Halloween is on its way, and Hollywood is starting to crank out the scares. The "Paranormal Activity" idea well hasn't yet run dry, so there's a fourth movie in that series, and "American Horror Story" unveils its second season, set at a creepy insane asylum. And fans of author James Patterson will want to check out "Alex Cross," with Tyler Perry playing Patterson's detective-psychologist character.
WEDNESDAY: 'American Horror Story: Asylum'
It's one of the creepiest shows out there, and it's back, just in time for Halloween. "American Horror Story" returns this week, with new characters and a spooky insane asylum setting. Show creator Ryan Murphy has said that star Jessica Lange will be the center around which the new season revolves, and the Oscar-winning actress will play a sadistic nun. Adam Levine, Chloe Sevigny, Sarah Paulson, Zachary Quinto and Joseph Fiennes will also appear this season. (Premieres Oct. 17, 10 p.m., FX.)
FRIDAY: 'Alex Cross'
Yes, that's Tyler Perry playing Cross, the detective and psychologist who's starred in more than a dozen books by James Patterson. The film is based on the 2006 book "Cross," and features an unnervingly creepy Matthew Fox as brutal serial killer The Butcher. He's gotten pretty far away from that mysterious "Lost" island. (Opens Oct. 19.)
FRIDAY: 'Paranormal Activity 4'
Things are still going bump in the night in the "Paranormal Activity" universe, and ordinary people are still using night-vision and other cameras to capture the supernatural visitors. The third film freaked viewers out by connecting a camera to a spinning fan, and the fourth film shows spooky footage from a laptop via video chat. (Opens Oct. 19.)
