  • Dax Shepard shares heartfelt, humorous tale about father's battle with cancer

We're attracted to celebrities because of their films, television shows, and all the bits of glamour that make up what appears to be an outsized and envious lifestyle. But the times when these people become the most interesting is when that sheen becomes a little penetrable, when they reveal a little bit about their actual human selves. That reveal is exactly what transpires -- in spades -- in a March 20 blog post by actor Dax Shephard that's going viral.

The "Parenthood" star took to his Tumblr and wrote about losing his father Dave Robert Shepard Sr. to cancer on "December 30th or December 31st, depending on what time zone you were in." The post, titled "My Father's Horniness," speaks beautifully about how Dax helped his father fight and ultimately succumb to cancer -- and gets to the fact that the senior Shepard had a way of charming women right to the end (as you might have sensed from the title).

"It was the only project we ever teamed up on," Dax wrote about helping his dad cope. "We never built a tree house or a soap box derby car together, but you would have never known it by watching us tear through chemo decisions and radiation plans."

Dax and his father's relationship hadn't always been so great. Like so many, their path smoothed out when they found themselves with a new, unwelcome common cause: to "get into the end zone gracefully," as Dax put it.

The actor, based in Los Angeles, made frequent trips to Detroit over the course of his father's final four months. The two did stuff that mattered for the last time: they visited the old houses they once lived in, ate at Dave's favorite restaurants a last time. They apologized, shared tears and hugs. "I spent the majority of our time together running my hand lightly over the tiny little hairs peaking out from the back of his soft, bald head. He let me do that for hours. Without any awareness of it at the time, the trips home turned into a proper Alexander Payne Movie. It became one of the more beautiful experiences of my life," Dax wrote.

Among the most poignant vignettes is Dax's story about his wife, actress Kristen Bell, who while pregnant with their baby, surprised father and son in Detroit. This was toward the very end; Dave was no longer able to do much of anything -- not even speak. She lifted her shirt so he could put his hand on her belly, over his unborn grandchild, and "he left it there for the better part of an hour. He was smiling from ear to ear, sitting contently, unable to put together a sentence, but still capable of connecting to the new family member we were creating."

But the story doesn't end there. Read it for yourself, and learn a little bit more about the man who was making nurses smile until the end, about a father and son who made peace, and a life -- while not perfect -- that was well lived and loved. As one user who re-blogged the post put it, "I never thought I’d get teary eyed over something having to do with Dax Shepard. Yet here I am at work, trying to hold back the waterworks."

And on Thursday, Dax took to Twitter to convey his appreciation for how fans received his writing. "Reading all of these beautiful responses has been overwhelming in the most glorious way. Thank you to everyone who read and shared back."

  • Lindsay Lohan to spend 90 days in locked rehab

Updated, 3:15 p.m. ET: Lindsay Lohan admitted in Los Angeles Superior Court on Monday that she was in violation of her probation and failed to obey all laws after a June 2012 car accident.

In front of Judge James Dabney, Lohan accepted a plea agreement that mandates that she spend 90 days in a "locked rehab facility" -- which means she cannot leave before the end of the 90-day period, even with "permission slips" or "day passes." She also must complete 30 days of community labor, which can be served in New York.

Lohan was also ordered to undergo 18 months of psychological counseling (which the judge confirmed Lohan had already begun) and there are fines and restitution involved as well.

Lohan lied to police when she said she she wasn't behind the wheel of her Porsche when it crashed into the back of a truck on June 8, 2012, in Santa Monica, Calif. As a result of that wreck and her actions immediately following, she was charged with obstructing an officer, lying to an officer, and reckless driving.

Her probation -- part of a plea bargain involving the theft of a $2,500 necklace in 2011 -- was revoked. Both the misdemeanor charges and the probation violation charges were due to be settled during the scheduled trial, which could have resulted in a jail sentence.

Dabney told Lohan to stay out of cars and out of trouble, Reuters reported.

"A suggestion: Don't drive. You're in New York, you don't need a car. ... This is it. If you violate your probation we're not going to be having these discussions," the judge said.

Lohan arrived approximately 48 minutes late for the 8:30 a.m. PT start of proceedings. Clad in a white and pink pantsuit, she was showered with a gold glitter bomb as she passed photographers with attorney Mark Heller.

When will we next see Lohan in court? If all goes well, we won't. The judge specified that the 26-year-old actress doesn’t have to appear for compliance dates so long as she's in compliance with the terms set forth.

  • Valerie Harper says she wants people 'to be less afraid'

Valerie Harper remains forthright about her recent terminal cancer diagnosis in the second part of an extensive chat with TODAY's Savannah Guthrie. In a conversation about her rare cancer, the 73-year-old television icon said that she is happy being open about her fate.

"It has been so warming and so comforting and ... I feel the embrace," Harper said in an interview airing Tuesday. "It feels awful damn good to be open about it, face it and see what you can do."

Facing her diagnosis of leptomeningeal carcinomatosis -- which affects the membranes surrounding her brain -- Harper told Guthrie that she doesn't think about what-ifs, and is ready for what comes next.

"Forgiving is giving up the wish that things could have been different. They weren't. That's the past. Let it go. I have cancer. It's in my brain.... What are you gonna do about it?" Harper said. "I've had such a great run, Savannah. I'm going on 74. I want people to be less afraid. You know, that's ... that's really I guess why I'm sharing it."

Part of the "great run" Harper refers to includes her stint as Rhoda Morgenstern on "The Mary Tyler Moore show" and later its spinoff, "Rhoda." Rhoda, says Harper, has "been the wind and the sails of my career," a charmed time of life. "I didn't know (then that) 'I'm part of a classic,' you just know you're doing a wonderful show."

Grateful for the past, Harper is now looking ahead, and doing so with a positive outlook despite her diagnosis. Harper recalled wisdom imparted by an internist, who Harper says told her, "'Valerie, anyone that's been in oncology for any number of years has seen spontaneous remission. They just have.' So what I'm saying, is keep your consciousness -- your thoughts -- open to infinite possibility and keep yourself open to miracles."

However, Brolin was in the spotlight in January after police found him heavily intoxicated and unable to care for himself on a Santa Monica sidewalk.

  • Bad idea: Airline employee whisks Kim and Kanye around security

Kanye West and Kim Kardashian in 2012.

An airline employee might have thought he or she was helping out a celebrity couple on Tuesday, but the worker's actions put Kim Kardashian and Kanye West at the center of a major security misunderstanding.

The couple had just flown from Brazil to New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport and were trying to make a connecting flight to Los Angeles.

According to a statement from the Transportation Security Administration, "an airline employee escorted the two travelers through a non-public area in order to provide expedited access." In doing so, Kardashian and West ended up bypassing a TSA security checkpoint.

The TSA discovered the situation before the plane took off and Kardashian and West were given a private security screening at the jetway, the statement said. But the actions delayed the flight -- and the other passengers onboard -- for nearly an hour.

The TSA statement puts blame not on the couple, but on the over-helpful employee, and is actively investigating the incident.
