'Amazing Race' producers apologize for offending Vietnam veterans

    CBS

The cast of "The Amazing Race's" 22nd season.

    By The Hollywood Reporter

CBS and the producers of "The Amazing Race" have apologized for last week's episode, which came under fire for using a B-52 memorial in Hanoi, Vietnam, as a key part of the leg.

The episode saw contestants go to the memorial -- which depicts the wreckage of an downed American bomber plane during the Vietnam war -- to find their next clue. The Veterans of Foreign Wars, along with several Fox News anchors and viewers, complained about the usage of the memorial.

“The B-52 scene, as well as the young people singing a propaganda song, was totally unnecessary to the show’s plot, which speaks volumes about naive producers who think they’re in charge when they are not,” VFW national commander John Hamilton said wrote in a nearly 500-word letter to CBS Corp. chief Leslie Moonves.

Sunday night's episode kicked off with the apology, read by "Amazing Race" host Phil Keoghan.

"Parts of last Sunday's episode, filmed in Vietnam, were insensitive to a group that is very important to us -- our nation's veterans," the statement read. "We want to apologize to veterans, particularly those who served in Vietnam, as well as to their families and any viewers who were offended by the broadcast. All of us here have the most profound respect for the men and women who fight for our country."

CBS had declined to comment on the controversy earlier in the week.

'The Amazing Race' finale ends with shocking win

    By Bruna Nessif, E! Online

    Cliff Lipson/CBS

The 21st season of "The Amazing Race" ended in a surprising win for one of the couples in the competition.

It all came down to this. "The Amazing Race" two-hour special finale Sunday night ended by crowning the pair that was named season 21's $1 million winner, but there were plenty of hurdles Lexi and Trey, James and Jaymes, and Josh and Brent had to face before getting to that point.

    'Amazing Racer' Vanessa Macias' mugshot

The 11th leg of the race kicked off with the four teams having to travel by train from Barcelona to Loire Valley, France, and a slight conspiracy. Everyone was trying to formulate a plan to get Josh and Brent (aka the Beekman Boys) out of the race. However, they weren't too discreet about it.

With that idea in the back of their heads, the Beekman Boys made sure to let the others know what was up. While in France, each pair had to grab eight crates, throw them in their car and head to Chateau de Villandry to find a stone dog that contained their next clue. And even with an injured ankle, Josh was still a strong competitor (his French helped, too).

Each team had to find da Vinci's final resting place, Chateau D'Amboise, but first, the twins had to complete a Speed Bump challenge which required them to lace a woman into an 18th century corset. Wasn't too bad.

At the chateau, the duos came across a Detour, with the choices being Chow or Plow. And yes, the choices are pretty much what they sound like. If they chose Chow, they'd have to make a meal for a pack of hungry hunting hounds, whereas Plow, required them to use a traditional plow that was attached to a horse in a field.

Did 'Amazing Race' get a Producer Guild nomination?

Once each team finished their Chow or Plow, they headed to La Cave des Roches next, where they reached a Road Block that had one member searching for distinct types of mushrooms in a dark maze of tunnels. Yeah, not very fun and extra hard. Regardless, the contestants finished their task with James and Jaymes in the lead (which won them each a Ford Escape), Trey and Lexi in second, and whaddaya know, Josh and Brent in third!

Sorry, Natalie and Nadiya, time to say goodbye.

As the race got closer to the end and that much more intense, the remaining three teams flew to New York City to go to Coney Island where they had to find a clue on a Houdini poster.Trey and Lexi were able to see it first and go to the Brooklyn Navy Yard, with Josh and Brent behind them.

Twitter Follow The Clicker on Twitter

This is where it got even more interesting. At the navy yard, one member from each team had to perform a Road Block, which had them hanging from a crane 15 stories up in a straightjacket (!), and they had escape in order to move on with the race. Do you see the Houdini connection here? Good.

Surprisingly, Trey got out quick, keeping him and Lexi in the lead and heading to Lombardi's Pizzeria, where the teams had to memorize three orders and deliver 10 pizzas in order to get their next clue from the owner. Trey and Lexi maintain the lead, while Josh and Brent give James and Jaymes a chance to catch up because they delivered the wrong pizzas.

