areas, which are urban. NC is only one of many who have now passed this type of legislation. This is blatantly "pushing their religious standard" on others.

Look at the pathetic taliban in Afhganistan, they did same, no music, no singing, no tv, no drawings, no artistic talent allowed. Given a chance to each individual to choose they will bolt away. Allowing each individual to see for them self does not exist, keeping them all under the darkness in a deep well and under control is better for the socalled person who said god convey his message to him. Figure God will do the work Himself if He dislike Lady Gaga performance don't need some earthlink to do His dirtywork.

In response to "Good!'s" comment.......What is normal?????? You must be another one of those religious right people. You think you have a right to judge, and people should bow to your beliefs. Well I have news for you.....you are no better than the suicide bombers who kill everyone just because they don't believe what you do. You are the people without morals, shoving your beliefs down people throats......I personally do not care for Lady Gaga...but I do believe in the freedom of the arts. If you don't like her DONT WATCH(too bad you don't buy into that statement)......people are sick and tired of the religious right telling us what we can and can't do in our own personal lives, as long as we are breaking no laws, or hurting anyone....what business is it of yours??.....You are not perfect.....so you have no right telling anyone else what is right or wrong....just like the Muslims, you believe your beliefs are the only true ones....individualism is a scary thing to you....isn't it?

Well the Christan's in the Philippines protested her lack of morals, now the Muslims in Jakarta threaten her and her fans with violence and possible death, she is not what America needs as a representative, that's a fact she is hated as much as loved even in the US. she is a modern day freak show with a little shock entertainment, that's not for everyone. her shows are borderline porn, I don't expect that someone borne and raised without morals would understand how a person that has morals would view the woman. but this is America so each can make their own decision on that matter you can go to her concerts or you can avoid her. but to lash out at the way other people view her is wrong we do have free choice don't we, what I see is the smut mongers are trying to degrade the moral element in our society what are you afraid of. I can't believe that some people are attacking conservatives and the GOP for what happens in Indonesia, who left the gates to the asylum open.

So....to the people on this blog that say they don't like Lady Gaga, can't stand her music, wouldn't go to her concert........Why are you reading about her and commenting on her? You want the attention ! Lady Gaga gets attention her way. Think you are any different....Not! Yeah rt wingers are forcing their religious beliefs on the Untited States every day! No birth control, no more Planneded Parenthood, sex for only married people...That is the republican PLATFORM! That and more tax breaks for the rich...as if you are Millionaires and billionaires. Costumes to protect from the burning rays of sun in Canada? England? North America...

Costumes for religions with pointy hats , others make women cover up so other men won't covet their women...CONTROL freaks.

War on women will get worse if you vote righty tighty.

Lady Gaga is a wonderful person. Costumes a nice gimmick, yeah all the successful entertainers have a gimmick. Wigs and boob jobs for Dolly but she sings gospel music now and then, so her boobs are ok for rt wingers.........What a joke. Again...you don't like Gaga.........good bye!

misunderstood2-seriously? You think the world is going to end because people are going to be forced to do things they otherwise wouldn't if we allow gay marriage? That if gay people are allowed to get married that suddenly a switch will be flipped and EVERYONE will be forced to accept it? Wow. People have the right to believe what they want to believe and guess what, they have the right to move to a different church if their church suddenly decides it's okay to perform a marriage ceremony for two homosexual individuals. AND churches have a right to refuse to perform such ceremonies if they want-it's their religious right. You're comparing gay marriage to crossbreeding animals-guess no one ever told you that homosexuals couldn't naturally have a child. Gay marriage doesn't breed a new generation of homosexuals. It breeds a generation of people who have tolerance and acceptance for people who are slightly different than us but still believe in the things we believe it, i.e. people unlike you. If you don't like alcohol, don't drink. If you don't believe in premarital sex, don't have it. If you don't like drugs, don't do them. If you don't like gay marriage, don't marry a member of the same sex. But don't demand that people do the things or not do the things you would or wouldn't do, simply because you believe it's right or wrong. I've lost friendships this way, not even over the gay marriage issue, but because the person was so righteous in their belief that their opinion was so correct, all of the time, that they couldn't see that it was the diversity and differences among their friends that made them so compatible because there was always something new to discuss and learn about and agree to disagree over or bond over. You don't have to like every single thing your friend, parents, partner, coworkers, etc, like. That's what makes the world go round.

