Drew Barrymore shows off new baby girl Olive

    By Kurt Schlosser, TODAY

If your appreciation for Drew Barrymore dates back to when she was practically a baby herself in 1982's "E.T.," it's fun to see her on the cover of People magazine holding her own child.

    People.com

    Drew Barrymore and daughter Olive.

"It's the coolest moment of my life!" reads a quote from the actress beneath a picture of 9-week-old Olive, face to face with her new mom. The baby girl was born on Sept. 26.

Barrymore, 37, who married art consultant Will Kopelman in June, tells People no one prepared her for the responsibility she'd feel after her daughter was born. "You have the highest highs and yet you're facing the biggest fear of, 'How do I keep someone alive?'"

Barrymore admitted to Jay Leno in February that she hopes to have more children. "We'll start with one," she said. "See how it goes and if we could be so blessed ... that would be wonderful."

Drew Barrymore tells Ellen DeGeneres why she named her baby Olive

    By Rebecca Macatee, E! Online

    The Ellen DeGeneres Show

    Drew Barrymore.

Drew Barrymore picked out her daughter Olive's name when she was still in the womb. On Thursday's episode of "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," Will Kopelman's wife explained that their 10-week-old baby girl was named for her size at the time.

Cute! Drew and Will step out with baby Olive

"I never would have guessed that would have been the name," the 37-year-old actress said. "But I was reading a book with my husband. I was three months pregnant and they said your baby is the size of an olive, and that was it. We never looked back."

"It could have been the size of a peanut or a grapefruit," Ellen quipped.

"It could have been," Drew said, laughing. "It was a lot fruit and vegetables."

"It could have been named kidney bean?" Ellen asked.

Not quite. "Kidney's not such a fun name," Drew answered.

Drew explained that she and Will were "shopping a few (names) as all people do who are so blessed to get to do this. And then once the light was shed, there was just no turning back."

Coincidentally, Olive is the name of an animated reindeer Drew voiced in the 1999 TV special Olive the Other Reindeer. Back in 1995, the Big Miracle star, who was then dating Hole musician Eric Erlandson, told Rolling Stone she wanted to name her future daughter Ruby Daffodil.

We're definitely glad she went with Olive.

Will Kopelman and Drew Barrymore, seen here in May, now have a daughter, Olive.

Drew Barrymore is now a mom. The actress gave birth to daughter Olive Barrymore Kopelman on Sept. 26, Life & Style Weekly reports.

A representative for Barrymore told the magazine that little Olive was "healthy, happy and welcomed by the whole family."

Barrymore wed art consultant Will Kopelman in June. She was previously married to Jeremy Thomas and later to Tom Green.

Acting is in Barrymore's blood. She's the granddaughter of legendary actor John Barrymore, and was just 5 when she made her movie debut in "Altered States." Her most famous childhood role may be that of Gertie in the 1982 hit "E.T.," filmed when Barrymore was just 7.

As for the baby's name, Barrymore voiced the lead character in the 1999 Christmas special "Olive, the Other Reindeer."

Is your favorite child star a success or a mess?

    Mario Anzuoni / Reuters

Actress Chloe Grace Moretz poses at the Women In Film Crystal + Lucy Awards in Beverly Hills, Calif., on June 12.

    By Cody Delistraty, NBC News

Although she couldn’t take part in the champagne and cocktails, 15-year-old Chloë Grace Moretz was fêted at a cocktail soirée at the Sunset Tower Hotel in West Hollywood on Monday. The actress, who will play the title role in MGM’s upcoming “Carrie” remake, was awarded the 2012 Women in Film, Max Mara Face of the Future Award, which has been given to Zoe Saldana, Elizabeth Banks, Ginnifer Goodwin, Emily Blunt and Maria Bello in past years.

Moretz, who routinely sports Chanel, Pucci and Dolce & Gabbana, is a fashion icon and an immensely successful actress having starred in “Hugo,” “(500) Days of Summer,” “Let Me In” and “Dark Shadows.” As with all the previous winners, Moretz is sure to continue her bright career for years to come.

In honor of Moretz, we’ve come up with a few of our favorite actors and actresses who have seized the potential so clearly seen in their youth. Not all are so fortunate though. From Lindsay Lohan to Haley Joel Osment, glittering futures have also been extinguished through drugs, alcohol, family problems, a lack of true talent, change in appearance, and general laziness. We’ve included these, too.

