Survey confirms a hunch: Americans love Adele, don't like Justin Bieber

By Randee Dawn, NBC News contributor

    Getty Images file

    Adele and Justin Bieber.

Americans may buy Justin Bieber's music, but that doesn't mean they like him much. According to a recent survey from Public Policy Polling, the pop idol is just not considered very likable: He received 54 percent unfavorable ratings and only 20 percent likable ones in the poll, which surveyed 571 voters on May 6 and 7 across the U.S.

PPP was testing the favorability ratings of some of today's biggest music stars, and -- perhaps unsurprisingly -- a Brit earned the most accolades: Adele had 54 percent likability; close on her heels were Taylor Swift (53 percent), Justin Timberlake (52 percent) and Beyonce (51 percent). But breaking that 50 percent mark was hard for virtually everyone else -- including Jay-Z (25 percent), Lady Gaga (29 percent) and Rihanna (30 percent).

No surprise: Chris Brown's likability rating? A mere 13 percent. (And only 8 percent said that Rihanna should get back together with Brown; 67 percent say forget about that relationship.)

Bieber's numbers were the only ones that ran across party lines -- Democrats, Republicans and Independents all said they had negative views of him. Meanwhile, given the choices of Adele, Bieber, Beyonce, Brown, Jay-Z, Timberlake, Lady Gaga or Rihanna, as President of the U.S., 34 percent chose Timberlake.

That said, when asked if Timberlake should keep making music, acting, reuniting with N'Sync or playing golf, the biggest group said stick with the songs (40 percent).

PPP surveyed 571 voters nationwide on May 6th and 7th. The margin of error is +/-4.1%. This poll was not paid for or authorized by any campaign or political organization. PPP surveys are conducted through automated telephone interviews.

Joan Rivers blasted for fat jokes, Holocaust jokes

Donna Ward / Getty Images Contributor

Joan Rivers arrives for "Late Show With David Letterman" on Tuesday.

    By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, TODAY

Singer Adele took home an Oscar in the best original song category Sunday night, but she also had to listen to host Seth MacFarlane joke about her weight. The jokes aren't over: On Wednesday night's "Late Night With David Letterman," comedian Joan Rivers poked fun at the singer's size as well.

"I met Adele! Has she been on the show?" Rivers asked Letterman, puffing out her cheeks and holding her arms far away from her body. When the audience booed, Rivers snapped, "Oh no! No! She's thin! Can we just talk to each other here?"

"What is her song, 'Rolling in the Deep'? She should add, 'Fried Chicken,'" Rivers cracked.

    Watch on YouTube

Rivers went on to say that Adele expressed concern about her live Oscars performance, saying, "My throat, my throat! I don't know if I can swallow."

"And I said, 'Oh yeah, you can swallow,'" Rivers said, again holding her arms out to indicate a large person.

Rivers is also being called upon by the Anti-Defamation League to apologize for a "vulgar and hideous" Holocaust joke she made about German-born model Heidi Klum.

On the E! show "Fashion Police" Monday, Rivers said, "The last time a German looked this hot was when they were pushing Jews into the ovens."

The ADL says in a press release that  the segment has been shown at least four times on the network and appeared briefly on YouTube.

"It is vulgar and offensive for anybody to use the death of six million Jews and millions of others in the Holocaust to make a joke, but this is especially true for someone who is Jewish and who proudly and publicly wears her Jewishness on her sleeve," the ADL said of Rivers.

At press time, "Fashion Police" had not responded to a request for comment.

Adele's Grammy award crasher explains how he made it on stage

By Seth Abramovitch , The Hollywood Reporter

Despite heightened security at the 55th Grammy Awards, Ukrainian TV journalist and celebrity prankster Vitalii Sediuk managed to infiltrate the Staples Center on Sunday night and nearly accept an award on Adele's behalf. Now Sediuk, 24, exclusively tells The Hollywood Reporter how he pulled off the high-risk stunt that landed him in jail.

VIDEO: Grammys crasher jailed for on-stage Adele stunt

“My channel didn’t get credentialed, so I went with friends who had tickets,” Sediuk, who once earned a slap from Will Smith after kissing him on a red carpet, reveals. “They didn’t check how many we had, so I was let in. First I went to the media line and interviewed quite a few celebrities, like Jennifer Lopez and Nicole Kidman....Then I just followed one girl in a green dress through the (Staples Center) gates. They checked my pockets but never asked to see a ticket. Only once I was inside the building did I realize, ‘Oh my gosh, it’s Katy Perry!’”

After being told the show was about to begin, Sediuk found an empty seat in the second row, surrounded by A-listers such as Justin Timberlake, Beyonce and Sting. “I think it belonged to Adam Levine,” Sediuk says, “because he was sitting on the ground."

