  • Britney Spears and will.i.am 'Scream & Shout' about nothing

    YouTube

Britney Spears moves her hands around her head.

No one will ever accuse Britney Spears or will.i.am of being lyrical geniuses, but as their new single went to No. 1 on iTunes this week and the video for "Scream & Shout" goes viral, we had to ask: Is this really all fans want from their pop stars?

The nearly 5-minute dance track plays like a forgotten sample from a Black Eyed Peas song, with Britney doing the Fergie talkie parts in what some are hearing as a pseudo-British accent. That's British, as in England. Not Britnish, as in Louisiana.

The whole thing comes off so visually lazy. More than 3 million people have watched Britney stand still, lie down and half-heartedly vogue. For his part, will.i.am puts his hands to his mouth. Oh! He's shouting. The 853 million people who have made "Gangnam Style" the most watched YouTube video ever are shouting, too. Because it's fun to watch!

It's 2012, so we gave up the why-does-everything-have-to-be-AutoTuned fight years ago. And we're still young enough to know about da club and the music played there, even if we can't stay awake long enough to go dance. But Britney and will are saying NOTHING, and this "Get off my lawn!" rant is for all those who still prefer a song that says SOMETHING.

The princess of pop -- who turns 31 on Sunday -- has had six No. 1 albums over her career. She ranks seventh on Forbes' list of 2012's highest-paid musicians -- $58 million in record sales, touring, endorsements and more. In the '90s, songs like "... Baby One More Time" and "Oops! ... I Did It Again" may not have said anything earth-shattering on their way to No. 1, but compared to "Scream & Shout" ...

    "... Baby One More Time":
My loneliness is killin' me / I must confess I still believe / When I'm not with you I lose my mind / Give me a sign, hit me baby one more time."

    "Scream & Shout":
"Everybody in the club / all eyes on us / all eyes on us / all eyes on us."

Listen for yourself right here (and turn it down if you don't want to blast a couple naughty words):

Granted, it's a will.i.am song and Britney is apparently along for a lyrical ride that only includes telling you to turn this [expletive] up because it's her, [expletive]. But we're such a long way from choreography that brought us the pigtailed schoolgirl here, or the Martian in red leather over here. Why does Britney make dance music if she doesn't even dance anymore?

In a time when 13-year-old Rebecca Black gets a major Internet beat-down for singing about a day of the week, international superstars will.i.am and Britney Spears are screaming and shouting about much less.

Tell us how you like the song. Vote in the attached poll!

  • Fresh 'Iron Man 3' stills offer peek at Rebecca Hall's character

    Marvel

Rebecca Hall in "Iron Man 3."

Tony Stark's latest leading lady looks in need of rescue. New pictures of "Iron Man 3" are in the wild Friday via Marvel.com, and one of them gives fanboys their first look at Rebecca Hall's character, Dr. Maya Hansen.

Hall, best known for her role in "Vicky Cristina Barcelona," looks to have gotten banged up in this pic, as she lies on the ground with a gash on her forehead.

Per Marvel lore, Hansen is a scientist and ex-lover of Robert Downey Jr.'s brilliant industrialist Tony Stark, aka Iron Man. It is Hansen who helps develop the Extremis virus, a nanotechnology serum that links Tony's mind and body to his metal suit as part of the military's long-held ambition to create a super-soldier.

Foreshadowing the difficult challenge that lies ahead for our heavy-metal hero, another photo shows Iron Man's mask with a big crack in it.

No doubt his mettle will be tested plenty in the form of arch-foe Mandarin, played by Ben Kingsley -- though Tony will luckily once again receive a much-needed helping hand from good buddy Col. James "Rhodey" Rhodes (Don Cheadle), otherwise known as War Machine, another pic of whom also surfaced in this latest batch.

"Iron Man 3," directed by Shane Black, hits theaters on May 3, 2013.

  • 'Sons of Anarchy' star who allegedly killed landlady was not on drugs

Matt Carr / Getty Images file

    Actor Johnny Lewis in 2011.

A few questions pertaining to Johnny Lewis' death have been answered -- but the real circumstances surrounding his September death remain a mystery.

The 28-year-old 'Sons of Anarchy' actor died of traumatic injuries sustained in what can only be ruled an accidental fall due to lack of evidence that he jumped or was pushed, according to the official autopsy report released Thursday and obtained by E! News.

Lewis is suspected of killing his landlady before falling to his death from the roof of his residence -- a plunge that, in the opinion of the lead investigator, occurred when he attempted to flee the scene.

Former advisor: Lewis was struggling with mental illness

"He appears to have jumped from an elevated terrace to the driveway while attempting to flee the scene. During the approximately 15-foot drop he apparently lost his balance or struck an object," wrote investigator Jerry McKibben. "This caused him to land so his head impacted the concrete driveway."

McKibben noted that there was a possibility Lewis was under the influence of drugs or alcohol, but, while he was deemed ineligible for tissue donation due to recent drug use, the autopsy turned up no drugs of any kind in his system.

"Decedent died of a fall," wrote L.A. County Senior Deputy Medical Examiner James K. Ribe. "We do not have definitive evidence that the decedent intended to kill himself. We also do not at this time have any evidence that he was pushed. Therefore, the manner of his death is accidental."

Lewis was cremated and buried at sea off the coast of San Diego last month.

  • 'The Walking Dead' has plenty of gore -- and even better emotional moments

Rotting zombies. Gushing blood. Spilled guts. Crushed brains. AMC's hit drama "The Walking Dead" has these things in spades, but the show isn't just about the gory scenes featuring the undead and unlucky humans. Many of "Walking Dead's" best moments are emotional ones among the survivors, whether Rick is crying tears of joy, Carol is screaming in despair or Daryl is quietly singing to an infant.

