It's time to promote Peggy over the other women of 'Mad Men'

    By Kurt Schlosser, TODAY

The men of "Mad Men" may get most of the attention because, well, there they are in the title of the show, but let's not forget about the women.

    Steven Pan / GQ

Elisabeth Moss (Peggy Olson) from "Mad Men."

Joan and Betty and Megan and Peggy -- and a bunch of other names and faces who (used to) cycle in and out of Don's bed -- bring a richness to the series which is only matched by the divisiveness they cause among those who like to debate the hot and the not.

Peggy Olson (Elisabeth Moss), who left us in season five, but who we're reminded (thanks to GQ!) will still be around this season, is clearly someone who is still worth chatting up near the coffee maker. GQ gets it right in labeling her "the office crush," and she gets it right in recognizing how relatable her character is compared to the rest.

"I think Peggy captivates people because they see themselves in her," Moss told the magazine. "I think that she's sort of the everyman, and she's the one that -- especially women of all ages and especially women in the professional world -- identify with."

We've always appreciated the relationship Peggy has with Don and no episode spelled out their dynamic better than "The Suitcase" in season four. Did we want them to hook up? Of course not. OK, yes. Would it have ruined everything? Totally.

Everything was totally ruined for Don and his ex, Betty Francis (January Jones), and that has led to an interesting dynamic for fans when it comes to his current wife, Megan Draper (Jessica Paré). Don's cheating finally sent Betty packing and into the arms of Henry (zzzzzz), and we're left with Don trying to be a good husband this time around (zzzzzz).

    AMC

More women of "Mad Men," from left, Betty, Megan and Joan.

Megan can "Zou Bisou Bisou" all she wants, but it's just not working. Betty is bitter and unhappy in marriage again and all we want is for her to have some sort of awkward affair with Don. What is wrong with us?!

Joan Harris (Christina Hendricks) gets a lot of love for reasons that are way too obvious. Stop staring at her pen -- she's a partner now at the agency! And even though she slept with a man to get to the top, we're hoping she steps on a few in order to stay there.

"Mad Men" season six premieres Sunday at 9 p.m. on AMC.

'Mad Men' boss and cast dish on season six: Is Don alone?

    Brian Sanders / AMC

    By Drusilla Moorhouse, TODAY contributor

"Mad Men" finally returns Sunday with a special two-hour premiere, and although creator Matthew Weiner is notoriously secretive about his acclaimed AMC drama, he and the cast did share a few tidbits with TODAY.com about season six.

For some clues, Weiner and star Jon Hamm recommend a careful study of the promo poster by famed '60s advertising illustrator Brian Sanders.

"The central motif of it obviously is these two versions of this one man crossing," mused Hamm. "Which one are we supposed to be following? One of them is with somebody, and one of them is not. I think that shouldn't be lost on people. One of them has a briefcase in his hand, one of them doesn't. It's a very rich image.

"This is chaotic and different and in many ways suggests the world we're moving into," the star teased about the era the season takes place in. "Bright colors and crazy tones and a lot going on."

Much of season six centers around "the anxiety that is created by, in all of these characters, wondering why they are the way they are," said Weiner. "When someone says, 'People will do anything to alleviate their anxiety,' that's what this season is about."

One of the major questions viewers have is whether Don will continue to be faithful to his latest wife, Megan.

"Don's asked, 'Are you alone?' at the end of the season last year and he doesn't answer it," said Weiner. "Don's fidelity isn't a great issue in the show -- it's an event. We watched last season that he was faithful and that it was confusing to people that he had almost this schoolgirl perception of what that relationship was going to be.

    Michael Yarish / AMC

Jon Hamm says we find out more about why Don Draper "does what he does."

"His infidelity is a symptom -- it's not a disease," he continued. "The disease is the aloneness and the belief that you're alone. ... What are the fruits of that, what is the answer to that question? How do I change that?"

Hamm says his character's life has been "out of balance for quite some time. We find out more in season six about why Don is how he is. And why Don does what he does. His house is built on a weak foundation. He's a fundamentally damaged and broken guy."