If the "moral minority" had their way in this country, it would be just the same. Call it Sharia law or Biblical justice, the fact remains that any time a major religion gets involved with something common sense goes out the window!

It is too bad that these narrow minded religious fanatics were able to force the cancellation of the show. the fact that they succeeded only encourages them and makes them feel that they were right in doing what they did since they won. It makes them feel that threatening or even using violence to get their way is an acceptable since it worked. I can understand why Lady Gaga and the promoter made the decision they did, but it is a shame that they let these fanatics win since it will only encourage them to do the same thing in the future. I wish that they could have stood their ground and gone ahead with the show, but I can understand that they did not want to risk the safety of the performers or concert goers in the event that these fanatics followed through on their threats of violence.

I am not saying that I necessarily approve of the outfits that Lady Gaga and other performers wear on stage. I do not see the need for a musician to appear on stage with so little on, but it should be an individual's choice whether or not they want to attend her shows or allow their children to go. It should definitely not be something that is dictated by religious fanatics.

I am not familiar with Lady GaGa, but from the posts, I gather that her preformances/appearance is one of promotion of sexuality. It's good for her purse but not for the good of our teens/adults? It seems that, as a lack of talent, this is where she is going -- and sadly -- it works. So Lady GaGa, fill your purse.

It's frightening and disturbing when an entire country's authorities bend to the will of a religious group. In time this sort of thing might die out when the human race matures. Doesn't seem likely to occur within my lifetime though.

I am going to have to read the Koran for myself and see why so many people are driven toward violence after reading this version of god's word . . . my, my, my, life's hard enough without becoming driven to kill people who see things differently that one's own views.

I had not heard of Lady Gaga but went online and watched and listened to some of her stuff. It's quite a show. She's definately got a showman's talent. For those who don't care for her or her style it's a simple thing: don't watch or listen. At this moment here in this country no one can force you to watch nor can they FORCE YOU TO NOT WATCH (as happened in Indonesia).

          Peace and love y'all.

The Muslim extremists in Indonesia aren't afraid to use violence if they think it's necessary.... much like certain liberals in America... remember the hissy fit they had when they thought they'd have to start paying for their own contraceptives, yikes! If only I could talk to all people like you face-to-face; you would stand badly corrected. Same goes for brian-869346 and many others. I have nothing against Lady Gaga; I LOVE her MUSIC. I am not though with the way her shows and over-exposed clothes go and all (it's her choice - what she decides to dress up as) but their many people like her (she isn't the only one) and all I can do about this is ignore and maybe stay away from it. OPINIONS DIFFER BETWEEN PEOPLE, BUT DON'T YOU EVER CROSS THE LINE!

I hope you read this, respect it, and understand it. THIS ISN'T A HATE MESSAGE AND THAT'S THE WAY ALL COMMENTS SHOULD GO AS: no swearing, no hating, and no stupid judgments and assumptions. (:

I wish we did have some morality police in this country... the lack thereof is half the problem with our country now. Allowing kids to watch things on TV that their little minds cannot possibly comprehend... adults giving no guidance and not policing what they watch... there is no way of knowing what all of this does to the psychological development of so many kids. Might explain why we are inundated with perverts and sickos of all kinds. Might also explain why there is so much infidelity and prostitution and child molestation, etc. It wasn't always like this in our country.... in the days before the Lady Gagas and Madonnas and the porn available in our living rooms. Our freedoms have contributed to our downfall.

If you, as a parent, do not want your child to watch a particular program, you can take the remote from him/her or you can use the parent control chip that almost all tv's have had for quite a number of years now.

"Couldn't have said it better myself. we should tear up our constitution and create a state where the government controls everything we think , do and say THAT is the only way to have a civilized society! oh wait, i know what that's called!!!!! we need to become the totalitarian states of america then and only then will we become moral, righteous, holy, civilized people because individuals are evil."

Civilization is the progress toward a society of privacy. The savage's (Muslim's) whole existence is public, ruled by the laws of his "tribe". Civilization is the process of setting man free from men.

