'Catching Fire' teaser trailer lights up MTV Movie Awards

    By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, TODAY
Jennifer Lawrence wasn't at Sunday night's MTV Movie Awards, but her presence was felt anyway. Not only did she win the best kiss award (sharing the honor with "Silver Linings Playbook" co-star Bradley Cooper), but she was seen in the "Catching Fire" teaser trailer premiere.

"Catching Fire" is the second film in the "Hunger Games" series, and hits theaters Nov. 22. Co-star Liam Hemsworth introduced the teaser later in the awards to much applause.

    Follow @ TODAY_ent

The second movie takes place after Katniss (Lawrence) and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) have won the Hunger Games, but they're far from safe. As seen in the trailer, President Snow (an evil Donald Sutherland) isn't about to let them live happily ever after.

"She has to be eliminated," he says of Katniss.

Plenty of familiar faces return in the teaser, including former winner Haymitch (Woody Harrelson), bubbly escort Effie Trinket (Elizabeth Banks), Katniss' little sister Prim (Willow Shields), and of course, her childhood love, Gale Hawthoren (Hemsworth).

The past winners of the Hunger Games are now all viewed as a threat to President Snow's evil administration, and they're now all in danger, as the districts of Panem fight to rebel against their murderous government. The odds are not in their favor indeed.

'Hunger Games' sequel photos reveal Katniss' next chapter -- and Jennifer Lawrence in a wetsuit

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, NBC News

"Catching Fire," the second film in "The Hunger Games" trilogy, comes out in one year -- on Nov. 22, 2013. The cast is currently filming in Maui, Hawaii, and here are some photos from the movie-in-progress.

    PacificCoastNews.com

Jennifer Lawrence filming a scene from "Catching Fire" in Hawaii.

Entertainment Weekly compared Lawrence's costume to "a wetsuit made out of a roller blade you owned in 1992."

    PacificCoastNews.com

    Lawrence takes up her bow.

"Catching Fire" begins after Katniss has won the Hunger Games and must take a victory tour of Panem's districts with co-winner Peeta. But they aren't through fighting for their lives. The Quarter Quell -- aka, the 75th annual Hunger Games, aka "Hunger Games All-Stars" -- rears its ugly head, because we can't have two more books in the "Hunger Games" series with no Hunger Games.

    PacificCoastNews.com

New characters will include Mags and Finnick. The photo above is believed to show Lawrence with Lynn Cohen, who plays Mags, an 80-something tribute.

New characters, of course, will be introduced in "Catching Fire." Lynn Cohen, 68, will play 80-year-old tribute Mags, from District 4. She volunteers for the games to replace Annie, the troubled true love of the other District 4 tribute, Finnick Odair (played by Sam Claflin).

'Honest' trailer for 'Hunger Games' pokes fun at film and stars

By Aaron Couch, The Hollywood Reporter

"The Hunger Games" has sold nearly 4 million DVDs and Blu-ray discs since hitting stories last week, but not everyone thinks the film lives up to the hype.

A video from Honest Trailers, which purports to advertise films as they really are, takes issue with Katniss’ (Jennifer Lawrence) ability to outwit other tributes by hanging out in trees and Peeta’s (Josh Hutcherson) ridiculously detailed cake decorating skills, and asks why the "much hotter" Gale (Liam Hemsworth) is not Katniss’ first choice.

VIDEO: 'The Hunger Games' premiere red carpet interviews

Amassing more than a quarter of a million plays, the parody trailer mercilessly raises a slew of additional questions moviegoers may have been asking themselves, including plot points from Suzanne Collins' novel that didn't make it to the big screen. (Where's the Avox?)

'Twilight,' 'Hunger Games,' Taylor Swift win big at 2012 Teen Choice Awards

    Mario Anzuoni / REUTERS

Taylor Lautner, Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson at the Teen Choice Awards.

    By Bruna Nessif, E! Online

Who missed out on the surfboard giveaway?

Sunday night we watched this year's hottest celebs get honored by the fans as Demi Lovato and Kevin McHale hosted the 2012 Teen Choice Awards along with the sounds of DJ Pauly D.

If you missed it, don't start freaking out, because we put together some highlights, along with the list of winners, right here for you.

READ: Kim Kardashian and Kanye West's date night in Miami!

Best Opening: The entire cast of "Step Up Revolution" flipping, breakdancing and crumping on stage to get us ready for tonight's show totally worked. They even made some audience members swoon -- including Taylor Swift, who got a kiss on the hand.

Worst Flashback: And by worst, we mean for McHale, but it was great for us. Did you know the "Glee" star was in a boy band?! Yep, we even got to see some old NLT (Not Like Them) footage and then the actor gave us his own impromptu "audition" to Lovato. He totally has the "X Factor."

