Socialist socialites: Hollywood mourns Hugo Chavez

Joel Ryan / AP

Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez shakes hands with director Oliver Stone as they arrive for the screening of the film 'South of the Border' at the 66th edition of the Venice Film Festival in Venice, Italy, Sept. 7, 2009.

As thousands of Venezuelans took to the streets of Caracas to mourn President Hugo Chavez after learning of his death Tuesday, tributes began pouring in from supporters around the world — including several Hollywood heavyweights who stood by the socialist firebrand during his reign.

Actor Sean Penn, one of the Latin American leader's most vocal supporters (he once joined Chavez on the campaign trail and attended a candlelight vigil for him in Bolivia last year) said the United States had "lost a friend it never knew it had."

"And poor people around the world lost a champion," Penn said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. "I lost a friend I was blessed to have. My thoughts are with the family of President Chavez and the people of Venezuela."

Filmmaker Oliver Stone, who first met Chavez in December 2007 and credited him for many of the social changes taking place in South America, said the former leader would live forever in history.

''I mourn a great hero to the majority of his people and those who struggle throughout the world for a place," Stone said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. "Hated by the entrenched classes, Hugo Chavez will live forever in history."

"My friend, rest finally in a peace long earned," Stone added.

Actor Danny Glover, who had visited Chavez in Venezuela several times, echoed the same sentiment.

File picture dated Sept. 21, 2006 shows Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and actor/activist Danny Glover hugging each other while attending The CITGO-Venezuela Heating Oil Program inauguration ceremony at the Mt. Olivet Baptist Church in Harlem, New York.

"In sadness and in tribute to my friend, Hugo Chavez, I join with millions of Venezuelans, Latin Americans, Caribbeans, fellow U.S. citizens  and millions of freedom-loving people around the world, in hope for a rewarding future for the democratic and social development charter of the Bolivarian Revolution,” Glover told theGrio.

“We all embraced Hugo Chavez as a social-champion of democracy, material development, and spiritual well-being.”

Others, including Argentine soccer legend Diego Maradona, paid their respects via Twitter. "So long comandante @chavezcandanga, we will miss you forever #ChavezVive," Maradona posted Wednesday

"Ruling Classes hated Hugo Chavez. RIP," tweeted comedian Roseanne Barr.

"You won't hear much nice about him in the US media in the next few days. So, I thought I'd say a couple things to provide some balance," tweeted filmmaker Michael Moore Tuesday.

"54 countries around the world allowed the US to detain(& torture) suspects. Latin America, thanks 2 Chavez, was the only place that said no," he added.

"We spoke for over an hour," Moore said of an encounter with Chavez in 2009. "He said he was happy 2 finally meet someone Bush hated more than him."

Just because Chavez stood up against the USA, did not make him an enemy of the American people. Pretty much everyone agrees these days that GW Bush was a terrible president with terrible ideas and even worse plans. Because one Latin American president saw what was going on at the time, and was vocal about it, he was hated by the right wing. But that was then, when you all thought "W" was God. Now that you have had time to think about it and have come to realize that "W" was a joke of a president, one would think that you might change your opinion slightly towards Chavez. Who am I kidding, I am sure faux news has spun it tonight and you sheeple bought it hook, line and sinker - just like you always do.

Chavez never shared anything with "THE PEOPLE" of Venezuela, let alone the oil riches. He was like Obama, fighting against whatever straw dog he concocted, yet his policies and harm are never connected to him, he was always fighting some faceless entity or corporation who just stood in "the people's way" of the great revolution; A revolution that is never finished till everyone is miserable unless in upper government. The people of Venezuela are like Cubans, living in squalor and thirsting for some for of freedom. As for Hollyweird they believe they will be above the fray anyways and the policies of socialism won't affect them....guess when you have that much money (like Chavez) you get that kind of an attitude.

It's easy to be a socialist when you're a frickin' millionaire. If Roseann Barr, Oliver Stone, etc. are so concerned about poverty and injustice, why don't they use their resources to do something about it? They can put their money where their mouths are.

Otherwise, why do we care what they think?

kaybee: Actually, this idiots aren't socialists, they are pathological liars. It's their marketing ploy. They understand that there is a lot of money to be made in the capitalist system by playing to dumb and dumber. After all, Obama has won two elections, so there must be a lot of dumb people in this country. Those voters will fall for any claim that someone is "standing up for them" against the evil capitalists. The fact that the celebrities make more money in that capitalist, free-market, evil system, than 99.9% of the evil corporation people seems to not register with the dumb and dumber crowd.