We call this a free country. I personally prefer that it remain that way. Morality police????? You must subscribe to Orwellian tenents. You are not entitled with the right to come into my home and tell me what I can or cannot do. If you don't think the kiddies should watch something, there are many solutions - the "off" button, the electrical plug, satellite TV and probably cable have controls that can be set to disallow channels or programming from being displayed on the set. My children are grown and gone and have children of their own so I'm not worried about content, I just turn it off if I'm offended - very easy. For those who think there should be "morality police" no one has the right to tell someone else how to raise their children unless the children are being abused - end of story.

                  >descrs-1664846 "so much infidelity and prostitution and child molestation, etc" have existed for thousands of years. Check the Bible so many like to tout. Many of the patriarchs had multiple wives and concubines, prostitution was widespread and check out what some of the ancient Greeks subscribed to. What about Roman soldiers "burning, raping and pillaging"? This isn't something new brought about by TV.

Yes. Now days young kids know more about dark side of sex then alot of the adults. When I was a kid which was not that long ago we bearly had porn. You would have to steal a mag from your older brother just to see a bearly revealing centrefold. Now any kid 0-18 with an internet access can watch Anal, DP, Gangbangs, Rimjobs, throatgaging and even Gay. They are also exposed to the endless miss information and stupid ideas that come from watching youtube. While these are great sources of entertainment more care should be taken in who can view them.

I understand there is a proposal to allow liberals and libertarians to leave Kansas with just the clothes on their backs and some family mementos.

Yeah right, Gaga is a TOTAL copycat (and she copies Madonna plenty), Madonna is/was original. Every single one of Gaga's outfits was/is a copy of someone else's. Her ex-boyfriend is the one who "created" her "Gaga" image, and the name Gaga is from the song from Queen.

You bring up an interesting point: Why have there not been more songs denouncing Muslim life and extremes? I would think a tune such as that would be a monster hit. I may write one myself ...

Let's all write a tune, CD cover graphics depict Mohammed with a bomb in his head - you know? Even some good poetry would be entertaining.

Who can name 5 words that rhyme with Muslim??

Because writing an anti-Muslim song would cause a jihad against the writer and/or performer, as certain cartoonists could tell you if they were still alive.

I think that would be a mistake if she did a song about this. Maybe generalize about hatred but nothing personal against Islam. This would only minimize her stance against hatred in general and thats what she's against right? Personally, I don't think the religious fundamentalists have won necessarily. This puts a black eye against Indonesia. They can give excuses about devil worshiper and all but that just proves these people are intolerant, ignorant and immature. If they believe indonesian kids would be unruly and effect negatively on their country then that says they have no faith on their own people. If they are smart , MATURE, and really faithful to their religion nothing like Gaga's show would deter their faith. But I guess there are doubts.

Always try to make the other side live up to standards that You set but DON'T adhere to.

well all I can say about GAGAG is, who the ell would want to watch that?

its like going to a strip show to watch a bunch of freaks moving around

looking like they are at an orgy.

you parents should be ashamed of yourselves.

how many of you would take you 8 ,9 , 10 year olds to a strip joint?

well, have you looked lately at what she (GAGAG) wears ?

and I don't give a rats arse what the artists did in the past,

it didn't look right then and it shure an ell looks even worse now.

                                FFS people,

tell me, if this seems right to you, then

why don't you walk yourself down the street looking like this?

why do the singers today feel they have to show more than

they need to? well one thing comes to mind. they fecken cant sing, they need something to get your attention!!!!

You have a bit of a point... I work, contractually with the movie industry, and when a move has no plot, they fill in the gaps with explosions, special effects, and nudity.

So, with that logic, I can't sing; however, if I take off all my cloths, people might come to my concerts... Scratch that, I don't think ANYONE would come to see me sans clothes ;-)

Have you been to New York or San Fransisco lately? Is that how you judge people by their looks? How shallow. Try looking at the person and look behind the scenes at the Charities and other things she is involved in. BTW did you feel the same about Sher?

I think her statement is "Don't be afraid, let's see what happens." Her overarching message is artistic provocation.

Nothing "artistic" about it; simply provocation.
