Kristen Stewart, One Direction win twice at Kids' Choice Awards

    By Jill Serjeant, Reuters

LOS ANGELES -- Green slime spewed furiously at the Kids' Choice Awards on Saturday, where "Twilight Saga" star Kristen Stewart and British boy band One Direction won two awards apiece.

Stewart, 22, escaped the slime but plunged her hands into the green goo, saying she "felt like I have finally found my kindergartner self," as she accepted trophies for movie actress and favorite female butt kicker.

Organizers said more than 350 million votes were cast online in more than 20 categories, spanning film, television, books, music and sport for the stunt-filled annual award show on youth channel Nickelodeon.

Hosted by "Transformers" actor Josh Duhamel, who is married to singer Fergie, the show in Los Angeles featured performances by Pitbull and Christina Aguilera, as well as Ke$ha.

Johnny Depp and Katy Perry accepted orange blimp-shaped trophies for favorite female singer and movie actor respectively and both stars had words of wisdom for the audience of kids and young teens.

"This is such a cool award ... stay safe, stay in school, don't do drugs," Perry told them. Depp said he was "truly honored and humbled. Thank you for what you are, which is the future."

Selena Gomez, 20, the ex-girlfriend of pop star Justin Bieber, took the female TV actress award for her Disney Channel series "Wizards of Waverly Place," even though the show came to an end more than a year ago.

Bieber, who is on tour in Europe, was voted favorite male singer and was among several stars who did not make it to accept their award in person

No-shows included One Direction, who are also on tour and who won for favorite music group and song for "What Makes You Beautiful," "X Factor" judge Simon Cowell (favorite villain), and Ross Lynch, 17, who was named favorite TV actor for Disney Channel's pop star series "Austin & Ally."

Sandra Bullock, Neil Patrick Harris, Duhamel, Pitbull, Nick Cannon, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and dozens of audience members got covered in slime gushing out from water cannons, presenter's podiums, ceilings, and even the tail of a fake gymnastic horse.

Other awards went to Nickelodeon's "Victorious" for top TV show, "The Hunger Games" for favorite movie, "Wreck-It Ralph" for top animated movie, and race car driver Danica Patrick and basketball player LeBron James for top athletes.

The Kids Choice Awards will be broadcast around the world in more than 25 languages, Nickelodeon said.

'Lone Ranger' trailer shows Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer keeping the peace

    By Natalie Finn, E! Online

The Lone Ranger rides again. Though, this time he's got Johnny Depp by his side, so you really can't blame us for giving Tonto more attention than he may be used to.

    Follow @ NBCNewsEnt

Armie Hammer, who plays the titular peacekeeper in "The Lone Ranger," Disney's trouble-plagued update of the classic serial, brought the brand-new trailer with him on his visit to "The Tonight Show" Tuesday--and, so long as you're not a Clayton Moore purist, the sneak peek at the Gore Verbinski-directed adventure flick didn't disappoint.

This incarnation of The Lone Ranger was a long time coming

There are galloping horses kicking up dust, speeding trains, swinging-door saloons, Helena Bonham Carter wearing 19th-century fashions and, of course, the wild, wild West -- all of which is in danger of falling prey to treachery and no-good varmints unless our masked hero and his trusty, makeup-caked right-hand-man do something about it.

Which they will, with the help of more Matrix-style gunplay than they had in the 1950s. And, at one point, Tonto hitches a ride on the underside of one of those hell-bent trains. Hi-yo, hang on tight!

Get more of the man behind the makeup (and sometimes in even more makeup) right here!

"The Lone Ranger,"  also starring Tom Wilkinson, Barry Pepper and Ruth Wilson, is due in theaters July 3, 2013.

Johnny Depp surprises parade-goers at Comanche Nation Fair

    By Sierra Marquina, E! Online

Well, it might not be a red carpet but hey, Johnny Depp isn't your typical celeb anyway! The low-key A-lister made a surprise appearance in Oklahoma today at the 21st Annual Comanche Nation Fair, where he served as grand marshal.

Check out Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer in "The Lone Ranger"!

Depp was named an honorary member of the tribe back in May due to his upcoming role as Tonto in The Lone Ranger.

