Anne Hathaway: Jokes about Oscar speech 'get to me'

    By Us Weekly

Anne Hathaway is a world-famous movie star -- and now an Oscar-winning actress -- but that doesn't mean she's immune to insecurity. In fact, she may be more vulnerable than anyone. Though the 30-year-old star has been praised in recent months for her spectacular performance in the epic movie musical "Les Miserables," she has also been criticized for what some believe is a false, cloying sense of earnestness in her awards show appearances.

Speaking to reporters backstage after winning the best supporting actress Academy Award on Feb. 24, Hathaway admitted to feeling hurt by the backlash. "It does get to me," she confessed. "But you have to remember in life that there's a positive to every negative and a negative to every positive."

PHOTOS: What the stars wore to the 2013 Oscars

"The miracle of the universe is that, as far as they know, there's 51 percent matter versus 49 percent anti-matter -- things tip in the scale of the positive," she continued. "So that is what I focus on."

PHOTOS: All the hottest Oscars afterparties

The star -- who beat out fellow nominees Sally Field, Jacki Weaver, Helen Hunt, and Amy Adams -- then went on to say that she tries not to let other people's criticism change the way she approaches her own relationships. "I live my life with love," she explained. "I live my life with compassion. I live my life hoping the best for absolutely everyone, no matter how they feel about me. And when you live that way, it's amazing how beautiful every day can be."

    PHOTOS: Anne's style evolution

Indeed, Hathaway's life has seemed especially charmed recently. Prior to her successful awards season run, the actress married Adam Shulman in September 2012. Addressing her now-husband as she accepted her Oscar on Sunday, she gushed, "By far the greatest moment of my life was the one when you walked into it. I love you so much."

Scarlett Johansson: 'I sang my little heart out' for 'Les Miserables' role

By Alexis L. Loinaz, E! Online

Scarlett Johansson dreamed the dream she'd star in a sweeping movie about a beloved stage musical. The 28-year-old actress reveals that she was up for the part of Fantine in "Les Misrables," the coveted role that eventually went to Anne Hathaway and which is now nabbing the star every acting award in sight.

    Universal, Getty Images

Anne Hathaway, left, as Fantine in "Les Miserables," and Scarlett Johansson.

Johansson spilled the beans to Broadway.com, which flat-out asked her whether she had auditioned for the part.

"Yes, I did. I sang my little heart out," she answers matter-of-factly.

Taylor Swift no longer cast in Les Misrables

When pressed whether the audition was terrifying, the actress says she didn't betray a hint of stage fright.

"No, are you kidding? The jazz hands kid inside me was just over the moon!" she explained.

Unfortunately, the audition didn't quite go as planned.

"I auditioned with laryngitis," she reveals. "I did everything I could to, like, not have laryngitis."

Anne Hathaway: My Les Misrables Performance Is "eh"

Nowadays, though, Johansson takes a more pensive -- and gracious -- approach to losing the role.

"I think, looking at the film now, there's no possible way I ever could have topped that performance [by Anne Hathaway]. It was perfect and I think fateful and meant to be," she offers.

"But, yes, the audition itself brought back so many memories of auditioning for 'Les Mis' for the young Cosette"-- role in the stage musical that she had apparently tried out for when she younger -- "and it was fun for me to revisit that."

Adam Lambert is not a fan of Les Mis' vocal performances

Interestingly, the rumor mill was indeed churning with reports that Johansson was up for a role in 'Les Mis' -- but not as Fantine.

Insiders had reportedly pegged her to be duking it out for the role of doomed ingnue Eponine with the likes of Taylor Swift and Evan Rachel Wood -- a part that eventually went to newcomer Samantha Barks.

And although Hathaway is considered the frontrunner for this year's best supporting actress Oscar, Johansson did also manage to score some Academy love for her vocal prowess -- albeit not for a Fantine-role-that-wasn't-meant-to-be: The actress lent her voice to the Oscar-nominated song "Before My Time," which is featured on the acclaimed climate-change documentary "Chasing Ice."

