  • Divorce discussion brings Christie Brinkley to tears: 'I just want peace'

Four years of fighting with your ex can take a toll on anyone, and while 58-year-old Christie Brinkley looks pretty terrific, she's also worn out from her ongoing legal battles with her ex, Peter Cook. She sat down with TODAY's Matt Lauer Tuesday in the hopes of talking both divorce and her return next week to Broadway's "Chicago," but ... but things didn't turn out quite as planned.

Instead, they started out and continued talking almost exclusively about Brinkley vs. Cook, with Brinkley tearing up and choking on her words.

"I have turned the other cheek," she said, adding that her former spouse of 12 years has repeatedly taken to the airwaves to air their dirty laundry. "There's not one quote from me, anywhere. This is the first time I've ever been on a show (to talk about the split)."

She revealed that Cook pays $600 per month for each of their children, though he has been quoted as saying he pays "double" what's required by courts. "It's a very minimal amount of money," she said. "And it wasn't (about) the money. I have hesitated to do anything with the court because he actually likes the publicity and he likes going to court."

While Cook has called Brinkley a "narcissistic egomaniac," Brinkley seems to feel much the same way about him: "I have never taken part in name calling. The only thing I've ever said ... at the end of that (second) trial I said as a public service, 'Google "divorcing a narcissist."' ... I'm not alone. I've gotten hundreds of letters from women that are going through this. It's not easy."

Lauer was concerned about the impact all of this back-and-forth between the parents was having on their teenaged children; Brinkley returned that there should be "legislation that protects families from a spouse who has been diagnosed by the court-appointed forensic psychiatrist as a  bona fide malignant or extreme narcissist.... This is something the courts need to come to grips with."

But as time wound down, and there was little chat of "Chicago," Brinkley lost her own grip. While telling Lauer she has not been in touch with Cook for two years, though "he continues to contact me," she said she asked a judge to "please make this stop, protect my right to peace. I just want peace for my family."

Tears welling in her eyes, Brinkley said, "I just want peace. And every time I have any joy or any kind of success in anything, he has to try to destroy it."

  • No lovefest on 'Dancing With the Stars' as judges go after Melissa and Maks -- again

How could "Dancing With the Stars" get any better?

    ABC

Melissa Gilbert has a good cry while rehearsing with pro Maks on "Dancing."

The judges deemed last week's season premiere the series' "best ever" after two contestants — Welsh opera singer Katherine Jenkins and a positively dashing Jaleel White — scored 9s, only six points separated first place from last and the rock-bottom score was a respectable 20.

    Remember Kate Gosselin getting 14?

Anyway, did the stars — one of whom will go home tomorrow — start buckling under the pressure tonight?

Well, it certainly wasn't the lovefest that last week was.

More from E! 5 things 'DWTS' could learn from 'Walking Dead'

Katherine threw her opera-singing, lunching-with-the-queen image of demureness out the window with a jive sexy enough to be declared not Len Goodman's "cup of tea." So, obviously, Bruno Tonioli loved it and he and Carrie Ann Inaba bestowed a pair of 9s on the leggy blonde.

But they weren't the first 9s of the night — Disney prince Roshon Fegan kicked things off with a quickstep that showed he can do elegant just as well as he brings in the funk.

Joining the upper tier of contestants once again was Bruno's favorite amateur dancer, ever, William Levy — who was just as adorable doing the quickstep as he was sexy doing the cha-cha.

Jaleel, unfortunately, didn't bring as much bounce to his jive as we expected from the out-of-the-gate fave, and his score suffered. "The Family Matters" star, who pointed out that knocking into doors without getting hurt isn't as easy as it looks, took the biggest dive, score-wise, going from a 26 to a 22.

More from E! Was the 'DWTS' premiere the best first show ever?

Maria Menounos headed in the opposite direction, impressing with her quickstep enough for a four-point jump, from 21 to 25.

Sherri Shepherd worried she wouldn't be able to handle the jive — but she had more bounce than Jaleel! She turned in just as giddy a performance as she did last week, and she once again scored a 23.

But the real surprise came when Len apologized to Donald Driver for "undermarking" him last week. Personally, we kinda think they all undermarked him this week, too, but at least he got a nice bump after a sharp quickstep.

Gavin DeGraw also did way better, energy-wise, than last week indicated he was capable of, but it was a little too sloppy for the judges' taste.

More from E! Who is Sherri apologizing to at 'DWTS'?

Meanwhile, we're starting to wonder if Melissa Gilbert is being overjudged because she's partnered with the headstrong, itching-to-win Maksim Chmerkovskiy. Last week's cha-cha was very ambitious, and the "Little House on the Prairie" star seemingly rose to the occasion, but she only got a 20.

And she only got 20 this week after a seemingly more-than-competent quickstep! Does she actually stink and we're not seeing it, or are the judges paying extra-special attention to every move they make?

Lucky for Melissa, Martina Navratilova's jive was a bit of a mess. She's fit, she's strong, she looked good — but she had no attack.

"Aw, that was sad!" Carrie Ann squealed. "Oh, my darling, I think that serve went into the net," lamented Bruno.

