Bell popped the question to Wood in early 2012. (He was spotted shopping for engagement rings in late December).

The pair met in 2005 as costars in Green Day's "Wake Me Up When September Ends" music video. They began dating, and even got matching tattoos back in 2006. Though they called it quits after one year together, they reunited in summer of 2011.

  • Sheldon goes up against Stephen Hawking on 'Big Bang Theory'

    Michael Yarish / CBS

Amy (Mayim Bialik) watches as Sheldon (Jim Parsons) plays a game of Words With Friends against Stephen Hawking.

"The Big Bang Theory's" Sheldon Cooper is about to go head to head with the only person he truly considers his equal: Stephen Hawking.

Photos from THR: Behind the scenes of 'Big Bang Theory'

After an awkward and less than ideal first impression during the CBS hit's fifth season, Hawking returns to the Thursday comedy this week where his friendship with the neurotic Sheldon (Jim Parsons) is threatened when a game of Words With Friends gets a little too competitive.

In a clip from "The Extract Obliteration" exclusive to The Hollywood Reporter, Sheldon's not only impresses himself (naturally!) with his prowess against the theoretical physicist and cosmologist but also gets Amy (Mayim Bialik) going as well -- for completely different reasons.

  • Nirvana bass smashed in video could fetch $40,000

The bass that Krist Novoselic played and Kurt Cobain smashed in the video for Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" will be up for auction by Christie's in London on Nov. 29.

The seller of the 1960s Japanese Zen-On bass was a teenager at the time of the video's shoot; he had applied to be an extra, and grabbed the bass from the set.

Knowing the bass would be destroyed, Novoselic sought an inexpensive piece of gear, and purchased the bass at a local pawn shop. The instrument is expected to fetch between $24,000 and more than $40,000.

  • Ryan Gosling makes surprise appearance at Texas School for the Deaf

    Mike Cassese / REUTERS file

    Ryan Gosling earlier this fall.

Hey girl, here's another reason to love Ryan Gosling. Over the weekend the 31-year-old actor attended a charity event benefiting the Texas School for the Deaf in Austin. Those who organized the Spooky Skedaddle 5K and Festival didn't know beforehand that the "Notebook" hunk would be gracing them with his presence.

"You should have told me Ryan Gosling would be there ;)," @FreeFunInAustin tweeted to the school. "Ha :)," the organization replied. "We didn't know either!"

Even at 12 years old, Ryan Gosling was a little charmer

Anne Adams, the executive director of the Texas School for the Deaf, told E! News that Gosling (who is currently in Texas filming a Terrence Malick flick) was joined by a film crew and his costars Michael Fassbender and Rooney Mara.

"Ryan was extremely kind, allowing lots of photo ops with fans and when the director told him, 'Enough,' he said, 'No, one more,' and pulled a small deaf child out of the line for a picture. Ryan is a wonderful person and we were delighted that they came!"

Ghada Soufan, a local college student, posted a pic of Ryan surrounded by kids in costume at the event. After tweeting that "RYAN GOSLING JUST LOOKED AT ME," Ghada went for the gold and got a picture taken of herself and a pal with the plaid-clad hunk. (She hashtagged the pic #bestdayever. We'd have to agree on that one.)

  • Give new 'X Factor' host Khloe Kardashian a chance!

    Kwaku Alston / Fox

Khloe Kardashian has starred on a series of E! reality shows about her family, and now, she's co-hosting "X Factor."

After months of rumors, the new hosts of "The X Factor" were officially announced two weeks ago. Mario Lopez and Khloe Kardashian will be introducing the vocal hopefuls and keeping things moving when the judges drone on when the live rounds of the competition kick off on Wednesday night.

But just moments after The Clicker shared the big news, our readers chimed in with some strong opinions on our Facebook page.

"What qualifications does Khloe Kardashian have? She is nothing a nobody. Famous for being what.. Nothing," wrote Becky Killion.

"Get rid of Khloe! Give Slater another co-host!" Felix Brown added.

And frankly, those were some of the nicer comments.

The question is: Why all the criticism for Khloe? This is a hosting gig, not the role of judge, coach or mentor. Given the sheer number of boob-tube hours Khloe's logged between "Keeping Up With the Kardashians," "Kourtney and Khloe Take Miami" and "Khloe and Lamar," surely she can handle being a co-host.

But there seems to be something else at play in the reactions some have had to the news -- sort of a general Kardashian overload.

Those who keep up with the Kardashians only when the clan hits the gossip pages are no doubt at least a little familiar with the most famous members of the family -- the trio of brunette sisters who share the spotlight on more than one E! show. But those same folks often don't really know the gals as individuals. Kim, Kourtney, Khloe ... "What's the difference?" they think.

That means each Kardashian gets painted with the same broad-brush reputation. But alas, despite the family resemblance, the sisters are far from the same.

Kim is, without a doubt, the primary headline-grabber of the bunch. Relationships, marriages, diets, designer duds -- she's been through them all.

Kourtney's the family girl who occasionally makes magazine covers too. Of course, the devoted mother of two has what some may consider questionable taste when it comes to the father of those little ones. Thus the magazine covers -- and a hefty amount of comments from her siblings.