'Les Miserables' Anne Hathaway parody eager for Oscar consideration

    By Randee Dawn, TODAY contributor

Somebody likes her. Somebody really, really likes Anne Hathaway. Thus far, those someones include the Screen Actors Guild, the Hollywood Foreign Press and the Critics Choice voters, all of whom have given the co-star of "Les Miserables" serious accolades in the run-up to the Academy Awards (for which she's nominated as a best supporting actress for her role as the doomed Fantine).

    Watch on YouTube

Now you can add to the list another list of names: The filmmakers behind a hilarious, altered-lyrics parody of Hathaway's movie-stopping performance of "I Dreamed a Dream." (For those who haven't seen the film, Hathaway's Fantine belts out the tune in a single take shot that focuses solely on her face and shoulders.)

"For Your Consideration" stars Emma Fitzpatrick ("The Collection," "The Social Network"), who has been appropriately grunged up, wears a waif haircut and sports a pretty decent voice as she belts out lyrics like: "I coughed and wheezed and cried in every scene until I died." And, "I lost half my body weight but then they never did a wide shot."

It took eight takes to get the one they liked, Fitzpatrick told The Global Post, noting that she didn't originate the parody concept. The video's director, Alberto Belli, got writer Robert Hill to rewrite the lyrics, "and a mutual friend of ours knew I had short hair and could sing," she said.

And so she does, belting out later: "... And though I had to blow my nose, I did it all in one take, b----!"

"Everything builds really beautifully to that moment," said Fitzpatrick. "That line came flowing out of my mouth very naturally."

    Follow @ TODAY_ent

Despite poking a bit of fun at the performance, it's true: Fitzpatrick really likes Hathaway. "I thought her performance (in "Les Miserables") was awesome," she said. "As someone in the public eye, you have to be able to take a joke and laugh at yourself. There was no malicious intent."

The 85th Annual Academy Awards airs live Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. ET on ABC.

Jennifer Lawrence arrives for the Critics' Choice Movie Awards in Santa Monica, Calif., on Thursday.

    By Us Weekly

Another night, another awards show! Just one day after Hollywood's biggest stars attended the People's Choice Awards, many of the same actresses -- and a few new ones -- walked the red carpet at the 18th Annual Critics' Choice Movie Awards in Santa Monica, Calif., Thursday.

Best actress in an action movie winner Jennifer Lawrence stole the show in a black Prabal Gurung gown, which she paired with Jimmy Choo heels,  Chopard jewelry and a Roger Vivier bag. Presenter Nina Dobrev, meanwhile, rocked a fashion-forward emerald cocktail dress and black peep-toe heels.

Jessica Chastain accepts the award for best actress for "Zero Dark Thirty."

Emily Blunt looked glamorous in a cream-colored Miu Miu dress, Prada shoes and Graziela jewelry; she carried a JustFab purse. "Zero Dark Thirty"'s Jessica Chastain looked red hot wearing a Prada dress, Harry Winston jewels and Jimmy Choo shoes.

The girls from "Les Miserables" -- Anne Hathaway and Amanda Seyfred -- wore quite different looks. Best supporting actress winner Hathaway slipped into a slinky spaghetti strap dress, while Seyfried took a sartorial risk in a Marios Schwab dress, Roger Vivier shoes and Lorraine Schwartz jewelry.

"The Impossible"'s Naomi Watts wore a strapless Emilio Pucci gown that showed off her perfect physique, while "This Is 40"'s Leslie Mann selected a bubblegum pink Honor dress.

Anne Hathaway on struggles against typecasting: 'I had no grit, no sex appeal'

    By Access Hollywood

Anne Hathaway admits that although the world once thought of her as a sweet former Disney princess, she never felt like that herself.

“For a long time it was me and (my manager) against the world. I was seen as this bizarre-world good-girl cartoon that I in no way identified with -- very vanilla, very sweet, very accessible and not interesting,” she told Harper’s Bazaar UK, as excerpted by the Daily Mail. “I had no grit, no sex appeal.”