As the series progresses, "The Walking Dead" has presented more and more of these moving scenes as it moves closer to Sunday's midseason finale, which will likely feature more emotional moments of its own. The promo for episode eight teases the showdown between Rick's gang of survivors and The Governor and his Woodbury thugs, which means brothers Merle and Daryl will find themselves on opposite teams, and Andrea will (unknowingly) take aim at her long-lost pals.

But before that action kicks off, take a few minutes to revisit some of the emotional moments the show has already offered:

"The Walking Dead" airs Sunday at 9 p.m. on AMC.

  • Lindsay Lohan not under the influence when arrested, says lawyer

Despite what many may be assuming about Lindsay Lohan's state of mind when was arrested on assault charges early Thursday morning at a New York City lounge, her lawyer insists she wasn't under the influence.

"I can tell you when I was with her (Thursday) morning; she was in great condition," attorney Mark Heller tells E! News. "She was certainly not intoxicated, certainly not under the influence of drugs. She was clear (and) lucid, her eyes were clear. No alcohol involvement whatsoever on this occasion."

However, Heller said he didn't ask LiLo if she had been drinking or doing drugs at any point during the evening. "It wasn't even brought up," he said, adding, "She was perfectly appropriate. And the police made note of that."

Everything we know about Lindsay's latest arrest

Lohan is set to face formal charges at a Jan. 7 arraignment, but Heller believes he'll prove her innocence before then.

"We are going to be working very earnestly to establish that no charges should even be lodged," he said. "(The police) have already made arrangements to get the video from the ... club, which hopefully will reveal some exonerating information. After that, they could just walk away from the case and decline to even prosecute."

See all of LiLo's many mug shots here

Asked how the "Liz & Dick" star is doing right now, Heller said, "She's sleeping. She was up all night long and went through a very rough ordeal."

  • Gerard Depardieu detained for driving his scooter while drunk

Gerard Depardieu at the FIFA headquarters on Oct. 19, 2012, in Zurich.

PARIS -- French actor Gerard Depardieu was detained for driving his scooter while drunk on Thursday after he had a minor accident in Paris, prosecutors said.

The 63-year-old star of films such as "Jean de Florette" and "Green Card" was held for questioning after he fell from his scooter mid-afternoon, slightly injuring his elbow.

No-one else was hurt in the accident.

One of France's best-known actors for roles in more than a hundred films, Depardieu has recently grabbed headlines for the wrong reasons.

The incident came just months after a car driver filed a legal complaint for assault and battery against Depardieu in August following an altercation in Paris.

Last year, Depardieu outraged fellow passengers by urinating in the aisle of an Air France flight as it prepared to take off, forcing the plane to turn back to its parking spot.

A passenger on the flight said Depardieu appeared to be drunk and insisted he be allowed to use the bathroom during takeoff, when passengers must remain seated.

  • 'Dancing With the Stars' pro Val Chmerkovskiy goes shirtless on 'General Hospital'

"Dancing With the Stars" may be gone until the next season, but fans of pro Valentin Chmerkovskiy can still get one more taste of the dancer in the meantime.

Val Chmerkovskiy appears in a scene on "General Hospital" with Nancy Lee Grahn, who plays Alexis.

  • Reality check for reality TV fans: You're more neurotic

Ratings show us that Americans hunger for reality TV about as much as Honey Boo Boo’s family craves their infamous ketchup-and-butter-topped “sketti.” But while we think we’ve come to know the people on the small screen in shows as varied as “Teen Mom” and “Deadliest Catch,” what do we know about the viewers who regularly tune in?

TODAY.com surveyed nearly 19,000 people and found those who watch reality TV consider themselves more extroverted, more neurotic, and say that they have lower self-esteem than folks who aren’t fans of the genre.

    AP (2), Getty Images

Three big stars of reality TV who generate a fair share of viewer reaction are, from left, Honey Boo Boo, Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino, and Kim Kardashian.

Although both watchers and non-watchers of the genre report relatively high levels of self-esteem, the survey revealed that some viewers actively turn to reality shows to make them feel better about their own lives.

Feeling untidy because of those couple of dishes left in the sink? That’s nothing compared to what you’ll see on A&E’s “Hoarders.”

"That’s clearly about schadenfreude -- taking pleasure in the misfortune of others,” psychiatrist and frequent TODAY contributor Dr. Gail Saltz says. “On the one hand, what’s wrong with feeling a little better about your house when you see someone on TV with a mess and 50 cats? On the other, it’s not a helpful defense mechanism when you have your own things going on that you should be attending to.”

Seventy percent of reality TV fans reported being extroverts compared to 59 percent of non-watchers. And 24 percent of those viewers considered themselves neurotic, compared to only 14 percent of non-watchers, the survey revealed.

“Extroverts are people who gain a lot of what they want from the outside world. Obviously watching someone else’s world is exactly that,” Saltz said. “Neurotic people tend to be worried about how others will judge them. Then you have “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo” -- here’s the family who’s the epitome of ‘we don’t care.’ That would be an enjoyable thing to watch for a person who’s walking around thinking ‘I have to think about what people say.’”

As one fan of the show wrote: “It’s totally hysterical. I laugh the whole time. They have absolutely no embarrassment about anything they do and show you can be happy with very little. Sweet people.  Gross ... but sweet.”

Watching people pick through piles of garbage on “Hoarders” may seem like a considerable decline in the evolution of the reality genre – especially for those who grew up on the simple joy of “Survivor.” But while competition shows certainly paved the way for unscripted programming, the TODAY survey was focused on shows like “Real Housewives” and “Teen Mom” -- a subset of programming where there’s no elimination along the way and no prize at the end.

