Stephen Colbert sets up Twitter account for President Clinton

    By Randee Dawn, TODAY contributor

Want to find Bill Clinton on Twitter? Well, as of Monday night you just have to type in @PrezBillyJeff, which is a dignified handle any former leader of the free world would be happy to own. And who can you blame -- er, credit -- for it? Stephen Colbert.

    The Colbert Report
Get More: Colbert Report Full Episodes,Indecision Political Humor,Video Archive

It was all part of Monday night's "Colbert Report," which was devoted entirely to Colbert's interview of former President Clinton, which had been pre-taped at Clinton's annual Global Initiative University (CGIU) meeting this past weekend. They tackled several serious subjects, including time management and American foreign assistance, but after a while Colbert discovered that while the former president may use Facebook, he does not use Twitter.

"I think I'm so, sort of insecure," he said. "What if you tweet and nobody tweets back?"

Colbert decided it was time to rectify this situation. Holding an iPhone, Colbert announced that he'd "taken the liberty" of opening a Twitter account for President Clinton, but the first obvious handles -- @PresidentClinton, @WilliamJeffersonClinton -- were taken. But @PrezBillyJeff "was available."

Chuckling, Clinton let Colbert send out his first tweet: "Just spent amazing time with Colbert. Is he sane? He is cool!" Colbert added the hashtag of #CGIU, and out it went into the world.

"Sir, welcome to the future," said Colbert, and shook his hand.

    Follow @ TODAY_ent

Alas, Clinton has not tweeted again as of this writing. It's not a "verified" account yet, and the description reads: "I am President William Jefferson BIlly Jeff Rodham Clinton. Stephen Colbert is my BFF." But he already has 39,666 followers -- and he's following one person.

Who would that be? @StephenAtHome, of course.

Bill Clinton documentary in works from Martin Scorsese, HBO

    Bill Clinton

    By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, TODAY

Famed director Martin Scorsese has teamed up with HBO to produce a documentary on former president Bill Clinton, the premium cable network announced Monday.

"President Clinton is one of the most compelling figures of our time, whose world view and perspective, combined with his uncommon intelligence, make him a singular voice on the world stage," HBO executives said in a statement.

The film will have the former president's cooperation. "I am pleased that legendary director Martin Scorsese and HBO have agreed to do this film,” Clinton said. “I look forward to sharing my perspective on my years as President, and my work in the years since, with HBO's audience.”

Since leaving office, Clinton has worked with his own William J. Clinton Foundation, which promotes and addresses international causes.

Scorsese has received numerous awards for his filmmaking, including an AFI Life Achievement Award in 1997, and a 2006 best director Oscar for "The Departed."

His previous work for HBO includes "Boardwalk Empire," for which he directed the series pilot and serves as executive producer; a 2011 documentary on Beatle George Harrison; and a 2010 documentary on Fran Lebowitz.

No release date or title have yet been given for the Clinton documentary.

Democratic rock stars -- Clinton and Springsteen -- stump for Obama

    By NBC's Andrew Rafferty
    Follow @AndrewNBCNews

PARMA, Ohio -- Two rock stars -- one a former Democratic president, the other a multi-platinum musician -- made an appeal for President Barack Obama to voters in battleground territory in northeast Ohio on Thursday.

Former President Bill Clinton joined forces with Bruce Springsteen for a high-profile appearance on Obama's behalf in the Cleveland area, a key region in a key battleground state that could make-or-break the president's bid for a second term.

Both former President Bill Clinton and Bruce Springsteen were in Parma, Ohio, Thursday to sing the praises of President Obama. NBC's Shawna Thomas reports.

"I've had, I don't know, 20-something jobs before I got elected president. But this is the first time in my life I ever got to be the warm-up act for Bruce Springsteen. I am qualified because I was born in the USA; and unlike one of the candidates for president, I keep all of my money here," Clinton told told the more than 3,000 packed into the gym at Cuyahoga Community College.