    'X Factor' top 4 revealed

After playing the role of pizza delivery boy, the teams were off to the United Nations where one member from each twosome had to identify "hello" in the nine different languages they heard at the pit stops throughout the race. Ooooh.

And this, ladies and gentleman, is where Josh flourished. The Beekman Boy finished first, with James behind him and Lexi in third as the teams were finally racing to the finish line at Gotham Hall!

The first pair to cross and win $1 million were -- drum roll, please -- Josh and Brent! Can you believe it?! James and Jaymes came in second and Trey and Lexi came in third.

"We never, ever thought we would hear you say those words to us," Brent said to the cameras after host Phil Keoghan crowned them the winners.

Josh continued, "We were underdogs, and what I hope this proves to people -- whether they're a minority or they're out of work or they're losing their house or whatever -- if they just keep going and keep working as hard as they can, people will help, and at some point you will win."

Move over, Probst! This year the reality host Emmy should go to Tom Bergeron

    Kelsey Mcneal / ABC

"Dancing's" Tom Bergeron has proven time and again he deserves an Emmy.

    By Ree Hines, TODAY contributor

On Sunday night, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences will honor the best the boob tube has to offer at the 2012 Primetime Emmy Awards. Top dramas, comedies and more will receive well-earned recognition, as will the stars who bring those shows to life.

But while much of the pre-telecast buzz has focused on the expected big winners in the major categories -- for instance, those for the leading actors and actresses that make "Modern Family" or "Downton Abbey" must-see TV -- there's one Emmy award that promises to be a complete surprise no matter who wins it.

The Primetime Emmy Award for outstanding host for a reality or reality-competition program could have been called the Annual Jeff Probst Appreciation Award -- until this year. Every year since the category's inception in 2008, "Survivor's" main man has claimed the prize. But in a surprise omission, Probst's name didn't even show up among the nominees for 2012. This time the honor will go to another reality emcee.

But who? Those in the running include "The Amazing Race's" Phil Keoghan, who's been up for the award four times now; Cat Deeley of "So You Think You Can Dance," who's on the list for the second time; Betty White is in the running for the first time for her work on "Off Their Rockers"; and both "American Idol" host Ryan Seacrest and "Dancing With the Stars" leading man Tom Bergeron are perennial nominees.

As for who will get the reality TV nod, that's anyone's guess. But who should get it? Well ...

Sure, a good argument could be made for any host on the list. White, a seven-time Emmy winner in other categories, is always a deserving sentimental pick -- for anything. And it's hard to find fault in how Keoghan and Deeley keep fans focused on their respective shows. As for Seacrest, he sets the bar for hosting a singing showdown. But if there's any justice in the world of reality TV (and yeah, that's open for debate), Bergeron should snag the award.

    Follow @TODAY_Clicker

Like fellow contenders Deeley and Seacrest, Bergeron has to navigate the tricky nature of live TV for his gig, which is no small feat. But unlike them, he does it in an environment that borders on the absurd. He's surrounded by the constant distractions of a cavalcade of spray-tanned stars, a live orchestra, a massive glittering mirror ball, barely-there costumes and performances ranging from near-flawless attention grabbers to full-on, train-wreck awful. Yet somehow, he makes it all look easy.

Head judge Len Goodman and his fellow panelists bickering instead of critiquing? No problem. Bergeron swiftly moves them right along. Petulant pro hoofer giving the panel grief? Whatever. Quick-witted Bergeron finds just the right zinger to ease the tension. Star performer passes out on stage? Yikes! But Bergeron shows concern, reassures the crowd and throws to a commercial.

There's no one like him. The man performs on live TV with the ease of someone who's rehearsed it all before and the off-the-cuff spontaneity of someone who doesn't even need a rehearsal.

So, while the voting members of the Academy can't really make a bad decision by picking any of the reality hosts up for the award, they also couldn't make a better decision than to pick Tom Bergeron.

Which reality TV host do think deserves Emmy's top honor? Take our poll below and then share your thoughts on our Facebook page.