GALLERY: 2012 Teen Choice Awards arrivals

Best Entourage: Choice Comedian winner Ellen DeGeneres took the stage with the coolest (and cutest) "hype girls" -- Sophia Grace and Rosie. Their excitement was adorable and got even better when they found out they won Choice Web Stars. Of course, Sophia Grace was ecstatic and Rosie didn't seem fazed at all.

READ: Happy Birthday, Selena Gomez! Justin Bieber's ladylove turns 20

Worst Hairstyle: We're not sure how Demi constructed that ponytail of hers (duct tape maybe?), but it looks like she got the idea from some "Street Fighter" character. When she finally took it down, we noticed a blue ombre thing happening. Not sure how we feel about that, either.

Best Return to the Stage: No Doubt performed their comeback hit single "Settle Down," and although it wasn't some crazy theatric performance, we liked it, because it was real. Gwen Stefani (does she age?!) actually sang and rocked the crowd. They've still got it.

Worst Disappointment: Unfortunately, Channing Tatum wasn't there to accept his award with Jonah Hill for their flick "21 Jump Street." And here we were secretly hoping that, since Magic Mike costar Adam Rodriguez helped present the award, they would bust into a dance on stage together. Wishful thinking.

Best Undercover Weapon: Did you guys catch Flo Rida's microphone? It had a huge embellished set of wings on there that could easily be some sort of shield or self-defense aid if things got crazy.

Worst Ending: As usual, Justin Bieber rocked his performance and offered amazing choreography to keep us focused. So what happened that made us deem this the worst ending? The fact that it ended! We could have continued watching him all night.

Best Appearance: The "Twilight" Saga isn't over just yet. As we anxiously wait for "Breaking Dawn - Part 2" to release this fall, we got to see Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner accept the Ultimate Choice Award after an incredible movie montage that got us that much more excited for the next film. Oh, and did you know "Twilight" has won 41 Teen Choice Awards?

Worst Pants: Sorry, McHale, but those jellyfish-print pants are just not working for us. But we do like how it inspired you and Demi to start shaking your booties on each other. More of that, please.

Best Backup: This summer's biggest hit "Call Me Maybe" by Carly Rae Jepsen was the final performance of the night, and she was accompanied by a video of fans and celebs singing along to the song. We kinda loved that.

'Hunger Games' to battle 'Bridesmaids' at MTV Movie Awards

    By Piya Sinha-Roy, Reuters

LOS ANGELES -- "The Hunger Games" and "Bridesmaids" will battle for the upcoming MTV Movie Awards as each landed eight nominations on Tuesday to edge out "The Twilight Saga," which picked up only two nods for the widely-watched television program.

    Murray Close / AP

    "The Hunger Games"

Post-apocalyptic action film "The Hunger Games," which has stormed box offices with $600 million in ticket sales, earned nods for movie of the year and best cast. Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth landed in the best actress, actor and breakthrough performance categories, respectively.

Vote for your favorite film below

Not to be outdone in the hunt for MTV's golden box of popcorn trophy, female-led comedy "Bridesmaids" picked up nominations for movie of the year and best cast, while the film's writer and star Kristen Wiig scored best actress and best comedic performance nods.

Lawrence and Wiig will be up against Emma Stone, Emma Watson and Rooney Mara for best actress, while Hutcherson will be competing with Channing Tatum, Daniel Radcliffe, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Ryan Gosling for best actor.

Joining "Hunger Games" and "Bridesmaids" in the best movie race is civil-rights drama "The Help," the final installment of the "Harry Potter" films, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2," and "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1."

"The Twilight Saga" picked up only one other nod in the best kiss category for stars Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson, proving to be a snub after the popular series' third film, "Eclipse," led with eight nominations and five wins last year.

    Universal Pictures

    "Bridesmaids."

Stewart and Pattinson have strong contenders in the best kiss category this year from Lawrence and Hutcherson in "The Hunger Games," Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams in "The Vow," Rupert Grint and Emma Watson in "Harry Potter," and Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone in "Crazy, Stupid, Love."

The MTV Movie Awards, which this year take place in Los Angeles on June 3, annually are among the youth-oriented cable TV channel's most-watched programs, and they serve as a launch pad for many of Hollywood's movie summer blockbuster films aimed mostly at young audiences.

Unlike film awards from industry and critics groups, the MTV show offers irreverent categories like best kiss and best fight, which this year includes nominees from "21 Jump Street," "Harry Potter," "The Hunger Games," "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol" and "Warrior."