And then there's Khloe. Sure, she's been in the tabloid spotlight as well. First -- and most notably -- for her whirlwind relationship and subsequent marriage (after just a month) to NBA player Lamar Odom. The general consensus among gossip rags (and the general public) at the time was that the union wouldn't last as long as ... well, the marriage big sister Kim swept through with now ex-husband Kris Humphries. But three years later? Khloe and Lamar are still going strong.

The next most frequent Khloe-related topic to hit headlines is her struggle to start a family. Hardly a salacious topic, Khloe's shared some of her fertility troubles on "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" and discussed it further in interviews.

Oh, and there's one more thing about Khloe that makes celebrity news -- her waistline. She looks great, but she's not a sample-size model or TV tiny, and it seems in Tinseltown, that's practically a crime. But she doesn't apologize for it (even when mom Kris Jenner is the one doing the insulting) and she doesn't go on drastic diets to turn it around for the pleasure of the press.

Khloe's no "bad girl." She's no gossip queen. She's just ... Khloe. Fans of the Kardashian franchise of reality shows often consider her the most relatable twig on the family tree. She's the one you'd want to hang out with, go shopping with, talk about guys with and snark about frienemies with.

So for those who are only peripherally familiar with Khloe, don't judge her before you get to know her. She might bring something special to "The X Factor" and provide an entertaining balance between the onstage performances and the comments from Simon Cowell and the rest of the panel. Or she might flop. Who knows?

Either way, she deserves a chance to show what she can do on a different sort of reality TV show than the ones she's so used to.

Viewers will get to see just how Khloe handles her new job when she joins "The X Factor" on Oct. 31 at 8 p.m. on Fox.

Will you give Khloe Kardashian -- and her co-host Mario Lopez -- a shot on "The X Factor"? Or has the casting news turned you off the singing competition? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.

  • Denzel Washington tops list of actors who should play Jesus

It's fun to play armchair director, and tapping into that fantasy is exactly what Vanity Fair and "60 Minutes" did in a new online poll. They asked: "If you were directing a new film version of the New Testament, which actor would you cast to play Jesus?"

Denzel Washington was the winner, with 21 percent of people choosing him to play Jesus. Runner up was Daniel Day-Lewis, followed by Al Pacino. Ryan Gosling barely edged out Woody Allen for the fourth spot and Philip Seymour Hoffman came in last.

It should be noted, however, that 15 percent of respondents chose "none of them."

So who would you cast to play Jesus? Remember, Russell Crowe is out -- he's already been tapped to play Noah. Film fans, take it away on Facebook!

  • Ellen DeGeneres dresses up as 'Modern Family's' Sofia Vergara for Halloween

Michael Rozman / Warner Bros. via AP

Daytime talk host Ellen DeGeneres dressed up as her guest and fellow CoverGirl, Sofia Vergara, on Wednesday's show.

Ellen DeGeneres kept things in the family -- the CoverGirl family -- this Halloween. The 54-year-old comedian dressed up as fellow makeup spokeswoman Sofia Vergara on Wednesday's episode of "The Ellen DeGeneres Show."

Wearing a recreation of the "Modern Family" star's teal Zuhair Murad Emmys dress (yes, the one that split down the backside! ), Ellen did a pretty hilarious Sofia impersonation.

"Muchas gracias everybody, muchas gracias, hola! My name is Sofia Vergara," Elen said in a thick accent. "I am easy breezy beautiful CoverGirl from Colombia. Happy Halloween. As you can see, I put my pumpkins out."

LOL! Avril Lavigne's ex-husband dressed up as her for Halloween

"I like being Sofia Vergara, but it's hard being this beautiful," Ellen quipped. "I'm so busy with CoverGirl and Diet Pepsi and Burger King and my clothing line, the award-winning 'Modern Family.' I get so much work with this fake accent. People think it's real but...."

At that point, Sofia walked out, surprising Ellen. "Your ass looks huge...Ellen," she exclaimed.

"What? Sofia. Hi Sofia, I didn't know you were here," Ellen said.

Here are more stars' TV Halloween ensembles

Sofia, 40, questioned Ellen about her costume's padded rear end. "I mean what is this?" she asked. "You look ridiculous."

    "I feel sexy!" said Ellen.

Sofia graciously taught Ellen a few phrases in Spanish before suggesting to her fellow CoverGirl, "Let's go dancing!"

And dance they did. Happy Halloween, y'all!

  • Oliver Stone: Sandy is punishment for Obama and Romney ignoring climate change

    Handout / Reuters

    Oliver Stone

If there's one thing Oliver Stone wishes would come out of the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, it's the hope that President Barack Obama and his Republican challenger, Mitt Romney, pull a U-turn on climate change.

But he's not counting on it.

In an interview with HuffPost Live on Tuesday, the 66-year-old filmmaker expressed dismay that neither presidential candidate has been willing to talk about the impact of global warming, especially after an unprecedented superstorm savaged the East Coast earlier this week with a catastrophic intensity some scientific experts have attributed to warming seas and melting of polar ice.

"I was a little disappointed at the third debate when neither of them talked about climate control and the nature of the situation on earth," Stone said. "I think there's a kind of a weird statement coming right after it. This is a punishment. Mother Nature cannot be ignored."

