'Game of Thrones' set to 'Friends' music -- off with their ha ha heads!

    HBO via YouTube

Hey, Ned Stark! "I'll be there for youuuuuuu ..." Except, well, that one time when you really needed me.

    By Kurt Schlosser, TODAY

It's tough to remember the last time we heard the "Friends" theme song and thought about chopping someone's head off. But a fresh take on the "Game of Thrones" viral video set to "I'll Be There For You" has rekindled the fun and troubling juxtaposition.

Is there really that much smiling and laughter in the HBO fantasy series that we watch because it's full of swordplay, sex and dragons? With that clappy music playing over the top of "Thrones" clips, we'll believe anything!

Tyrion Lannister slaps Joffrey Baratheon! "So no one told you life was gonna be this wayyyyyy ... clap clap clap clap clap."

Jamie Lannister pushes little Bran Stark out of the tower! Paralyzing hysterics!

Ned Stark loses his head? Cut to giggling Cersei Baratheon! (Wait -- that actually feels natural.)

    Watch on YouTube

The video by YouTube user YuesWoman follows at least one other attempt at mixing "Thrones" and "Friends." And we've seen how our other favorite dark shows -- "Breaking Bad" and "The Walking Dead" -- have seen the light of the '90s with reimagined theme music.

But the next time we tune in to "Thrones" to see someone take an arrow in the chest, we can't help but worry Rachel or Chandler or Phoebe will be in our heads laughing or hugging it out. "Clap clap clap clap clap!"

Peter Dinklage talks 'Game of Thrones,' sex appeal and (not) being a badass

    Helen Sloan / HBO

Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister on "Game of Thrones."

    By Ree Hines, TODAY contributor

He stars on one of television's hottest dramas. He plays the most popular character on the show. Heck, he's nabbed an Emmy and a Golden Globe for the role. But no matter how many accolades have come his way since taking on the part of Tyrion Lannister on "Game of Thrones," Peter Dinklage just doesn't believe the hype he hears about himself.

One of the claims Dinklage doesn't buy -- no matter what female fans say --  is that he's now a sex symbol, or as some call him, a DwILF ("Dwarf I'd like to ..." -- well, you get the idea).

"That's very clever," the actor said of the acronym in a recent 20 Questions interview with Playboy magazine. "Honestly, I think there's an irony in all of this. I take it with a grain of salt. They'll say, 'Oh, he's sexy,' but women still go for guys who are six-foot-two. It's nice that people are thinking outside the box, but I don't believe any of it for a minute."

He also doesn't believe his new "badass" image, courtesy of his "Thrones" character. And if fans knew the full story behind his onscreen adventures, he doesn't think they'd believe it either.

"There's a scene in the show when I chop a man's leg off from behind," he explained. "The gentleman was probably about 70 years old. They filmed him from the back, so you don't see how old he is. Also he's an amputee. He had one leg, so basically I just knocked out the fake leg. I had a big dull sword, and I knocked a wooden leg off an amputee who was 70 years old. So to answer your question, no, I don't feel like a badass."

In fact, he insisted that the "fight scenes are all a big lie."

"The whole time, you're trying not to get hit in the eye with a sword, and you wish you had on a welding helmet," Dinklaged added.

Twitter Follow Ree Hines on Twitter

But even if he isn't convinced that he's as great as he appears to be on the small screen, Dinklage believes one thing firmly -- his great "Game of Thrones" role isn't going away any time soon.

"I don't think Tyrion is going anywhere," he told the magazine. "He once said that he'd like to die 'in my own bed, at the age of 80, with a belly full of wine and a girl's ...' "

Ahem! Let's just say a woman making him very happy.

"I like to think that was a premonition," Dinklage mused. "That's how he's going to go. He's a survivor."

What do you think? Is the "Game of Thrones" star the "badass" sex symbol some say he is, or is he just good at acting that way? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.

Peter 'Drunklage' steals the show on 'Saturday Night Live'

    NBC

Peter Dinklage and Bobby Moynihan on Weekend Update.

    By Anna Chan, TODAY

Cheers! "Game of Thrones" star Peter Dinklage made an appearance on "Saturday Night Live's" Weekend Update to chat taxes alongside Drunk Uncle (played by Bobby Moynihan) and Seth Meyers.