Anne may now be the kind of girl who wears bondage-style boots to her “Les Miserables” New York City premiere, but she admitted to feeling the heat in Hollywood when asked about her age -- 30.

“It doesn’t help that the new crop of girls is so gorgeous and so 22 years old. But I’m excited about it,” she said.

In addition to talking about her image and her age, the actress showed her softer side when talking about her husband, Adam Shulman, whom she wed in 2012.

“He walks into a room, and I light up. I can’t help it,” she said. “A few days into (filming "Les Miserables") I said ‘I’m having too much fun. I just want to play with you and I need to be really sad right now.’

Anne Hathaway: 'Les Miserables' premiere wardrobe malfunction an 'unfortunate incident'

    By Randee Dawn, TODAY contributor

In "Les Miserables," Anne Hathway had to bare her head and her soul, but before she and TODAY's Matt Lauer got around to talking about those experiences on Wednesday, he asked her about accidentally baring something else at the New York premiere of the film.

It appeared that she got some of her first photos taken as she exited her car on Monday -- sans underwear, and Hathaway had a very eloquent response to the question of her "wardrobe malfunction."

"It was obviously an unfortunate incident," she said. "It kind of made me sad on two accounts. One was that I was very sad that we live in an age when someone takes a picture of another person in a vulnerable moment and rather than delete it, and do the decent thing, sells it. And I’m sorry that we live in a culture that commodifies sexuality of unwilling participants, which brings us back to 'Les Mis,' that's what my character is, she is someone who is forced to sell sex to benefit her child because she has nothing and there's no social safety net."

Well said. Lauer and Hathaway went on to talk about the film, in which she has a small but pivotal role that required her to have her hair cut off, and lose 25 pounds so she could appear on the edge of death.

"It was scary," she admitted about losing her hair, particularly because it wasn't something she could prepare for. "There was nothing to do except just let it happen."

    Follow @ TODAY_ent

But while she has spoken in the past about how she lost the weight, Hathaway remained mum on TODAY -- but with a good, thoughtful reason. "I get nervous talking about it because I find that I don’t want to be seen as trying to glamorize it and there’s a lot of talk and a lot of pressure especially in young girls to lose weight, and ... I didn't do it to get hot, I did it to look like I was dying. Do not try this at home."

"Les Miserables" opens in theaters on Dec. 25.

Anne Hathaway's 'Les Mis' diet: Two pieces of oatmeal paste

    AP

    By Eric Kelsey, Reuters

LOS ANGELES -- Hollywood starlet Anne Hathaway credits a strict diet of dried oatmeal paste for helping her shed some 25 pounds for her role in the forthcoming big screen musical "Les Miserables."

"I had to be obsessive about it - the idea was to look near death," Hathaway told Vogue about preparing for her role as the consumptive prostitute Fantine in the musical version of Victor Hugo's classic 19th century French novel.

Hathaway, 30, told the December edition of the magazine, that she first lost 10 pounds to begin filming and then later dropped another 15 pounds by eating nothing but two thin pieces of oatmeal paste a day.

"Looking back on the whole experience - and I don't judge it in any way - it was definitely a little nuts," said "The Dark Knight Rises" actress. "It was definitely a break with reality, but I think that's who Fantine is anyway."

    Follow @TODAY_ent

Extreme body changes have become part of Hollywood lore, even factoring into the marketing of films. Natalie Portman received much publicity for dropping some 20 pounds for her Oscar-winning role as a ballerina in 2010's "Black Swan."

Jennifer Lawrence, who plays the famished star of the life-or-death thriller "The Hunger Games," made waves last week vowing never to diet for a role.

Hathaway said it was a rocky transition back into everyday life after filming.

"I was in such a state of deprivation - physical and emotional," she said. "When I got home, I couldn't react to the chaos of the world without being overwhelmed. It took me weeks till I felt like myself again."

