Tim McGraw gives military family a new house on 'Cake Boss'

    TLC

Tim McGraw and Buddy Valastro greet Marine Chris Chaput on "Cake Boss."

    By Drusilla Moorhouse, TODAY contributor

When it comes to generous gestures, Tim  McGraw really takes the cake. Monday night's new episode of "Cake Boss" is dedicated to the country superstar's partnership with Operation Homefront, a nonprofit organization devoted to helping members of the military and their families.

As Tim's mom Betty (aw!) explains to baker Buddy Valastro in the preview clip below, her son has been awarding a house to a military family during each stop of his 2012 tour.

Before his performances, Tim hosts a meet-and-greet before presenting the keys to the mortgage-free house to his surprised guests. At a New Jersey performance, the Grammy winner enlists Buddy to design a cake for the event.

Buddy incorporates the theme with Tim's new single, "Truck Yeah," constructing a cake house in the back of the flatbed truck.

"This is not just a cake," Tim announces to injured Marine Chris Chaput and his wife, Roseanna. "This represents a real house that you guys are gonna get."

"It means we can have a baby now," Roseanna says while fighting back tears. "We just got married and have been waiting to get a house so we can have a baby."

Talk about having your cake and eating it, too!

"Cake Boss" airs Mondays at 10 p.m. on TLC.

'Cake Boss' star Buddy reveals his mom has ALS

"Cake Boss" Buddy Valastro and mom Mary.

    By Anna Chan, TODAY

Instead of an amazing and tasty creation, "Cake Boss" Buddy Valastro shared some unfortunate news Tuesday. The star of TLC's program about Carlo's Bake Shop in New Jersey revealed that his 64-year-old mother, Mary, has been diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease.

"I can confirm that my mother Mary – the heartbeat of the Valastro family and Mama to all of Carlo's Bakery – has been diagnosed with ALS," Valastro said in a statement first shared with People magazine. "She is tackling it with the strength and determination she always shows, and the entire family is in this together, fighting for her. We'd like to thank all of our fans for the love and prayers – it means a great deal to all of us."

TLC told TODAY.com that the network "shares its support with the family."

Mama Valastro kept the family bakery running after her husband died in 1994, and retired in 2010. She was a regular on "Cake Boss" up until her retirement, which was featured on the season three premiere. Though she's no longer featured regularly, Mary still makes appearances on the program.

TLC told us that the show's summer finale, airing July 23, will focus on Mary's illness and her family's reaction to it. The network has not yet decided whether she'll be featured more or less than in the past few seasons of the show.

"Cake Boss" airs on TLC at 9 p.m. on Mondays.

'Cake Boss' issues apology after transgender prank

    TLC

    "Cake Boss" Buddy Valastro

    By Ree Hines, TODAY contributor

Monday night's episode of "Cake Boss" featured more than the usual frosting-covered fun at Carlo's Bakery. The "Boss" himself, Buddy Valastro, pulled an unexpected prank on the always-gullible "Cousin Anthony" Bellifemine, but the joke fell flat for the transgender reality star at the center of it and for many viewers.

Carmen Carrera, who some might remember from "Ru Paul's Drag Race," was brought on the show to flirt with Cousin Anthony, and she even placed a peck on his cheek. Anthony wasn't aware that Carmen was transgender, but Buddy was.

"Anthony, right now, is on top of the world," Buddy said on the show. "He don't know what's coming, baby."

That's when Buddy made his big announcement: "That's a man, baby!"

But according to Carmen, that's not how the scene was meant to play out.

"LET ME MAKE THIS VERY CLEAR! LISTEN UP PEOPLE! I signed on to do this episode of 'Cake Boss' to promote EQUALITY," she posted to her Facebook page. "Transgender women are just as beautiful as biological woman and should be respected for that. The 'reveal' was never meant to be a 'Jerry Springer, 'THATS A MAN'...' kind of thing. I was promised that it wasn't going to be that way. I was lied to."

According to a statement issued to the Los Angeles Times, TLC has pulled the episode from rotation following complaints from Carmen and her supporters. As for the "Boss," he's issued an apology.

"I've been trying to connect with Carmen and apologize to her directly, but also think I owe an apology to the entire LGBT community," Buddy wrote in a message to his Facebook fans. "It was absolutely not my intention to upset or offend her, or anyone within the community, and I was wrong to use the words I did. I am a supporter of gay rights and equality, and while I regret this situation and my choice of words, I am thankful to have received this feedback and the opportunity to learn from this mistake. I hope that Carmen accepts my sincere regrets."

Even Cousin Anthony got in on the mea culpa action, tweeting"I apologize for my ignorance. @Carmen_Carrera is a beautiful woman & I respect her greatly. No harm intended. My apologies."

'Cake Boss' creates life-size cake of Betty White

    TLC

Betty White poses with a life-size cake of herself created by "Cake Boss" Buddy Valastro at her Friars Club roast on May 16.

    By Anna Chan, TODAY

Betty White may have been the butt of jokes at her Friars Club roast on Wednesday, but not all of it was hard to swallow. A sweet cake was commissioned for the special event, but not just any cake.

The club asked "Cake Boss" Buddy Valastro to create a life-size treat of the 90-year-old actress -- and he did it in 24 hours. The vanilla cake stood at 5'2", was covered in modeling chocolate and depicts White with a little silver fox in her left hand.  The bottom of the cake featured the club's motto: "We only roast the ones we love."