Not one of them would be anything more than a regular factory worker if they actually lived in the places where they are promoting the great socialism. And, of course, they would never dream of "spreading" their wealth.

That would be because every wingnut gun owner started loading up the minute any gun control was mentioned. O bowed down to insurance companies? Please look at the history of O care... That would be the REPS who forced changes to O's plan that basically gave the golden egg to the insurance companies. As for those who laud HC for giving back to the people and the low cost of gas there??? Omg.. you don't read do you. The govt subsidizes gas to the tune of 23 BILLION a year. His govt is full of cronyism and corruption. He dismantled their own constitution to do as he pleased and stay in office longer. You're wrong about that part, witchrunner. The dumb people are the ones who voted for Dubbya twice. Some of them still believe his lies about WMDs in Iraq.

kaybee: Of course, you do realize that Bush did tell the truth, don't you? The problems libs have on the WMD issue is that the dem leadership has purposely lied about what Bush said. So, if you don't take the effort to find out what he said, then there isn't much that can be done to educate you. But, please proceed to prove me wrong and point out exactly what you think Bush said that was a lie.

As for the people who voted for Bush, well, you are right that they weren't too smart. They thought they were getting a conservative and they ended up with someone who gave the dems pretty much everything they wanted. But, it was still better than Kerry or Gore. It's just that I wish they'd have selected someone different in the primaries.

What makes Obama so smart? What has he done that has helped this country and the economy? And please say why it was even designed to help the country or the economy. I only ask because I've yet to find one who can come up with a logical answer. So, go ahead and make my day and be the first!

        #1.57 - Thu Mar 7, 2013 7:35 PM EST

kaybee: Glad you admitted that Bush told the truth! You're the one that made the assertion that Bush lied, and now, when asked what he lied about, you can't point to anything. Such is the philosophy of Allinsky and his minions. You do realize how dumb the "back at you" statement is, don't you? It's easy to say that someone lied. But, when asked what they lied about, if they don't want to tell you, it means that they know that they made a blatant lie in their assertion.

Yes, I've dealt with people like you before. And I know that when someone won't answer a simple question and tries to divert attention, then that is a blatant admission that they are lying. Personally, I don't care who anyone is talking about, if they assert someone is a liar, they'd better be able to prove it. If they can't, then they are telling me that they are too stupid to know what they are talking about and have no basis to support their beliefs. I can only assume that you listen to a blow hard like Chris Mathews and believe everything he, or someone like him says.

OK, let's make it easy for you. Bush pointed out that intelligence indicated that Saddam had WMDs and was seeking enriched uranium. And, yes, they found some old chemical stuff that could be used to kill thousands of people at a time. It was reported, but the line goes "Bush said there were WMDs and none were found, so he lied." To a lefty who is only interested in vilifying the opponent, the distinction makes no difference. On the other hand, if Bush were a dem, it'd make all the difference in the world. Just a fact of life.

Actually, Sean Penn has spent a great deal of time living in Haiti, where his charity organization has been working to try to help people recover from the horrible earthquake they had a few years back. He basically lived in a tent in what amounted to a refugee camp for months at a stretch.

Penn may be looney, but he's genuine. He puts his money -and- his body where his mouth is. I may disagree with most of what he says, but I can't say he's ignorant of the conditions "on the ground" in the nations he visits.

Speaking of which, how many times have some of the folks here discussing how "bad" Venezuelans have it been to Venezuela and spent time discussing the matter with folks that actually live there? I'd wager that most of them have absolutely no idea what the average Venezuelan thinks or feels about Chavez and his reforms.

Crime, drugs, murders and Communist torture, do not allow anyone to enter Venezuela. (at their own risk). It has more severe violence than equaling that of the bad Communist Countries, of which no one is allowed to enter.

So get your facts straight. This is a Country worse than Cuba, where no other person is allowed to travel. Poverty is everywhere---Chavez receiving billions upon billions from their oil rich Country---did any go to the "slaves" there?--Nothing.

