'Catching Fire' teaser trailer lights up MTV Movie Awards

    By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, TODAY
Jennifer Lawrence wasn't at Sunday night's MTV Movie Awards, but her presence was felt anyway. Not only did she win the best kiss award (sharing the honor with "Silver Linings Playbook" co-star Bradley Cooper), but she was seen in the "Catching Fire" teaser trailer premiere.
    Watch on YouTube

"Catching Fire" is the second film in the "Hunger Games" series, and hits theaters Nov. 22. Co-star Liam Hemsworth introduced the teaser later in the awards to much applause.

The second movie takes place after Katniss (Lawrence) and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) have won the Hunger Games, but they're far from safe. As seen in the trailer, President Snow (an evil Donald Sutherland) isn't about to let them live happily ever after.

"She has to be eliminated," he says of Katniss.

Plenty of familiar faces return in the teaser, including former winner Haymitch (Woody Harrelson), bubbly escort Effie Trinket (Elizabeth Banks), Katniss' little sister Prim (Willow Shields), and of course, her childhood love, Gale Hawthoren (Hemsworth).

The past winners of the Hunger Games are now all viewed as a threat to President Snow's evil administration, and they're now all in danger, as the districts of Panem fight to rebel against their murderous government. The odds are not in their favor indeed.

'Hunger Games' sequel photos reveal a troubled, thoughtful Katniss

    By Randee Dawn, TODAY contributor

It'll be several months yet before audiences get a second glimpse of Jennifer Lawrence in action as Katniss Everdeen in "Catching Fire," but a few more stills from the film have been released -- and as readers of the books know, her deep-in-thought look is completely on-point.

In the new photos, Lawrence has returned home to District 12 and is giving a hug to her sister Primrose (played by Willow Shields), but there's a distant look in her eyes.

Jack Nicholson, 75, flirts with Oscar-winner Jennifer Lawrence, 22

    Jennifer Lawrence

    By Cody Delistraty, TODAY contributor

Even though Jennifer Lawrence fell on her way up to accept her best actress Oscar for “Silver Linings Playbook,” perhaps the most embarrassing moment for the 22-year-old came after the show.

While ABC’s George Stephanopoulous was interviewing Lawrence in a post-show wrap-up, three-time Oscar winner Jack Nicholson, 75, came up behind her and said, “You did such a beautiful job,” before adding “I would love to interview you.”

Nicholson, who had earlier co-presented the best picture award with Michelle Obama, added to the flirting when he told Lawrence, “You look like an old girlfriend” to which the actress gamely quipped “Oh really, do I look like a new girlfriend?”

Nicholson didn’t miss a beat. “I’ve thought about it," he said.

With a smile, the surprised actress exclaimed “Oh my God!” and buried her head in her hands.

She really shouldn't have been surprised. On a night where she pulled in the best actress award, flipped off the press room, and nearly fell on her face, getting hit on by someone old enough to be her grandfather was just par for the course.

Jennifer Lawrence disses Oscar nominees on 'Saturday Night Live'

By Aaron Couch, The Hollywood Reporter

    NBC

Jennifer Lawrence dissed fellow Oscar nominee Naomi Watts (inset) on "Saturday Night Live."

Jennifer Lawrence kicked off "Saturday Night Live’s" 2013 by putting her fellow best actress Oscar nominees in their places.

Many in the blogosphere believed her saying “I beat Meryl!” during her Golden Globes speech Sunday was a dig at Meryl Streep, an interpretation Lawrence denied. But she had no qualms about bashing her Oscar competition, using her opening monologue to say something nasty about each of her rivals.

Video from THR: 'SNL's' 5 most popular 2012 clips on Hulu

Jessica Chastain ("Zero Dark Thirty"): “Jessica Chastain? More like Jessica ain’t winning an Oscar on my watch.”

Twitter Follow The Clicker on Twitter

Naomi Watts: “You were in 'The Impossible.' You know what else is impossible? You beating me on Oscar night.”

Quvenzhane Wallis ("Beasts of the Southern Wild"): “What you talkin' about Wallace? The alphabet called. They want their letters back.”