Former 'Amazing Race' producer Jeff Rice found dead in Uganda

    By Ian Johnston, msnbc.com staff

An American television producer has been found dead in mysterious circumstances while working in Uganda, his brother-in-law told msnbc.com on Wednesday.

Paul Blackman said that family members had heard that poisoning was suspected in the death of father of two Jeff Rice, 39, who is originally from Oklahoma.

Blackman, who is the brother of Rice's wife Sally, added that the situation was unclear and relatives were trying to establish what exactly had happened

Rice, who previously worked for shows including "The Amazing Race" and Animal Planet's "Whale Wars," died on Friday night.

Rice's assistant, who Blackman declined to name, also became ill and was taken to a hospital in Uganda.

"We've sent people up there to get some answers," Blackman told msnbc.com by phone from Durban, South Africa. "Nothing is finalized yet.

Addressing media reports that Rice had been fatally poisoned, Blackman said: "I don't know where they are getting this 'definitely poisoned' thing."

Rice moved to South Africa about 13 years ago and holds dual citizenship, Blackman said. His wife is South African.

Rice's death was first reported by FoxNews.com.

    'Really tough to handle'
Blackman said Wednesday morning that he was looking after their children, girls aged seven and two, while Sally Blackman tried to get information from the South African police.

He said his sister was finding the uncertainty "really tough to handle, but, yeah, she's strong."

"There's so much stuff in the air about possible poisoning, all that kind of stuff," Blackman said. "At the moment, we're trying to get Jeff's body out of there to get some answers."

Blackman said Rice had been "a historian, tour guide kind of person" in the United States and had started to work in television about three years ago. He and his wife ran SB Productions in Durban.

He added his brother-in-law was working on either a future show or documentary in Uganda.

"He was a fantastic producer apparently, a very, very sought-after producer," he said. "The messages (of condolence) coming in have been very, very good actually. It's been fantastic, he's a very well-liked character. He was a good guy, very relaxed and just a very good guy."

The "about us" section of SB Productions' website says Rice decided there were "better ways to spend his time" after five years "contributing to the stalemate of the 405 in LA."

"From pie in the sky to looking no futher than his nose, his mind is always churning. If Jeff isn't crunching budgets or breaking down scripts, he can probably be found in some unusual African location with his Power Book and a bottle of the local brew. Jeff has an incredibly calm nature and a wicked sense of humor," it adds.

Why do AMERICANS find it so difficult to stay out of these dangerous countries? There must be some kind of "adventurous" gene running amok. Move over, Conda! Make way for the worst reality TV players

Kate Gosselin on "Dancing With the Stars," Marcel Vigneron of "Top Chef" and NaOnka Mixon of "Survivor: Nicaragua."

By Anna Chan and Ree Hines

There’s nothing like a reality TV villain to inspire bad words from good viewers. Just see the comments that Conda Britt -- who’s been busy making her eye-rolling, complaint-filled presence known on “The Biggest Loser” this season -- has brought out from some of our Facebook pals.

    “OMG I want to smack her.” “I can’t stand Conda.” “(She’s) a total b-----...”

    You get the idea.

Of course, Conda’s just the latest in a long line of reality TV contestants to get us gabbing. Long before she started bad-mouthing fellow players and backtalking her trainer (seriously, Conda, show Dolvett Quince some respect), plenty of other hot heads earned their spots on our worst-players-ever list.

Here are a few of our top contenders:

NaOnka Mixon (“Survivor: Nicaragua”): If you thought “King Troll” Russell Hantz and Jonny Fairplay were bad, all thoughts of those two men were banished once you witnessed NaOnka’s atrocious behavior on the show. She spouted hateful comments toward her fellow players, stole and hid food from the tribe, knocked over a woman who wore a prosthetic leg and more. Then, SHE QUIT THE GAME! And it didn’t end there. Even after her season aired, she refused to apologize for her actions, telling E! Online, “I played the game exactly the way I said I would at the beginning: I would lie, cheat and steal, I would be faker than faux fur, I would pretend to be your friend and stab you in the back. I lived up to that.” All righty, then.