I was close enough to Texas, vacationing in China. We wanted to visit Houston, but were warned it is too dangerous to go there--0.17 miles away and You still can't see Texas beyond the pollution.

Crime, H2S, murders and evangelical torture, do not allow anyone to enter Texas. (at their own risk)(lol). It has more severe violence than equaling that of the bad Capitalist States, of which no one is allowed to enter(?).

So get your facts straight. This is a State worse than Cuba, where no other person is allowed to travel. Poverty is everywhere---Bush and Perry receiving billions upon billions from their oil rich puppet masters---did any go to the "slaves" there?--Nothing but the min amount they can get away with that is paid to their undocumented workers....

I think what many need to understand is capitalism and socialism are not black and white. There is a balance to be had. That balance should be that people profit from their work but there also have to be social programs to help keep children and the ill from poverty. There also has to be protection for the workers from companies that will exploit them like any other resource the rich and powerful will abuse. People say it is not Government that should maintain the balance but here in the U.S.A. we designed our government to be of and for the people. We need to stop blaming teachers, firefighters, postal workers, etc. and start looking at the Senate. I say drop the U.S. Senate all together and have Governor's be the liason between their State Senate and the President.

Well we got capitalist firebrands and Chavez was a socialist firebrand! Where do we go from there? He helped the downtrodeen of his country - to the chagrin of the oligarchs. Let's not forget he was reelected, notwithstanding the efforts of the U.S. to prevent it. For me his most important action was to stand up to Goliath as it causes mayhem around the world! We will miss you, Hugo!

Chavez was loved by the poor, because he gave them $5 a week instead of $1 a week. They loved that. However, he took from the successful to give it to them. Sound familiar?

You all can say what you want, but the fact remains Hugo Chavez donated thousands of gallons of heating oil for the poor and needy in New England through Joe Kennedys' charity , this charity asked for donations from all the major oil companies in and out of our country, none except Citgo responded with anything but lip service(like most of you), Citgo acted at the behest of Hugo Chavez, like I said say what you want, actions speak louder than words.

@ Irwin, it is obvious that you are well read, however, I trust you have never lived inside a communist country. I on the contrary have. You see, I am Cuban and saw the downfall of my country into the hand of Castro, Chavez's buddy.

Yes, Chavez was on his way to turning Venezuela into another Cuba, and us, the ones who know communism well are only delighted that he was cut short.

Communism does not "help" the poor, it disables everyone. You cannot express yourself, you have no paternity over your children because they are the "property" of the "state". When the kids turn 14, the militia knocks at your door, and takes them into the mountains to teach literacy to the campesinos. Girls come back raped and sometimes pregnant.

Education is free, but you can't do anything with it, because there are no jobs available. You become an engineer, but can't build a thing because there are no materials.

Yes, health care is also free, because there is none. If you go to the hospital in Cuba, you must take along your sheets and towels, medicine too, if you happen to have any. If you need stitches, they may have some, but lack anesthetics, or vice versa.

If one is a Cuban living in Cuba, one cannot visit the tourist sites, unless one is a prostitute and in the company of a tourist John.

I really have a problem with people who are totally ignorant speaking out.

As for Sean Penn, he's had a little too much acid in that brain of his. Before he sets out to rescue the world, perhaps he can contemplate rescuing himself.

Gracias por permitirme expresar mi opinion, si viviera en Cuba, u otro pais comunista no pudiera hacerlo. Eduquense por favor antes de opinar.

I was in Cuba on a mission trip two years ago. A woman approached me on the street and asked me to go into a store to purchase milk for her. Her alotment from the state did not amount to enough to feed her children for an entire month. But tourists are not restricted from anything. I could buy milk and pour it into the streets and no one would say a word. This woman could not even enter the store. Think about that...not selling her body, just trying to get milk for her baby. Now that tells me all I need to know about communism. Thanks DrMonica. God bless all who have to live under those conditions.

Absolutely right treesbad. We know who our enemies are. Among them are Sean Penn, Danny Glover, Harry Belafonte, Michael Moore, Roseanne Barr, and Oliver Stone. Nearly all of these Hollywood people, in my opinion, are commies.
However let's not forget about the role that the so called "mainstream
media" plays in this attempt by the international left to deliberately
"disinform" the American public. People like Chris Mathews, Keith
Olbermann, Wolf Blitzer, Christiane Amanpour, Anderson Cooper, Charlie Rose, and Katie Couric are either all useful idiots for the international left, which I think doubtful, or they're complicit in the attempt to deliberately misinform us.