    Child actors with successful careers

    Drew Barrymore
She had her breakout role in Spielberg’s “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” and, at 7, was the youngest host of “SNL.” She had a troubled adolescence, however, snorting cocaine and going to rehab at age 13. She was able to rebound and has put in some of her best work to date, which includes “Scream,” “Batman Forever,” “Never Been Kissed,” “Grey Gardens,” and being the face of CoverGirl.

    Jodie Foster
At just 3 years old, Foster began acting in TV commercials going on to make nearly 50 TV and film appearances before attending college. Her first big success was in Martin Scorsese’s “Taxi Driver,” where, at 13, she starred opposite Robert De Niro and received a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. While at Yale, she was stalked relentlessly by John Hinckley, Jr., and was even the target of an unrelated assassination attempt. She didn’t waver in her career though, going on to win two Academy Awards for Best Actress for her roles as a rape victim in “The Accused” and as FBI trainee Clarice Starling in “The Silence of the Lambs.”

    Ron Howard
One of the greatest examples of how to maintain and diversify a promising career in film, Ron Howard starred in “The Andy Griffith Show” and “Happy Days” as a young child later appearing in “American Graffiti” at age 19. Howard successfully used his Hollywood ties to transition into the realm of directing, pulling in Academy Awards for “Apollo 13,” “Cocoon,” “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” and “A Beautiful Mind.” He is co-chairman of a film and TV production company, Imagine Entertainment, with Brian Grazer and is still directing and producing films.

Honorable Mentions: Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, Kirsten Dunst, Jason Bateman, Elijah Wood, Anna Paquin, and Elizabeth Taylor.

Child actors who spoiled their potential

    Lindsay Lohan
Once a child fashion model who, at 11, convincingly acted two parts with disparate accents in Disney’s remake of “The Parent Trap,” LiLo continued her success with cute and witty roles in “Freaky Friday,” “Mean Girls” and “Herbie: Fully Loaded.” After two DUIs and three trips to rehab in 2007 alone, Lohan lost numerous roles and  -- even with a recent stint on “SNL” and in Lifetime’s upcoming “Liz & Dick" -- it seems unlikely she’ll ever recover any of her former stardom.

    Haley Joel Osment
    M. Night Shyamalan’s successful “The Sixth Sense” afforded Osment a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor and helped land him roles in Steven Spielberg’s “A.I. Artificial Intelligence” and Mimi Leder’s “Pay It Forward.” For “A.I.” he earned his second Saturn Award for Best Younger Actor and seemed to be a Hollywood favorite starring in 2003’s “Secondhand Lions.” Osment’s popularity in Hollywood came to a stop in 2003 and it was only three years later that he was arrested for DUI and sentenced to three years probation and twenty-six Alcoholics Anonymous classes, signaling the end of his career.

Honorable Mentions: The Olsen Twins starred in “Full House” and own a production company, Dualstar, but have essentially no draw as actresses anymore. Their sister, Elizabeth, star of “Martha Marcy May Marlene” and “Silent House,” however, has begun to craft herself a respectable acting career. "Diff'rent Strokes'" Gary Coleman “Home Alone’s” Macaulay Culkin, “The Lost Boy’s” Corey Haim, and “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory’s” Denise Nickerson.

Actress Drew Barrymore shows off her engagement ring as she sits with her fiance Will Kopelman on Jan. 5, 2012.

    By Us Weekly

It's official! Drew Barrymore is a married woman.

A rep for the actress confirms to Us Weekly that Barrymore, 37, and Will Kopelman, 34 said "I do" on Saturday evening at the actress' Montecito, Calif. estate. The couple, currently expecting their first child together, had their family and closest friends in attendance, including Cameron Diaz, pregnant Reese Witherspoon and her husband Jim Toth, Busy Phillips, Jimmy Fallon and his wife Nancy Juvonen.

For the Jewish ceremony -- complete with a custom-made chuppah and performed by Kopelman's rabbi -- the "Big Miracle" star wore a Chanel gown. (Art consultant Kopelman's father, Arie Kopelman, is the former CEO of Chanel.) Barrymore attended her final dress fitting in Beverly Hills on Thursday with the help of Diaz, 39, her best friend and costar in 2000's "Charlie's Angels." "Drew has been leaning on Cameron a lot," an insider told Us. "Cameron has been very involved."