So what else did the survey tell us about the genre so many publicly snicker at, but privately watch?

    • “Deadliest Catch” -- chronicling the high-seas adventures of crab fishermen -- is the most popular show among men, which might not come as a surprise. But the second-most popular among men? The “Real Housewives” franchise.
    • “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” and the “Real Housewives” franchise were the two most popular shows among women.
    • Women are more likely than men to watch reality programming (49 percent of women versus 24 percent of men.)
    • Younger people were much more likely to watch: 19- 29-year-olds made up 70 percent of respondents.

And sorry, Snooki, but shows like "Jersey Shore" support the concept that some reality TV leaves viewers are appalled but unable to look away. “I like watching the train wreck,” was the common refrain.

But the allure of the train wreck only goes so far. For as pervasive as the programming seems to be, there are plenty of people not watching, and they’re not afraid to say exactly why.

“I think reality show(s) are the stupidest thing ever created for TV and a blight on society,” a non-viewer said in the survey. “I believe [reality TV] is contributing to the dumbing down of our country and promotes bad and immoral behavior,” said another.

While there’s ample opportunity on some shows to watch pretty awful behavior, that doesn’t mean that it’s taking down civilization as a whole, one uncouth incident at a time.

Julie Klausner, who recaps “Real Housewives of New Jersey” and “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” for New York magazine, said, “I know a lot of smart people who watch ‘Housewives’ and ‘Honey Boo Boo,’ and we all have a very specific sense of status, which is, we know when it's not OK to laugh at somebody, and when it makes sense to root for them.”

Regardless of whether you think reality television can be painted with a single brush, either good or bad, the truth is millions of people continue to tune in. In 2011, “Jersey Shore” was the most-watched cable series on television, averaging 9.3 million viewers per episode. Each new episode of “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo” draws about a million viewers, and that number doesn’t count the number of people who watch (or re-watch) the reruns.

The laws of television programming -- if it rates, run it -- reign supreme. Until that kind of viewing trend changes, the genre probably isn’t going away.

But that doesn’t mean the makers of such programming are in a hurry to talk it up. Numerous reality TV producers and executives for the networks that run the shows were asked to comment about TODAY’s survey findings. Everyone declined.

We who watch might be as much to blame as the people who participate in the shows. David Frederick, professor of psychology at Chapman University and consultant on the TODAY survey, points out that “we are likely hardwired to seek out information on how other people deal with conflicts, family, friends and mating.”

“Reality TV provides one source of information regarding what makes some people more susceptible to being manipulated, what makes them more prestigious, and how to survive in dangerous situations,” Frederick said. “These shows appeal to a very basic human need for information about social relationships.”

Decades ago, the social relationships before us -- on television at least -- might have come from the family sitcom, but the days of “Leave it to Beaver” and even “Friends” are long behind us. For now, for better or worse, that torch has been passed.

So for the Kardashians, the various real housewives, and you, too, “Giuliana and Bill” -- you have our attention. Behave wisely.

Lindsay Lohan leaves the 10th precinct in New York after being arrested early Thursday morning.

The police source said Lohan made no comments to police when she was taken to the 10th precinct early Thursday except to ask for an attorney.

Her lawyer, Mark Heller, later said in a statement that his client "is a victim of someone trying to capture their 15 minutes of fame." He added that he is confident that Lohan would be exonerated.

The 26-year-old actress received a desk appearance ticket and left the station shortly before 8 a.m., wearing leggings, a miniskirt and a black jacket covering her head.

She got into a black SUV with another man and a driver and the car sped off. Calls to Lohan's publicist were not immediately returned. Her next court date was not known.

Hours later, Lohan was charged in California for a June crash in which her Porsche slammed into a dump truck. In that crash, the actress got into the wreck on her way to a movie set. She was taken to the hospital but returned to the set of the film, "Liz and Dick," hours later.

Lohan has run into numerous problems in New York in recent months. She was involved in a NYPD investigation in September after alleging a man had assaulted her in a New York hotel, but charges against the man were later dropped.

Also in September, the actress was accused of clipping a man with her car outside another Manhattan nightclub, but prosecutors chose not to move ahead with charges.

The woman wearing the fur coat was allegedly punched by Lindsay Lohan at a New York nightclub.

In October, police were called to her childhood home on Long Island after a report of fight between her and her mother. An investigation revealed "no criminality."

Lindsay Lohan: I was bullied in school

In May, she was cleared of allegations that she struck a Hollywood nightclub manager with her car.

Lohan remains on informal probation for taking a necklace from a jewelry store without permission last year. That means she doesn't have to check in with a judge or probation officer but could face a jail term if arrested again.

Her latest film, "Liz & Dick," in which she portrays screen icon Elizabeth Taylor, premiered on Lifetime on Sunday.

Lohan also recently filmed "The Canyons," an indie film written by "Less Than Zero" and "American Psycho" author Bret Easton Ellis.

  • Glenn Beck puts Obama figure in jar of 'pee pee'

Conservative media personality Glenn Beck's attempt to sell a project he called "Obama in Pee Pee" was thwarted by eBay Wednesday, but Beck then began taking bids via email instead.

    theblazeTV.com

Glenn Beck's Obama bobblehead floating in a jar of what he joked was "pee pee," but was reportedly only beer.

On Tuesday, Beck was discussing a controversial painting titled "The Truth," which shows President Barack Obama in a Christ-like pose wearing a crown of thorns.

Dressed as a parody of an artist, Beck pointed to a copy of the Constitution and said, "That document means I can't stop (the artist), and the spirit of that document is that I shouldn't try."