The Born on the Fourth of July helmer predicted that the increasing climate crisis will continue to rear its ugly head well beyond the current election.

He added: "That's all I thought about. The storm will pass. The campaign will pass. But unfortunately the nature of this present world situation will not."

Stone, by the way, also revealed that he voted early and cast his ballot for Obama, despite bashing the president for continuing some of the Bush administration's policies in a new book he co-authored called "The Untold History of the United States" that hit stores yesterday.

  • Alec Baldwin's wife during storm: I had to move my red carpet dresses

Alec Baldwin and his wife Hilaria Thomas, residents of Manhattan's Greenwich Village neighborhood, rode out Hurricane Sandy in their apartment, and documented the experience on video. How did the couple manage to make it through the storm? Well, not without a few hardships. Such as having to move Thomas' gowns out of her leaking closet and to a drier location.

"We already have a leak. Of course, in my closet. I have to take out all my red carpet dresses, because of the leak," Thomas said as Baldwin took video of the dresses, draped sadly over a bedside in the wake of storm-related dampness.

Thomas then bravely steps out on her balcony, scanning potted plants that have been toppled over ("Maybe that's where my leak is from?" she speculates) before going back inside, where she later becomes a little stir crazy. "It's yoga time," Thomas says as she preps for a candelit workout.

By 5:45 a.m Tuesday, with the power out, the couple are left to watch a movie on their laptop, with what little battery remains. Their film of choice: "Mirage," with Gregory Peck. Why? Ever the director, Baldwin feeds Thomas her line: "So while we're in a blackout, we're watching a movie with a blackout."

By Wednesday, Baldwin's foray into filmmaking seemed to be over. The actor was back to tweeting. "I suppose, at this point, the critical mass has been reached re a need 4 action on climate change."

  • Brad Pitt donates $100,000 to marriage equality efforts

Brad Pitt is proving, once again, he's more than just a pretty face. It was announced on Wednesday that the actor has agreed to donate $100,000 to the Human Rights Campaign, the nation's largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender civil rights organization, on behalf of the group's marriage equality efforts.

Pitt has agreed to match contributions from HRC members and supporters up to $100,000 in order to direct resources to the marriage campaigns entering their final week in several states.

Why Brad Pitt's Chanel No. 5 commercials are crazy genius

"It's unbelievable to me that people's lives and relationships are literally being voted on in a matter of days," Pitt wrote in an email sent to HRC members and posted on the HRC website. "In Maine, Maryland, Minnesota and Washington, voters will go to the polls to decide if gay and lesbian couples -- our friends and neighbors -- are worthy of the same protections as everyone else. But that's the system we have and I'm not going to back down from the fight of loving and committed couples to have the ability to marry."

This isn't the first time Pitt has lent his support to marriage equality. He also gave a similar contribution to the unsuccessful effort to defeat California's Proposition 8, which banned same-sex marriage, in 2008.

  • Christina Aguilera and Blake Shelton knockout half of their 'Voice' teams

    NBC

Chevonne and De'Borah face off in the knockout rounds on "The Voice."

And the knockout rounds are already over, folks! On Monday night, fans of "The Voice" watched as coaches Adam Levine and Cee Lo Green eliminated half of their teams, whittling them down to just five contestants who will compete in the live rounds. Tuesday night, it was Christina Aguilera and Blake Shelton's turn to make the tough decisions.

So which artists made it through to the live shows?

See which contestants Adam and Cee Lo sent through to the live shows during Monday night's episode

    Team Christina

The first two to face off were Devyn DeLoera and Laura Vivas. "I want to see who can deliver a powerful performance under pressure," Christina says of the pairing. Devyn decides to take on a doozy of a song: Whitney Houston's "I Have Nothing," while Laura takes on Marc Anthony's "I Need to Know" and shows versatility by singing half the song in Spanish. In the end, Devyn's ambitious song choice won Christina over and she was sent through to the live shows.

Next, Christina pairs Adriana Louise against 16-year-old Celica Westbrook because they are "both powerful pop singers." Adrianna chooses "Already Gone" by Kelly Clarkson to show off her "emotion" and Celica goes with Justin Bieber 's "Never Say Never" because he's in her age range. Christina sends Adrianna through and tells a heartbroken Celica, "Don't hate me!"

Because of their "two different styles," Alessandra Guercio and Dez Duron are pitted against each other. Alessandra takes on Rihanna's "Take a Bow," while the former football star Dez decides to tackle Lionel Richie's "Stuck on You." Christina praises Alessandra's raspy tone and Dez's runs, but chooses to keep Dez on her team. (The ladies in the crowd seem very happy with her choice.)

Christina decides to go for a "fun" matchup by pairing Chevonne and De'Borah together. Chevonne chooses "Dancing With Myself" to celebrate how far she's come in the competition, while De'Borah picks "You Found Me" by The Fray because she can really relate to the song. Christina sends De'Borah through to the live shows. "I love Christina so much. I'm grateful that she chose me," De'Borah says. Chevonne ignores Cee Lo's numerous "byes"

Aquile and Sylvia Yacoub are Christina's final two performers of the knockout rounds, with Aquile choosing "Grenade" and Sylvia decides to choose one of her coach's most popular tunes "Fighter." "That's hard to do," Christina tells her during rehearsals. In the end, Christina keeps Sylvia, which completes her team for the live rounds. "I've got five amazing people on my team and they're going to rock," Christina says.