Drunk Uncle introduced his brother-in-law, Peter "Drunklage," about halfway through the segment when he admitted to watching the hit HBO drama and poked fun at the show, saying, "So I'm not King Joffrey, OK?! ... 'I'm a little jerk king!' Pfft. That's not me."

Twitter Follow The Clicker on Twitter

Twitter Follow Anna Chan on Twitter

That's when "Drunklage" boozily rolled onto the set. After mumbling about 99 tumblers of scotch in his mouth and today's kids not wearing garters, the man behind Tyrion Lannister slurred, "You know what's in my tumbler? REGRET." He then went on to talk taxes and let fly a joke that left the audience "oooooh-ing": "I wish the IRS stood for Immigration Return Services." Check it out:

In other guest appearances, former NBA star Dennis Rodman poked a little fun at his friendship with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in the show's cold open.

As Moynihan's supreme leader finished talking about how he nailed his NCAA brackets, the athlete came out to give his pal a fist bump. When asked if he had anything to add, Rodman slightly botched the show's famous intro and yelled, "Live in New York, it's 'Saturday Night'!" The line is "Live from New York, it's 'Saturday Night'!"

Actress Melissa McCarthy hosted the show once again, and this time took on the recent scandal surrounding Rutgers coach Mike Rice, a ham-cooking contest, "The Voice" and wearing high heels.

Vince Vaughn is set to host next week.

'Game of Thrones' star: 'I have less than $5 in my bank'

    By Bruna Nessif, E! Online

Jason Merritt / AFP - Getty Images

Lena Headey plays Queen Cersei on "Game of Thrones."

Lena Headey is battling on a budget.

The "Game of Thrones" star, who filed for divorce from her hairdresser husband Peter Loughran in July, claims in her latest court filing pertaining to the split that her bank account is down to single digits.

"At the present time, I have less than $5 in my bank account and have been using credit cards to pay for living expenses for myself and our son Wylie," states Headey, who plays Cersei Lannister on the HBO hit, in the 79-page filing obtained by E! News.

According to the documents, Headey asked her estranged hubby for her share of their 2011 tax refund, stating in a declaration that, after she married Loughran, she became pregnant with their first and only child, who's now 2, and was deemed not insurable due the pregnancy and was unable to work.

Because of that, the British actress says, they "burned through their savings" and "incurred a substantial amount of consumer debt to pay for our living expense during marriage." She is currently asking for a $6,000 advance from her half of the 2011 tax refund and a hearing has been scheduled for April 26.

'Game of Thrones' kicks off the season with dragons, death and drama

    Keith Bernstein/HBO

    By Ree Hines, TODAY contributor

    Winter is here -- finally!

After a 10 month break from dragons, White Walkers and the Wall, "Game of Thrones" returned Sunday night to remind viewers of everything they've been missing and more.

The season three premiere packed plenty of drama -- from army building to army buying -- and it packed loads of corpses. In fact, the body count tipped 200. (Not that all of those bodies that Robb Stark found matched the episode's lone nipple-slicing scene for pure gross-out value. Yikes!)

Here's a rundown of the some of the important points from the highly anticipated and not-at-all-disappointing episode:

    • Jon Snow is alive and well -- and darned lucky. As Ygritte warned him during his beyond-the-Wall trek, if the Wildlings main man Mance Rayder didn't like him, he was as good as dead. As it turned out, Mance likes him just fine -- at least for now.
    • Daenerys dragons, which are still downright adorable, aren't the only mythical creatures roaming around now (well, in addition to direwolves and White Walkers). Thar be giants too -- or at least one among the Wildlings.

Twitter Follow The Clicker on Twitter

Twitter Follow Ree Hines on Twitter

    • Speaking of Daenerys, she needs 8,000 soldiers to assist in her bid for the big chair, and she's ready to lead them.
    • As for the show's most important character (that would be Tyrion Lannister, in case you didn't know), he's lost a little of his gumption (thanks to the events of last season) but none of his wit. When his sister snips that he's not half as clever as he thinks he is, he's quick to shoot back, "Still makes me more clever than you.
    • Oh, and Joffrey? Well, the boy king is still annoyingly … himself.

If you missed the action Sunday night, catch a replay the "Game of Thrones" season premiere Monday night on HBO.

Peter Dinklage drops 'Game of Thrones' spoiler on 'The Daily Show'

    By Drusilla Moorhouse, TODAY contributor

The third-season premiere of "Game of Thrones" is just five sleeps away, but Peter Dinklage, who plays Tyrion on HBO's epic fantasy series, dropped a major spoiler on "The Daily Show" Monday.