An additional 700 crammed into over-flow rooms.

The rally was Springsteen's first stop on the campaign trail this year, but just the latest for Clinton, who's emerged as one of Obama's top advocates, first at September's Democratic National Convention and later at campaign stops throughout the country. Clinton has been to Florida, New Hampshire and Nevada, and will travel tomorrow to Wisconsin.

Springsteen was set to travel to Iowa for a solo rally later in the afternoon.

Both Clinton and Springsteen played up Ohio's Midwestern tradition and the auto industry rescue initiated by Obama in 2009 in their speeches, mindful of the jobs preserved by the bailout of GM and Chrysler. ("I'm thankful GM is still making cars," Springsteen joked. "What else would I write about? I'd have no job!")

During his warm up act, which exceeded 30 minutes, Clinton blasted Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney for a lack of transparency, telling supporters they did not put up with the "hide and seek stuff" of the GOP candidate.  His budget, tax returns and details about his economic plan are things the former president said the Republican has been hiding.

"I love Ohio, it's an old school place," Clinton said. "We like our families, we like our communities, we value personal loyalty. When you were down, you were out and when your whole economy was threatened, the president had your back. You gotta have his back now."

Rocker Bruce Springsteen performs for a crowd of Obama supporters in Parma, Ohio.

At one point, in making the case against Romney, Clinton acknowledged that the economy was "not fixed," a comment on which the Republican nominee's campaign quickly pounced.

"We agree with former President Bill Clinton. The economy has not been fixed under President Barack Obama," said Romney spokesman Ryan Williams. "Today, more than 23 million Americans are struggling for work, poverty has increased and food stamps are at record levels. Mitt Romney believes we can do better by creating 12 million new jobs with higher take-home pay, cutting spending to put our nation on course for a balanced budget, and actually fixing our economy."

For his part, Springsteen has a well-established track record of supporting Democrats, and he posted a letter on his website Wednesday evening formally backing Obama.

While campaigning in Parma, Ohio, former president Bill Clinton draws comparisons to his eight years in office to the promise of four more years of Obama in the White House, if re-elected.

"This presidential election is different than the last one because President Obama has a four year record to run on. Last time around, he carried with him a tremendous amount of hope and expectations" he wrote. "Unfortunately, due to the economic chaos the previous administration left him with, and the extraordinary intensity of the opposition, it turned into a really rough ride. But through grit, determination, and focus, the President has been able to do a great many things that many of us deeply support."

In front of the crowd today, Springsteen said, "The future is rarely a tide rushing in. It's a long march, day by day. And Obama feels that in his bones for all 100 percent of us."

In a short acoustic set, Springsteen played some of his more recognizeable hits -- including his steel town dirge, "Youngstown," for the city just a short distance from Thursday's rally -- along with a jokingly-composed campaign song The Boss said he wrote at the president's request.

"Let's vote for the man who got Osama," went one line. Continuing about the second debate: "Smilin' Joe really brought the drama."

Bill Clinton wants George Clooney to play him in biopic

    Getty Images file

Clinton says George Clooney could play him in a biopic

    By Cody Delistraty, NBC News

The likeness may not be immediately apparent, but George Clooney is the best man in Hollywood to play Bill Clinton, according to the former president himself.

On Thursday, the 42nd president sat down on CNN’s “Piers Morgan Tonight” with guest host Harvey Weinstein and discussed a range of issues including marriage equality and the economy. But before diving into those tough topics, the film-studio head had a few questions dealing with his own strong suit: movies.

The former president’s favorite film? The Academy Award-winning 1952 Western “High Noon.”

“I bet I’ve seen it 25 or 30 times,” noted Clinton. “The only other movie like that in my life that I'd just see over and over and over again and never get tired of is ‘Casablanca.’ ”

    Follow @ msnbc_ent

    Then the harder question came.