Don't forget that when Joseph McCarthy tried to warn the American people of
the threat that these people posed to the US, they destroy him. So it’s not just
Hollywood. It's the international leftist's that are out to corrupt our society. They're out to destroy our Constitution, our churches, and our
Christian faith. Destroy the foundation upon which our country rests, and the
whole thing crumbles. I think that it was John Adams who said "Our
Constitution is designed only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly
inadequate for any other.” I hate to sound like a religious fanatic, because
I'm not religious at all, but facts are a stubborn thing.

underemployed, most actors and actress do not donate their money. They donate their name. This was a controversy a couple of years ago about whether they should be responsible for advertising for non profit organizations and not donating their money. Also this is were they get in trouble with the IRS. They think they can write off their name and time as a donation on their tax returns, which they can not.

Also it is amazing that actors complain about business not paying taxes and about oil subsidies, but actors are worst tax cheats (just above democrat government elected officials) and the entertainment industry gets more government subsidies and tax breaks then oil companies do.

Communism rarely works well in the long term, but for millions of people in third world countries, it can be a vast improvement over the dictatorship of a military junta that "disappears" thousands of people on a regular basis. Poverty in these countries is unbelievable, the death rates from hunger and disease are horrific. Education is only for the wealthy and medical care is a fantasy. So communism can look like a big improvement to them. The same thing happened in Cuba. While the affluent Cubans hate Castro, many of the truly poor saw their lives improved dramatically. They now have access to education and medical care, which is way more than they had under Batista. Of course, once they're educated, they start yearning for more than basic survival and then the corruption begins to set in and things start to go wrong. The fact that communism always seems to result in a dictatorship of one doesn't help much either. Once abject poverty has been resolved, people start wanting a little freedom.

John Q Public: Have -you- traveled to these countries? If not, you really have no leg to stand on in the argument, either.

Underemployed pointed out several truths about communism, but he's not really endorsing it. In theory, it's a great system. It just never works in the long run because it ignores basic human nature. There's never been a successful communist government that actually and completely followed the principles of communism.

People want to scream "don't believe everything you read" and yet want us to unquestioningly believe what we read if it supports their preconceived notions.

I agree with underemployed from the statement that Socialism or Communism is, for many poor or destitute people, a step up at least temporariliy. When you attempt to instill Democracy to a group of under nourished and impoverished people, they don't care about the future, only about their immediate needs. It isn't until the basic needs are satisfied that they can look beyond their current needs to survive. That is why so many people become dependent on their government to provide for them and why they become controlled by the same leadership. After they are under a dictatorship and have lost most of their rights or freedoms it is difficult to escape that control. Do you see a similar situation with the entitlement programs in the US or is it just my imagination? I'm not talking about Social Security or Medicare either - us working class folks have paid for and earned that.

He left an estate worth over two billion, that's two thousand million, how did a soldier that rose to the Presidency acquire two billion, off of the backs of the poor that he helped so much, and the poor that are still poor. Spare me!

yea so why the hell did obama give them 250 million more of our tax dollars when we are supposedly close to going in default ourselves? Makes a lot of sense doesn't it? Chavez was nothing next to obama. This idiot is putting us in the poor house.

Materoffact: There will never be a President that impacted the America people as George W Bush has. And we're still suffering from his egotistical behavior.

                  • Tax cuts and loop holes given to the ultra rich.
                  • War monger...costing the American people trillions. Invading foreign soil without congressional approval and based on his own lies.
                  • Prior to 9/11/2000, ignoring information brought to his attention that there was imminent danger of attack from Bin Laden's terrorist groups.
                  • On the morning of 9/11/2000, hiding in a elementary school in Florida...absolutely worthless in the face of the attack on this country.
                  • When and who ordered the placement of bombs in strategic locations, pulled the trigger and watched as the towers imploded?
                  • How does a commercial aircraft going hundreds of miles an hour nose dive into the earth leaving a gigantic hole, but with no sign of the plane?
                  • How does a commercial aircraft going hundreds of miles an hour swoop down to ground level, pull back as though to land, then crashed into the Pentagon leaving no sign of the plane?
                  • Why were so many young lives lost under Bush's watch trying to bring down Saddam Hussein instead of searching for the man responsible for all the above?
                  • Why did Bush have inspectors scour every inch of Iraq looking for WMD?
                  • And when there were none found, why did Bush lie to this country saying WMD were found and promptly invaded that country without seeking or recieving Congressional approval?
                  • All the years wasted on bringing down a man and ultimately leaving this country helpless. And in the end dooming far too many American lives trying to teach a people the concept of living free.
                  • Oh...and Bin Laden? Well, Bush never found him...not enough man power for that and fighting two other wars.
                  • However, there is good news...Barrack Obama kept an extremely important promise he made to the American people. Bin Laden is dead.

