George Clooney pays diner's bill in Germany

    By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, TODAY

Dinner's on George Clooney! One group of diners at the Grill Royal restaurant in Berlin were treated to a free meal because the actor was worried that he and his friends at a nearby table were making too much noise, Clooney's representative has confirmed to TODAY.

According to English-language publication The Local, German newspaper Bild reported that Clooney and Co. weren't disturbing the others in any way.

"They had behaved in a very cultivated manner," one man in the group told the paper, "I was stunned."

According to The Local, the man never recognized Clooney, even when he stopped by the star's table to leave a business card in hopes he could repay the gesture some day.

The newspaper reported that the dinner bill was around 100 Euros, or $135 U.S.

It's far from Clooney's first generous gesture. Back in October, paparazzi captured a photo of the actor giving money to a man sitting on a New York street wearing military dog tags.

Clooney is in Germany to direct and star in "Monuments Men," an upcoming big-screen drama also starring Daniel Craig and Cate Blanchett. Based on Robert M. Edsel's book, the film is about a group of Allied art experts racing to save priceless artworks from destruction by the Nazis.

Taylor Swift meets with teen fan battling brain cancer

    By Marc Malkin, Eonline

Taylor Swift may be one of the busiest hit-making singers around, but that won't stop her from paying it forward--especially when it comes to her fans.

Case in point: she recently met with Kayla Kincannon, a 17-year-old Michigan girl battling brain cancer.

Kayla's family friends launched an online campaign -- #OperationGetKaylaToMeetTaylorSwift on Twitter -- about a month ago to reach out to Swift and let her know about Kayla's dream to meet her idol.

That dream came true on Jan. 19.

"You guys have no idea how awesome this lunch was!" Kayla's dad Brad posted on their Team Kayla website. "This was no quick meet and greet photo opp. We sat and talked to Taylor and her mom for two hours, had lunch and Kayla received a gift basket, then she signed pictures!

"She is the sweetest, most down-to-earth person I have ever met!" he continued. "This was more than we ever expected! I'm so thankful to team Kayla, news, and everyone who made her dream come true! This was the best day ever for her and all of us!"

The day before, Kayla posted on Facebook that Swift's mom, Andrea, had contacted the family to arrange for Taylor to pick up her up in her tour bus. Kayla tweeted, "Can not believe I just had lunch w @taylorswift13 today, I was enchanted to meet you!"

Christian Bale has hung up the cape, but he continues to perform good deeds. The actor known for playing Batman recently spoke with Zach, an eight-year-old Batman fanatic who is fighting leukemia.

In a video posted on YouTube Friday, Zach seemed a bit shy, but at his mother’s prodding told Bale about how he pretends to be Batman and has convinced his younger brother he actually is the Dark Knight.

“Oh really? He believes that you are,” Bale said before breaking into laughter.

Zach also told the actor about his cardboard Batmobile and his realistic Batman costume. Bale found common ground with the young fan by telling him about England, which he said was similar to Zach’s native Seattle.

“I don’t know if you can hear it in my voice, but I wasn’t born in America,” Bale said. “I was actually born in a country called England. A lot of people tell me that Seattle is a lot like England, because it’s kind of rainy.”

Bale thanked Zach for watching his films and said the boy embodied the film’s message. “The whole point of the movie is anybody can be Batman. Anybody can be as strong as that and help people and put good out into the world,” Bale said.

As Bale wrapped up the chat, he said he’d tell “the lady who plays Catwoman” (Anne Hathaway) -- and, yes, even the man who played the evil Bane (Tom Hardy) -- about their conversation.

“Even though he was not a good guy in the film, the man who played him is a very good guy. I’ll tell him ... and the director as well,” Bale said. “He loves to hear when I speak to someone who is a big fan of the movies. It makes us all so happy.”

Bale ended the conversation by saying speaking with Zach had made his day.

In addition to chatting with Zach, Bale previously flew the family of a young cancer patient to Disneyland to have lunch with him and his family. He also visited victims of the mass shooting at a midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises" in Aurora, Colorado.
