Teri Shields, Brooke Shields' mother and ex-manager, dies at 79

By William Yardley, The New York Times

Teri Shields, who began promoting her daughter, Brooke, as a child model and actress when she was an infant and allowed her to be cast as a child prostitute in the 1978 film “Pretty Baby,” died on Wednesday in Manhattan. She was 79.

Her death followed a long illness related to dementia, a spokesman for Brooke Shields said.

Teri Shields was a single mother when she began managing her 11-month-old daughter, finding her a job in an advertisement for Ivory soap. When Brooke was 10, she arranged for a photographer to take nude pictures of her. Then came “Pretty Baby,” a Calvin Klein jeans campaign when she was 15 and more movies.

Ms. Shields said later that she had been like any parent who tries to do what she thinks is best for her child -- and that in this case it seemed wise to take advantage of her daughter’s striking beauty. She also noted Brooke’s acquiescence.

“Fortunately, Brooke was at an age where she couldn’t talk back,” she told the television interviewer Bill Boggs a few years after “Pretty Baby” was released in 1978.

In that interview Teri Shields said that people who accused her of exploiting her child were jealous. She also spoke bluntly about her daughter’s appeal.

“They see total innocence, which is totally there,” she said, as Brooke sat beside her. “And two, they have the sexy child too, they have the sexy person -- that appeals to them.”

Mr. Boggs interrupted: “Yeah, it’s the forbidden fruit.”

Teri Shields responded, “Yes, and yet it’s all wrapped up in one, and that is really appetizing.”

Theresa Anna Lillian Schmon was born on Aug. 11, 1933, in Newark. She worked as a hairstylist, a makeup artist for Lord & Taylor and a model, according to a statement from Brooke Shields. She married Francis Alexander Shields in 1964, and Brooke was born the next year.

“It was then that Teri found her career” as her daughter’s manager, Brooke Shields wrote.

Teri Shields and her husband divorced when their daughter was a few months old. Besides Brooke, her survivors include a sister and two granddaughters.

Brooke Shields, who is now 47, went on to have an enduring acting and modeling career. She would not comment on her relationship with her mother for this obituary, but she has said in past interviews that it became strained when she began managing her career herself in her 20s. She has also described her mother’s troubles with alcohol.

“I grew up in an alcoholic household,” Brooke Shields told The New York Times in 1994. “I’m the caretaker who wants to make everything better, and you can just do that for so long, or so I’ve been told.”

Interviewed for that same article, Teri Shields said she could not discuss her daughter’s professional plans.

“Talk to Brookie,” she said. But she added, “Brookie doesn’t know what she’s talking about.”

This story originally appeared in The New York Times: Teri Shields dies at 79; mother and manager.

Is that Brooke Shields smoking pot with Bad Brains singer H.R.? Her rep says no

    By Brandi Fowler, E! Online

Call this one a case of mistaken identity. The Twitterverse went wild after a scanned old photo surfaced on Twitter with the caption "here is a photo of brooke shields smoking pot with h.r."

A screengrab of the image on Twitter that had people talking this week.

Find out why Brooke Shields was walking with a cane at the Met Gala

In the snap, that appears to have been taken years ago, a woman who bears a resemblance to Brooke Shields is sitting next to lead singer H.R. of seminal hardcore band Bad Brains and is smoking from a pipe.

Bad Brains' manager even went on to tell Gawker, "It's her. This would be from 1983. Hair length, and H.R. missing that tooth he knocked out hitting a huge stage divider pole at the Reggae Lounge. Brooke would have been around 18, maybe still a Ford model."

But, a rep for the former "Lipstick Jungle" star, denied that Shields is the woman in question puffing away, telling E! News, "That is definitely NOT her."

According to the Daily Mail, Shields told Nylon back in 2000 her mom turned her off to the idea of using drugs, saying, "I don't know if it's reverse psychology, but my mom would say, 'You wanna do drugs? Fine. Do them. Just do me a favor. Let me do 'em with you. I'll get you the best stuff. This way I know you're not going to die.' And the whole thing was so unappealing to me."

Why is Brooke Shields walking with a cane?

Yikes, looks like Brooke Shields might have broken something! The gorgeous star attended last night's star-studded Met Costume Institute Gala decked out in an elegantly draped J. Mendel gown that highlighted her va-va-voom figure.

But the fashion accessory that made the biggest statement wasn't her sleek clutch, or her sparkly Tiffany &Co. baubles.

    It was ... a cane?!

What on earth happened to Shields to leave her all gimpy at the biggest fashion party of the year?

E! News' very own Giuliana Rancic caught up with the 46-year-old actress turned Broadway vet on the red carpet, where Shields revealed that she had torn her meniscus in her knee while recently performing as Morticia Addams in the Broadway hit The Addams Family.

Of course, ever the pro, Shields didn't let a little thing like an injury sideline her, saying it was "not a big deal, it's inconvenient." She did, however, quip that the steps of the Met Museum's famously grand staircase "don't help" her much.

Good thing she had a great sense of humor about it all, cracking to Rancic, "You know what? We'll do anything for fashion!" (Well, at least she was comfortable: The star wore flip-flops with her gown!)

Shields took over the role of Morticia from Bebe Neuwirth last June, and even extended her run, which was supposed to have ended in October, through the show's final performance on Dec. 31.

"I am having the time of my life playing Morticia with this wonderful company of actors," Shields said back then in a statement. "Morticia is such a delicious role and The Addams Family is such a fantastic and iconic piece of entertainment that I just couldn't resist the invitation to extend."

Apparently, she also couldn't resist the invitation to attend the Met Gala, gimpy walk be damned. What a trouper!