Sediuk insists he had no plans to mount the Grammys stage: "The idea to go on the stage came up at the last second. To be honest, Adele is my favorite singer. So when I heard her name, I came up with this idea to go up on the stage and say what I said.... I pretended this was an award for me, and then I said, 'Thank you, Adele. You’re my inspiration.'”

It all happened so quickly that security and bodyguards failed to react -- but Lopez, who was startled but composed, handled the situation deftly, pulling Sediuk away from the microphone and gesturing him offstage with a thumb.

"I don't remember her (facial) expression, but I remember someone pulled me. When I saw the video, I realized it was Jennifer Lopez," Sediuk says. After he walked backstage, crew and security were ready for him -- and weren't pleased.

"People were quite angry. I felt very nervous -- this will sound funny -- and I asked for water. And one guy was so furious, but he brought water. Then police guys took me to a room and asked a lot of questions about how I got inside," he says.

After being cuffed, fingerprinted, photographed and spending a night in a cold jail cell, Sediuk was charged with trespassing and released Monday morning pending a March court date. As for his crime, he accepts his punishment but insists that while he can sometimes "be rude," his antics are mostly innocuous and well-meaning.

"My purpose is to entertain and to show a different emotion of celebrities," Sediuk says, adding, "I’m not a crazy guy. I just think differently."

Has Adele named her new baby 'Angelo'?

    TODAY

    Adele sports her name necklace.

    By Randee Dawn, TODAY contributor

What's in a name? You won't find out from Adele, at least not yet: The Grammy- and Golden Globe-winning singer is not talking about what they're calling her new baby ... but did she let it slip by accident?

The "21" singer was spotted out and about wearing a gold chain with the scripted name "Angelo" in it. Could Adele be following in the footsteps of many moms who work their babies' names into their everyday jewelry?

Britain's The Sun tabloid has quoted a source confirming the name, but admits "we're not sure of the significance." So take that for what it's worth.

For the moment, that's pretty much all there is to know. Though she has referred to him as her "little peanut," she told People magazine backstage at the Globes that, "I am not sharing his name at the moment. It is very personal to me. I am enjoying him on my own."

The "little peanut" was born in Oct. 2012.

Adele set to perform 'Skyfall' at Oscar ceremony

By Georg Szalai, The Hollywood Reporter

Adele will perform her Oscar-nominated theme song from "Skyfall" at the 85th Academy Awards ceremony, the show's producers said Wednesday.

They said that the performance will be the first time she will have performed "Skyfall" anywhere live and her first U.S. TV performance since the Grammys last year.

After a break from the spotlight due to her pregnancy, Adele recently appeared at the Golden Globes and accepted an award for the song there.

The song, "Skyfall," from the James Bond film, is nominated in the best original song category at the Oscars. Written by Adele and Paul Epworth, it is the first Bond theme ever to debut in Billboard's top 10 chart and the first to be nominated for an Oscar since "For Your Eyes Only" in 1981.

"It's an honor to be nominated and terrifyingly wonderful to be singing in front of people who have captured my imagination over and over again,” said Adele. “It's something I've never experienced and probably only ever will once!"

"We have enormous respect for Adele's unique artistry as a songwriter and a singer," said Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, the producers of this year's Oscar show.  "She is currently one of the most successful recording artists in the world, and we believe that her performance of "Skyfall" will be an exciting Oscar moment for audiences watching at the Dolby Theatre and on television screens around the world."

The Oscars will be handed out on Feb. 24, at the Dolby Theatre at the Hollywood & Highland Center. Seth MacFarlane will host the awards show on ABC.

Adele keeps rolling, voted Entertainer of the Year

By Jake Coyle, The Associated Press

NEW YORK -- Though Adele didn't have a new album or a worldwide tour in 2012, she's still rolling. After a year of Grammy glory and James Bond soundtracking, Adele has been voted The Associated Press Entertainer of the Year.

    Paul Buck / EPA file

British singer Adele holds her six Grammy Awards in Los Angeles in February.

In 132 ballots submitted by members and subscribers of the AP, Adele easily outpaced other vote-getters like Taylor Swift, "Fifty Shades of Grey" author E.L. James, the South Korean viral video star PSY and the cast of "Twilight." Editors and broadcasters were asked to cast their ballot for the person who had the most influence on entertainment and culture in 2012.

Adele's year began in triumph at the Grammys, took a turn through recording the theme to the 007 film "Skyfall," and ended with the birth of her son in October. The ubiquitous Adele was that rare thing in pop culture: an unqualified sensation, a megastar in a universe of niche hits.

