Courtney Love takes on Jay-Z's '99 Problems' at Sundance

    By Kurt Schlosser, NBC News

Courtney Love took on Jay-Z's "99 Problems" during an appearance at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, last week. And as her own best critic, the rocker warned before starting the song: "It's so genius, it either sucks, or it's genius."

A video of the Jan. 22 performance at the Star Bar has surfaced on YouTube. The former Hole frontwoman and widow of Kurt Cobain puts her own grungy, acoustic spin on the hip-hop classic. And she doesn't take any lyrical shortcuts, singing the N-word a couple times during the 3-minute video.

Comments varied on the YouTube clip, with some taking offense to her use of the N-word and others defending her right to cover the song as it was written.

"She is a very very serious musician ... she's got a great voice and is an incredible writer. Unfortunately (but understandably) people find it hard to look past the way she's portrayed by the media," user dubpsychosis88 wrote.

"Courtney has got to be the worst pop star along with Taylor Swift ... utter crap," wrote Micah Femino.

Hole formed in 1989 and put out the debut album "Pretty on the Inside" in 1991. The band's second album, "Live Through This," came out four days after Cobain committed suicide in Seattle in 1994. The band released "Celebrity Skin" in 1998, and broke up in 2002. Love released a solo album, "America's Sweetheart," in 2004, and she re-formed Hole for 2010's "Nobody's Daughter" with a new lineup of musicians.

Love told Rolling Stone last fall that she teamed with ex-Smashing Pumpkins guitarist James Iha for a single called "This is War," possibly salted for a Feb. 7 release.

Love has long been a magnet for rock 'n' roll attention, from her outspoken Twitter musings to her ongoing feud with the surviving members of Nirvana. She's also had a contentious relationship with her daughter, Frances Bean Cobain.

But in Park City, she put a clever twist on the end of her cover: "I got 99 problems, but being a bitch ain't one."

Check out the video below, but be warned that it contains profane language.

Courtney Love: No Nirvana musical is in the works, despite rumors

    By Rolling Stone

    Courtney Love.

Courtney Love has shot down rumors of a Nirvana musical, according to The Observer. Addressing murmurs that Love's sometime co-manager Sam Lufti -- who recently had his lawsuit against Britney Spears thrown out due to insufficient evidence -- would be leading the musical with her blessing, Love made clear that won't be happening. "There will be no musical," said the rocker. "Sometimes it's best just to leave things alone."

Though Love has been talking to director Brett Morgan about a possible film about her life since Kurt Cobain, she's taking a hard stance against the commercial use of Nirvana's work and legacy. "I said yes once -- to Baz Luhrmann to use eight seconds of 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' in 'Moulin Rouge,'" said Love. "But he wasn't allowed to use it in the marketing. I didn't get the part in the film. I was so pissed off I made up the term to 'Baz' somebody."

The singer, who had daughter Frances Bean with Cobain, has vowed to keep as much control as she can over her late husband's work.

"I got so bullied into selling what I sold. I regret it so much. I'm never selling the rest of it," she said.

Courtney Love lets Lana Del Rey know 'Heart-Shaped Box' is about her vagina

    By Rolling Stone

Last week in Sydney, Australia, Lana Del Rey gave a delicate rendition of Nirvana's 1993 hit "Heart-Shaped Box," stripping the track of Kurt Cobain's grit in favor of a lighter version. Monday, Courtney Love reached out to Del Rey on Twitter to give her an unsolicited rock history lesson. Though the tweets have since been deleted, Stereogum took a few screenshots before their removal.

"You do know the song is about my Vagina right? 'Throw down your umbilical noose so i can climb right back,' umm," wrote Love to Del Rey. "On top of which some of the lyrics about my vagina I contributed. So umm next time you sing it, think about my vagina will you?"

Earlier this month, Love was hit with a lawsuit from a former assistant over "despicable conduct." It followed reports from last month revealing she had also been sued by her former lawyers over unpaid legal bills.

Shocker alert: It's possible that working for Courtney Love is no picnic.

The predictably unpredictable Hole frontwoman was sued Wednesday by a former assistant who claims that, during the year she worked for Love, the singer "acted with an improper and evil motive amounting to malice or despicable conduct."

Evil seems like a strong word....

According to the lawsuit obtained by E! News, plaintiff Jessica Labrie was hired by Love in June 2010 as an administrative assistant and "forensic research aide" for $30 an hour -- and it was downhill from there.

Among Labrie's allegations against the "Pretty on the Inside" artist, per the complaint: Love had her working 60-hour-plus weeks without paying overtime, she asked her to hire a computer hacker, she directed her to send fake legal correspondence, she never followed up with a promise to pay for Labrie's Yale tuition, she never paid her any promised bonuses and she didn't secure her a promised job on the set of a Nirvana biopic.

    The list goes on.