As designed by Gazebo Flowers, floral arrangements included "hydrangeas, small irises, cream and pink roses and lavender lilies," according to another source.

    PHOTOS: Drew's wild style

This is Barrymore's third marriage. The former child star married Welsh bar owner Jeremy Thomas in March 1994 -- only to split one month later. Her second marriage, was to comic Tom Green in July 2001. Green filed for divorce that December.

Barrymore and Kopelman briefly dated in 2010 and reunited in February 2011. Kopelman proposed in December 2011 during the holidays in Sun Valley, Idaho. Barrymore has yet to confirm her pregnancy, but has been proudly showing her growing baby bump. A pal told Us, Barrymore decided on a June wedding becaues she wanted "to get married before the baby comes, but doesn't want to be huge."

"Drew has found a family that she wants to be a part of, for so long she had the fun friends and career success but always wanted to be part of a close family, like Will's," says an insider.

The "Wedding Singer" star told Ellen DeGeneres she's in love with Kopelman's entire family. "He has this incredible family," Barrymore gushed on Feb. 1. "I am as in love with his family as I am with him. Which is an extraordinary sort of gift. You never take that for granted...It really is an absolute blessing. I feel very lucky. They’re incredible people."

'Big Miracle' is a whale of a good time

    Darren Michaels / AP

John Krasinski and Drew Barrymore brave the ice to save trapped whales in "Big Miracle."

By Michael Rechtshaffen , The Hollywood Reporter

REVIEW: The generically nondescript title aside, "Big Miracle" is an enjoyable, lively account of an Alaskan animal rescue story that touched the world.

Using a broad, generous canvas to recount the events surrounding the 1988 plight of a family of gray whales who become ice-locked off the shores of Barrow, Alaska, director Ken Kwapis and screenwriters Jack Amiel and Michael Begler demonstrate an eye for playful period detail, but it’s the affable cast, headed by Drew Barrymore and John Krasinski, that really makes the picture so widely accessible.

With its all ages appeal, the Universal release could see some buoyant box office along the lines of last fall’s Warner Bros.’ adventure, "Dolphin Tale."

PHOTOS: The big screen's evolution of talking animals

Based on the novel "Freeing the Whales" by Thomas Rose, the film efficiently establishes its brisk tone and equally brisk Arctic Circle setting, where local TV news reporter Adam Carlson (Krasinski) covers the quality of the guacamole at the town’s only Mexican restaurant.

    Follow @ msnbc_ent

His dreams of making it into the bigger markets are realized when he stumbles across three whales trapped beneath the ice, with a single, ever-shrinking hole providing their only oxygen supply.

Carlson’s footage of the whales’ plight initially captures the attention of his ex-girlfriend, environmental activist Rachel Kramer (Barrymore), who quickly takes up the cause.

PHOTOS: 23 awards contenders featuring animals

So does Tom Brokaw, who runs the story on his "NBC Nightly News" telecast, and all of a sudden everyone wants to be in the whale-saving business for very different, self-serving reasons.

With its socio-political ramifications that travel far beyond the snow banks of Barrow, the story also attracts the attention of everybody from the Alaskan Native population to a pro-oil-drilling businessman (Ted Danson) to the Reagan White House, looking to position VP George H.W. Bush as a pro-environmental humanitarian, and even the Glasnost-promoting Soviets.

They’re all given the same even-handed treatment by Amiel and Begler’s script, and while character complexities tend not to run too deeply below the surface, there’s more than enough for Kwapis and his talented cast to utilize to their advantage.

Both Barrymore and Krasinski are terrific and credible both in their respective lines of work and as still-involved former couple.

Good, too are Danson; Dermot Mulroney as a steadfast National Guardsman in charge of transporting a gigantic hoverbarge in an ill-fated rescue mission; and Vinessa Shaw as persistent White House executive assistant Kelly Meyers.

Also enjoyable are all those 1988 touches, from the clunky Walkmans to Gordon Gekko references, while those real-life broadcasts by Brokaw, Dan Rather, Peter Jennings and company have been nicely integrated into the dramatic recreations.

On the subject of recreations, New Zealand-based special effects artists Justin Buckingham and Mike Latham do a sufficiently convincing job of bringing those California gray whales to life (they served a similar function on 2002’s "Whale Rider"); while veteran cinematographer John Bailey crisply captures all that still frosty terrain and steel blue sky.