Maybe some of that 30 billion is in some actors account somewhere. Loyalty is bought all the time. But then again thats giving them the benefit of the doubt. These actors are just naturally stupid.

Materoffact: That's an interesting question. Almost as interesting as the one asked Mitt Romney for months. How much money do you have in off shore accounts?

There are plenty of US financial institutions that would love to "store" his riches for him. Why would he need to send them to another country? Oh! Taxes, of course. Why didn't I think of that.

What's good for the goose is just as good for the gander. You tea bags don't want Obama...he's this and that, and all bad. But you would have put Mitt Romney in charge of this country and God only knows where we would have been in 4 years.

And talk about stupid...that poor man was a joke. And his 47% remark was the cherry on top of the cake. Take care of the wealthy...screw the rest.

I truly believe that if I were a pompous azz teabagger (oh Lord deliver me) I would have had to sit this last election out. How anyone with a rational thought could vote for that poor man is a wonder. But we all know that he would be only a figurehead...Wall Street, Big Corps and banks, along with the crimes bosses would really rule this country.

If you know, will you tell me who rules Barrack Obama?

The poverty didn't just appear when Chavez rose to power. Abject poverty was there for centuries, and Chavez actually made things better for the poor. He was a long way from being a good guy, but so are many world leaders. What most of you really resent about him is that he called out the US for some of the wrong things that we did. It doesn't make him right. It just means that we really aren't perfect, and he had as much right to criticize as anyone else.

Hugo Chavez was just a motormouth tin horn douschbag. However, "Rev." Pat Robertson (of 700 Club) stated that he wanted Hugo dead. Now that Hugo is dead did Pat cream his jeans? Maybe he thinks he can expand his ripoff business interests into Venezuela, escaping U.S. taxes of course! Big Money got no soul.

Where's their grief for all those that are stricken by cancer and lose that fight. They could roll up those five in a ball and drop it in the ocean. The only result would be pollution.

I am not a rightwing nut but Chavez was a fraud. Caracas is one of the most dangerous crime ridden cities on the planet. He did nothing for the poor. He only enriched his cronies. Yes, he stook haciendas from the wealthy but instead of turning them over to the poor, he turned them over to his cronies. I can only say one thing for Chavez, he was no worse than the other criminals who have always run Venezuela. Also, the rich of Venezuela have only themselves to blame for Chavez. They had the power and the means to transform Venezuela into a modern and prosperous country. Instead they were having ice sent by aircraft to Venezuela for their drinks.

Romney and GWB are frauds. (and liars)

They do nothing for the poor, they enrich themselves and their cronies.

They hide their riches in off shore accounts, which I thought is illegal. Perhaps it just depends on who you are and how much you can line the insiders pockets with.

                  Really dnon46,

Every politician in the last 30 years has done nothing for the poor. The president that you must have so much respect for has made things even worse. I was his middle class but I can barely pay bills, eat and keep my kids in college.

He's done absolutely nothing but make my family worse off. Let me ask , are you of the million people collecting unemployment for the 2nd or 3rd year now? Honestly get off the Bush - Romney thing. Neither are president. If you are a Michael Moore , Hugo Chavez , Sean Penn, Roseann Barr, or Oliver Stone supporter you are the IDIOT.

Obama is such a freaking phoney. All the left see is a GOD. I happen to believe he is not and I will go as far as to say he should have never been a US president. He has no clue what he is doing.

Kind of makes you wonder how much money Chavez put into Hollywood so he'd get movie star endorsements. If you're a politician, you've got to be backed up by the movie stars, since they know one thing, that you can get paid for reading a script.