Emmanuelle Riva ("Amour"): “An 85-year-old French lady. Yeah. I think I can take you.”

But don’t be hasty with those torches and pitchforks. Lawrence followed up each dig with something nice about her competitors.

"SNL" gave news junkies what they wanted in its cold open, tackling not one, not two, but three of the week’s big stories. A detailed description of what went down can be read here, but sufficed to say, Lance Armstrong, Notre Dame star Manti Te'o and Jodie Foster’s much-talked about Golden Globes speech got the "SNL" treatment.

More from THR: Fred Armisen 'absolutely' excited for Bieber on 'SNL'

Like host Jeremy Renner tackling "The Avengers" last year, Lawrence took on "The Hunger Games" in a sketch taking place after (spoiler alert) Katniss and Peeta win the games. ESPN-style journalists ask tough questions about the franchise (Where’s the chemistry between Katniss and Peeta?) and the sketch itself asks why the characters in a movie called "The Hunger Games" look so well fed.

The questions are a bit old at this point, but the bit was amusing enough.

"SNL" also skewered another franchise in the works, "The Hobbit," with an ad revealing Peter Jackson has decided three movies won't be enough to achieve his vision of the classic children’s book. His solution? He's dividing the remaining two "Hobbit" films into 18 movies.

Here’s one of the film's titles:

"The Hobbit 3: Shoot. I Just Realized We Forgot Something Back At The Shire. Mind If We Double Back?”

This is mundane Middle-earth to the Nth degree. Perhaps Tolkienites bored by the hour it takes for "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" to leave the Shire should take comfort in this sketch. It could have been much, much worse.

Lawrence was relegated to sidekick status in a number of sketches, playing the intern on an obnoxious morning radio show in one bit and the sex kitten in an odd foreign language scene in another.

Likewise, the episode’s final sketch sees Lawrence play a Civil War-era woman pining for her soldier suitor. While she writes him flowery dispatches, he composes letters using modern slang.

THR: Jennifer Lawrence on 'Hunger Games' stunts

“Hey what’s up. I miss your body so much. Oh my God, you’re so hot,” reads one. He becomes obsessed with receiving a “t-- pic,” something he asks for often in subsequent letters. Needless to say, things don’t work out for the couple.

"SNL" is new next week on NBC with "The Voice’s" Adam Levine hosting and musical guest Kendrick Lamar.

Bradley Cooper: Date Jennifer Lawrence? I could be her father!

    Getty Images file

    By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, TODAY

Yes, they played a couple in the Oscar-nominated "Silver Linings Playbook," but the romance was on-screen only. And Bradley Cooper isn't going for any of that May-December stuff. When asked by Entertainment Tonight at the Golden Globes if he was dating "Playbook" co-star Jennifer Lawrence, he had a clear answer.

"No no no no no," he told Nancy O'Dell of Entertainment Tonight. "Not even close. I mean, first of all, I could be her father."

He also told O'Dell, "We've done two movies together. If it didn't happen by now, it's not going to happen."

O'Dell later interviewed Lawrence, who attended the Globes despite a 100-degree fever, but was still able to laugh off the romance rumors. "Oh yes, we're in a relationship," she joked. "Apparently things are heating up."

She went on to agree with Cooper that the two weren't romantically inclined. "I concur," she said.

Cooper is 38, Lawrence 22. They also play a couple in the upcoming film "Serena," about a Depression-era timber baron and his wife who learn she can't have children. "Serena" is scheduled for release sometime this year.

'Argo,' 'Silver Linings Playbook' win at Critics' Choice Awards

    By Chris Michaud , Reuters

Ben Affleck's Iran hostage drama "Argo," "Lincoln" star Daniel Day-Lewis and "Zero Dark Thirty"'s Jessica Chastain were among big winners at the Critics' Choice Movie Awards on Thursday, taking honors for best picture, actor and actress, with Affleck nabbing the prize for best director.

Director Ben Affleck accepts the best director award for the movie "Argo" at the Critics' Choice Awards in Santa Monica, Calif., on Thursday.

The all-star "Silver Linings Playbook" swept the comedy awards, winning best comedy film, best comedy actor for Bradley Cooper and best comedy actress, which went to Jennifer Lawrence.