Labrie also states that, in addition to repeatedly asking for the money she was owed, she had voiced concerns to Love about the ethical and legal implications of the questionable things the artist allegedly asked her to do.

A rep for Love hasn't yet commented on the suit and its singular laundry list of accusations.

On Jun 27, 2011, the suit continues, Labrie was forced to resign with Love still owing her more than $2,000.

The plaintiff says the situation caused her headaches, insomnia, anxiety and depression. She is seeking unspecified damages for alleged wrongful termination, failure to pay wages and overtime, negligent misrepresentation, breach of contract and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

Courtney Love’s interest in Kurt Cobain fades as she reportedly loses control of his image rights

Jemal Countess / Getty Images file

    Courtney Love

    By Courtney Garcia, msnbc.com contributor

One of Courtney Love’s primary bartering points in Nirvana-related debacles may be gone, as she has reportedly lost control over late husband Kurt Cobain’s image rights.

According to The Fix, Love’s 19-year-old daughter, Frances Bean Cobain, has obtained control over the publicity rights for Kurt’s name, likeness and appearance, an arrangement that may have resulted from Love’s ongoing financial woes.

Documents acquired by The Fix show that "Love agreed to step down as acting manager of End of Music LLC — the business entity responsible for generating cash from Cobain’s publicity rights — once she’d received a $2.75 million loan from Frances’ trust fund in 2010." Frances also has the final word in business agreements, though Love remains a company member.

The loan was transferred to Love in December of that year, and, until she pays it back, Frances and her advisers are in charge of the considerably valuable assets. Jonathan Faber, a lawyer who once represented Kurt’s estate, told The Fix, “Publicity rights are potentially worth a fortune…They amount to the intellectual property rights."

The Hole singer hasn’t shied away from asserting her influence over the entitlement either. In 2009, she threatened to sue Activision for their depiction of Kurt in Guitar Hero 5, which Love found to be "vile."

"We are going to sue the s*** out of Activision," Love told U.K.’s The Guardian. "‘We' being the Trust, the Estate, the LLC, the various LLCs, Cobain Enterprises … For the record, this Guitar Hero s*** is breach of contract on a bully’s part and there will be a proper addressing of this and retraction."

This was before she and Frances had it out, however, and Love was pushed to the periphery. Frances filed a restraining order against her mother in 2009, citing that Love killed her cat and was ceaselessly using drugs, often falling "asleep in her bed while she is smoking." Love lost custody of Frances that year, and the 17-year-old moved in with her grandmother. In 2010, Love was removed from Frances’ trust fund, though reportedly arbitration continues over a stash of Kurt’s belonging, including paintings, musical equipment and pajamas, which, as it stands, Frances owns a 40 percent share of and Courtney has around 60 percent.

Sentimentality doesn’t seem to matter much to Love though, as The Fix reported in February that the singer was planning to auction the estate for as much $100 million. She previously sold off a large stake in the Nirvana frontman’s music publishing, signing away 25 percent of the work for a reported $50 million in 2006.

And where more gripping legal matters end, Love and her daughter have extended their feud through Twitter. After Love tweeted accusations that Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl was “hitting on” Frances in April, also commenting he was “sexually obsessed with Kurt,” Frances responded by saying, "Twitter should ban my mother."

She additionally told E! News, "While I'm generally silent on the affairs of my biological mother, her recent tirade has taken a gross turn. I have never been approached by Dave Grohl in more than a platonic way. I'm in a monogamous relationship and very happy."

Appropriately, Love responded via Twitter. "Bean, sorry I believed the gossip.. Mommy loves you."

Frances Bean Cobain: 'Twitter should ban my mother'

Courtney Love sure seems to want everyone to ache like she aches.

Unlike most of her missives, her latest Twitter rant -- this one claiming that Dave Grohl hit on her teenage daughter -- has not gone ignored by Frances Bean Cobain, the alleged object of the Foo Fighter's affection.

Let's just say, Kurt Cobain's kid didn't say "nevermind."

"While I'm generally silent on the affairs of my biological mother, her recent tirade has taken a gross turn," Frances said in a statement to E! News. "I have never been approached by Dave Grohl in more than a platonic way. I'm in a monogamous relationship and very happy.

    "Twitter should ban my mother."

As of press time, that hadn't happened.

But Grohl, too, had swatted away Love's tweets, including the comment, "I'm not mad at [Frances], him I am about to shoot, dead."

"Unfortunately Courtney is on another hateful Twitter rant," Grohl said in a statement. "These new accusations are upsetting, offensive and absolutely untrue."

Love tweeted last night from her locked-and-private Twitter account, @Cbabymichelle, that she heard Grohl "had his hands all over" her daughter and was "OBSESSED" with his late bandmate's family. (Gawker posted screengrabs of the NSFW rant.)