More from E! Which 'DWTS' hunk posed naked?

Here's how Monday's leaderboard stacked up, combined with last week's scores:

    • Katherine Jenkins & Mark Ballas: 26 (52)
    • Roshon Fegan & Chelsie Hightower: 26 (49)
    • William Levy & Cheryl Burke: 25 (49)
    • Jaleel White & Kym Johnson: 22 (48)
    • Maria Menounos & Derek Hough: 25 (46)
    • Sherri Shepherd & Val Chmerkovskiy: 23 (46)
    • Donald Driver & Peta Murgatroyd: 24 (45)
    • Jack Wagner & Anna Trebunskaya: 21 (44)
    • Gladys Knight & Tristan MacManus: 19 (42)
    • Gavin DeGraw & Karina Smirnoff: 21 (41)
    • Melissa Gilbert & Maks Chmerkovskiy: 20 (40)
    • Martina Navratilova & Tony Dovolani: 17 (37)

After two nights of nothing-but-dance, someone will finally be eliminated Tuesday night.

Do you think Melissa was scored fairly this week? Who do you predict is going to be the first celeb eliminated? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page! And don't forget to join us for a chat at 3:30 ET Tuesday, March 27, to dish on who you voted for, who'll make it to the end and more!

  • Sneak peek: Nimoy reminds Sheldon of his human half on 'Big Bang'

    Monty Brinton / CBS

"Big Bang Theory" star Jim Parsons, left, and guest star Leonard Nimoy of "Star Trek" fame.

"The Big Bang Theory" features its most logical guest star Thursday when the CBS comedy welcomes Leonard Nimoy.

During the episode, the icon voices a Spock action figure that Leonard (Johnny Galecki) gifts to his roommate and encourages the highly illogical Sheldon (Jim Parsons) to embrace his "human" form and play with a valuable mint-in-box Star Trek transporter toy.

Photos from THR: 'Big Bang Theory' lives long, prospers with Leonard Nimoy

But what could persuade the anal retentive collector in Sheldon to open the box and destroy the toy's value? In a clip from Thursday's "The Transporter Malfunction" episode exclusive to The Hollywood Reporter, Nimoy's "little Spock" uses logic and reason to help convince Sheldon to live a little using phrases like "illogical" and "fascinating."

"I thoroughly enjoyed myself," the "Star Trek" legend told The Hollywood Reporter of his experience filming the episode. "[They're] a talented company and a smart show; they made me welcome."

Photos from THR: 'Big Bang Theory' celebrates 100 episodes

Co-creator Chuck Lorre told THR at "Big Bang's 100th episode party last year that the episode in which Penny (Kaley Cuoco) gives Sheldon a Nimoy-signed napkin -- complete with his DNA -- stands as his favorite "nerd moment" on the long-running series.

“[Sheldon] was so overcome with affection for her, he physically hugged her, which he can’t do as a character," he said at the time. "We all stood there on the stage and everybody got all fablungent and weepy. It was a moment that rose above the show and became something else.”

Check out the clip to see just who says "Set phasers to dumb."

"The Big Bang Theory" airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. on CBS.

  • Some 'Hunger Games' fans upset that character of Rue is black

    Lionsgate Film

Amandla Stenberg plays Rue in "The Hunger Games."

Even though the character of Rue in Suzanne Collins' book "The Hunger Games" is described as having "dark brown skin and eyes," many moviegoers were surprised -- some negatively -- that a young black actress played the role in the film.

(Spoiler alert: Details of the plot of "The Hunger Games" revealed ahead.)

In an article headlined "Racist Hunger Games Fans Are Very Disappointed," the blog Jezebel pointed out that a Tumblr site called Hunger Games Tweets has been collecting tweets reacting to the casting.

Amandla Stenberg, 13, plays Rue, a 12-year-old tribute from District 11 who fights alongside heroine Katniss Everdeen in the movie's murderous tournament. According to Wikipedia, Stenberg's mother is African-American and her father Danish. She also appeared in the 2011 film "Colombiana."

While some of the comments are mere surprise, others are more opinionated. "Why does rue have to be black not gonna lie kinda ruined the movie," wrote one moviegoer on Twitter. Wrote another, "Kk call me racist but when I found out Rue was black her death wasnt as sad #ihatemyself."

Both of those accounts appear to have been deleted from Twitter since Jezebel called out the posts, but numerous other posts quoted on Hunger Games Tweets offer up similiar thoughts.

Some tweets also referenced other "Hunger Games" characters played by black actors, including Rue's fellow District 11 tribute, Thresh, and the "Games" stylist Cinna, played by musician Lenny Kravitz.

Rue's skin color should hardly have been a secret. In addition to being spelled out in the book, Stenberg and Kravitz were among those pictured in individual character posters released back in October.

As the Jezebel article and the Tumblr link spread, a backlash against the racist sentiments appeared on Twitter.

Wrote Michelle Juett, "People disgust me. Rue was great, whatever race you thought she was supposed to be."