By the end of the year, her sophomore album, "21," had passed 10 million copies sold in the U.S., only the 21st album in the Nielsen SoundScan era (begun in 1991) to achieve diamond status. Buoyed by hits like "Someone Like You" and "Rolling in the Deep" long after its release in early 2011, "21" was also the top-selling album on iTunes for the second year running.

As David Panian, news editor for Michigan's Daily Telegram, put it: "It just seemed like you couldn't turn on the radio without hearing one of her songs."

Video: Schoolchildren sing it like Adele in India

Women have had a lock on the annual Entertainer of the Year selection. Previous winners include Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Betty White and Tina Fey. Stephen Colbert is the lone male winner in the six-year history of voting.

The Grammy Awards in February were essentially the de-facto crowning of the 24-year-old Adele, whose real name is Adele Adkins, as a pop queen. She won six awards, including album of the year. It was also a comeback of sorts for Adele, who performed for the first time since having vocal cord surgery, drawing a standing ovation from the Staples Center crowd.

Accepting the album of the year award, a teary Adele exclaimed: "Mum, girl did good!" The emotional, sniffling singer endeared many viewers to her when she copped in her acceptance speech to having "a bit of snot."

"This record is inspired by something that is really normal and everyone's been through it: just a rubbish relationship," said Adele.

Video: Toddler belts Adele ballad, gains fans worldwide

But her luck in love has since turned, thanks to her boyfriend Simon Konecki. In an interview with Vogue magazine, Adele said she was through with break-up records and done being "a bitter witch." When Adele announced in June that she was having a baby with Konecki, her website promptly crashed under the heavy traffic. Their son was born in October.

    Follow @ TODAY_ent

With such an avalanche of success and now a mother of a newborn son, Adele has understandably taken a step out of the spotlight. One notable exception was recording the opening credits theme song to "Skyfall." The song was recorded with her "21" producer Paul Epworth at the Abbey Road Studios in London with a 77-piece orchestra. Within hours, it zoomed to the top of digital charts.

"There was an overwhelming embrace of Adele and her music," said Joe Butkiewicz, executive editor of the Times Leader in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. "And that was never more evident to me than when I heard teenagers express their enthusiastic expectations for the new James Bond movie because Adele performed the theme song."

The song recently received a Golden Globe nomination. No Bond theme has ever won the best original song Oscar, but given Adele's awards success thus far, it wouldn't be a stretch to think she has a chance of changing that. The tune is among the 75 short-listed songs in the Academy Awards category.

-- Projects Editor Brooke Lansdale contributed to this report.

Pop music mashup puts fresh spin on 2012's overplayed hits

    By Kurt Schlosser, NBC News

If you spent a lot of time and money listening to and accumulating the year's hottest pop hits, a new video mashup might make you wonder if it was all worth it. Sigh. Oh, sorry. Meant to say PSY.

    Watch on YouTube

We're not saying that because the crop of music in 2012 was particularly bad. (Someone is no doubt saying that, probably very loudly, but it's not us). We're just saying that when cobbled together into one 8-minute superhit, the year's music all sounds pretty much the same. You could have waited for this one song.

"Pop Danthology 2012" by Daniel kimaginati0n Kim features more than 50 songs and their accompanying video clips. Adele, Chris Brown, Rihanna, Katy Perry, One Direction, Ke$ha, Flo Rida, Kelly Clarkson, Maroon 5, Pink, Justin Bieber and PSY are some of those who made the cut.

    Follow @ NBCNewsEnt

How many times did you hear "Gangnam Style" or "Call Me Maybe" or "Somebody That I Used To Know" this year? Taken on their own, none of those songs really deserves another click. Mashed with the same-sounding hooks and Auto-Tuned vocals of Usher or Christina Aguilera or Jennifer Lopez or whomever, the new song/video becomes oddly entrancing. You might find this treatment helps make a lot of these songs fresh and enjoyable again.

If 8 minutes of dance pop was a walk in the park for your ears, maybe you're game for trying 11 hours worth of music on for size. BuzzFeed mines different genres for its Ultimate 2012 Playlist. "There's enough variety here that pretty much anyone is bound to run into a lot of stuff they either haven't heard, or perhaps had dismissed in some way," the site says. Start listening ...

Adele's haunting 'Skyfall' James Bond theme song released online

    Danny Moloshok / Reuters file

    Adele.

By Seth Abramovitch , The Hollywood Reporter

After snippets had begun to surface online, "Skyfall," Adele's title song for the new James Bond film of the same name, has been unleashed in its entirety.

The single was officially scheduled for a premiere at 7:07 p.m. ET -- or 0:07 a.m. in the U.K. -- but a French radio station has jumped the gun, so to speak, and posted "Skyfall" earlier today.

The version posted to the singer's YouTube channel, below, features an animation based on the the song's cover art, and incorporates some of the song's lyrics.