Directed by Tom Hooper ("The King's Speech"), "Les Miserables" is scheduled to be released on Dec. 25 in the United States and is seen as a strong contender for Oscar nominations. The film version of the stage musical also stars Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe.

Russell Crowe bursts into song in 'Les Mis' trailer

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, NBC News

Russell Crowe's been active in music as well as acting for years, but now the new international trailer for the upcoming "Les Miserables" film lets fans check out Crowe's song-belting talents for themselves.

    Universal Pictures

    Russell Crowe in "Les Miserables."

The two-and-a-half minute trailer also features Anne Hathaway, Hugh Jackman, and Amanda Seyfried, who all star in the film along with Crowe. Jackman plays Jean Valjean, the Frenchman jailed for years for stealing bread for his starving family, and Crowe plays police Inspector Javert, who makes it his life's pursuit to track Valjean down.

In the trailer, Crowe, Jackman, Seyfried, Eddie Redmayne and Samantha Banks are all seen singing snippets of the cast song "One Day More," while Hathaway sings a bit of "I Dreamed a Dream." (Sorry "Seinfeld" fans, no George Costanza singing "Master of the House.")

"Les Miserables" hits theaters Dec. 25.

Anne Hathaway wedding photo money will support gay marriage

Anne Hathaway and Adam Shulman in New York in October 2011.

    By Rebecca Macatee, E! Online

Anne Hathaway is putting her money where her mouth is. The newlywed has long been an advocate for LGBT rights. And now, the 29-year-old actress is donating a portion of the sales from her wedding pictures to nonprofits advocating for marriage for same-sex couples, according to FreedomToMarry.Org.

Hathaway, who married Adam Shulman in Big Sur, Calif., on Sept. 29, will also reportedly donate some of the profits to the American Cancer Society, St. Jude Children's Research and The Girl Effect.

Get all the details on Anne and Adam's wedding!

The "Les Misrables" star and her husband worked with Freedom to Marry's National Engagement Party, helping to raise $500,000 for the Win More States Fund. (Proceeds were strategically channeled into the four states -- Maine, Maryland, Minnesota and Washington -- where marriage is on the ballot this Election Day.)

When Hathaway accepted an award from the Human Rights Campaign in 2008, she recounted what it was like to grow up with a gay brother. "In my household, being gay was, and is, no big deal," she said. "When my brother came out, we hugged him, said we loved him, and that was that."

    Anne Hathaway marries Adam Shulman

    INFphoto.com

Anne Hathaway and Adam Shulman at a private estate in Big Sur, calif.

    By Bruna Nessif, E! Online

Anne Hathaway's big day was Saturday. The "Dark Knight Rises" star wed fiance Adam Shulman in a private ceremony in the scenic redwood-studded coastal enclave of Big Sur, Calif., E! News has confirmed. As we previously reported, Hathaway was swathed in a gown specially designed by her friend Valentino Garavani.

The Look: Details on Hathaway's dress

The 29-year-old Oscar-nominated star found her Mr. Right, fellow actor Shulman, not long after discovering she had devoted years of her love life to Mr. Oh-So-Wrong. So in honor of their nuptials, let's take a look back at how the newlyweds' love affair began...

Five things you need to know about Anne Hathaway's hubby

January 2009: The public first caught wind of this new couple when Hathaway was spotted with Shulman at the opening gala of the Palm Springs International Film Festival, where Hathaway picked up the Desert Palm Achievement Award for "Rachel Getting Married." PDA was kept to a minimum, but there was a quick lip-lock (many more to follow in the coming years).

May 2010: Anne and Adam stayed off the radar for a bit, that is, until Shulman was spotted jacking some mural art from a Manhattan construction site. Don't worry, he returned it (after paparazzi got pictures of him taking it).

August 2011: Seriously, though, where was Adam Shulman hiding? Apparently, he was a little camera shy. "He's in there hanging out with my friends," Hathaway told us during the One Day premiere in New York City. Hey, more spotlight for his leading lady.