And Andria Nicole tweeted, "Heads up: if discovering Rue is black 'ruins' the Hunger Games movie for you, you have a lot bigger issues to worry about than casting."

And by Monday afternoon, the author of Hunger Games Tweets had seen some change, posting the message, "The number of Tweets complaining about Rue & Thresh have been greatly reduced and it's all thanks to you guys."

Brown was pulled over for talking on his cell phone, but officers gave him a field sobriety test, according to Officer Mike Harris of the California Highway Patrol.

The New Edition singer allegedly failed the sobriety test and was taken to the Van Nuys jail where he was charged and booked for suspicion of DUI.

  • Rihanna-themed 'black and bleu' sandwich not funny to restaurant patrons

    Lucas Jackson / Reuters file

Rihanna and Chris Brown in 2008.

Jokes about domestic abuse seldom find a receptive audience, as one Georgia restaurant found out.

Chops & Hops, a steakhouse in Watkinsville, Ga., posted a photo on its Facebook and Twitter pages March 23 of a blue cheese-smothered steak entree, with the caption, "@chrisbrown, @rihanna and us teamed up for a  award winning celebrity sandwich. Put your hands on this caribbean black and bleu sandwich."

The pun didn’t stop there, as the post went on to remark, “Chris Brown won't beat you up for eating this unless your name starts with a R and ends with A."

The eatery’s joke references the 2009 physical spat between Brown and Rihanna, in which Brown attacked his pop star girlfriend and later pled guilty to assault. Images of Rihanna’s bruised and bloodied face then spread across the Internet.

“Cannot believe you find this appropriate,” wrote Nancy Downend Ferguson in reply to the Facebook entry. “Was a loyal customer. Will never come back.”

“Celebrity sandwiches are a fine idea, but it's one thing to mock a celebrity or make up something clever about them for a sandwich but this was on poor, poor taste,” says Leslie Boby-Sabatinelli.

Mychell Lang, a representative of the restaurant, issued an apology on Facebook on Satuday, writing, “The owners of C&H would like to make sure everyone knows that we and our staff DO NOT SUPPORT DOMESTIC VIOLENCE. Many of us have been affected by domestic violence in some manner and realize that this is no joke. We have been involved in fundraising for Project Safe Team 6 and we fully intend on donating proceeds (times 6 -- in honor of Team 6) from the sales of the burger. C&H continues to strive for a community driven, family oriented, great food and great service environment. We will continue to be involved in our community fundraising and charities near and dear to our hearts.”

“OK ... let it go and move forward!” wrote Kelli-David Chase on Facebook. “Was it in poor taste? YES!! But they've apologized and are making amends by donating proceeds. Have YOU never made a mistake in life that you regretted? And are you still being reminded about it? Seriously!”

“I'm astounded by how much a restaurant is being [chastised] over something as silly as this,” says Todd Sturtz. “I mean Jay Leno, Conan O'Brien, Jimmy Kimmel, etc, make non-P.C. joking comments and references JUST like this FOR A LIVING, and millions of people continue to tune in to their shows and pay hard earned $ just to hear them. Chops & Hops didn't call the sandwich the "Domestic Violence is Awesome" Burger, they just made fun of some jerk BECAUSE he did something awful, using their art medium -- food. Wake up and smell the ground beef, people.”

Counters LaWanza Christina, “If this company were really sorry about their comments, they'd have deleted the post, or at the very least gone in and edited the description. But since NEITHER has happened, they are fine with using domestic violence as a selling point. Either way, even if I knew where this place was, I wouldn't patronize it.”

  • Will source of Whitney Houston's cocaine be revealed?

    Joel Saget / AFP/Getty Images

    Whitney Houston in 1999.

After last week's report that singer Whitney Houston used cocaine shortly before her Feb. 11 death, many fans are wondering about how the drugs were acquired and whether signs of the drug was hidden from police and other first responders.

"(Houston's case) is still an open investigation for us," Beverly Hills Police Lt. Mark Rosen told People Magazine when asked if cocaine was found in the singer's room at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif. "I can’t disclose any details about the investigation."

Police previously had confirmed that prescription medication bottles were found in Houston's room, but illegal drugs were never mentioned.

The L.A. Times reports that the Los Angeles coroner's office has listed the singer's cause of death as an accident, and plans to close their report once the full autopsy report has been released in two weeks.

Now singer Ray J, who reportedly dated Houston, denied a televised claim made by the singer's former sister-in-law, Bobby Brown's sister Leolah Brown, saying that he provided Houston with drugs.

Brown told Dr. Drew Pinsky on "Dr. Drew"on Friday that she saw Ray J leaving Houston's hotel room in a hurry on the night of the singer's death. She also referred to him as a "runner boy," meaning he bought cocain and supplied it to Houston.

Ray J was quick to deny the charges, and Pinsky's show seems to want to distance itself from Brown's remarks.

Ray J's statement read, in part, "Even though Leolah Brown was nowhere near the Beverly Hilton Hotel on the day Whitney Houston died, CNN proceeded to broadcast an interview with Ms. Brown in which she falsely claimed that Ray J was at the hotel and contributed to Whitney Houston's death."