After Jon Stewart jokingly predicted, "not to give anything away, but your family does win and you become king," the Emmy winner teased: "We get a drive-through at Westeros!"

(Chick-fil-A or In-N-Out Burger? Guess we'll have to tune in to find out!)

Twitter Follow Drusilla Moorhouse on Twitter

Just like his sardonic character, Dinklage is a master of deadpan.

When his host asked where they filmed the visually stunning series, he quipped, "Jersey. Occasionally we'll go to a land called Connecticut."

Actually, he admitted most of his scenes take place in Northern Ireland, where, unlike America's obsessed fans -- about whom Dinklage coined the term "nerd glaze" -- the residents "don't care" about the film shoots.

To keep things legit, Dinklage cracked, "We are called to set by a raven. Ca-caw!"

'Game of Thrones' actor has ear bitten off

    YouTube

Clive Mantle in his role as Lord Jon Umber on HBO's "Game of Thrones."

    By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, TODAY

It's not unlike a scene that could take place in Westeros. "Game of Thrones" actor Clive Mantle, who plays Lord Jon Umber, better known as The Greatjon, on the first season of the HBO show, had part of his ear bitten off on Sunday, the BBC reports.

Mantle, 55, was in a Travelodge hotel in Newcastle, England, when he was bitten. A spokesman for the actor's agent told the BBC that Mantle asked other guests to keep the noise down and then was pinned to the floor and attacked. The top part of his right ear was bitten off, but surgeons at the Royal Victoria Infirmary sewed it back on, the spokesman said.

    Follow @ TODAY_ent

The BBC reports that one man has been charged in the incident and will appear in court next month. Another man was released on bail and a third released without charge.

Mantle was in Newcastle starring in a play, "The Ladykillers," which was supposed to continue its run in Salford, England on Tuesday. A publicist for the play told the BBC she did not know when Mantle would be able to rejoin the cast.

In one episode of "Game of Thrones," Mantle's character has two of his fingers bitten off by Robb Stark's direwolf, though his ears remain untouched.

Best bets: Two new judges come to 'The Voice'

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, NBC News

It's a good week for TV watchers, with both "The Voice" and "Game of Thrones" returning to the small screen. And if you liked "Twilight," you might want to check out the new movie based on a novel by "Twilight" author Stephenie Meyer, even if it's vampire-free.

    MONDAY: 'The Voice'
"The Voice" returns for a fourth season with its first big judge shakeup. Cee Lo Green and Christina Aguilera? Out, at least for now. Usher and Shakira? In! The two single-name singing superstars will join fellow judges Adam Levine and Blake Shelton. They'll get help from battle-round advisers Hillary Scott of Lady Antebellum, Sheryl Crow, Pharrell Williams and Joel Madden. (March 25, 8 p.m., NBC.)

    Follow @ NBCNewsEnt

    SUNDAY: 'Game of Thrones'
Winter is coming! Again! Still! "Game of Thrones" fans have been waiting a long time for the third season of the HBO fantasy drama, and we're finally heading back to Westeros. This season is loosely based on the first half of the third book in the series, "A Storm of Swords." New characters will include Mance Rayder, the King-beyond-the-Wall; Unsullied eunuch captain Grey Worm; Catelyn's uncle Brynden Tully, the Blackfish, and more. (March 31, 9 p.m., HBO.)

    FRIDAY: 'The Host'
Any movie with Stephenie Meyer's name on it has to be taken seriously after her huge worldwide hit with the "Twilight" series. "The Host," based on another book by Meyer, takes a completely different tack. Instead of vampires, it focuses on alien invaders who have been taking over the minds of humans. One human, Melanie (Saoirse Ronan) refuses to give in to the alien, and they form an emotional connection. Wow, that might be even harder to explain than the whole Team Edward-Team Jacob thing. (Opens March 29.)

'Game of Thrones' prequel series possible, says author George R. R. Martin

Jason Redmond / Jason Redmond / REUTERS

    George R. R. Martin.

    By Jon Blistein, Rolling Stone

A "Game of Thrones" prequel could be in the works, according to series creator George R. R. Martin, who told IGN there are talks of turning his "Tales of Dunk and Egg" novellas – which also take place in Westeros, but 100 years before the events of  Game of Thrones  – into a TV show.