Anne Hathaway ties the knot with Adam in Big Sur

Nov. 28, 2011: And all of a sudden -- bam! -- this duo is engaged! Well, maybe not exactly "all of a sudden," since it had been three years, but we were happily surprised, nonetheless. Hathaway's rep confirmed the engagement to E! News, but the actress kept proposal details under wraps. Shucks!

Nov. 30, 2011: The ring! Anne showed off the unique creation made especially for her by Shulman and Kwiat jewelers. "We were honored to have the opportunity to work with Adam. He had a strong vision for what he wanted to present to Anne and we worked with him to make a custom design," a rep for the company told E! News.

December 2011: Speculation as to when the big ceremony would go down started swirling and leaned toward October 2012. Her rep denied such claims, but it clearly wasn't too far off.

Les Misrables' release date changed to Christmas

July 2012-September 2012: Remember how we said that these lovebirds kept their public displays of affection to a minimum in the beginning? Well, it seemed like all that changed once that diamond was on Anne's finger, because it became PDA all day, everyday, anywhere, any time. But it was super sweet.

Sept. 20, 2012: Most of the wedding plans have been kept hush-hush, except for one (pretty important) detail: the designer of Anne's wedding dress. And that just so happens to be Valentino Garavani. During the New York City Ballet's fall gala, the fashion icon told E! News he "did the dress" for Anne's nuptials. "She's a very good friend of mine," Valentino gushed. Like family? "Oh, yes. She's like my daughter!"

Sept. 29, 2012: The couple swap vows in Big Sur, Calif.

Let's take a stroll down memory lane with these newlyweds!

Anne Hathaway has shared her sorrow for those affected by the shooting at “The Dark Knight Rises” screening in Aurora, Colo., that killed 12 and left dozens hospitalized.

“My heart aches and breaks for the lives taken and altered by this unfathomably senseless act,” Hathaway, who plays Selina Kyle/Catwoman in the Christopher Nolan-directed film, said Sunday in a statement to Access Hollywood. “I am at a loss for words how to express my sorrow. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families.”

“Words cannot express the horror that I feel,” Bale said in his statement. “I cannot begin to truly understand the pain and grief of the victims and their loved ones, but my heart goes out to them.”

“Dark Knight” director Christopher Nolan also spoke out in the days following the massacre, expressing his sorrow for the victims and their families.

“The movie theater is my home and the idea that someone would violate that innocent and hopeful place in such an unbearably savage way is devastating to me,” Nolan said in a statement on Friday.

Anne Hathaway's purrfectly goofy reaction to meeting Batman: 'I giggled'

    By Randee Dawn, TODAY contributor

Becoming Catwoman for "The Dark Knight Rises" was one thing for Anne Hathaway, but meeting Batman (that is, Christian Bale) on the set for the first time, in full costume, was quite another.

As she explained to TODAY's Matt Lauer Thursday, she had a very un-Catwoman like reaction.

"That was cool.... A fantasy, indeed," she said. "I had a total fan moment the first time he spoke in the Batman voice. I just like kind of giggled, it was a little unprofessional but I couldn't help it."

    Follow @ TODAY_ent

But Hathaway was a pro around the set otherwise -- even if she tried to avoid looking at herself in the Catwoman costume, saying it was "a little too big and I thought that I might stress myself out if I focused too much about how it was looking." She attributes being able to do a good job to the director. "It would have been really scary if Chris Nolan had not been the one directing it.... You do this long enough, you have good moments, you have bad moments, good films, bad films, and it can make you a little gun shy about really letting go.... But if you can't trust Chris Nolan ... I don't know who you can trust."

Unfortunately, she did have to keep a closed mouth about virtually anything to do with the film's plot. She admitted that Catwoman did have "a little bit to do" with Batman returning to Gotham after a long absence at the start of the film, but refused to give Lauer any more clues beyond that.

"I can't send you a bat signal because they don't work in the daytime," she said. Meow!