After painting clothing on replicas of some famous nudes, Beck then walked to a large jar of yellow liquid, calling it "my own specially brewed CountryTime, if you will."

Placing a bobblehead of a flag-draped Obama in the jar, Beck called the president the "savior of mankind" and announced, "this is when icon and art come together." He labeled the jar with a pricetag of $25,000.

"So whether you're offended by this one or by this one," he said, indicating the Obama jar and a framed copy of the painting showing Obama in the crucifixion pose, "Sucks to be you, doesn't it? Welcome to America."

He then said if the original project sold, he would make another one featuring "Michelle Obama and her little abs."

On Wednesday's show, Beck was given a letter from eBay, where bidding on the jar had topped $11,000. The letter said the auction had been removed because it contained "bodily waste." The liquid was revealed on Beck's website to be beer, not urine.

"But everybody on the left, they are so open and tolerant, and they just don't like it when people complain about taking the image of the savior and putting him in pee pee," Beck said. "But the savior Obama in pee pee? Oh no, that's just too much."

Beck said proceeds from the sale of the jar would go to his Mercury One charity.

  • Is Jessica Simpson pregnant again? Her rep won't comment

    Us Weekly

A representative for Jessica Simpson told TODAY.com that she won't be commenting on a report from Us Weekly which says the star is pregnant with her second child. Simpson gave birth to daughter Maxwell Drew just seven months ago.

The magazine cites an unnamed source in its cover story, saying that the pregnancy came as a surprise to the "Fashion Star" mentor and her fiance of two years, Eric Johnson. "It definitely wasn't planned. But yes, Jessica is pregnant again," the source says, noting that Simpson is "overjoyed."

Since Simpson's reps don't want to speak right now, it might be wise for interested parties to keep a close eye on the star's Twitter account, which is where she confirmed her first pregnancy. Simpson used the account recently to tweet a photo of her fiance and Maxwell, attaching a Thanksgiving message to her followers: "I am so grateful for my new lil family!"

The spotlight has been firmly affixed to Simpson since giving birth to Maxwell -- aside from this latest report, any and all news of her post-baby weight loss has been closely monitored. Simpson hasn't said exactly how much she gained while pregnant or exactly how much she's lost since she delivered her daughter in May, but she did speak out in September admitting that the weight doesn't come off easily. "I didn't realize it didn't all come off with the baby," Simpson told USA Today.

E! News meanwhile reached out to Weight Watchers on the baby No. 2 news. Simpson is a spokesperson for the company. "Any questions related to Jessica's personal life can only be answered by her team," Stephanie Schulman, public relations manager at Weight Watchers, told E!. • Forecast? Furry! Cat moseys through live weather report

The weather forecast? Partly furry with a chance of purring. Or that's what viewers of the Spanish-language channel Univision might have thought on Monday.

When meteorologist Eduardo Rodriguez was giving the weather report in the channel's Miami studio, the tip of a cat's tail suddenly became apparent in the picture. The white and grey tabby then found something interesting in the corner of the weather set, leaving it to strike a pose familiar to all cat owners, the "Look at my butt! Look, look at my butt!" move.

Offscreen, other Univision anchors cracked up at the sight of the uninvited visitor, but Rodriguez stayed professional and kept delivering the weather report. Later, however, he had fun with the incident on Twitter, tweeting that the cat had come to investigate whether it would continue to be cold.

Looks like the channel had a good attitude about the whole thing. Univision posted the video to YouTube with the note, "There are several cats that have turned the Univision parking lot into their home and sometimes they make it into the studio. This cat just walked right through the weatherman's report."

  • Melissa Rycroft and Tony Dovolani win 'Dancing With the Stars: All-Stars'

Updated 9:30 a.m. ET: "Dancing With the Stars" pro Tony Dovolani finally has his first mirror ball trophy! The hoofer and celeb partner Melissa Rycroft defeated Olympic gold medalist Shawn Johnson and "General Hospital" star Kelly Monaco on Tuesday to win the competition's first all-star season.

Adam Taylor / ABC via Reuters

Melissa Rycroft and pro partner Tony Dovolani hold the mirror ball trophy as they are crowned champions on the season finale of ABC's "Dancing with the Stars: All-Stars" in Los Angeles on Tuesday.

This is also Melissa's first mirror ball trophy. When she competed in season eight, she finished in third place, with Shawn as that season's champ. Melissa had kicked off the all-star season with a prediction that she wouldn't last past the fourth week, but as the season progressed, she continued to improve and win fan votes.

“My mind went blank for a minute,” Rycroft told reporters after the show as to what she was thinking when host Tom Bergeron called her name as the winner.

“When we were standing there with Shawn and Derek I assumed it’d be them. After I realized it was our names, I said, ‘Oh, my God! How did this just happen?’”

Rycroft's "Life Is a Highway" instant samba on finale night sealed her victory, which is based on the judges' scores and viewer votes. The judges -- who failed to call her out on two slips, but did note a flawed interpretation of the music -- gave her a score of 28.5 for the performance and praised her moves.

"You've been my greatest pleasure to watch," head judge Len Goodman said.

But no doubt, Melissa's likable pro played a sizable role in her victory. Tony has been a fan favorite with his patience, nice-guy attitude and positive demeanor. Of all the pros on the show, he has perhaps been paired with the most contestants who lacked the ballroom skills to go far (Kate Gosselin and Martina Navratilova, to name two), and was often eliminated early in the competition. And in his 14th season, he finally got his mirror ball.

"This has been a long time coming for Tony," Bergeron noted as the winners celebrated.