The 250-member Broadcast Film Critics Association, the largest film critics organization in the United States and Canada, also gave the film its best acting ensemble prize at the event in Santa Monica, Calif.

Affleck, known mostly as actor and who was overlooked for directing "Argo" earlier on Thursday when the Academy Award nominations were announced, began his acceptance with the quip: "I would like to thank the academy," before adding "I'm kidding. This is the one that counts."

Day-Lewis won for his acclaimed performance in the title role of Steven Spielberg's historical drama "Lincoln," while Chastain took the prize for "Zero Dark Thirty," about the hunt for Osama Bin Laden.

Actress Jessica Chastain accepts the award for best actress for "Zero Dark Thirty."

It was one of only two awards for "Lincoln," which led the Oscar nominations with 12. The Oscar runner-up, "Life of Pi," won only two technical awards.

Lawrence took home two awards, also winning best actress in an action movie for "The Hunger Games."

"Critics aren't so bad," she said as she accepted the award, later riffing on the line when she won her second award, for "Silver Linings Playbook," saying "Seriously, I love critics."

Many stars who were nominated just hours earlier for Oscars, Hollywood's top honors, were on hand, including "Les Miserables" star Hugh Jackman, Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway, who won the award for best supporting actress for "Les Miserables."

Best supporting actor went to Philip Seymour Hoffman for "The Master."

Actor Bradley Cooper accepts the award for best actor in a comedy movie for "Silver Linings Playbook."

Director David O. Russell dedicated the "Silver Linings" award to his son, saying "I made it to give him hope," adding, "That's my silver lining."

European director Michael Haneke's drama "Amour," about an aging couple struggling with failing health and mortality and which scored several major Oscar nominations on Thursday, won the award for best foreign language film.

The prize for best sci-fi/horror film went to "Looper," while "Searching for Sugarman" won best documentary.

The screenwriting awards were won by Quentin Tarantino for his original screenplay for "Django Unchained" and Tony Kushner who adapted the screenplay for "Lincoln."

British singer Adele's song "Skyfall" from the James Bond film of the same name won best song, and star Daniel Craig was named best actor in a action film. The film also won best action movie.

Actress Quvenzhane Wallis poses with the best young actor or actress award backstage for her role in "Beasts of the Southern Wild."

Nine-year old Quvenzhane Wallis, star of "Beasts of the Southern Wild" who became the youngest best actress Oscar nominee in history on Thursday, was named best young actor or actress. She accepted her award clutching a pink-cased electronic device, from which she read her speech as she grinned broadly.

The awards were handed out ahead of Sunday's Golden Globes and a slew of other award shows that narrow the field for the Oscars, which will be held on Feb. 24.

Writer-producer-director Judd Apatow received a special "genius" award created to honor "an unprecedented demonstration of excellence in the cinematic arts."

    By Us Weekly

Another night, another awards show! Just one day after Hollywood's biggest stars attended the People's Choice Awards, many of the same actresses -- and a few new ones -- walked the red carpet at the 18th Annual Critics' Choice Movie Awards in Santa Monica, Calif., Thursday.

Best actress in an action movie winner Jennifer Lawrence stole the show in a black Prabal Gurung gown, which she paired with Jimmy Choo heels,  Chopard jewelry and a Roger Vivier bag. Presenter Nina Dobrev, meanwhile, rocked a fashion-forward emerald cocktail dress and black peep-toe heels.

Emily Blunt looked glamorous in a cream-colored Miu Miu dress, Prada shoes and Graziela jewelry; she carried a JustFab purse. "Zero Dark Thirty"'s Jessica Chastain looked red hot wearing a Prada dress, Harry Winston jewels and Jimmy Choo shoes.

The girls from "Les Miserables" -- Anne Hathaway and Amanda Seyfred -- wore quite different looks. Best supporting actress winner Hathaway slipped into a slinky spaghetti strap dress, while Seyfried took a sartorial risk in a Marios Schwab dress, Roger Vivier shoes and Lorraine Schwartz jewelry.

"The Impossible"'s Naomi Watts wore a strapless Emilio Pucci gown that showed off her perfect physique, while "This Is 40"'s Leslie Mann selected a bubblegum pink Honor dress.