In a statement on HLNTV.com, Pinsky reiterated that he had "immediately noted that we could not verify the accuracy of (Brown's) claims" and said that the interview had not re-aired.

  • Mad Maks? No, the 'Dancing With the Stars' pro 'knows the score'

    Adam Taylor / ABC

"Dancing" pro Maks kept calm as the judges nitpicked his partner Melissa Gilbert's first performance on March 19.

As many "Dancing With the Stars" fans -- including yours truly -- noticed last Monday night, hoofer hopeful Melissa Gilbert endured unusually tough criticism and low scores after putting on a strong first dance of the season. And that hardly seemed like random ballroom happenstance, given that her partner is Maksim Chmerkovskiy -- aka the easy-on-the-eyes pro who's had anything but easy relations with the judges over the past few seasons.

So, if the early bout of nitpicking and questionable scores came across as unfair to some outsiders, then surely the man sometimes referred to as ballroom's bad boy was mad about it. Right?

    Wrong.

"He wasn't that angry -- at least not visibly," a show insider revealed to TODAY.com. "(Maks) kept his cool. He just shrugged it off and said, 'It is what it is.' He understands how the judges regard him. He knows the score."

The score, according to the source, is that while the judges consider themselves impartial, Maks, and his partner du jour, might just have a harder time pleasing them than a seemingly preferred pro such as Derek Hough or Kym Johnson. After all, past problems aren't so easy to forget.

"Carrie Ann (Inaba) was genuinely offended by some of his comments -- on and off the show-- last season. But in (Maks') defense, he was offended by her comments (about partner Hope Solo's performances), too. And (Len) Goodman has had his own issues with him," the insider told us.

As for judge Bruno Tonioli, he's said to be a "bit more neutral."

Well, there's that. But what about the powers-that-be-behind the scenes? Do the producers have a problem with the pro?

"No," the insider insisted. "They love what he brings to the show."

Of course, despite Maks' comments last season, in which he declared that it was his show -- not that he meant it that way -- there are others on the dance floor this season -- like the stars. And so far, according to the source, they seem to be a friendly, scandal-free bunch.

"It's a good group of people" the show source told us. "Everyone likes each other. No scandals, no problems. ... I think the press tried to stir up a scandal about Sherri (Shepherd), saying she cheated, but I've seen no signs on anyone actually taking stock in that talk."

Are you looking forward to a drama-free season, or do you think Maks -- or maybe someone else -- will add some unchoreographed excitement to the show? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.

  • Kim Kardashian may press charges over flour incident

    Frazer Harrison / Getty Images

A post-flour-bomb, cleaned-up Kim Kardashian rejoins the red carpet.

Talk about Kim Kardashian dusting herself off!

Though she played it cool on the red carpet last Thursday after a young woman tossed a bag of flour on her, the "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" star is considering pressing charges, she exclusively tells E! News' Giuliana Rancic and Ken Baker.

"I said earlier no I wasn't (going to file a complaint)," Kim said. "I am just going to think about it, because I don't want someone to think they can really get away with that. So we are going to handle that."

She said that she really wanted to reach out, however, to point out that she felt worse for the people running the event last night than she did for herself. Not to mention, it was kinda terrifying....

MORE: Guess who's "so proud" of Kim for taking that flour bomb like a champ?!

Kim was posing for pics at the launch of her new fragrance, True Reflection (also benefiting Dress for Success) at the London West Hollywood hotel, when the not-yet-identified woman seemingly came out of nowhere, catching even the cameras by surprise. Kim was escorted off the carpet to clean up, ASAP, with concerned mom Kris Jenner following closely behind.

Security led the rogue flour girl away, but authorities did not release her name because she was not taken into custody at the scene.

"I was laughing it off earlier and, you know, I think that is the only thing I knew how to do at the time," Kim admitted. "But I just think it is such a shame that someone like that ... would ruin an event, or attempt to ruin an event, that was based around, not only my fragrance, but this organization, Dress For Success. I mean that's what the event was about. These women flew in from all over the country to be a part of this event, that are underprivileged women, that really got the shine taken away from them a little bit. That's why I am calling in now. I feel bad that it was kind of derailed from that."

"Now that I think about it and had some time to digest it," she added, "I think, 'What if that was some other substance? What if that person had a dangerous weapon?' It's scary. And what's even scarier is this woman acted as if she was a part of the press. She just came out of nowhere! And so we are definitely changing things up a little bit, amping up security, taking some measures, and ... I'm gonna definitely deal with it because it is not acceptable."

Meanwhile, scariness aside, how did Kim tidy herself up so quickly and return to the red carpet within minutes after such a shock?

"I have no idea," she replied. "I didn't think it was that bad until I saw the pictures today and was like, 'Wow, there was so much powder on me,' or flour, or whatever it was!"

    GALLERY: Hollywood party pics

"But," Kim concluded, "as soon as I got in the elevator, 'I said, 'Guys there are a ton of people that are paying money to be at this event." If she didn't go back, she would feel as if she were "letting them down ... disrespecting them."