The victory was especially sweet for Dovolani and not just because he’d been arguably paired with some, ahem, shall we say “challenging” partners over the years.

“I’ve paid my dues,” Dovolani nodded. “But it was worth the entire 14 seasons to get somebody like Melissa. It was worth this unbelievable moment. All the stars have to align sometimes and tonight they did.”

The pro dancer had much to celebrate. “It’s my wife’s and my 13th (wedding) anniversary,” he shared. “Also, it’s been 100 years of independence for (my native) Albania. This is an incredible moment! I share this with all our fans.”

The couple had few expectations given that they started out competing against numerous past winners in terms of both stars and pros.

“We thought we’d go home in week one,” Dovolani exclaimed.

“We were going to try to hold our own and maybe leave with some sort of impression,” Rycroft mused. “We never thought we’d be champions or be the last ones standing. I wish we hadn’t underestimated ourselves but at the same time it makes us more proud of what we’ve accomplished.”

It was almost more of the pro's win than Melissa's. When the pair were announced as the newest champs, fellow pros Maks and Val Chmerkovskiy hoisted Tony onto their shoulders as the cameras zoomed in on him pumping his fists in the air, leaving Melissa out of the picture until pro Derek Hough finally got her up and back into the frame.

Though Tony and Melissa appeared poised to win after their two perfect scores on Monday, Shawn and Kelly gave them some tough competition in the insta-dance round.

The "General Hospital" actress nearly nailed her energetic jive with great twirls and kicks. The judges dinged them for a little lack of precision, and gave her and Val matching 9.5s for a two-night total of 87.5 out of 90. And when she was eliminated in third place, the actress gave big props to her partner.

"This guy is the most incredible man, and he's the most talented dancer out there," she said. "He taught somebody who has no idea how to stand on both of her feet and talk at the same time how to dance gracefully."

As for Shawn, she added one more perfect score to her ballroom history with the instant cha-cha-cha to finish in second place with a total of 87 points. Derek, who has hinted that this may very well be his last season on "Dancing," said after their final performance, "After doing the show for so long, you try to find new ways to make it special. (Shawn) made it more than special regardless of the result."

  • 'Two and a Half Men' star: 'I apologize if' remarks showed disrespect

    Cliff Lipson / CBS

Angus T. Jones as Jake Harper on "Two and a Half Men."

"Two and a Half Men" star Angus T. Jones has issued a statement after slamming the hit sitcom he's starred on since it premiered in 2003. On Monday, a video featuring the 19-year-old urging fans to "stop watching (the show) and filling your head with filth" went viral. The actor had remained silent on this latest controversy surrounding the show until Tuesday evening.

In a statement sent to TODAY.com, the actor makes clear his feelings for the cast and crew he has been working with. "Without qualification, I am grateful to and have the highest regard and respect for all of the wonderful people on 'Two and a Half Men' with whom I have worked over the past ten years, and who have become an extension of my family," Jones said.

    Here is his complete statement:

I have been the subject of much discussion, speculation and commentary over the past 24 hours. While I cannot address everything that has been said or right every misstatement or misunderstanding, there is one thing I want to make clear.

Without qualification, I am grateful to and have the highest regard and respect for all of the wonderful people on Two and Half Men with whom I have worked over the past ten years and who have become an extension of my family.

Chuck Lorre, Peter Roth and many others at Warner Bros. and CBS are responsible for what has been one of the most significant experiences in my life to date.  I thank them for the opportunity they have given and continue to give me and the help and guidance I have and expect to continue to receive from them.

I also want all of the crew and cast on our show to know how much I personally care for them and appreciate their support, guidance and love over the years.  I grew up around them and know that the time they spent with me was in many instances more than with their own families.  I learned life lessons from so many of them and will never forget how much positive impact they have had on my life.

I apologize if my remarks reflect me showing indifference to and disrespect of my colleagues and a lack of appreciation of the extraordinary opportunity of which I have been blessed.  I never intended that.

According to E! Online, production on "Men" continued as usual this week, though Jones was not present. His character, Jake Harper, is in the Army, and appears while on leave from the base.

"Two and a Half Men" airs Thursdays at 8:30 p.m. on CBS.

  • Brad Pitt calls spoof of his Chanel ad 'fair play'

Brad Pitt at a screening of the film "Killing Them Softly" in New York on Monday, Nov. 26.

Brad Pitt might have raised a few eyebrows -- and been the butt of a few jokes -- with his Chanel No. 5 ad, but the actor is standing by the spots.

Access Hollywood’s Michelle Beadle sat down with the actor at the junket for his latest movie, “Killing Them Softly,” where he spoke candidly about the perfume campaign.

“I’ve been overseas, so I’ve been blissfully protected,” the 48-year-old actor said when asked about people’s reactions.

“I haven’t [seen the parodies], but I say absolutely fair play, fair play,” Brad continued.

Despite the ad’s random and off-the-wall feel, the actor told Access he enjoyed the final product.

“I kind of liked it ... I respect what they do,” he said of the fashion house. “They do some really quality things.”

Brad might be proud of his Chanel ad, but when asked if he could identify the scent on the street, the actor was less confident.

For his latest role, Brad had to do something he put behind him -- smoking -- something he’s quit and started doing again and again.

"[I’ve quit] several times, I’m really good at it," he said about lighting up again for the role where he plays an enforcer in the Andrew Dominik-directed movie, which Brad also produced.

“It’s great, it’s great,” he said of having to smoke in the movie. “But you have to know that you’re going to have to quit on the other end and that that ugly day is coming, so you over enjoy it I guess.”

The actor was glad to leave the habit on the big screen.