"We have been playing with the idea of doing those as prequels," Martin said. "They're somewhat lighter in tone than the main series, a little more adventurous. But my fans love them and I love the two characters too, and it all ties into Westeros history."

"Game of Thrones" creator will make cameo in season three

Martin, who also has a development deal with HBO, revealed some ideas he's been working on for the network, including a science fiction show and a historical drama (though, as he noted, development is always a bit of a crapshoot).

Q&A: "Game of Thrones" insider Bryan Cogman on the biggest season yet

"The trick is, I have to find another David Benioff and Dan Weiss," Martin added, referring to the two "Game of Thrones" showrunners. "Because while I can come up with the ideas and the concepts for the show, I'm not in a position to write them because I have 3,000 more pages of the books to write, and that has to remain my top priority."

'Game of Thrones' season three trailer: War, doom and dragons abound

    HBO

    Emilia Clarke as Daenerys Targaryen.

    By Drusilla Moorhouse, TODAY contributor

In the newest trailer for "Game of Thrones," Tyrion Lannister warns of the "Seven Kingdoms united in fear of Tywin Lannister."

But in fact, unity and peace are not imminent for the characters of creator George R. R. Martin's fantasy world: Season three of the HBO epic promises to be the bloodiest yet.

"How long does it go on?" Tyrion asks his sister about the wars plaguing the world of Westeros.

"Until we've dealt with all our enemies," responds Cersei.

5 shows we'd quit if the best characters left

    By TODAY staff

    HBO / PBS / CBS

Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister on "Game of Thrones," Maggie Smith as the Dowager Countess on "Downton Abbey," and Jim Parsons as Sheldon Cooper on "Big Bang Theory."

Ensemble casts on television often give their shows a great chemistry that can't be beat. But when one person makes an exit, it can sometimes change the flavor too much, throwing off the delicate balance and leaving fans wondering if it's time to change the channel. (Remember when David Duchovny left "X Files"? Or when George Clooney bailed on "ER"? How Steve Carell quit "The Office"?)

Siobhan Finneran's announcement last week that she was leaving "Downton Abbey" left fans of the period drama torn. Good riddance to nasty maid O'Brien, some declared, while others wondered who -- if anyone -- could stir the pot of trouble she so expertly handled.

That got us thinking: Which shows would we quit if certain characters left? Here's what we came up with:

    The Dowager Countess, 'Downton Abbey'
Everyone focuses on the Dowager Countess’ many witty quips on “Downton Abbey.”  And for good reason -- they’re great. ("Oh my dear, you flatter me, which is just as it should be.") But they’re only part of why the Dowager IS “Downton.” Even though Maggie Smith is 78, her physical acting can either break your heart or break you up in giggles. Who can forget her battle with Matthew Crawley’s unexpected swivel chair? (As with everything, she blames the Americans.) And though everyone keened over Lady Sybil’s death, it was the Dowager who delivered the most touching tribute. “We’ve seen some troubles, you and I,” she tells Carson. “Nothing worse than this.” And as she walks forward, her grief nearly knocks her down, like a swell in the ocean. For just a minute, she has to grab the wall to steady herself before walking forward alone, a black-clad ship that’s been battered, but cannot allow itself to sink. -- Gael Fashingbauer Cooper

    Tyrion Lannister, 'Game of Thrones'
There's no shortage of great characters on HBO's "Game of Thrones." Some have been with the show since the beginning, such as dragon matriarch Dany. Some of the best ones are later additions, like the Onion Knight himself, Davos Seaworth. And some of the greats are already long gone -- RIP, Ned Stark. But there's really only one character the show could never do without. Battles would be less cunning and trips to the brothels far less funny without the true lion of the Lannisters, Tyrion. He dishes more dry one-liners than "Downton's" Dowager ("I'm a monster, as well as a dwarf -- you should charge me double") with a decidedly deadlier streak ("Those are brave men knocking at our door. Let's go kill them!"). -- Ree Hines

Twitter Follow The Clicker on Twitter

Sheldon Cooper, 'The Big Bang Theory'
Yes, Penny, Leonard, Howard, Bernadette, Raj and Amy Farrah Fowler all have their bright moments on the show (and quite a few of them!), but without their brilliant, egotistical and socially incompetent pal Sheldon, there would be no one around to give them the hilarious situations they always find themselves in. Sure, one episode had Sheldon discovering that his friends could survive without him in their social group -- and quite well, at that -- but whether the comedy could do the same is another question. Yes, some shows have continued by recasting major roles (Becky on "Roseanne," Darrin on "Bewitched," for example). But could another actor truly capture the essence of Sheldon as Jim Parsons does? As the theoretical physicist might say, "That is highly illogical." -- Anna Chan