“Now if I were to make a movie about your life, who would you want?” the Weinstein Co. co-chairman asked.  “And don't worry you can name any actor. We won't tell anybody.”

When Clinton deferred, Weinstein pitched Brad Pitt and Clooney. Clinton said no for Pitt (“too good looking”) but Clooney got the OK.

“He’s good looking, but, you know, you could put bulbous things on his nose and you could do makeup with him,” joked Clinton.

As for who would play his wife and current Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the ex-president didn’t falter. "Meryl Streep."

While it would take some clever makeup to transform Clooney, the Oscar-winner wouldn’t be the first to channel the once president. Dennis Quaid played him in the 2010 HBO film “The Special Relationship,” and Darrell Hammond frequently impersonated the then commander-in-chief on "Saturday Night Live." Clooney stays close to politics as well, having just come off a successful fundraiser for President Obama's re-election campaign and his critically acclaimed "Ides of March."

Perhaps Harvey Weinstein has thought about this match-up before.

Bill Clinton poses with porn stars at Monaco gala

    Twitter

Former president Bill Clinton poses with adult film stars Tasha Reign, second from left, and Brooklyn Lee, right, in Monte Carlo, Monaco on Wednesday.

    By Josh Grossberg, E! Online

Here's one constituency Bill Clinton probably doesn't mind mingling with. Across the pond for a "Night in Monaco" celeb-filled gala reception at the Casino in Monte Carlo, which was also attended by actors Diane Kruger, Joshua Jackson and Rose McGowan, the former POTUS posed for a spontaneous picture with two porn stars.

The adult film industry hotties flanking the 42nd president were 23-year-old Tasha Reign and 22-year-old Brooklyn Lee -- who won the 2012 AVN Award for Best New Starlet and subsequently tweeted about meeting Clinton -- plus an unidentified third woman.

But it was all for a good cause. The ex-president was in town to raise money for the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and his William J. Clinton Foundation.

Best Bets: 'Clinton' comes to TV in time for Presidents' Day

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, NBC News

Here's our look at the week ahead in entertainment.

    TV
President Bill Clinton's name will forever be tied to that of Monica Lewinsky, the former White House intern whose affair with the married president captured headlines worldwide in 1998. But not all of the four hours of "Clinton"coming up on PBS's "American Experience" focus on the scandal. Clinton's turbulent Arkansas childhood, his troubled marriage to now Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and the many complexities of his presidency are all covered. (Feb. 19 and 20, 9 p.m., PBS.)

Hollywood's biggest night comes to TV on Feb. 26 as the Academy Awards sweep on to your screen. Billy Crystal is hosting, though the comic was second choice -- comedian Eddie Murphy stepped down after his friend, Brett Ratner, who was producing the show, resigned after using a gay slur. If you're running an office pool, you'd do well to put money on "The Artist," "Hugo, and "The Descendants," all of which are expected to have a golden night. (Feb. 26, 7 p.m., ABC.)

    Movies
The Navy SEALs have perhaps never been more in the spotlight, thanks to the killing of Osama bin Laden and the recent rescue of two people held hostage by Somali pirates. The SEALs are the topic of "Act of Valor,"a new movie which mixes actors and actual SEALs, and shows the group fighting terrorists and rescuing a kidnapped CIA officer. (Opens Feb. 24.)

    DVD
Antonio Banderas gives a Latin lover-twist to the fairy-tale cat "Puss in Boots." The furry feline once played second fiddle to green ogre Shrek, but now he has his own movie. Puss re-teams with childhood pal Humpty Dumpty and falls for pretty Kitty Soft Paws as they pursue the magical beans and golden eggs of fairy-tale legend. (On DVD Feb. 24.)

There's no need to fear! "Underdog" is here! The classic cartoon featuring the superhero dog and heroine Sweet Polly Purebred is now out on DVD in a nine-disc DVD set. It's the first time all three seasons of the cult favorite are together in a box set. (On DVD Feb. 21.)