    Follow @ReeHines
    Follow @Anna_Banana

Kate Gosselin (“Dancing With the Stars” season 10): When it comes to bad attitudes on “DWTS,” the reality TV mom takes the cake. (Although Bristol Palin does deserve an honorable mention.) The problems allegedly started even before the season did. Her pro partner, Tony Dovolani, reportedly complained that “she doesn’t listen and can’t take direction.” (Well, no wonder she moved like a mannequin on the dance floor.)  Her bossy and argumentative ways in rehearsals quickly got to the usually patient and encouraging pro, who was so fed up by week two he (temporarily) quit the show during their practice. During her long, five-week stint on the ballroom bash, Kate also put her whininess, combativeness and weepiness on full display, and even her most ardent supporters couldn’t stand to phone in their votes for her anymore to keep her dancing.

Marcel Vigneron (“Top Chef” season 2 and All-Stars): Some may remember Marcel as the master jerk, er, master cook who harangued his fellow contestants on the second season of “Top Chef,” while others might remember him as the returning jer--chef who baited his competition during the show’s all-star season. But no matter where you remember him from, you’re bound to remember his bad attitude and big ego -- and his foam.  Yes, the only thing more annoying than Marcel’s bleep-packed outbursts (which, FYI, are far more tolerable when set to music) was his commitment to smother otherwise appetizing meals in that always-unappealing foam.

Gretchen Jones (“Project Runway” season 8): OK, let’s just put aside her totally flabbergasting win (featuring granny panties ... granny panties, Michael Kors and Nina Garcia!) over the genuinely brilliant Mondo for the sake of this argument. Let’s stick to her -- as many recappers noted -- Grinch-like personality: She was bossy, controlling, whiny, conceited, belligerent, manipulative and, as fellow contestant April declared, two-faced. (April also called her Hitler, but even we admit that was going a tad too far.) And you know someone’s a total jerk when even the always charming and kind mentor Tim Gunn couldn’t stand her behavior anymore and gave her a smackdown in front of everyone.

Courtney Robertson (“The Bachelor” season 16): Of course, Gunn isn’t the only litmus test one can use to tell a true baddie. When Ellen DeGeneres, aka the current queen of daytime and the nicest of “American Idol’s” former nice guys, doesn’t like someone, well, that kind of says it all. And Ellen hasn’t been shy in expressing her dislike for Courtney. It’s Courtney’s in-it-to-win-it (at any cost) attitude that has many of the show’s fans (like Ellen) and former contestants (like Jennifer Fritsch) ready to see her go roseless and leave the show. “Bachelor” Ben Flajnik, on the other hand, seems perfectly content with the manipulative skinny-dipper.

    Follow @TODAY_Clicker

Jonathan Baker and Victoria Fuller (“Amazing Race,” “Fear Factor”): These two aren’t just the worst pair to ever pull up to a pit stop on “The Amazing Race”; they might just be the worst duo in reality TV history. Jonathan made his memorable “TAR” mark after he shoved Victoria -- yes, actually shoved his wife -- because she dared to pick up his discarded backpack and made them several seconds late to the mat. How did he console his weeping wife after that? By reminding her, “This is a race! This isn’t about compassion!” Sigh. But lest anyone worry about Victoria, an episode of “Fear Factor” later revealed that the (former) couple was in fact a perfect match. After some heckling from Jonny Fairplay, the former Playboy playmate punched the ex-“Survivor.” Not to be outdone, Jonathan ended up tussling with host Joe Rogan. Really.

Vicky Vilcan (“The Biggest Loser” season 6): Conda may be the “Loser” that has fans in a tizzy now, but it was once Vicky (with more than a little help from her in-game BFF Heba Salama) who earned all the ire. She was the contestant trainer Bob Harper called “Shakespearean” due to her over-the-top, manipulative ways. If there was drama to be stirred, she was ready and willing. See, Vicky was all about the game and winning it any way she could. (Well, she was also all about eye-rolling and sneering, but Conda may soon snag top “Loser” honors there.) That’s why Bob also called her the biggest game player in the history of the show.  As for what "Loser" fans called her, well, the less said about that the better.