    Jennifer Lawrence: Acting is 'stupid'

Ellen Von Unwerth / Vanity Fair

    By Courtney Hazlett, TODAY

In what could be a case of biting the hand that feeds you, actress Jennifer Lawrence has some frank opinions to share about her craft. "Not to sound rude, but [acting] is stupid," Lawrence tells Vanity Fair in their February issue. "Everybody’s like, 'How can you remain with a level head?' And I’m like, 'Why would I ever get cocky? I’m not saving anybody’s life. There are doctors who save lives and firemen who run into burning buildings. I’m making movies. It’s stupid.'"

Lawrence, who described herself in the piece as "vastly uneducated" -- she did not attend high school -- goes into greater detail about why she decided on her "stupid" profession.

The "Hunger Games" star recalls the first time she ever read a script (for a commercial audition), and knowing then that acting is what she wanted to do.

"This is the first time I’ve ever understood anything. I was 14. And my brothers were star athletes. And one of them was a straight-A student," she told Vanity Fair. "I always felt like I sucked at everything, that I could never find the thing that I liked. I auditioned and I probably sucked, but I had decided 100 percent that this is what I wanted to do."

One thing is certain: despite how Lawrence thinks she did on that audition, she's got chops now. Lawrence is nominated for a Golden Globe for her role in "Silver Linings Playbook." In 2011, she received both Globe and Oscar nominations for her role in "Winter's Bone."

Jennifer Lawrence: 'Nothing makes me feel better than junk food and reality TV'

    Marie Claire

    By Us Weekly

Jennifer Lawrence may be an Oscar-nominated actress, but given the opportunity, she'd rather relax at home than walk a red carpet.

Appearing on the January cover of Marie Claire South Africa, the 22-year-old "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo" fan explains why she prefers to keep things low-key when she's not on set.

    PHOTOS: Jennifer Lawrence's style evolution

"I don't like going out that much. I'm kind of an old lady. After it's 11, I'm like, 'Don't these kids ever get tired?' When I'm out, I think about my couch. Like, 'It would be awesome to be on it right now. I bet there's an episode of 'Dance Moms' on. Am I missing a new episode of 'Keeping Up with the Kardashians'?'" the "Silver Linings Playbook" star tells the magazine. "I'm just stressed by the idea of missing them."

PHOTOS: 'The Hunger Games' movie stills

Lawrence, who lives in a two-bedroom apartment in L.A., prefers to entertain friends at home. "I like people to come over to my place," she says. "It's like a reality TV show cave. I just learned how to work TiVo. That changed my life. Reality TV is my silver lining. At the end of the day there's probably nothing that makes me feel better than junk food and reality TV."

VIDEO: Remember this 'Hunger Games' scene?

Attending A-list events, Lawrence says, is more stressful than it looks. "They are not fun," the Hunger Games star tells Marie Claire South Africa. "I'm really bad at walking in heels. I'm more of a flats girl and I don't like people shouting at me, and that's pretty much all it is. Just screaming."

Jennifer Lawrence named 'most desirable' woman in international poll

    By Reuters

Jennifer Lawrence, you are the world's most desirable woman, according to an international poll released on Tuesday by the website AskMen.

"The Hunger Games" star rose to the top of the list from No. 47 last year on the heels of the box-office smash while buffing her credibility as a quirky, sex-mad young widow in the independent film "Silver Linings Playbook," AskMen editor in chief James Bassil said.

"Overall, there's a sense that she's a little more authentic than other actors," Bassil said, adding that the public still knows too little about the 22-year-old actress to form a negative opinion.

"She's fresh because we haven't seen her all over the gossip pages for the past three or four years," Bassil said.

Lawrence bumped last year's winner, Sofia Vergara of "Modern Family" fame, down to No. 12, while reality star Kim Kardashian plummeted to No. 98.

The poll surveyed 2.4 million readers asking them to vote on which celebrity they would choose as a prospective partner, according to the website, which is a unit of News Corp. The top 99 are then compiled into the annual poll.

