'Amelie,' 'Eternal Sunshine' fans should watch for 'Mood Indigo'

    Studio Canal

Audrey Tautou and Romain Duris star in "Mood Indigo."

By Cody Delistraty , NBC News contributor

“Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” might be one of the most inventive, mind-bogglingly fascinating films ever made. Michel Gondry, who directed and co-wrote the film, is a Frenchman keen on breaking molds and delivering his unfettered Technicolor imagination to the big screen. His films truly earn the “indie” moniker.

His latest, “Mood Indigo,” is based on Boris Vian’s 1947 novel “L’Ecume des Jours” (“The Foam of the Days”), a tale that explores the relationship between Colin, an affluent inventor of a pianocktail (an inexplicable combination of piano and cocktail), and Chloe, who gets sick when a water lily enters her lung. The only cure? To be always surrounded with fresh flowers -- an expensive, lifelong ordeal that could take Colin to the poorhouse.

Sound a tad twee? A bit contrived? Perhaps, but we’ll chalk it up to imagination. Besides, we have faith in the film, if for no other reason than the two leads, who are beautiful and imaginative in their own right. Audrey Tautou, known best to American audiences for her turn as the eponymous Montmartre waitress in “Amelie,” and the rugged Romain Duris, who starred in “The Beat That My Heart Skipped,” can play a wide range of romance and drama.

The trailer proves immensely charming with Colin professing to Chloe, “I feel like my whole life depends on this precise moment” in the first bit of dialogue. The vibrant color scheme follows Gondry’s other masterpiece, “The Science of Sleep,” and his imagination can be seen in the DJ-controlled ice rink, morphing room, and the cloud car contraption the characters float around in.

When the ever-popular "Ho Hey" from The Lumineers kicks in around the :50 mark, it all becomes rather irresistable.

We’d like to see a little more of Gad Elmaleh (“Midnight in Paris”), arguably France’s most popular funnyman, and Omar Sy (“The Intouchables”), but it’s tough to complain. While he directed the miserable “The Green Hornet” and the dull, rather humorless “Be Kind Rewind,” Gondry looks to have come up with another winner in “Mood Indigo.”

The film will be released in France on April 24.