The tribe kept Depp's appearance hush-hush to keep people from flocking to the parade solely for a glimpse of the actor.

Woman yelling 'I'm Jack Sparrow!' hijacks ferry

Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow.

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, NBC News

Jack Sparrow, as played so memorably by Johnny Depp in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie series, might be a pirate, but we kind of doubt he'd steal a passenger ferry and randomly crash it into other boats.

But that's just what a drunk British woman did last fall, according to the U.K. Telegraph, and she was claiming to be Jack Sparrow when she did it.

The newspaper reports that Alison Whelan, from Devon, England, climbed onto a moored double-decker ferry, unmoored it, and smashed it into a number of other vessels as she drifted away. But the best part? Whelan was reportedly yelling "I'm Jack Sparrow!" and "I'm a pirate!" as she stole the boat.

    Follow @ NBCNewsEnt

The article says Whelan had been "drinking Lambrini (an alcoholic beverage made from pears) and eating poisonous hallucinogenic plants" before boarding the ferry.

She reportedly also taunted the police from the water, saying ""What are you going to do now?" and "I believe this is out of your jurisdiction."

The BBC reports it took authorities an hour to catch the free-floating ferry.

Whelan later pled guilty to "aggravated vehicle taking" and was sentenced on Wednesday to 112 days in prison. Apparently walking the plank is not a punishment for would-be pirates in Britain.

Johnny Depp's ex Vanessa Paradis speaks out on love, fame, dating

Martin Bureau / AFP - Getty Images file

Vanessa Paradis and Johnny Depp in Cannes, France, in 2010.

    By Courtney Hazlett, TODAY

Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis were a notoriously private couple during their 14 years together, rarely speaking about their relationship. The couple split in June after months of speculation that there was trouble between them, and now Paradis is breaking her silence, speaking out about her thoughts on love, fame and dating.

"Love is the strongest and most fragile thing we have in life," Paradis tells Harper's Bazaar in the September issue. "Nothing is ever for sure, but when something in love doesn't work from the beginning, it's never going to work. Don't push it."

Paradis also make comments that allude to still being in love despite her relationship to Depp no longer being successful. "When you meet the love of your life, it's just obvious and natural and easier," she told the magazine. But, "you keep learning all the time. Sometimes you could be in an unhappy relationship; you are very much in love with someone, but it's making you unhappy and you think things can change and you can work it out."

    Slideshow: Johnny Depp

Depp and Paradis lived mostly in France during the time they were together, and had only recently relocated to Los Angeles when they split. Fame, Paradis said, is something she wasn't ready for. "I was for sure not prepared for fame when it happened, but nobody pushed me to do it. I wanted to sing, to dance, to work," she said.

Paradis makes no mention of starting to date again, but she did tell Harper's that she's got a type. "Well, my type is obviously creative," she said. "Creative, with burning eyes and a pretty mouth."

Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis split, publicist confirms

Martin Bureau / AFP - Getty Images file

Vanessa Paradis and Johnny Depp in 2010.

    By Courtney Hazlett, TODAY

After months of speculation that Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis' relationship was over, a publicist for Depp confirms the couple has split.

"Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis have amicably separated. Please respect their privacy and, more importantly, the privacy of their children," Depp's publicist said in a statement given first to Entertainment Tonight.

The couple have two children together, Lily-Rose, 13, and Jack, 10.

As recently as May, Depp was denying that he and his partner of 14 years had split. "The rumors are not true. They are absolutely not true," Depp told the U.K.'s Sun on the red carpet for the London premiere of "Dark Shadows."

While he was denying the split, it was noted that Paradis was conspicuously absent from the premiere, and she hadn't walked a red carpet with Depp for at least a year and a half.

    Follow @ TODAY_ent

People has reported that the couple drifted apart and were living "separate lives" after moving from France to Los Angeles.

The two first got together in 1998, when the two met serendipitously at the Costes Hotel in Paris.

The couple, who never officially wed, lived in France for much of their relationship; Depp recently told French magazine VSD (via People) that living there "has given me everything. A marvelous family and also an equilibrium which I missed enormously."