(Sidenote: How hilarious was Adam's Randy Jackson joke during Cee Lo's critique of their performances? "Who's Randy Jackson?" Blake asks and Cee Lo jokes that he's "Michael Jackson's brother." LOL.)

How Sandy is messing with TV

    Team Blake

For his first battle of the night, Blake pairs Gracia Harrison and Liz Davis as they are both country singers and he doesn't want to "split the vote" once the show gets to the live rounds. Gracia chooses "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" by Aerosmith to show her versatility and Liz picks one of Blake's wife Miranda Lambert's biggest hits "Gunpowder and Lead" because it's a lot like her personality (aka "edgy"). Blake was "confused" by Gracia's song choice, so he goes with Liz as the winner.

Rudy Parris and Terry McDermott are the next two contestants to face off as they are both rockers and Blake is looking for a well-rounded team filled with artists from different genres. Rudy goes with Chris Brown's "Forever," which Blake cautions might be too young for the grandfather. Terry goes with a song he covered with his band a lot: "Maybe I'm Amazed" by Paul McCartney. All three coaches prefer Terry and Blake agrees, saying the Scottish rocker knows exactly the artist he wants to be and sends him through to the live shows.

"X Factor's" David Correy finds his birth mother

The country crooner pairs former Team Adam member Colin McLoughlin with 16-year-old Michaela Paige because "they both have great command of their tone and pitch." Colin picks "Breakeven" by The Script, while Michaela channels her inner-rocker with "Love Is a Battlefield." "It comes down to what I'm into the most," Blake says after their performances before going with Michaela. "I love this little girl so much," he explains.

Julio Cesar Castillo, who sings Bieber's "Somebody to Love," is pitted against 15-year-old MarissaAnn, who decides to tackle "Lady Marmalade," which features her former coach Christina. While both performances left us underwhelmed, Blake praises both singers, but goes with Julio as the winner.

In the final knockout battle, Suzanna Choffel takes on former Hey Monday lead singer Cassadee Pope. Cassadee decides to sing "Payphone," one of Adam's band Maroon 5's songs, because it's the perfect range for her and she loves the song. Suzanna takes a risk and picks Bob Marley's "Could You Be Loved." Adam is impressed by Cassadee's take on his hit song and Blake is also impressed, citing Suzanne's "song choice" as her undoing. "I really think we have the most diverse team," Blake says. "I really think I could win this thing again, I do."

What did you think of night two of the knockout rounds? Did the coaches make the right calls? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.

  • Sabrina Bryan on leaving 'Dancing With the Stars': 'You can't be shocked to go home'

    Adam Taylor / ABC

Sabrina Bryan and Louis Van Amstel.

It was déjà vu for Sabrina Bryan on "Dancing With the Stars: All-Stars" Tuesday night. She was handed her walking papers in week six, just as she’d been in season five. Both times, she left the competition on the same date -- Oct. 30.

"This is one of the most amazing experiences I ever could have asked for," a grateful Bryan told reporters after the show with her pro partner and pal Louis Van Amstel by her side. "To have a second chance at something like this has been incredible."

Bryan realized leaving early once again was a possibly, and it wasn’t just her shocking elimination five years ago that brought her to that conclusion.

"It’s an all-star season," she noted. "You can’t be shocked to go home. There are incredible people in this cast. Everybody continues to get better and better every week."

Bryan said that she feared the end was near when she and Van Amstel were left on stage along with other top-scoring duo, Apolo Anton Ohno and Karina Smirnoff.

The former Cheetah Girl was asked if she was glad to be leaving on such a high note. "Um, glad?" Ryan responded. "No. But we feel like we accomplished something. Louis brought so much out of me. He’s all I could ever ask of anyone in any kind of partnership. I feel amazing."

One of the goals Bryan accomplished this season was achieving more vulnerability. Just prior to her dance on Monday, she revealed on air that she’d had a relationship that ended badly in part due to her former beau’s addiction.

"This season, I’m in such a happy place," she said. "My life, my family, my friends are all good. My friend from the East Coast (in the path of Superstorm Sandy) is safe. Everything in my life feels good right now.

"Every one of you guys (reporting on the show) asked me what I’d do differently this season after I got the chance to be on it. I said I’d take a moment every day to take in what I have. I realize this time how blessed I am for everything."

Bryan’s professional plans are up in the air. She may return to the "Dancing" show in Las Vegas. Personally, she and Van Amstel plan to take a cruise together in December to the Caribbean.

"Our ‘Dancing With the Stars’ journey ends, but not our personal journey," Van Amstel said.

"We’re going to be doing lots of dancing," Bryan added.

  • James Bond takes on James Bond in 'Deathmatch' video

Talk about spy vs. spy! James Bond fans may have long wondered which Bond is the greatest. But which one would survive a death match: Roger Moore, Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan or Daniel Craig?

Brad Hansen, an editor and director with his own YouTube channel, decided to find out. Using his top-notch editing skills, he spliced together scenes from various James Bond films that appear to pit one Bond against the other, in his latest short film "Deathmatch."