    Roger Sterling, 'Mad Men'
I’ve always suspected that Roger Sterling could go the Lane route and off himself at a moment’s notice. After all, he’s a double divorcé who wiles away his worries with drinks, unfulfilling sexual dalliances and Pete-bashing witticisms. (Who doesn’t love to hate Pete, though?) But that was before Joan and Roger’s little accident. It’s given Roger something to live for and the once-self-centered man, a man who left his first wife because she was getting too old, may be entering a state of reform and taking a step back from the proverbial rooftop edge. At least I hope so. I couldn’t imagine “Mad Men” without such a politically incorrect hedonist in the mix. A man who excuses his infidelity by saying, "We've all parked in the wrong garage." A man who looks at a journalist with a peg leg and says, "They're so cheap they can't even afford a whole reporter." Roger's a man who says exactly what he wants to say when he wants to say it. Rude? Absolutely. Hilarious and charming? Even more so. -- Cody Delistraty

    Lafayette, 'True Blood'
Bon Temps is crawling with interesting characters, be they living, dead or somewhere in between. Of course, most of the action in the creepy bayou backwoods revolves around "True Blood's' leading lady, Sookie Stackhouse -- the fellas in town certainly can't get enough of her. But while losing Sookie might be a deal breaker for Bill, Eric or Alcide, that doesn't mean she's the important character as far as those of us on the other side of the screen are concerned. "True Blood" would lose most of its heart, soul, attitude, comic relief and -- now that Russell Edgington is gone -- all of its quote-worthy snaps if it ever lost Lafayette. He's the cook-turned-dealer-turned-hustler-turned-medium who can bring a laugh or lay down a (warning: curse-filled) bit of wisdom with equal ease, and the show wouldn't be the same without him. -- Ree Hines

Best bets: Make your Oscar picks now

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, NBC News

All the other awards shows have been leading up to this one. The Academy Awards are coming, and they're the one bright spot in a dull entertainment week. You can prepare for the show by watching the film that might just win best picture, "Argo," which hits home video this week. And if you prefer your history a little older and more fantastical, the second season of "Game of Thrones" is also coming to home video.

    Warner Bros., DreamWorks, Univer

"Argo," "Lincoln," "Zero Dark Thirty" and "Les Miserables" are all Oscar contenders.

    TUESDAY: 'Argo' on home video
Even before it started snatching up all the film awards, "Argo" was garnering great word-of-mouth and excellent critical reviews. No American who was alive in 1979 could not know about the Iranian hostage crisis, but somehow, "Argo" picked up on a dramatic sidebar -- the rescue of six embassy employees who had snuck out of their workplace and hid in the Canadian ambassador's home. The tale is slightly fictionalized, but it's a fascinating tale, with John Goodman and Alan Arkin delivering memorable performances as the moviemakers who help out CIA agent Ben Affleck. And yes, Affleck got robbed when he wasn't nominated for a best director Oscar. (Out on home video Feb. 19.)

TUESDAY: 'Game of Thrones' season two on home video
Need to catch up on the hit HBO fantasy series before it returns on March 31? Scoop up the DVD set this week and fall back into the world of Westeros. The Lannisters and Daenerys are back, of course, with plenty of new characters introduced in the second season, including Stannis Baratheon, Melisandre, Craster, Gilly and the fan favorite, Brienne of Tarth. (Out on home video Feb. 19.)

    SUNDAY: Academy Awards
Here we are, movie fans. The night of the year. Forget all the awards shows that have come before, this is the Big Kahuna. We all know Ben Affleck was snubbed in the director category, but will his film, "Argo," steal best picture from "Lincoln"? Can young upstart and "Silver Linings Playbook" star Jennifer Lawrence take home the best actress honor so many thought belonged to Jessica Chastain for "Zero Dark Thirty"? Can anyone stop Anne Hathaway and Daniel Day-Lewis? And how will Seth MacFarlane of "Family Guy" fame do as host? Pop the popcorn and the champagne, make your Oscar pool picks and settle in. (Feb. 24, 7 p.m. ET, ABC.)