    Follow @ msnbc_ent

Fans vote online in 12 categories and a group of directors pick the winner of the breakthrough performance category, where Hemsworth will compete with Elle Fanning, Melissa McCarthy, Rooney Mara and Shailene Woodley.

New categories for 2012 include best movie cast, best music, best on-screen dirtbag and gut-wrenching performance, which features nominations from "21 Jump Street," "Bridesmaids," "Drive," "The Help" and "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol."

While MTV has yet to announce a host for the 2012 Movie Awards, New York indie-pop band fun. will be performing at the show.

'Think Like a Man' overtakes 'Hunger Games' at box office

    Sony Pictures

    By Reuters

The box office competition finally overwhelmed "The Hunger Games" as the romantic comedy "Think Like a Man" beat expectations with a chart-topping $33.0 million in U.S. and Canadian ticket sales over the weekend.

Love story "The Lucky One" also exceeded forecasts to finish second with $22.8 million from Friday through Sunday, according to studio estimates. The two films pushed the blockbuster "Hunger Games" to third, ending its four-week streak at No. 1.

"Think Like a Man" is based on comedian Steve Harvey's best-selling, non-fiction relationship guide "Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man."

The movie follows four couples trying to work out various issues and stars Gabrielle Union, Kevin Hart, Michael Ealy, Romany Malco, hip-hop singer Chris Brown and Oscar-nominated actress Taraji P. Henson. Harvey was executive producer and has a small role playing himself.

Video: Watch the 'Think Like a Man' trailer

The film cost a modest $13 million to make, and received positive feedback in pre-release screenings, said Rory Bruer, president of worldwide distribution for Sony Corp's Sony Pictures studio.

"We definitely felt like we had a hit coming," Bruer said. Still, the weekend performance "exceeded everyone's expectations," he said.

Audiences gave "Think Like a Man" an "A" grade in polling by survey firm CinemaScore.

"The Lucky One" tells the story of a U.S. Marine who returns from his third tour of duty in Iraq, convinced that the one thing that kept him safe and alive was a photograph of a beautiful woman he found in the rubble of war.

It also was based on a book, a 2008 best-seller from well-known "Notebook" author Nicholas Sparks. The movie stars Zac Efron and Taylor Schilling and cost about $25 million to produce.

Efron's female fan base helped the movie beat forecasts. Fifty-seven percent of moviegoers polled said the actor was their top reason for seeing the film, said Jeff Goldstein, executive vice president of domestic distribution for Time Warner Inc's Warner Bros. studio.

    Follow @ msnbc_ent

"The Lucky One" added $3.8 million from nine international markets, bringing its global debut to $26.6 million.

"Hunger Games," the smash hit about an oppressive society's televised teen death match, took in an estimated $14.5 million at U.S. and Canadian theaters during the weekend. Global sales for the film from Lions Gate Entertainment Corp reached $572.7 million since its release.

The weekend's other new movie, nature documentary "Chimpanzee," finished in fourth place with $10.2 million. It scored the highest opening among four films released by Walt Disney Co's Disneynature film unit, which makes wildlife movies and supports conservation efforts.

Comedy "The Three Stooges," from News Corp's 20th Century Fox studio, finished fifth with $9.2 million.

Also this weekend, action movie "Battleship" pulled in $58.4 million during its second weekend in international markets and brought its total to $129.6 million. The movie from Comcast Corp's Universal Pictures opens in the United States and Canada on May 18.

Jennifer Lawrence slammed by PETA for squirrel-skinning joke

    Dimitrios Kambouris / Getty Images

    Jennifer Lawrence

    By Natalie Finn, E! Online

This isn't the PETA Jennifer Lawrence wants to be messing around with.

The animal-rights organization was rather annoyed by the actress saying "screw PETA" in response to Rolling Stone's questions about the infamous squirrel-skinning scene in her breakout film, "Winter's Bone."

"I should say it wasn't real, for PETA -- but screw PETA," joked Lawrence, whose fake hunting skills also took center stage in "The Hunger Games."

But now People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is out to remind her that even just the idea of killing furry creatures is no laughing matter.

MORE: Battle of the Celebrity Barbies: Katniss Everdeen vs. Kate Middleton

"She's young and the plight of animals somehow hasn't yet touched her heart," PETA president Ingrid Newkirk said in a statement Tuesday.

"As Henry David Thoreau said,'The squirrel you kill in jest, dies in earnest.' When people kill animals, it is the animals who are 'screwed,' not PETA, and one day I hope she will try to make up for any pain she might cause any animal who did nothing but try to eke out a humble existence in nature."

    Follow @ TODAY_ent

But Lawrence, who did have to learn how to realistically skin a squirrel for "Winter's Bone" and ended up with an Oscar nomination, didn't enjoy it or anything.