There's Daniel Craig and Sean Connery in an aerial dogfight! There's Pierce Brosnan and Timothy Dalton training guns on one another -- and a rematch involving rockets, missiles and cars all at the same time. And then there's poor old George Lazenby. It's not so much what Daniel Craig does to him or not -- Lazenby always loses.

You may not agree with the one man left standing at the end ... but the ride getting there is absolutely worth taking.

  • Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel snag audiences, David Letterman goes on solo

"Jimmy Kimmel Live" planned to take New York by storm this week -- alas, it was the other way around. But, a night after canceling the show as post-tropical storm Sandy bore down on the Eastern Seaboard, Jimmy was in business Tuesday at the Brooklyn Academy of Music's Harvey Theater. And he snagged a live studio audience to watch!

"I was born in Bay Ridge. I grew up in Mill Basin. Tonight, I have returned to save my people from the storm," Kimmel kicked off his monologue. "Thank you for ignoring the local authorities to be here tonight for our first show ... Mayor Bloomberg will be here shortly to have you arrested."

Kim Kardashian, Lady Gaga and more tweet about Sandy, Red Cross relief

As for his unexpected night off: "I stayed in my hotel room, I drank all the little bottles of shampoo and I passed out."

Before welcoming guests Howard Stern and Tracy Morgan, Kimmel also touched on hot topics like the fuss over the mayor's sign language translator, Lydia Callis ("It's hard to tell where the sign language ends and the interpretive dance begins") and photobombing types who will run outside in their bathing suits just to get on the news ("Only risk your life when it's hilarious").

"I was begging Jimmy to cancel the show!" Stern announced. "I'm driving along and I'm trying to get here, and I thought, 'Why am I really trying to be here tonight?'"

GTL forever! "Jersey Shore" house unharmed by storm

Letterman, meanwhile, carried his edgy tone over from last night, joking that they normally ignore their audience anyway and lamenting the harsher storm facts like the concerned part-time New Yorker that he is.

"Odd name for such a miserable force of nature," the "Late Show" host said of Sandy. "Effects felt from Bermuda to Canada, 8 million homes and businesses without electricity...Economic losses could reach $20 billion -- and most of that is in paper towels."

"I had to come in, I used up all my sick days," he cracked. "I feel like Clint Eastwood, an old guy talking to empty chairs."

Production shut down on "30 Rock," "Gossip Girl" and more

Kate Hudson was the previously scheduled guest, but she canceled and Weather Channel expert Jim Cantore ended up doing the honors instead, along with singer Andrew Bird.

"Oh, it had nothing to do with the hurricane, it's just me," Letterman cracked about Hudson being a no-show.

Elsewhere in town, Studio 6B was packed once again for "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon" (would guest Donald Trump have bothered to show otherwise?), who thanked the crowd for coming out.

    Donnie Wahlberg records apartment flooding

"I'm so glad you're here because last night's audience was the worst," Fallon said. "Last night we had to do the show in front of a bunch of empty seats -- or as Clint Eastwood calls that, a full house."

"A lot of people don't have access to Facebook or Twitter" in the wake of the storm, he continued. "A lot of people couldn't get on Instagram, either. This morning I had to show a picture of what I ate for breakfast to my cab driver."

New York needs deep-pocketed do-gooders like these folks right now

Fallon also had a good zinger for Trump, as they talked about what the "Celebrity Apprentice" chair will do with his $5 million if President Barack Obama doesn't heed his call to turn over his college and passport records.

Noted Fallon: "New Jersey could use it."

Marc will step in to the role and we couldn't be more pleased to have his talent and energy in the cast."

  • 'Back to the Future' star fears her home is lost to Sandy

    Mark Davis / Getty Images

"Back to the Future" star Lea Thompson may have been at the "Dancing With the Stars" taping on Monday, but her mind was on Superstorm Sandy. The actress, who currently stars on ABC Family's "Switched at Birth," had every reason to believe her home on Fire Island, N.Y., had been ravaged – and likely lost. The storm's surge had destroyed homes and property in the beach community Monday.

Surprisingly, Thompson was not only calm about the situation, she also appeared her usual, exuberant self. How come?

“Well, because it’s hilarious,” she told TODAY. “My husband just paid off a 30-year mortgage in September. I thought this would be just perfect if the house is completely gone!”

The good news is that the actress, who played Marty McFly’s mother and his girlfriend in the "Back to the Future" franchise, has flood insurance. The bad news? “You really don’t get that much,” Thompson noted. “It’s sad. I’m mourning my little house on Fire Island.”

Thompson, who was at "DWTS" to cheer on "Switched at Birth" co-star Gilles Marini, is hoping to make a trip back East next week to survey the damage. “I just know that it was completely flooded. It’s just surreal. My kids grew up there.”

Despite the potential personal loss, the actress is keeping things in perspective.

“The good news is that no one is there and there have been such great storm warnings," she said. "They evacuated everyone from the island. I hope everyone is safe.”

  • 'Star Wars 7' will need The Force to be with it

At first, it sounded like a typical business news story, albeit one involving two major movie names: Disney announced Tuesday that it was buying Lucasfilm. But right there in the story: word that the newly purchased company plans to release "Star Wars: Episode 7" in 2015.

    Chris Pizzello / AP

Will the new "Star Wars" films be winners, or straight from the Dark Side?

