PSY and MC Hammer don Hammer pants to rock the AMAs with 'Gangnam Style'

    By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, TODAY
Nostalgia rang throughout Sunday night's American Music Awards, as the show celebrated its 40th anniversary with clips from past shows and other looks back. But the retro vibe was never louder than in the show's final act, when South Korean viral sensation PSY and 1980s-1990s rapper MC Hammer shared a stage -- and a fashion sense -- to perform PSY's hit, "Gangnam Style."

Dressed all in black, PSY took the stage first, sporting a version of the baggy "Hammer pants" MC Hammer made famous decades ago. Then MC Hammer himself joined in, though his outfit was all in white.

The billowy trousers didn't stop either musician from dancing up a storm, even trotting through the famed horse-riding style dance PSY tackles in the "Gangnam" video.

Hammer wasn't the only nostalgic act to take the AMA stage. Boy banders The Backstreet Boys, who celebrate their 20th anniversary next year, also made an appearance.

In contrast, the night's big winner, Canadian teen singer Justin Bieber, wasn't born until 1994, at which point the Backstreet Boys and MC Hammer were already well into their fame. Yet even Bieber himself sported a version of Hammer's baggy pants, along with a fashion twist of his own -- what appeared to be red slip-on shoes dotted with tiny black spikes. No one step on his foot!

Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift among winners at AMAs

    By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, TODAY
Justin Bieber, who's still just 18, claimed three awards at Sunday's American Music Awards in Los Angeles, including the ceremony's top prize, artist of the year. Bieber started off with the first award of the night, claiming the trophy for favorite pop/rock male artist.

Justin Bieber hugs his mom at the AMAs.

"This is for all the haters," the Canadian teen singer said while accepting the trophy, adding that many music observers thought he would only last for a couple of years on the music scene. "I feel like I'm gonna be here for a very long time," he said to cheers from the crowd.

Bieber later returned to the stage to collect the award for favorite pop/rock album for "Believe." Jenny McCarthy kissed the young artist so many times that he joked, "Wow, I feel violated right now."

He later claimed the artist of the year award, the top prize of the ceremony, and brought mom Pattie Mallette onstage with him.

The AMAs are chosen by fans who vote online for their favorites. This year's ceremony marks 40 years of the AMAs, and vintage clips of years past were mixed in with the new awards.

But the show featured numerous modern twists. Instead of presenters opening envelopes, each presenter read the winners from the screen of a Samsung Galaxy Note 2. "Modern Family" star Eric Stonestreet made a joke out of it, saying "It's not coming on," as he opened the device. But he quickly read the name of Taylor Swift, winner of the favorite country female artist honor.

When the AMAs began, viral videos didn't even exist, but two artists who've succeeded in that area were highlighted on the show.

South Korean rapper PSY took the stage to perform his goofy viral hit "Gangnam Style," and was joined by blast-from-the-past star MC Hammer.

Also, the best new artist award went to a woman whose song was paid homage in numerous viral video tributes this summer. Carly Rae Jepsen, whose hit "Call Me Maybe" was parodied and lip-synced by everyone from Olympic teams to Cookie Monster, claimed her first honor, beating out British boy band One Direction, among others.

Katy Perry was named best pop/rock female artist.

Nicki Minaj, decked out in a bright yellow floor-length gown, claimed the award for favorite rap or hip-hop album for "Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded." She changed into a cleavage-revealing black gown to claim her second trophy of the night, the award for favorite rap or hip-hop artist, when she added her hairdresser to the list of thank-yous.

Maroon 5 won for favorite band, duo or group, pop/rock.

Linkin Park took home the award for favorite alternative artist.

Luke Bryan won his first-ever AMA for best male country artist. Lady Antebellum took home the trophy for best country band, duo or group, making it the third time the group has claimed that award in three years.

Carrie Underwood won for favorite country album for "Blown Away."

Usher, whose live, laser-filled performance opened the show, won for favorite soul/R&B male artist. Beyonce won for favorite soul/R&B female artist, and Rihanna's "Talk That Talk" won for favorite soul/R&B album.

Adele won for favorite adult contemporary artist.

Shakira claimed the award for favorite Latin artist.

The first-ever electronic music award was handed out to David Guetta, who thanked the crowd via satellite from Rio, where he's touring. He said he shared the award with "all the DJs, producers, the promoters" and others in the electronic-music scene.

tobyMac won the award for favorite contemporary inspirational artist.

Stevie Wonder took the stage to present a tribute to legendary "American Bandstand" host Dick Clark, who passed away in April at age 82. Numbers included "Master Blaster (Jammin')," "My Cheri Amour" and "Sir Duke."

Best bets: 'Twilight' prepares to go out with a battle royale

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, NBC News

It's finally here. The vampire battle royale is about to begin as "Breaking Dawn Part 2" wraps up the mammoth "Twilight" saga with the fifth and final film. Also this week: Pixar's lively "Brave" hits home video, the American Music Awards rock out.

    Summit Entertainment

The final "Twilight" battle begins this week.

    TUESDAY: 'Brave' on DVD

It may not be top-level Pixar a la "Toy Story," but this year's "Brave," the story of a flame-haired Scottish princess whose fight with her queen mother turns bad, is definitely worth seeing.  Redheaded Merida is a dynamo, and her curls fly around like fireflies. The story drags a bit once a witch's spell changes the mother-daughter relationship, but this film is still a hit for kid-centered homes with parents dying for a new movie to watch 93,564,274,052 times in a row. (Out on DVD and Blu-ray Nov. 13.)

    FRIDAY: 'Breaking Dawn Part 2'

"Twilight" fans and foes, your moment is here. If you hate the uber-popular vampire saga, rejoice, because this is the last movie in the five-film series, and you soon won't have to hear about Team Edward and Team Jacob any more. If you're a fan, you're not reading this because you're already camped out on the street waiting to be the first on your block to see "Breaking Dawn Part 2." "Part 1" was family focused, with Bella and Edward finding first comes love, then comes marriage, then comes Bella with a half-vampire infant in a baby carriage. Renesmee is growing up fast, and her very existence has set up a giant vampire brawl for it all, with the royal Volturi coming from Italy to try and destroy the child. Good luck with that. (Opens Nov. 16.)

SUNDAY (NOV. 18): American Music Awards

The American Music Awards may not be the Grammys, but the live show will have plenty of star-studded moments anyway. Christina Aguilera will be among the performers, and Nicki Minaj and Rihanna top this year's nominees. There'll also be a new electronic music category introduced -- naturally, Skrillex is nominated. (Nov. 18, 8 p.m., ABC.)