“I very conscious of health now and I want to be around for my kids, I don’t have that drive anymore,” he said. “I don’t crave it all.”

“Killing Them Softly” hits theaters on Nov. 30, 2012.

  • 'Silver Linings Playbook,' 'Moonrise Kingdom' lead Spirit Award nominees

Hollywood is literally getting into the Spirit of the awards season. The nominations for the 2013 Independent Spirit Awards were announced Tuesday, and "Silver Linings Playbook" and "Moonrise Kingdom" lead all hopefuls with five nods apiece.

In what essentially amounted to a major sweep, "Silver Linings" nabbed nods in all five major categories: Best Feature, Best Actor (Bradley Cooper), Best Actress (Jennifer Lawrence), Best Director (David O. Russell) and Best Screenplay.

Oscar-buzz cheat sheet: Life of Pi and Silver Linings Playbook neck and neck?

It'll be going up for Best Feature against "Moonrise Kingdom," "Beasts of the Southern Wild," "Bernie" and "Keep the Lights On."

The nominations also included a slew of other boldface names: Rashida Jones scored a screenplay nomination (along with cowriter Will McCormack) for "Celeste and Jesse Forever"; Helen Hunt is in the race for Best Supporting Female for her revealing performance in "The Sessions"; and Bruce Willis nabbed a Best Supporting Male nom for "Moonrise Kingdom."

One pleasant surprise? Willis will be going mano a mano with "Magic Mike's" Matthew McConaughey in that category. Guess the stripper bonanza wasn't all about beefcake pecs!

Oscar-buzz cheat sheet: Lincoln wins in a landslide?!

The Spirit Awards are often considered a hipper, more buttoned-down antidote to the Oscars, with stars showing up barefoot and kicking back at a seaside tent along Santa Monica beach the day before the more glammed-up Academy Awards.

Although the Spirit's winners often tend to skew art house and diverge from the year's big Oscar victors, last year's crop was uncharacteristically in sync with the Academy's picks: Eventual Oscar champ "The Artist" also nabbed Spirit wins for Best Picture and Best Director.

  • Were our parents nuts? Johansson not only one scarred by inappropriate movies as a kid

    Paramount Pictures

Scarlett Johansson saw "Psycho" way too early. She's not the only adult who remains scarred by scary movies seen as kids.

Scarlett Johansson is starring in the new movie "Hitchcock." and confessed on TODAY that she watched the great director's "Psycho" at a far-too-early age -- 7.

"I was raised on Hitchcock films," she said on the show. "My mother is a huge film buff and I saw 'Psycho' probably when I was too young, I mean I was like 7 or 8 and it was incredibly traumatizing. ... It petrified me."

Turns out Johansson is far from alone. Members of our staff were quick to share their own experiences with too-early scares. Seems that you never forget the title of your first cinematic chill.

Not every movie was meant to scare the youngster in question. "I remember my dad showing me 'Swamp Thing,'" confessed TODAY Moms editor Rebecca Dube. "He thought it was funny but my 8-year-old self did not appreciate the camp hilarity and found it to be PURE HORROR. Nightmares for months...."

    Warner Bros.

"Mine was 'The Deep' when I was 9 and OMG HE IS DRAWING ON HER STOMACH IN BLOOD WITH A CHICKEN FOOT but I’m sure it didn’t affect me at all," said Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, movies editor.

"My best friend saw the scary movie ‘It's Alive’ when we were around 10 and wouldn’t sleep in her room alone for 6 months," shared senior multimedia editor Mish Whalen.

Some inappropriate films weren't horror, but were still too adult for the child in question. "I saw 'Raging Bull' pretty young," said entertainment editor Kurt Schlosser. "Take that for what it’s (expletive) worth."

  • Ex-Elmo puppeteer faces new allegation of sex with minor

    Lucas Jackson / Reuters file

Kevin Clash with Elmo in New York in 2010.

Updated 4:15 p.m. ET: NEW YORK -- The puppeteer formerly behind the "Sesame Street" character Elmo faces a new accusation of having sex with an underage boy, a week after a similar allegation prompted him to resign from the iconic public television children's program.

In a lawsuit filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Manhattan, a man identified only as John alleges Kevin Clash engaged in oral sex and other sex acts with him when John was 16 years old. The suit seeks at least $75,000 in damages.

The suit alleges the incident occurred in either 2000 or 2001 when John, who is from Florida, visited New York for modeling opportunities. John came to know Clash, then 40, through a telephone chat line for gays on which Clash claimed to be a 30-year-old named Craig, according to the suit.

John returned to New York when he turned 18, and he and Clash renewed the relationship, the lawsuit said.

"Mr. Clash believes the lawsuit has no merit," Clash's publicist, Risa B. Heller, said in an emailed statement.

Jeff Herman, an attorney for the accuser, read a statement on behalf of his client during a news conference in New York on Tuesday, saying, "I’m only coming forward as support for the two victims that were accused as liars. I too at first thought it was a money thing, and wanted to stay silent. But Cecil (Singleton’s) story reflects me, and deserves validation. Just say sorry so we can all move on with our lives. I pray that Kevin seeks help, because under these sexual demons is an incredible man.

Herman also read from a chapter in a manuscript penned by his client and being made public for the first time. The chapter, titled “Tickled my heart,” describes the early days of the relationship the accuser alleges to have had with Clash. "When we first met I was 16 and there was no intercourse; however lots of heavy kissing ...” he wrote.

Herman said that Clash and his client also had an "adult" relationship after the client turned 18. That relationship lasted "about a year," according to Herman.

This is the latest charge levied against Clash, now 52, who resigned on Nov. 20 from Sesame Workshop, the company behind "Sesame Street," after nearly 30 years on the show.