Although he'd said in the past that he wasn't going to make any more "Star Wars" movies other than the original three and the three prequels, George Lucas has changed his mind. Well, kind of.

In a video discussion with Lucasfilm co-chair Kathy Kennedy, Lucas explains that he didn't really go back on his word.

"I always said I wasn't going to do any more ('Star Wars' films)," he said. "That's true ... but that doesn't mean I'm not going to turn it over to Kathy."

Lucas said that he had produced story treatments for the next trilogy of films as well as "other movies." Kennedy said that she already was discussing ideas with writers, and noted "the main thing is to protect the characters."

In sequence, the film would come after 1983's "Return of the Jedi," which ends with an Ewok-assisted battle on Endor and features a final scene of the spirits of Obi-Wan, Yoda and Anakin Skywalker watching over Luke and the other Rebels celebrating the end of the Empire.

Lucas and Kennedy haven't said how long after "Jedi" the first new film would be set, or what familiar characters might return. But fans immediately weighed in, of course.

Some weren't sure what to think. "This is definitely a lot to take in," Eric Eisenberg wrote at Cinema Blend. "The prequels were an absolute disaster, but could they ever be redeemed?"

Joked the blog I Watch Stuff, "Though the deal gives Disney control of all the Star Wars characters, as well as their own roster and their Marvel acquisitions, it is not clear if or when Jar Jar, Thor, and Pooh will be made available on a single varsity jean jacket."

Vince Mancini of FilmDrunk.com at least was somewhat optimistic, if you can call it that, writing: "I’d just as soon they let Star Wars die off, like it should have after Episode I, but let’s face it, there’s no way Disney can do worse with Lucasfilm than Lucasfilm’s already been doing."

MTV's Josh Wigler got down to the nitty-gritty -- which characters will we see onscreen? He's wondering if iconic roles will be recast -- can a 70-year-old Harrison Ford still play a believable Han Solo, and would anyone accept another actor in the role?

And, of course, the Disney-"Star Wars" jokes ran fast and furious on Twitter. The hashtag #DisneyStarWars resulted in some fun title suggestions, including "When You Wish Upon a Death Star," "Hoth School Musical" and "Song of the Sith."

Which characters would you like to see in new "Star Wars" films? Is it a good idea to make more? Tell us on Facebook.

  • 'Extreme Cheapskate' tricks wife into eating movie snacks out of the trash

    TLC

Movie concessions are awfully expensive, but that doesn't mean moviegoers should pinch pennies by rooting around for half-consumed snacks from the theater trash. Well, unless you're Roy Haynes, who appears on Tuesday night's episode of the TLC show "Extreme Cheapskates."

Roy actually forks over the cash to take his wife to a movie, but brings his own fruit to snack on. That's not enough for his wife, who wants some actual movie-theater popcorn.

Leaving his wife in the theater while he goes to throw away the peel from the home-brought banana he just snarfed, Roy halts at the theater trash can -- and the mental-cheapskate wheels start turning.

From one trash can, he retrieves a popcorn bag with some kernels still in it. From another, he rescues a soda cup with ice and some liquid still inside. He then takes the items into the men's restroom and dumps out the contents before bringing the cup and bag to the snack bar to utilize the theater's free refill policy. (Hey, at least he washed out the soda cup!)

When he presents the treats to his wife, she's so thrilled she kisses him. But how will she react after she watches the episode and learns that her goodies were recycled garbage?

Roy's episode of "Extreme Cheapskates" airs Tuesday night at 10 p.m. on TLC.

Is Roy a genius cheapskate or was this a disgusting move? Tell us on Facebook.

  • Disney buying Lucasfilm, will release new 'Star Wars' movie in 2015

Phelan M. Ebenhack / AP file

Disney CEO Robert Iger, left, and "Star Wars" creator George Lucas, center, celebrate the opening of a theme park ride in 2011. Disney is paying $4 billion for Lucas' film studio Lucasfilm.

Updated at 7:15 p.m. ET: Walt Disney Co. is buying Lucasfilm in a $4 billion deal that brings the best-selling "Star Wars" franchise under the Disney umbrella, with plans to release Episode 7 of the long-running saga in 2015.

Disney has long had a close relationship with closely held Lucasfilm and founder George Lucas, including featured attractions at Disney theme parks such as Star Tours at Disney's Hollywood Studios in Florida.

"It's now time for me to pass 'Star Wars' on to a new generation of filmmakers," said Lucas, 68, in a statement.

The cash and stock deal is valued at about $4.05 billion, Disney said. Lucasfilm is solely owned by George Lucas.

"This transaction combines a world-class portfolio of content including Star Wars, one of the greatest family entertainment franchises of all time, with Disney's unique and unparalleled creativity across multiple platforms, businesses, and markets to generate sustained growth and drive significant long-term value," Disney CEO Robert Iger said in a statement.

Lucas will act as creative consultant on the new "Star Wars" film, with more feature films expected beyond Episode 7.

The six "Star Wars" feature films have earned a total of $4.4 billion at the box office alone and offer "a sustainable source of high quality, branded content with global appeal," according to the Disney news release.

Related: 'Star Wars 7' will need The Force to be with it

The deal is subject to federal antitrust approval.