So, "my mom was using a blow dryer trying to get it out of my hair. My whole jacket was wet, because you know we were making sure it didn't look like it was white. She was wetting it down and I said, 'I don't care. Wet or not I'm just gonna put this back on, get all this powder off and go back down there and finish the event. We're not going to let this ruin it.'"

And they most certainly did not.

Simon Cowell allegedly found a woman standing in his London home's bathroom on Saturday night.

    Updated March 26, 10:30 ET.

LONDON - A woman charged with breaking into the west London home of television entrepreneur Simon Cowell was remanded in custody Monday, according to Reuters.

Leanne Zaloumis, 29, was charged with trespassing on Saturday night after smashing Cowell's bathroom window and hiding in his $14-million London mansion's walk-in closet. After she was arrested, officers found blood marks in the bathroom.

Britain's ITN quoted the "X Factor" judge's spokesman Max Clifford as saying that Cowell heard a "loud bang" at around 10:30 p.m. local time (5:30 p.m. ET) on Saturday.

"Simon rushed upstairs to find out what was going on," Clifford said. "It came from the bathroom so he went in and there was a woman standing there holding a brick."

Clifford said Cowell had described the incident as "like something from a horror movie."

"It was a very frightening experience for Simon," he added.

Cowell's security team detained the woman until police appeared, according to The Sun.

Citing sources, The Sun reported that the woman was believed to be an "over-zealous fan," and police said nothing had been taken.

Zaloumis is slated to return to court on June 12.

Making history, Lionsgate's "The Hunger Games" opened to an astounding $155 million at the domestic box office, the third-best debut of all time and the best for any film opening outside of summer.

"Hunger Games" -- the big-screen adaptation of Suzanne Collins' best-selling young-adult novel starring Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth -- also reeled in the biggest opening for a nonsequel.

"It was the perfect storm. Having the first film in a franchise to be so gigantic is amazing. We had a great book, and a great director in Gary Ross," said Lionsgate president of marketing Tim Palen, whose team is credited with a savvy campaign.

Domestic box office revenues were up a whopping 78 percent from a year ago, thanks to the might of "Hunger Games," which changes the fortunes of Lionsgate and gives the studio an instant tentople franchise. Lionsgate will make three more films by splitting the final book in Collins' trilogy into two movies.

Overseas, "Hunger Games" turned in a more muted performance for a solid bow of $59.3 million from 67 markets. The foreign tally, which came in ahead of the international debut of the first "Twilight" film, puts "Hunger Games' " worldwide opening at $214.3 million.

"Hunger Games" is projected to place No. 1 in virtually every foreign market, but did best in English-speaking territories, and particularly Australia, where it debuted to $6.7 million. "Hunger Games" turned in $7.5 million in the U.K., despite unseasonably warm weather, which often keeps consumers outside.

In North America, the tentpole came in not far behind the $158.4 million earned by "The Dark Knight" in its July 2008 debut. "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2" holds the record for best debut with $169.2 million in summer 2011.

Among the past films that "Hunger Games" surpassed in its opening weekend were "Spider-Man 3" ($151.1 million in 2007), "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" ($142.8 million in 2009) and "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1" ($138.1 million last year).

"Hunger Games" drew an A CinemaScore overall on Friday night, with those under the age of 25 giving it a glowing A+ and those over 25 an A-. Tweens and teens turned out in force for the film, with 39 percent of the audience younger than 18, according to CinemaScore exit polling.

THR photos: 'Hunger Games' mall tour

Part of the movie's strength is that it is appealing to males as well as females, unlike the femme-heavy "Twilight" franchise, another blockbuster film property based on a young-adult book series. Males made up 39 percent of "Hunger Games' " Friday night audience.

"The numbers just kept growing and growing. And based on the trajectory of the weekend, we are going to have an unbelievable hold. We are going to play and play," Lionsgate executive vice president of distribution David Spitz said. "I think that when we initially looked at this property, we thought we were going to have "Twilight" numbers in terms of females, but we didn't."

"Hunger Games" also played like a family film, evidenced by its strong Friday to Saturday hold. The film fell a narrow 25 percent, while the "Twilight" and "Harry Potter" films fall anywhere from 44 percent to 60 percent.

According to CinemaScore, 49 percent of those showing up to see "Hunger Games" were under the age of 25; Lionsgate's exit polling showed that 44 percent were under the age of 25.

"Hunger Games" played in a total of 4,137 theaters at the domestic box office, including 268 IMAX theaters, which turned in a hefty $10.6 milion for a per screen average of $40,000, a record for a 2D nonsequel.

Elsewhere at the domestic box office, Sony and MGM's Jonah Hill-Channing Tatum comedy "21 Jump Street" stayed strong its opening weekend despite "Hunger Games." The R-rated pic fell 41 percent to $21.3 million, putting its domestic cume at a handy $71.1 million.

Universal and Illumination's "Dr. Seuss' The Lorax" came in No. 3 after "Hunger Games" and "21 Jump Street," grossing $13.1 million in its fourth weekend for an enviable domestic gross of $177.3 million.

