    Elvis crypt pulled from auction

    By Miriam Coleman, Rolling Stone

Elvis Presley's original crypt has been pulled off the auction block from a sale of music memorabilia, the Associated Press reports.

Julien's Auctions had announced in May that the empty crypt in Memphis, where Elvis and his mother lay for two months before their reburial on the grounds of the Graceland estate, would be part of this Sunday's "Music Icons" auction. With a bid starting at $100,000, the price was to include a memorial inscription, use of the Forest Hill Cemetery's chapel for a service, and the opening and closing of the vault and crypt for burial.

Fans across the world were displeased by the potential sale, and demanded that the site be preserved as a shrine to the late King's memory. Darren Julien of the auction house announced on Friday that his company has agreed not to sell the crypt.

Elvis Presley to get his own hologram

Elvis will in fact be getting his own hologram, according to Digital Domain Media Group. The group has teamed with Core Media Group to create a virtual Elvis, which will appear on film, television and other media, with concerts apparently an option as well.

Digital Domain are the creators of the holographic Tupac that performed at this year's Coachella Festival, attracting tons of attention and talks on which stars should be resurrected next, if at all. Core Media, which owns the rights to Elvis' likeness, recently restructured itself after another of its properties, "American Idol," saw a ratings drop last season. The company also recently teased upcoming Elvis projects, including a revamp of the Graceland museum, a possible drama series and a duets album with Sony.

Further details, including the first holographic Elvis appearance, will be announced in the future. Elvis' likeness has already graced the stage, appearing on a video tour that predates the hologram by several years.

Elvis Presley's crypt set to be auctioned off

    By Bob Tourtellotte, Reuters

The crypt in which Elvis Presley's body was first laid to rest before being moved to the grounds of his Graceland mansion is set to be auctioned off in June along with other memorabilia from rock music and sports stars.

Julien's Auctions Sports Legends and Music Icons sale will feature items from Rolling Stone guitarist Keith Richards and the late singer Amy Winehouse to basketball superstar Michael Jordan, the auctioneer said in a statement on Monday.

But the original Elvis crypt is likely to gain a lot of attention. Elvis, among the best known rock 'n' rollers of all time, died in 1977 and following his funeral at Graceland, his body was temporarily entombed in the crypt of a private mausoleum at Forest Hill Cemetery in Memphis, Tennessee.

After about two months, both his body and that of his mother were moved to a permanent site in the meditation garden on the grounds of Graceland. Beverly Hills-based Julien's said the lot for sale includes the crypt, opening and closing of the vault for burial, memorial inscription and use of a small chapel for a memorial service.

The two-day sale on June 23 and 24 also includes a ripped t-shirt with "Hell" scrawled across it Keith Richards once wore while playing for the Stones.

A robe that Amy Winehouse used in her video for smash hit "Rehab" will be sold, as will memorabilia and clothing owned by David Bowie, John Lennon and Michael Jackson.

Sports items include a pair of shoes worn and signed by Michael Jordan, the hood of a race car signed by driving champion Tony Stewart and a Lance Armstrong skin suit worn in the 2003 Tour de France.

Warhol's 'Double Elvis' could sell for as much as $50 million at auction

    AP

"Double Elvis [Ferus Type]" is estimated to sell for between $30 million to $50 million at Sotheby's in New York on May 9, 2012.

    By Reuters

An iconic portrait of Elvis Presley by pop artist Andy Warhol is poised to fetch as much as $50 million when it hits the auction block in May, Sotheby's said on Thursday.

The life-size painting, "Double Elvis (Ferus Type)" from 1963, epitomizes Warhol's obsessions with fame, stardom and the public image, according to Sotheby's.

Estimated to sell for $30 million to $50 million, it will be included in the auction house's May 9 sale of post-war and contemporary art.

"The silver background of 'Double Elvis (Ferus Type),' along with the subtle variations in tone give the serial imagery a sense of rhythmic variation that recalls the artist's masterpiece, '200 One Dollar Bills' completed the previous year," Sotheby's said in a statement.

That work soared to nearly $44 million or four times its estimate in 2009, when the art market was reeling from the financial crisis that struck in 2008. It was the highlight of the season, and achieved the highest price of any work at the fall auctions.

In the "Double Elvis" work, Presley is dressed as a cowboy, shooting a gun. Sotheby's described him in the work "a Hollywood icon of the '60s rather than the rebellious singer who shook the world of music in the '60s."

The double in the title refers to a shadowy image of Presley in the same pose that appears next to him in the work.

Of 22 works in Warhol's Elvis series which were first exhibited at Los Angeles' Ferus gallery, nine are in museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art.

At the Los Angeles exhibit, Warhol stipulated that "the paintings were to be displayed as a 'continuous surround,' encircling the gallery like flickering pictures reminiscent of early film," Sotheby's said.

The last double Elvis work to come up for auction was in 1995. Prices for Warhols have soared dramatically since then, with works featuring pop culture icons such as Marilyn Monroe, Jacqueline Kennedy and Elizabeth Taylor fetching top prices.

But it was a work from Warhol's "Death and Disaster" series that set the artist's record, which still stands. "Green Car Crash (Green Car Burning)," also from 1963, more than doubled its estimate and sold for $71.7 million in 2007, at the height of the art market boom.

"Double Elvis" will be exhibited in Los Angeles, Hong Kong and London prior to the May sale.