Clash's resignation came the same day Cecil Singleton filed a claim seeking more than $5 million in damages from Clash. Singleton claims he met the then-32-year-old puppeteer in 1993 in a gay chat room when he was 15.

The claim added that on numerous occasions over a period of years Clash engaged in sexual activity with Singleton.

The newest allegation comes about two weeks after an initial accuser, 24-year-old Sheldon Stephens, recanted his claims that Clash had sex with him when he was 16 years old. Stephens later said the relationship was consensual.

Clash had denied the allegations and acknowledged a past relationship with Stephens. He added the pair were both consenting adults at the time.

Sesame Workshop said in a statement Tuesday that it learned of the first accusation in June of this year. "Based on our own internal investigation, the use of outside investigative firms, and Kevin’s vehement denial, we found no evidence of an underage relationship. We did not know about subsequent accusations until we read about them in the press. We trust the judicial process to reach the ultimate conclusions about the truth or falsity of these allegations."

The Elmo character debuted on "Sesame Street" in 1979, 10 years after the show premiered and introduced the now-iconic characters Big Bird, Bert and Ernie, Oscar the Grouch and Cookie Monster, among others, to American children.

While Clash was the third performer to animate the child-like shaggy red monster, Sesame Workshop credits him with turning Elmo into the international sensation he became.

TODAY staff contributed to this report from Reuters.

  • From tiger blood and trolls to filth, 'Two and a Half Men' well-acquainted with scandal

    Mitchell Haddad / CBS

A 2003 photo from "Two and a Half Men."

For the first six-plus years of its run, the biggest headlines surrounding "Two and a Half Men," had to do with the show's runaway ratings. Since it premiered in 2003, the CBS comedy has consistently ranked among the most-viewed in all of television. This season alone, the show has averaged approximately 13 million viewers per episode, according to Nielsen ratings. . It would now be fair to say that a good portion of those viewers are also familiar with the show's teen star Angus T. Jones and his plea for viewers to "stop watching" the show he's deemed to be "filth."

But this is far from the first scandal surrounding the show or those who make it, including former lead Charlie Sheen and "Men" creator Chuck Lorre. Remember these?

    2009: Charlie Sheen & Brooke Mueller's Christmas 911 call
Sheen's then-wife Brooke Mueller placed a 911 call alleging she'd been the victim of domestic violence. "My husband had me with a knife. I was scared for my life and he threatened me," she said in the recording. Sheen was arrested on domestic violence charges; ultimately, Sheen worked out a plea deal when the case went to court, and was sentenced to rehab, probation, and domestic violence counseling.

2010: Sheen allegedly trashes Plaza Hotel room
Although he'd later call allegations that he flew into an intoxicated rage at New York's Plaza Hotel while vacationing with his family "overblown," the incident was a catalyst for the escalating troubles surrounding the actor -- and the show.

2011: 'Two and a Half Men' shuts down production early
CBS finally halts production weeks ahead of schedule, citing "the totality of Charlie Sheen's statements, conduct and condition."

2011: Lorre's vanity card slams Sheen
In one of Lorre's show-ending vanity cards, the "Men" creator finally got some thoughts off his chest. In a thinly veiled slam of Sheen, he wrote, "I exercise regularly. I eat moderate amounts of healthy food. I make sure to get plenty of rest. I see my doctor once a year and my dentist twice a year. I floss every night. I've had chest x-rays, cardio stress tests, EKG's and colonoscopies. I see a psychologist and have a variety of hobbies to reduce stress. I don't drink. I don't smoke. I don't do drugs. I don't have crazy, reckless sex with strangers. If Charlie Sheen outlives me, I'm gonna be really pissed."

2011: Sheen, 'winning,' speaks of 'tiger blood,' Adonis DNA, the 'Sober Valley Lodge'
No one can explain this one better than Sheen himself. Watch the original interview from TODAY.

    2011: Sheen fired from 'Men'
Just weeks after the season's premature end, Warner Bros. Television announced March 7 that "after careful consideration," it had "terminated Charlie Sheen's services on 'Two and a Half Men' effective immediately."

2011: Sheen turns on co-star, calls him ‘troll’
In another chapter from the ‘don’t cross Charlie Sheen’ book, the actor accused his former costar Jon Cryer of being a ‘turncoat” and a “troll.”  "Like I said: You're with me, or you're with the trolls," Sheen told E! News March 8. "Obviously he's with the trolls." Cryer took it in stride, joking on “Conan,” “I’ve had to hide the fact that I’m a troll.”

2011: Demi Moore, Ashton Kutcher split
The show's new leading man, Ashton Kutcher, was tabloid fodder for months amid rumors that he'd been cheating on wife Demi Moore. On Nov. 17, the two officially split. "It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I have decided to end my six-year marriage to Ashton," Moore said in a statement.

    2012: Show co-creator disses women
In March 2012, "Men" co-creator Lee Aronsohn didn't exactly endear himself to female viewers by announcing that women "make men damaged" and that he wasn't a fan of women-centric shows, saying, "Enough, ladies, I get it. You have periods." He later apologized via Twitter.

  • 'Killing Them Softly' delivers bullets and Brad Pitt with style and attitude

Melinda Sue Gordon / The Weinstein Company

Brad Pitt in "Killing Them Softly."

REVIEW: A juicy, bloody, grimy and profane crime drama that amply satisfies as a deep-dish genre piece, "Killing Them Softly" rather insistently also wants to be something more.