In early 2006, Disney struck a deal to acquire "Toy Story" creator Pixar, and in the summer of 2009 it bought the comic book powerhouse Marvel Entertainment.

The company expects the Lucasfilm deal to add to earnings in 2015. Along with the cash, Lucas will end up owning about 40 million Disney shares, which is about a 2.2 percent stake of the 1.83 billion shares that will be in circulation when the transaction closes.

"Because Lucas is private, I would assume most investors would be surprised (by the deal). My point of view is that Disney already has a great portfolio and this adds one more," said Morningstar analyst Michael Corty. "They don't have any holes, but their past deals have been additive" to earnings.

The deal includes Lucasfilm's prized high-tech production companies, Industrial Light & Magic and Skywalker Sound, as well as rights to the "Indiana Jones" franchise.

Kathleen Kennedy, the current co-chairman of Lucasfilm, will become the division's president and report to Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn. She will serve as executive producer for the new movies. Directors for the new movies have not yet been announced.

Information from Reuters and the Associated Press was included in this report.

  • Chuck Berry: 'My singing days have passed'

Recently, Chuck Berry made a rare move: he gave an interview. Visiting Cleveland to accept the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s American Music Masters Award, the 86-year-old met with journalists at the museum’s offices before touring an exhibit celebrating his life.

    Chuck Berry in 2009

Seated in the center of a conference table between friend Joe Edwards and his son Charles Berry Jr., wearing a captain's hat and a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame varsity jacket, Berry was humble, revealing and playful.

"Now let me make a statement," he said at the beginning. "After being before drums for 48 years, it has taken effect in the last four months and I have a strange hiccup that comes out every time I tell the truth." The room erupted in laughter.

At one point, Rolling Stone asked Berry how far the country has come since the days he played segregated venues throughout the South. Berry paused for a moment.

"I never thought that a man with the qualities, features, and all that (President Obama) has, [could] be our President," he said. "My dad said, 'You may not live to see that day,' and I believed him. I thank God that I have." Berry stopped for several seconds while his eyes welled up. "Excuse me," he said.

The most moving moment came when Berry discussed his own future. Explaining that he doesn't hear well, Berry turned to his friend Edwards. "If you don’t mind, Joe, explaining [questions] to me, because I am hearing very little. I’m wondering about my future," he said, raising his finger. "That’s news!"

Berry was asked to expand. "Well, I’ll give you a little piece of poetry," he said. "Give you a song? I can’t do that. My singing days have passed. My voice is gone. My throat is worn. And my lungs are going fast.  I think that explains it."

St. Louis Post-Dispatch writer Kevin C. Johnson argued that people still pay to see Berry monthly at St. Louis’ Blueberry Hill.

"I’ll tell you what that is," Berry said. "They’re having a great time from memory. And I hope that I can continue to enhance their memory because it looks very dim, like I said, you know."

  • 'Jersey Shore' cast reacts to Sandy's devastation at Seaside Heights

    Ian Spanier / MTV

    Jersey Shore cast.

For the past six seasons, Seaside Heights, N.J., has served as part-time home and playground to the always outrageous cast of MTV's "Jersey Shore." It's been the backdrop of arrests, parties, hookups and countless spray tans for Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi and the gang. And now, Superstorm Sandy has left the boardwalk reduced to rubble and there's destruction all around.

E! News reports, via a reporter for the Newark Star-Ledger, that somehow the house featured on the show survived the storm undamaged.

Most of the cast has been online and confirmed that they're safe and sound. But if their Twitter feeds are anything to go by, they're all still reeling from the state of their old stomping grounds.

"Just saw seaside update on TV!" wrote Ronni Magro. "This is crazy living there for 4 summers & seeing in such disaster! What do u mean no more boardwAlk?"

Snooki was similarly shocked, writing, "Seaside Heights suffered bad from the hurricane and my prayers go out to everyone affected! We are all fine here...love you JS."

Jennifer "JWoww" Farley simply tweeted, "Sad day."

The message was a little more lighthearted from Paul "DJ Pauly D" DelVecchio.

"Can't Believe #Sandy Ruined @snooki's PooOorchh !!!! Where Am I Gonna Kick It At Now ??" he tweeted.

But Vinny Guadagnino shifted the focus to one of the real stars of the Jersey shore.

"Just saw our Police Chief Boyd of Seaside on the news risking his life to save people. #HERO," Guadagnino wrote.

As for Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino and Deena Cortese, according to their last tweets, they both lost power early on in the storm and haven't logged on again yet.

  • 'Sesame Street's' Elmo calms children in the wake of Sandy

    Victoria Will / AP file

    Elmo.

Superstorm Sandy made for a frightening time even for the bravest adults in the storm's path. So just imagine how scary the devastating storm was for children who lived through it first hand or even those who simply saw the images of destruction on their televisions. For kids, no amount of statistics or estimated recovery times really explain the weather event or provide comfort in its wake.

Parents have no doubt been working overtime to soothe their affected tykes, and now they have some help from a voice every child trusts.

On Tuesday morning, "Sesame Street's" Elmo visited Brian Lehrer's WNYC's radio show and spoke directly to his young audience. And as it turns out, the Muppet is a hurricane pro, having been through a scary storm on "Sesame Street" in the past.