Happy birthday to me (and Johnny Depp, Natalie Portman and more famous people)

    By Kurt Schlosser, NBC News

If you're a big fan of Johnny Depp or Natalie Portman or Michael J. Fox, you might know that they all share a birthday today, June 9. I happen to know this because I share it with them. Yay, me!

    Getty Images (2), EPA

Johnny Depp (49), Natalie Portman (31) and Michael J. Fox (51) were all born on June 9.

It's not a big deal to share a birthday with a famous person. There are a lot of us and a few handfuls of them. Someone you know out there is always blowing out candles on the same day as someone you don't know but wish you did.

I did some digging around on June 9 birthdays for selfish reasons and found out that beyond Depp, Portman and Fox, I've got a big list of invites to make for the greatest party ever.

Looking past dozens of composers and soccer players I've never heard of, the list includes some impressive dead and living souls.

The Russian ruler Peter the Great was born on this date in 1672. He'll probably want to be in charge of the party seating chart. And the menu. And the coat check. And valet.

The bandleader Fred Waring (b. 1900) provided financial backing for the first electric blendor which holds his name to this day. Put that guy behind the bar.

Long before the transit of Venus this past week, German astronomer Johann Galle (b. 1812) was staring into space. He's credited with knowing what Neptune was before anyone else. If he leaves the table, look for him outside.

    Colin Archer / AP file

You like rock 'n' roll? You can thank Les Paul for inventing the solid body electric guitar.

The party will need a little music, of course. Let's see what composer Cole Porter (b. 1891), electric guitar god Les Paul (b. 1915) and Muse frontman Matthew Bellamy (b. 1978) can come up with. And feel free to ask Bellamy about his kid with Kate Hudson.

Looking for a little deep conversation at the party table? Saddle up next to Robert McNamara (b. 1916) and discuss Vietnam War startegy with the former secretary of defense under Presidents Kennedy and Johnson. But go watch "Fog of War" first, a top-notch documentary for sure.

Comedian Jackie Mason (b. 1936) is probably good for a few jokes. But if you'd rather talk sports, particularly basketball, you'll want to get some Q.T. with Dick Vitale (b. 1939), baby! You'll be a P.T. player by June 10.

Step away from the party and head to the TV room for a break. You'll find Donald Duck (b. 1934) cartoon reruns playing. June 9 is officially recognized as the character's birthday by Disney.

    Follow @ TODAY_ent

Speaking of cartoons, maybe Abraham Groening (b. 1991) can handle the invites. He's the son of "Simpsons" creator Matt Groening.

Depp (b. 1963), Portman (b. 1981) and Fox (b. 1961) will certainly command much of the attention at the party. But it's my party too, so you can talk to Depp only about "Edward Scissorhands." Ask Portman about "Hotel Chevalier." And Michael J. Fox can say whatever he wants about "Back to the Future." As long as he doesn't hand out these.

What famous person or people do you share a birthday with? Let us know over on Facebook.

Japan mayor: I wouldn't hire tattooed stars Johnny Depp, Lady Gaga

Miguel Villagran / Getty Images, file

Lady Gaga shows off her tattoo of a Rilke poem in Braunschweig, Germany, on November 7, 2009.

    By Arata Yamamoto, NBC News

TOKYO -- Even Hollywood stars Johnny Depp and Lady Gaga would not be welcome to work for the Japanese city of Osaka because of their tattoos, its mayor said amid a backlash over his stance against body art.

Mayor Toru Hashimoto this week said that public employees "should go to the private sector" if they want to keep their tattoos.

City authorities carried out a survey of their staff to ask whether they had any, whether they were normally concealed by clothing or not. More than 100 sanitation, public transport and other workers admitted they had tattoos.

However, Sayuri Ohashi, a lawyer who represents Osaka workers, defended the right of people to decorate their bodies.

"Whether one has a tattoo or not has nothing to do with their competence or skills," Ohashi said.

"There are different types of tattoos, there are those that are indeed linked to organized crime and others who have etchings on their bodies as mementos, such as for their lost child," she added.

    'Breach of labor law'
She added that getting employees to reveal information about their body was "a complete infringement of their rights."