  • At 70, Aretha is due a lot of respect

    Michael Stewart / Getty Images

Aretha Franklin celebrates her 70th birthday at The Helmsley Hotel on March 24 in New York.

It’s easy to view Aretha Franklin as a national treasure. She’s sung everything from gospel to soul to dance music to pop standards, and she sung it well. She even lit up President Barack Obama’s Presidential Inauguration with a stirring rendition of “My Country, ’Tis of Thee.”

But the Queen of Soul, as she’s known, is in fact a mortal and turns 70 on March 25 (a birthday she shares with another larger-than-life pop-music legend Elton John). Franklin came of age singing in church and brought her gospel stylings to the mainstream when she hit it big in the 1960s. She was never as sexy as many of the female singers of her era, nor was she as smooth as the male ones. But what she brought to the table usually outclassed them all: a voice so rich and powerful it virtually defined American soul music.

It’s a voice that influenced generations of singers. With no Aretha, there’s no Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey or Christina Aguilera. For that matter, it’s hard to imagine a lot of male singers without her, such as Luther Vandross or George Michael (with whom she sang a chart-topping duet in 1987).

How to pay tribute to such a soul legend? Make it a point to see her live.

Franklin has had some recent health scares, and health issues purportedly were the reason she backed out of singing at Houston’s funeral. Yet she still soldiers on with her voice in seemingly excellent shape. In light of the deaths of so many of her contemporaries, Franklin is genuinely a survivor, having endured health problems, an abusive husband and financial troubles.

In the next few months, she’s scheduled to play gigs in Ohio, Kentucky and New York. Critics might poke fun at what Franklin wears (see the inauguration clip) or her recent on-and-off marriage plans, but when she starts to sing, you’d be hard pressed to find anyone being critical.

  • Elton John: still standing -- and going strong -- at 65

Michael Ochs Archives / Getty Images

Elton John plays the song "Pinball Wizard" in the "The Who's" rock opera movie "Tommy" which was released on March 26, 1975 in the United Kingdom.

In his 1972 hit “Crocodile Rock,” Elton John nostalgically sung that he “remembered when rock was young.” As the iconic British rocker turns 65 on Sunday, March 25, it’s now John himself that millions remember from when rock was young, since his music has provided a soundtrack for every generation since the 1970s.

John, who was born Reginald Kenneth Dwight, was never as beloved by critics as the '60s performers who came before him. But as the decades rolled on and the hits kept coming, he became an unlikely survivor from the crash-and-burn world of '70s rock. His influence is now so wide it can be seen in Lady Gaga (the godmother of his son) and heard in Billy Joel and even post-grunge acts like Fuel, who covered his 1973 smash “Daniel.”

Elton John performs at BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Fla., on March 9.

John emerged as a singer-songwriter in the late 1960s, but made his name burning up stages dressed in outlandish costumes, singing glam rock-inspired songs like “Saturday Night’s All Right for Fighting” and “The Bitch is Back.” When the ’70s ended, it seemed like his career would as well. But he staged a major comeback in the 1980s, arguably equaling his earlier music with rockers such as “I’m Still Standing” and ballads like “Sad Songs Say So Much.” He also took a daring career risk, coming out as bisexual (and eventually gay), and advocating early on for AIDS awareness.

In 1997, when John re-wrote his 1973 song (and 1987 hit) “Candle in the Wind” as a tribute to the late Princess Diana, Rolling Stone guitarist Keith Richards cracked that John had a thing for “writing songs about dead blondes.” Funny, but John had the last laugh, since the re-recording, also known as “Goodbye England’s Rose,” became the second biggest selling single ever, according to Guinness World Records. Not what you’d expect from a veteran performer, but exactly the kind of surprise success for which John is known. He’s currently touring and plans to release his 31st studio album, “The Diving Board,” this fall.

  • Angelina Jolie 'didn't pay attention' to jokes about her leg at Oscars

    Amy Sancetta / AP

Angelina Jolie at the 84th Academy Awards on Sunday, Feb. 26, in Hollywood.

When Angelina Jolie dramatically flashed her right leg in a black velvet Atelier Versace gown at the 2012 Oscars Feb. 26, it seemed like a brazen ploy for attention, and kicked off one of the biggest internet memes of the year so far.

But Jolie herself was fairly clueless about the entire joke-a-thon, she told The Huffington Post.

Video from Us: Angie gets mocked onstage at Oscars

"I honestly didn't pay attention to it. You know what I mean?" the actress, director and mom, 36, said.

"I don't watch those TV shows and if I go online and see something about myself, I don't click on it," explained Jolie, who attended the awards fest with longtime love Brad Pitt, a best actor nominee. Still, for mere mortals, the "Angelina Jolie's right leg" meme was impossible to avoid post-Oscars, with a popular Twitter handle, photoshopped "Leg-bombing" pics and other gags storming the web. (The mockery began onstage, when Jolie presented a best adapted Screenplay Oscar to "Descendants" screenwriter Jim Rash, who quickly mimicked her super-sexy pose.)