The Kentucky native told E! News in June 2010 that a friend of her brother's demonstrated the icky skill for her. "He cut it open and then I went and cried in the house and let him finish," she said.

But maybe PETA has already decided not to go to war with the hottest young star around....

GALLERY: "Hunger Games" stars: red carpet rewind (we don't see any fur...)

"That was just a throw-away remark," Newkirk added later in the day to E! News, "and we have our bet on Jennifer ending up joining the ranks of other young celebrities like Natalie Portman, Lea Michele, and Kellan Lutz who are using their influence to help animals."

And if she wants to get naked for the cause like Eva Mendes or Olivia Munn, you won't hear any objections from ... well, probably anybody.

'Hunger Games' Katniss Barbie is well-armed

    Mattel

The "Hunger Games" Barbie doll will be available in August.

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, NBC News

Want to reenact "The Hunger Games" at home? Mattel has now revealed photos of the previously announced Katniss Everdeen Barbie doll.

Mini Katniss has her bow, quiver of arrows, thick braid and a serious look that befits the District 12 tribute. And of course, she sports her mockingjay pin on her lapel.

While she does have lovely lashes and pursed pink lips, this Barbie looks very much like Jennifer Lawrence in the movie.

The doll will be available starting in August, tied to the release of "The Hunger Games" DVD, for $30. It's meant for the adult collector, not your average Barbie buyer.

And what does Lawrence herself think of her mini-Me? She told Hitfix that when she was sent a photo by the studio, her reaction was "I'm a choking hazard?"

For $1.4 million, you can buy District 12 from 'The Hunger Games'

Panem's District 12, the bleak mining district where Katniss Everdeen lived in "The Hunger Games," didn't exactly look like a cozy place to make your home. But if you're a true fan, with a Capitol-sized bank account, you can do just that.

What once was a mill town's company store stood in for Peeta's family bakery.

Wade Shepherd, 83, is selling 72 acres of property in Hildebran, N.C., and his land stood in for Katniss' home district in the blockbuster film. But Katniss herself could never afford it. The price tag is a cool $1.4 million.

The land Shepherd is selling is the Henry River Mill Village, once a bustling mill area that emptied after its factory burned in 1977. Since the mill was destroyed, only about 20 buildings remain, including the company store, which stood in for Peeta's family bakery.

Since the movie’s March 21 release, fans have stalked the property to get a glimpse of what was home for the film’s primary characters, Katniss, Peeta and Gale.

Shepherd told the Associated Press, "I'm getting too many visitors…Day and night, they're driving through, taking pictures, getting out and walking. I'm just bombarded with people."

Shepherd told AP he didn’t think he could make enough money to make the area worth opening as a tourist attraction, so he will sell off his property instead.

The rest of the area has moved quickly to profit on the burgeoning tourist industry that came with “The Hunger Games.” Lionsgate Films reportedly invested over $60 million to shoot in North Carolina, and since filming wrapped, VisitNC.com has put together a four-day tour leading fans to District 12.

Travelers can even order eggs, Josh Hutcherson-style, at the Early Girl Eatery, where the actor was interviewed by Entertainment Weekly. (The restaurant isn't revealing the preparation technique, but reportedly will make the eggs as Hutcherson had them for those who ask.)

Another company known as “Hunger Games Fan Tours” enlists actors to re-enact scenes and engage participants in archery, camouflage, and fire-building. The reaction has been overwhelmingly positive, according to Leigh Trapp, co-creator of the project.

“What we really found was that kids loved it, and so did the adults,” Trapp told the Asheville Citizen-Times. “The adults really became kids again. It’s like going to summer camp. You form intimate bonds with people who are like-minded and want to participate.”

LOS ANGELES -- "The Hunger Games" dominated box office charts in the United States and Canada for the second straight weekend, adding to its record-setting debut a week ago.

"Hunger Games" pulled in $61.1 million from Friday through Sunday at domestic theaters, according to studio estimates released on Sunday. The movie about teens forced to fight to the death has grossed $251 million in North America (United States and Canada) during its first 10 days of release, distributor Lions Gate Entertainment said.

"Hunger Games" stormed into theaters last weekend with the third-highest grossing domestic opening in film history and biggest for a non-sequel.

Second place for this weekend belonged to action sequel "Wrath of the Titans" with $34.2 million. "Mirror Mirror," a family-oriented Snow White story, brought in $19 million, taking third place.

"Wrath of the Titans" was released by Time Warner Inc's Warner Bros. Privately held Relativity Media distributed "Mirror Mirror" in the United States and Alliance Films released the movie in Canada.