Frances Bean, meanwhile, is dating -- and quite possibly engaged to -- The Rambles frontman Isaiah Silva.

Love lost custody of Frances when her daughter was 17 and the teen moved in with her paternal grandmother.

    By Rolling Stone

Courtney Love has accused Dave Grohl of attempting to seduce her 19-year-old daughter, Frances Bean Cobain, Gawker reports. The Hole singer made the accusations on her private Twitter account last night, claiming that her estranged daughter's roommate informed her that the Foo Fighters frontman "hit on Frances." Grohl is, of course, the former bandmate of Frances' father, Kurt Cobain, and has known her since she was an infant.

    Follow @ msnbc_ent

In a series of subsequent tweets, Love threatened Grohl and speculated on his "pathology," noting that Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins resembles Cobain and is in the "submissive drummer position" in the band, and that he named his daughter Violet, which happens to be the name of one of Love's biggest hits. She later declared that Grohl is "sexually obsessed" with Kurt, relaying information from a driver who claimed that Grohl had "his hands all over" Frances in his car.

This is hardly the first time Love has attacked Grohl in public. Back in November, the singer launched into a tirade against him at a festival in Brazil prompted by her outrage at a fan carrying a poster of Cobain in the audience.

Love's private Twitter account, @cbabymichelle, is locked from the public, but Gawker has posted a screen capture collecting all of her tweets from last night.

Is Courtney Love starting a war against The Muppets?

    Disney

    Jason Segel and The Muppets.

    By Courtney Garcia

Courtney Love is starting a war with The Muppets now? The provocative lead singer of Hole, widow of deceased Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, reportedly is preparing to battle Kermit, Miss Piggy and their affiliates for allegedly using the rock band’s classic hit, “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” in their 2011 film release, “The Muppets.”

According to TMZ, Love has control over use of Cobain’s music for commercial purposes, and never gave approval for inclusion in the movie.

It may not be a slam-dunk case for the singer, however. The report also mentions Love sold a portion of her rights, along with the power to distribute Nirvana's catalog, to music publisher Primary Wave Music.

Love held her rights to the Nirvana catalog tightly since Cobain’s death in 1994, yet her own financial woes have significantly loosened up her stance. In 2006, she sold 25 percent of the work for $50 million, and MSN reports that in 2011, she was considering selling off the remainder" after becoming convinced the royalty payments she receives are ‘cursed.’”

The value of the remaining catalog is estimated to be worth $162 million.

Nevertheless, the rocker’s vengeance on the Muppets may not be the best use of her time and legal fees. Surviving Nirvana members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic evidently both gave their blessings to the production. Love has gone to court with them in the past over use of previously unreleased Nirvana material, but settled.

And it appears that the world is on the side of The Muppets.

“Are you kidding me?” writes Robert on TMZ. “Cobain actually had a sense of humor. He enjoyed the Weird Al cover and I'm sure he would have liked this.”

Tweets writer Matt Parker, “Courtney Love has never been known for picking her battles well, but The Muppets!?”

Frances Bean blamed mom Courtney Love for death of pets

    Kevork Djansezian / AP

Courtney Love poses with her daughter, Frances Bean, in this May 25, 2005, file photo.

    By Anna Chan, TODAY

It's no secret that Frances Bean Cobain didn't exactly have the glamorous, easy childhood that kids of celebrities are often afforded. Her father, Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, committed suicide when she was still a toddler, and mom Courtney Love publicly battled addiction.

And when Francis Bean was 17, she filed a request for a temporary restraining order against her mother after a fight. Now, her sealed 2009 deposition has come to light in a new e-book from TheFix.com in partnership with Barnes and Nobles' Sterling Publishing.

In a sworn statement to the court published in "Courtney Comes Clean," Frances Bean claimed that her mother was not only hooked on prescription drugs, but that the Hole frontwoman's issues led to the death of their cat and dog.

"She basically exists now on ... Xanax, Adderall, Sonata and Abilify, sugar and cigarettes," the teenager told the judge of her mother, according to the documents obtained by TheFix. Frances Bean also said that their dog died after ingesting Love's pills.

As for her cat? According to Frances Bean's deposition, it passed away because it became entangled in trash, boxes and piles of fabric.

The formerly unpublished documents also revealed that she claimed her mother once dragged her to a boyfriend's house in the middle of the night, screamed from outside the home and "threatened to burn the house down," all while the man's children were inside.

Reps for Love have not yet responded to a request for comment.

    Follow @ msnbc_ent

The judge in the case granted Frances Bean's request for the restraining order, and the teen was placed in a temporary guardianship with her paternal grandmother and an aunt.

Despite her famous and troubled parents, Frances Bean has maintained a low profile and has appeared in the spotlight sporadically. She recently appeared in portraits by Rocky Schenk and Hedi Slimane. She also became engaged to musician Isaiah Silva late last year.