Rounding out the top five were actress Mila Kunis, model Kate Upton, R&B star Rihanna and "Crazy, Stupid, Love" actress Emma Stone.

Bassil said that lots of publicity often correlates to higher desirability ranking from men, but too many headlines can leave men looking elsewhere.

The most notable drop was socialite Kardashian, who fell 90 places from last year's No. 8 ranking.

"Kim Kardashian is petering off and basically dropping off the list at this point even as she's become more visible," Bassil said.

Youth also appears to have taken a backseat in men's tastes as this year's rankings feature a handful of women over 40.

"We've seen that increasingly over the past two or three years," Bassil said. "Like most things in life, attractiveness is extending into middle age.... Who knows? In 20 years we could see 60-year-olds on the list."

    Follow @ TODAY_ent

Those over the age of 40 on the list include U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama, 48; comedienne Sarah Silverman, 42; actress Lucy Liu, 44; and British actress Rachel Weisz, 42.

New Yahoo! President and Chief Executive Marissa Mayer was the only business executive to make list at No. 59.

The full list can be seen at www.askmen.com.

'Hunger Games' sequel photos reveal Katniss' next chapter -- and Jennifer Lawrence in a wetsuit

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, NBC News

"Catching Fire," the second film in "The Hunger Games" trilogy, comes out in one year -- on Nov. 22, 2013. The cast is currently filming in Maui, Hawaii, and here are some photos from the movie-in-progress.

    PacificCoastNews.com

Jennifer Lawrence filming a scene from "Catching Fire" in Hawaii.

Entertainment Weekly compared Lawrence's costume to "a wetsuit made out of a roller blade you owned in 1992."

    PacificCoastNews.com

    Lawrence takes up her bow.

"Catching Fire" begins after Katniss has won the Hunger Games and must take a victory tour of Panem's districts with co-winner Peeta. But they aren't through fighting for their lives. The Quarter Quell -- aka, the 75th annual Hunger Games, aka "Hunger Games All-Stars" -- rears its ugly head, because we can't have two more books in the "Hunger Games" series with no Hunger Games.

    PacificCoastNews.com

New characters will include Mags and Finnick. The photo above is believed to show Lawrence with Lynn Cohen, who plays Mags, an 80-something tribute.

New characters, of course, will be introduced in "Catching Fire." Lynn Cohen, 68, will play 80-year-old tribute Mags, from District 4. She volunteers for the games to replace Annie, the troubled true love of the other District 4 tribute, Finnick Odair (played by Sam Claflin).

Jennifer Lawrence: Weight obsession is a 'dark cloud' over Hollywood

    By Ree Hines, TODAY contributor

Actress Jennifer Lawrence is all too familiar with Hollywood's obsession and expectations when it comes to the waistlines of female stars. Shortly after she was cast as Katniss in "The Hunger Games," she faced criticism from those who thought she was too curvy to play the character.

That didn't matter to Lawrence. In a recent interview with Elle magazine, she stressed that she didn't want young girls skipping dinner "to look like Katniss." She even claimed that by Hollywood standards she's "obese."

And as she told NBC’s Andrea Canning in an interview that aired Wednesday morning on TODAY, she doesn't plan to change in order to please Tinseltown.

"I've never really dieted or wanted to diet, or anything, and I just feel like, it's something that really overwhelms our industry in an unfortunate way," Lawrence explained. "It just kind of becomes this distracting dark cloud."

A cloud that she finds particularly disturbing.

"I grew up with tabloids and seeing it on TV, and who's losing this much weight, how to lose this weight this fast, and it's just … it's kind of gross," she said. "And I'm just ready for it to stop."

Until then, Lawrence is happy to buck that trend. And that's not the only Hollywood standard she avoids.

Lawrence, who's currently the focus of early Oscar buzz for her role opposite Bradley Cooper in "Silver Linings Playbook," doesn't have any interest in participating in the usual young-Hollywood hijinks.

"I'm very boring, and (the paparazzi) know that," she said. "Like, all the paparazzi leave my house at like, 5.pm., because they know I'm not going anywhere."

Those who would like a glimpse of the star can get it Wednesday, as "Silver Linings Playbook" opens in theaters nationwide.