Things will be even tougher for Don now that one of his greatest allies, Peggy, has left Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce. But that doesn't mean audiences will see any less of his ambitious former secretary.

"I was actually pleasantly surprised by how much I had to do in this season," Elisabeth Moss said about her character's arc. "I was kind of expecting not to be in it so much because I thought, well, I'm at a different agency. And I'm pleasantly surprised. I'm very happy with where it's gone -- I'm very happy with what's happened."

Also making a career leap is Joan, now a partner after her controversial decision to sleep with a client to land an important account last season.

    Michael Yarish / AMC

Christina Hendricks' character Joan Harris takes on a new role as partner.

"We definitely are exploring the fact that we have seen her all of a sudden become partner and what that means," Christina Hendricks confirmed. "Are people going to just all of a sudden turn around and (say), 'Oh, Joan's a partner -- let's treat her like a partner'? Or is how she got there going to affect (her colleagues' reactions)?"

Viewers won't see much of Joan in the premiere -- partly because Roger takes center stage.

"Just when you think that Roger's just a (expletive) who doesn't care about anybody, he cares about somebody," raved John Slattery about his unpredictable character. "Or is just a misogynistic drunk, he's better at business than you think he is. ... It's just so unexpected. The storytelling is so good."

"He's so funny -- it really is great," Slattery said about the comic relief Roger brings to "Mad Men."

"Hamm and I sit next to each other at these read-throughs and we're just cackling because it's so funny. And then he'll point out how many jokes I have, and I'm like, 'Yeah, but look at the women sitting across the table who are playing the women that you're going to be in bed with.'"

Fred Armisen on failed Elisabeth Moss marriage: 'I was a terrible husband'

Frederick M. Brown / Getty Images file

    Fred Armisen.

    By Courtney Hazlett, TODAY

"Portlandia" and "Saturday Night Live" star Fred Armisen was nothing if not frank during his Jan. 3 interview with (equally frank) Howard Stern. The two covered quite a bit of ground during the radio interview and among the topics was Armisen's brief marriage to "Mad Men" star Elisabeth Moss. The two knew each other for a year before marrying, and of their union, which lasted less than a year, Armisen told Stern, "I was a terrible husband."

"I want it all -- fast ... I want to be married," Armisen said. "The amount of girls I’ve lived with -- right away -- and then somewhere around a year, two years, I get freaked out. Freaked out emotionally ... and I actually feel like, 'oh my god, who is this stranger in my house?'"

Armisen's comments come months after his ex wife broke the ice about the demise of their marriage. In an interview with Page Six magazine in March 2012, Moss said, "It's so hard to talk about ... One of the greatest things I heard someone say about him (Armisen) is, 'He's so great at doing impersonations. But the greatest impersonation he does is that of a normal person.' To me, that sums it up ... And I think that's ... that's it. I've never told anyone that. And I don't want to waste any more of my life talking about it."

Speaking of impersonations, another change that came for Armisen in 2012 as that he was no longer impersonating President Barack Obama on "Saturday Night Live" -- a role he played since the 2008 presidential campaign. "It's not like breaking news, it's a discussion with ("SNL" executive producer) Lorne Michaels," Armisen explained.

And when it was decided that Jay Pharoah would take over the Obama role, Armisen was completely cool with it. "I get to do so much on that show. They let me do the craziest most experimental things," Armisen said. "I trust what the show is. So it feels nice to hand it over and say, 'yeah, great, whatever works best for the show' ... I loved doing it and it was fun, and for some reason it's fun not doing it. It's great to see it change over. "

'Mad Men' star Elisabeth Moss debuts short, blonde hair

    By Kurt Schlosser, TODAY

Is actress Elisabeth Moss taking a page out of Miley Cyrus' radical-hair-change playbook?

Elisabeth Moss in New York on Tuesday night, and in character on "Mad Men," right.

"Mad Men's" Peggy Olson stepped out for the premiere of "For A Good Time, Call..." in New York on Tuesday night. The normally brunette star debuted a much shorter blonde 'do, while sporting a form-fitting black lace dress.

"I wanted to do something really different," Moss told Us Weekly on the red carpet.

We look forward to the reaction among the always-tactful guys around the office at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce.