"The people I surround myself with don't really talk about that kind of stuff," Jolie said, laughing. "I heard something, but I didn't pay any attention. It's as simple as being a woman picking a dress you like and having a night, and not really thinking about anything else."

How'd she pick that dress, anyway?

"I wanted to be comfortable and I feel sexy in black velvet," she told Us Weekly on the red carpet on Oscar night.

  • Best Bets: Time to play 'Game of Thrones'

    HBO

Peter Dinklage returns as Tyrion Lannister in "Game of Thrones."

Ready to lose yourself in a fantasy world this week? "Game of Thrones," the huge hit series from HBO, returns, and the first of two Snow White-themed movies comes to theaters. Here's our look at the week ahead in entertainment.

    TV
Finally, "Game of Thrones" is returning to HBO. Ned Stark won't be back, but Tyrion, Daenerys, Cersei, Jaime, Robb, Joffrey, Catelyn and the rest are ready to clash swords again. The second season will loosely follow the plot of "Clash of Kings," the second book in George R.R. Martin's bestselling series. Fans of the books eagerly await the introduction of new characters including Brienne of Tarth, the woman warrior who fights as well as any man, and Stannis Baratheon, brother of the late King Robert. It may be time to finally give in and order HBO.  (April 1, 9 p.m., HBO.)

Blake Shelton, Lady Antebellum, Carrie Underwood, The Band Perry and Rascal Flatts will be among the performers at the 47th annual Academy of Country Music Awards, broadcast live from Las Vegas. Shelton and Reba McEntire will co-host, and Shelton is also nominated for two big awards. (April 1, 8 p.m., CBS.)

    Movies
Yes, there are two Snow White-themed movies coming out this spring, and they're very different. "Snow White and the Huntsman" is a fantasy drama coming in June, but arriving this week is the lighter-looking "Mirror, Mirror," a comedic look at the fairy tale. Julia Roberts plays the evil queen, with Lily Collins as Snow White and Armie Hammer as the prince. It'll be satisfying to see a Snow White who can finally fight back. (Opens March 30.)

It's been 35 years since "Slap Shot," the cult classic film about a trio of hockey-enforcer brothers. Some fans of that movie have high hopes for "Goon," starring Seann William Scott as a regular Joe who's good in a fight and gets sucked into playing hockey even though he can't skate. Liev Schreiber plays the veteran player who drops gloves against Scott. (Opens March 30.)

    DVD

Not every critic loved 2011's "A Dangerous Method," but Roger Ebert found David Cronenberg's film "absorbing." Keira Knightley plays a woman who's a patient of two of the most famed figures in psychology, Sigmund Freud (Viggo Mortensen) and Carl Jung (Michael Fassbender). It didn't play in many theaters, so now's your chance to check it out from the safety of your own couch, psychiatric or otherwise. (On DVD and Blu-ray March 27.)

Four never-before-released-on-DVD episodes of "Mystery Science Theater 3000"are coming out this week. "King Dinosaur, "The Castle of Fu Manchu," "Code Name: Diamond Head," and "Last of the Wild Horses are the films, and the classic shorts "X Marks the Spot" and "A Day at the Fair" also come in for riffing from Joel, Mike and the Bots. (Out on DVD March 27.)

  • BBC: 'Borat' anthem played at Kuwait medal ceremony for Kazakhstan winner

    Vince Bucci / Getty Images

Borat Sagdiyev, played by actor Sacha Baron Cohen, attends a "book signing" in 2007 in Los Angeles.

Kazakhstan's shooting team demanded an apology after a spoof national anthem from the comedy film "Borat" was played instead of the real one at a medal ceremony in Kuwait, the BBC reported Friday.

The team's coach told Kazakh media the organizers of the Kuwait tournament had downloaded the parody from the Internet by mistake and had also got the Serbian national anthem wrong.

Video of Thursday's original ceremony posted on YouTube shows gold medalist Maria Dmitrienko listening solemnly to the anthem before smiling.

The BBC reported that the team demanded an apology and the ceremony was later rerun.

The spoof anthem, from the movie featuring British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen, "Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan," praises Kazakhstan for its superior potassium exports and for having the cleanest prostitutes in the region.

"Borat" portrays Kazakhs as ignorant and backward and was banned in Kazakhstan.

  • Lifetime pulls 'Topless' 'Dance Moms' episode

    Lifetime

"Topless Showgirls" episode of "Dance Moms."

If you thought the little girls dressed as strippers or costumed as Madonna (complete with the famous cone bra) were inappropriate on "Toddlers & Tiaras," you probably haven't been watching "Dance Moms" this season.

On March 6, Lifetime aired the episode titled "Topless Showgirls" in which the little dancers appeared to dance -- you guessed it -- topless on a showgirls-type performance. According to instructor Abby Lee Miller, the act was a fan dance. "You cover your body with the fans so you give the illusion that you're nude underneath the fans," she explained on the show. "C'mon. We all know you have tan bras on and tan tights on. ... Everyone in the industry knows the girls are completely covered and everything's harmless."

Sounds lovely -- for an adult. For pre-teen girls, maybe not so much. "My outfit was pretty tiny," young dancer Mackenzie told the cameras. "I could fit this on my American Doll."