"Skyfall" instantly feels like a Bond theme, with the singer's sultry voice set against a minor chord progression. Done in big, orchestral style, the mood -- like the singer -- is all 1960s throwback, back when Bond themes like "Goldfinger" were smooth, seductive and larger than life.

The lyrics, too, offer the classic Bond vibe -- apocalyptically dangerous and very sexy.

    Watch on YouTube

"Let the sky fall/ When it crumbles / We will stand tall / Face it all together/ As sky falls," she sings.

Adele wrote the song with Paul Epsworth -- a top songwriter and producer who has also worked with Cee Lo Green and Florence and the Machine, among others -- after the reading the script.

"I was a little hesitant at first to be involved with the theme song for 'Skyfall,'" she says in a statement. "There’s a lot of instant spotlight and pressure when it comes to a Bond song. But I fell in love with the script and Paul had some great ideas for the track and it ended up being a bit of a no-brainer to do it in the end."

Of recording with a 77-piece orchestra at Abbey Road Studios in London, Adele admits, "When we recorded the strings, it was one of the proudest moments of my life. I’ll be back combing my hair when I’m 60 telling people I was a Bond girl back in the day, I’m sure!

Directed by Sam Mendes, "Skyfall" opens in the U.S. on Nov. 9th.

Grammy-winning British singer Adele is adding Bond girl to her superstar resume by signing on to write and sing the theme of the latest James Bond film "Skyfall" -- her first song to be released since her best-selling heartbreak album "21" -- Columbia Records said in a statement on Monday.

Adele, 24, who swept the Grammy Awards earlier this year with accolades in six categories, will release the song on Friday on her official website, to coincide with the Bond film franchise's 50th anniversary and Global James Bond Day.

The sultry singer wrote "Skyfall" with long-time collaborator Paul Epworth. She recorded it at London's Abbey Road Studios with a 77-piece orchestra. Adele said in a statement that she was persuaded to do the song after she "fell in love with the script."

"I was a little hesitant at first to be involved with the theme song for 'Skyfall.' There's a lot of instant spotlight and pressure when it comes to a Bond song," the singer said.

"When we recorded the strings, it was one of the proudest moments of my life. I'll be backcombing my hair when I'm 60, telling people I was a Bond girl back in the day, I'm sure."

The James Bond title songs have become a signature of the films, featuring suave British agent 007 holding a gun in a pose that has become iconic.

Singers who have performed the title songs over the past five decades include Shirley Bassey in 1971's "Diamonds Are Forever" and 1979's "Moonraker," Paul McCartney on 1973's "Live and Let Die," and more recently, Madonna on 2002's "Die Another Day." Jack White and Alicia Keys performed "Another Way To Die" from 2008's "Quantum of Solace."

"Skyfall," the 23rd film in the Bond franchise and the third film with actor Daniel Craig in the lead role, will see the womanizing rogue super-spy take on another mission to save the world. The film will be released in Britain and most European nations on October 26. It arrives in U.S. movie theaters on November 9.

Singer Adele has announced on her blog that she is expecting her first child.

In a post titled "I've Got Some News," the singer, 24, writes, "I'm delighted to announce that Simon and I are expecting our first child together. I wanted you to hear the news direct from me, obviously we’re over the moon and very excited but please respect our privacy at this precious time. Yours always, Adele xx."

Simon Konecki, 36, is the singer's boyfriend and the CEO of a charity called Drop4Drop. He reportedly has a 5-year-old daughter from a previous marriage.

In May, Adele picked up 12 Billboard Music Awards for her album "21," winning top artist, top female artist, and top album, among other honors. In Febuary, she claimed six Grammys, including best album and record of the year.

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, NBC News

Singer Adele's hit song, "Rolling in the Deep," is credited with helping a 7-year-old British girl wake from the coma she suffered after a brain hemorrhage.

Charlotte Neve suffered the hemorrhage April 11 during a normal night of watching DVDs with her family, and mother Leila told the U.K. Telegraph that the situation became so grave that "doctors told me to say goodbye."

But when "Rolling in the Deep," a song mother and daughter often sang, came on the radio, Leila Neve started singing it to her daughter and the little girl started to smile.

"It was the first time she had reacted to anything since the hemorrhage," Leila Neve told the newspaper. "The nurses were astounded and told me to keep singing, and she smiled again. The nurses said it was like I 'unlocked her' and from that day she started getting better and better."

Charlotte Neve is now recovering at home, but still suffers from partial blindness and memory loss, the Telegraph reports. The family has set up a Facebook page for donations.

Also in April, BeeGees founding member Robin Gibb awoke from a coma after his family sang and played music to him. He reportedly awoke while music from his latest composition, the classical "Titanic Requiem," was playing. Gibb died May 20 from liver and kidney failure.