"Well, the wind started blowing really bad, and we had to put tape on windows and stuff," he explained of the episode. He even had to help his pal Big Bird put his nest back together after the storm destroyed it.

Joining Elmo and host Lehrer was Dr. Rosemarie Truglio, the vice president of education and research for Sesame Workshop. She explained that the episode was created long before Sandy or even Hurricane Katrina. It was meant to help parents if their kids should ever face a similar storm.

"'Sesame Street' is based on a whole child curriculum, and so we focus not only on the cognitive skills, but social and emotional skills of children," Truglio said. "We wanted to have a community show like this where we could model for parents tips -- so that we could model how you prepare for a storm and how you get through the storm with activities ... and keeping your child calm and safe."

As for Elmo, he took a question from a fan who wanted to know if he was scared on Monday night, as Hurricane Sandy hit his hometown.

"Yeah, but Elmo was with his mommy and daddy, so Elmo asked a lot of questions and learned a lot about what was happening," he assured.

His main question of the night was, "Will the wind ever stop blowing?" And he shared the answer he got.

"The windows were moving and stuff and they said, 'Yes, everything would calm down and be OK."

And so it was for Elmo, and hopefully it was for all of his young fans, too.

  • 'The Voice' knockouts send half of Team Adam and Team Cee Lo home

    NBC

Loren Allred (left) and Nicole Nelson face off in the knockout rounds on "The Voice"

Welcome to the Knockout Rounds! "The Voice" has added yet another new creation to the show, where the coaches pair up their singers on the spot to perform a song of their choice and immediately send one home. Pressure much?

Monday night, Adam Levine and Cee Lo Green cut their teams in half as their contestants faced each other.

Adam Levine stands up for Christina Aguilera over weight criticism

    Team Adam

First two to face the knockout rounds were Joselyn Rivera and Kayla Nevarez, who both have a pop star sound which left Adam only wanting one to advance. Rivera killed (in a good way, of course) Beyonc's "Love on Top" by hitting all the difficult notes, while Nevarez gave a slightly more melodic rendition of "Shark in the Water" by V V Brown. And although Nevarez's changes is what Adam wanted, he decided to keep Rivera.

Adam put Joe Kirkland and Bryan Keith against each other (they also have a similar sound--are you starting to see a pattern here?). Kirkland went with "Mean" by Taylor Swift while Keith went with a classic, "Everything I Do (I Do It for You)" by Bryan Adams. It was fun to see Joe take on a T.Swift track, but Keith's spot-on performance of Adams' hit took him to the next round.

Next up was Amanda Brown who sang "Paris (Ooh La La)" by Grace Potter and the Nocturnals against Michelle Brooks-Thompson, who belted "Spotlight" by Jennifer Hudson. Brown seemed to show off an even bigger talent than we gave her credit for, and although Michelle's performance was on point, it didn't compete with Amanda's, at least in Adam's eyes, who chose to advance Brown.

"X Factor's" David Correy finds his birth mother

Loren Allred sang "You Know I'm No Good" by Amy Winehouse, while her knockout round competitor Nicole Nelson chose "If I Ain't Got You" by Alicia Keys. It would seem like Nelson had the upper hand in this battle, but Allred absolutely blows everyone's mind with her vocals, and gets to move forward in the competition.

Lastly for Team Adam, Melanie Martinez took on "Bulletproof" by La Roux, while Sam James performed "Walking in Memphis" by Marc Cohn. Martinez used her (strong) creative juices to make "Bulletproof" all her own, which made Adam's choice a little bit easier. Yes, that means he chose Melanie.

    Team Cee Lo

Green puts fan-favorite Avery Wilson against spunky and energetic Cody Belew. Wilson sang Chris Brown's "Yeah 3x" while Belew performed "Jolene" by Dolly Parton. This might have seemed like a no-brainer at first, but Cee Lo is very unpredictable. And just like that, the guy we thought was going to take it all was out, and Cody was advancing.

    Read our last "Voice" recap!

The next pairing was indie-sounding singers Mackenzie Bourg and Daniel Rosa. We know it was coming someday--Bourg performed Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe," while Rosa sang "Back to December" by Ms. Swift. Bourg completely changes up the catchy tune, which ultimately turned out to be a good thing, because it outshined Rosa's emotional performance in Cee Lo's mind.

Terisa Griffin took a chance by choosing to sing Whitney Houston's "Saving All My Love for You," while fellow powerhouse singer Trevin Hunte gave a soulful rendition of "Against All Odds" by Phil Collins. Let's just say it now, Hunte is a force to be reckoned with, and he moves on in the competition.

Nicholas David got a little playful with Corinne Bailey Rae "Put Your Records On" whereas Michael Wastman went with "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me" by Elton John. Both performances were good, but nothing struck as remarkable. Regardless, Cee Lo chose to advance Nicholas.

The last performance of the night was between rockers Caitlin Michelle and Diego Val. Diego chose "Are You Gonna Go My Way" by Lenny Kravitz, while Caitlin belts "Bring Me Back to Life" by Evanescence. It was a tough call to make, especially with both of their awesome stage presence, but Cee Lo ultimately picked Diego.

What did you think of the first knockout rounds? Did the coaches make the right calls? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.