Writer-director Andrew Dominik, whose extraordinary Western "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford" proved too long and arty for the masses, repositions George V. Higgins’ 1974 Boston mob-world novel as a metaphor for the ills of American capitalism circa 2008, a neatly provocative tactic. But he also shamelessly shows off his directorial acumen; unlike the leading character, who’s all business, Dominik makes sure you notice all his moves. Tight, absorbing and entertainingly performed by a virtually all-male cast topped by Brad Pitt, this Weinstein Co. release should generate solid mid-level business this fall.

PHOTOS: Cannes 2012: Competition lineup features "Cosmopolis," "Moonrise Kingdom," "Killing Them Softly"

A lawyer, professor and assistant U.S. Attorney who long investigated organized crime in addition to writing 27 novels, Higgins knew well of what he wrote. His first novel, "The Friends of Eddie Coyle," was made into a fine film and his third, "Cogan’s Trade,"  the basis of this one, consists of torrents of exceptionally vivid Beantown wiseguy dialogue with bits of plot tucked almost incidentally into the chatter.

Moving the action to decimated post-Katrina New Orleans without a tourist in sight, Dominik has done a keen, disciplined job of coaxing the plot out of the shadows while retaining the flavor of underclass lingo and attitude. With the background dominated by then-presidential candidate Barack Obama’s optimistic speeches stressing the availability of “the American promise” to all, some bottom-feeding criminals plot what looks like a no-risk scheme: Old-timer Johnny Amato (Vincent Curatola, the great Johnny Sack of "The Sopranos") hires unwashed kids Frankie (Scoot McNairy) and Russell (Ben Mendelsohn) to raid the regular card night run by Markie Trattman (Ray Liotta), who once robbed his own game and got away with it.

PHOTOS: Outtakes from Brad Pitt's THR cover shoot

While allowing these low-enders to emerge in all their miserable glory, Dominik also adds his own flourishes right from the outset, from striking lateral camera moves to amusingly supplying one of the young hoods with a pathetic little dog. Despite their general ineptitude, the boys pull off the job, but this is bad news for Markie, as it’s going to be assumed he’s run the same scam a second time.

At least this is what is suspected by the unnamed and unseen corporate mob, which has cog-in-the-system “Driver” (Richard Jenkins) engage shrewd hit man Jackie Cogan (Pitt) to deal with this disruption of business as usual. Needlessly, Markie gets horribly beat up, Cogan brings in another hired killer, Mickey (James Gandolfini) to help him with a double-killing, and plenty more blood gets spilled before order is, after a fashion, restored.

Although the plot bases are dutifully, if briefly, covered, this is a crime story like so many others in which it doesn’t really matter if you can follow who everyone is and why awful things are happening to them; it’s basically a given that everyone on view is guilty of something, so you can’t feel too badly when they come to grisly ends.

PHOTOS: Cannes Film Festival: Veterans ready to return to the Croisette

What matter more are style and attitude, which Dominik ladles on like sauce on ribs. Russell’s drug-addled disorientation is represented by multiple distortions of time, visual perception and sound; the pursuit of one victim is imaginatively covered entirely from the outside of the building in which the chase is consummated; Cogan arrives on the scene to the accompaniment of Johnny Cash’s “The Man Comes Around”; the just-scraping-by 21st century hoods drive late-‘60s/early-‘70s cars like a Riviera and Toronado; and one man’s execution is rendered from many angles in a slow-motion explosion of breaking glass and penetrating bullets so elaborate and prolonged that it resembles a self-standing art installation.

In a related way, some of the dialogue scenes, especially a couple of near-monologues superbly delivered by Gandolfini as a booze-guzzling, sex-obsessed, past-his-prime hit man, almost have the feel of brilliant, free-standing acting class scenes; they serve the film’s purposes, to be sure, but there’s a self-consciously showy aspect to them that makes you easily imagine students using them as audition pieces.

The film is terribly smart in every respect, with ne’er-a-false note performances and superb craft work from top to bottom, but it never lets you forget it, from Pitt’s pithy excoriation of Thomas Jefferson’s hypocrisy right down to his “Crime is the business of America” final line that is bound to be widely quoted.

The film noir crime dramas of the late 1940s and early 1950s were about a palpable unease in the country, but this remained a subtext rather than the overt subject of the films. Here, Dominik explicitly articulates his intended meanings, which have to do with money, institutional rot and what happens when you don’t keep your economic house in order. Either approach is valid but, perhaps in this day and age, audiences need their messages to be quick and direct. "Killing Them Softly" delivers them that way.

Critics of Jones were quick to point out that he said nothing about forgoing his $350,000-per-episode paychecks or returning money he's previously earned on the show he now condemns.

We couldn't stop thinking about a $350,000-per-episode paycheck -- reportedly the highest earned by any child actor on TV -- and some of the things that could actually translate into in the real world. "It's likely the studio didn't know what he was going to be saying." Dahlgren told Lauer.

On TODAY's Take 3, show anchors and comedian Finesse Mitchell discussed the issue, and Jones' $8 million annual salary.

"I'm a God-fearing man, and God is speaking to me right now, he's saying, 'I'll take his job!'" joked Mitchell. "And they can change the name to 'Two Men and a Brother.' I will take that job, I have no problem, I'll show up early with coffee and donuts!"

"Killing Them Softly" star Brad Pitt continues to kill folks with kindness. The always-generous actor, who was filming his upcoming film "World War Z" in London on Thanksgiving, donated $1,100 to Southhampton Hospital's neonatal unit in Dorset, England.

According to the BBC, Pitt made the on-the-spot donation when Tricia Wilson-Hughes, a fundraiser who was collecting money from the movie's film crew on behalf of the medical facility, approached Pitt's security guard to see if Angelina Jolie's other half might be willing to pitch in a few bucks.