Lifetime has confirmed to TODAY.com that it has since decided to yank the episode. Not only will "Topless Showgirls" never air on the network again, it won't be available online either. (If you're really curious, Gawker has a clip available.)

What do you think of Lifetime's decision to remove the episode? Good move, or too little too late? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.

The baby-to-be will join Hattie (who was born in October 2011), brother Liam, 5, and sister Stella, 3, the actress and reality star's children with husband Dean McDermott. Spelling, 38, wed Canadian-born actor McDermott, 45, back in May 2006.

  • Six-year-old trumps reporter in spelling competition

How did this 6-year-old earn her place in the Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee? By keeping cool amongst competitors of any age, including one Fox News reporter who found himself another casualty of the youngster’s remarkable mind.

After beating out 21 middle school and elementary school opponents in her local town of Dale City, Va., Lori Anne Madison, the youngest contestant in the Prince William County spell-offs, stated she wasn’t threatened by anyone, even those who may have a few years on her.

“I’m confident because I’ve been in a spelling bee with older kids before,” explained Madison. “I judge them for who they are, not their age.”

Giving her a run for her money, FOX 5 DC's Paul Raphel waged his own battle with the young champion, and lost miserably in the process.

The duel began with a win for Madison, who nailed her first word, “okapi,” while Raphel offered a paltry attempt at spelling “tourniquet.”

He tried, “t-e-r-n-i-c-h-e,” but the judges were underwhelmed.

“Not even close,” they said to Raphel.

Madison continued her flawless run on subsequent words, “metacarpal” and “embarrassing,” easily trumping Raphel, who couldn’t even finished the second round.

“I don’t know, I don’t know,” the reporter laughed when broached with the word “lozenge.”

Raphel later offered an explanation for his poor showing after his fellow news anchor wondered if, perhaps, he’d played fool to the elementary schooler.

“I wish I could say that,” said Raphel. “Admittedly, going into this, I told everyone I was a very, very bad speller, but I think I proved this.”

To train for the real competition, Madison says her parents quizzed her, she read lists, and also relied on “a really good memory.”

The impressive little girl also said it felt “great” to be a winner, adding, “It’s hard to put it in words really.”

Jack White, right, and Meg White of the White Stripes perform "Seven Nation Army" during the Grammy Awards in 2004.

Jack White has told NME that there is "absolutely no chance" that he will ever reform the White Stripes. "I'm not the kind of person that would retire from baseball and come out of retirement the next year," says White. "I mean, if we went to all the trouble of telling people we're done, we meant it, you know?

"If we were forced to change our mind about that, I can only imagine the reason being if we went bankrupt or really needed the cash, which would be a really sad thing," he told the British rock magazine. "I would probably be issuing an apology along with the announcement of the show dates."

Though White has taken a hardline stance on a potential reunion, he is happy to perform several of the band's tunes on his current tour as a solo act. Recent gigs have included Stripes hits "Seven Nation Army," "My Doorbell" and "Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground" along with fan favorites like "Ball and Biscuit" and "Hello Operator."

  • Susan Sarandon admits to embracing lipo

    Larry Busacca / Getty Images

Not ashamed of a few personal touch-ups, Susan Sarandon recently confessed to having cosmetic surgery done on her face, and says she may do more in the future.

"I've had some lipo under my chin and under my eyes,” the 65-year-old actress tells People magazine.

Sarandon, who currently stars in the Duplass Brothers’ film, “Jeff, Who Lives at Home,” also suggests she could embark on additional work down the road, if she can keep her natural look in the process.

"I have these two huge frown lines here (on my forehead),” Sarandon explains. “But if you can't move your face or you're unrecognizable, I don't see how that's a productive enhancement. You don't want to look like a female impersonation of yourself."

Sarandon’s statements are bold in lieu of the typically silent, aging Hollywood, where even younger stars have been afraid to admit they’ve gone under the knife. She also, for the first time, acknowledges rumors about her two-year relationship with 34-year-old Jonathan Brinklin, commenting, "Dating is such a stupid word. You can say...We are collaborating in a lot of different areas."

Since splitting with longtime partner Tim Robbins in 2009 after 23 years together, the actress and Oscar winner for 1995’s “Dead Man Walking” has been mum on the subject of romance until now. She was also questioned about her businessman beau when she appeared on “The Wendy Williams Show” on March 14 to discuss her film, and new role modeling for Neiman Marcus.

“We hear that you…have another gentleman in you life?” Williams asked the star, who wouldn’t comment specifically, but laughed at the talk show host’s joke she was “gettin’ some.”

Commented Sarandon, “Well, I’m very relaxed.”

Fans are appreciating the actress’ candid demeanor, and speaking out in her praise.

“I respect her for admitting it,” comments a Yahoo! reader going by hah in regards to the actress’ plastic surgery. “It was done well so she didn't have to publicly address it. If everyone who had something done would say it, it would go a long way informing the public about what is realistic and what is not. I am so tired of the 'I eat very healthy and do yoga' lie.”