"And if they try to pressure them into quitting by transferring them to another work, that's a breach of the labor law," Ohashi said.

The controversy started earlier this year when a city employee at a childcare facility was accused of intimidating a child by revealing his tattoo.

Tattoos still carry a strong cultural association with the Japanese underworld and the yakuza crime gangs.

Japan's aversion to tattoos can be found at swimming pools and public bath houses where there are often signs banning those with them.

Hashimoto insisted being a public employee meant making some sacrifices.

"Before I became governor, I had my hair dyed brown," he said. "I don't mean to be self-righteous … However, when you become governor or mayor you have to change it back to black. You're a public servant."

Thousands gather at a temple in Thailand to honor a tattoo master and have their body art recharged by monks. Msnbc.com's Dara Brown reports.

Asked by a reporter about Hollywood stars with tattoos, the mayor responded, "If Johnny Depp or Lady Gaga asked to become Osaka city employees, I would just say 'no'.”

At the moment the city is not considering firing workers with tattoos, but Hiroshi Kotawa, from the city's personnel section, said they would be asked to cover them. "And if they still refuse, then we will consider transferring them to other jobs which will not require interaction with the public."

A previous version of this article referred to Sayuri Ohashi, a female lawyer, as "he" due to an editing error.

Johnny Depp, are we over you?

    Warner Bros.

    Johnny Depp in "Dark Shadows"

    By Courtney Hazlett, TODAY

OPINION:If you're a big Johnny Depp fan, you sure didn't show the man much love last weekend. Depp's most recent film, horror-comedy "Dark Shadows," appears to be headed down the road to flop-ville. Is the poor box-office performance the mark of a bad movie, or are we just kind of done with Depp?

First, let's look at the argument for the former. The meager amount that the Tim Burton vampire spoof made -- just $29 million -- could have had a little to do with "The Avengers." The superhero flick made more than $100 million the same weekend "Dark Shadows" opened; that's some serious dominance. There's also a broader issue of timing that could be at play. It's entirely possible that we're vampire-d out at this point, and that no matter who starred in "Dark Shadows," it just wouldn't have blown the roof off theaters.

    Follow @ msnbc_ent

But come on, folks. This is JOHNNY DEPP we are talking about. Few actors have as loyal a fan base, yet he's not reliably opening movies any more. "The Rum Diary" made only $13 million , and let's not even go into the mess that was 2010's "The Tourist." And even though "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" raked in a total of $241 million, it was the lowest-performing film of the franchise when it was released in May 2011.

So, as a person with no dog in this race -- I am oddly ambivalent when it comes to the man -- I propose that maybe our great love affair with the two-time Sexiest Man Alive winner is over. If he was available, would some want to date him? Sure. But if you don't like him enough to go to his movies, it's not much of a relationship. Johnny, I think we've moved on.

Still love Johnny? Show him some love over on our Facebook page.

'Dark Shadows' offers fun makeover of a TV favorite

    Warner Bros.

Johnny Depp as Barnabas Collins in "Dark Shadows."

By Todd McCarthy, The Hollywood Reporter

REVIEW: The latest '60s/'70s TV show to get all dressed up as a fancy, big-budget feature film, "Dark Shadows" sinks its teeth half-way into its potentially meaty material but hesitates to go all the way. With an oddball premise that's right up his alley, director Tim Burton has stylish fun with a morally-and-time-warped family visited by an undead 18th century relative, as does Johnny Depp in the role of the antique British-accented vampire. But the humor slithers between the clever and the sophomoric and the film too often seems willing to settle for mild humor at the expense of hippie-era mores instead of pursuing the palpable temptation to become genuinely twisted. Still, with its central bloodsucker vs. witch rivalry and Depp in one of his patented bizarre roles, this has all the ear and tooth marks of an early summer winner for Warner Bros.

Johnny Depp jams with Alice Cooper, Steven Tyler, Joe Perry at 'Dark Shadows' premiere party (Video)

Reportedly, as a child Depp's obsession with the elegant, well-spoken, romantically haunted central character, Barnabas Collins, was deep to the point of being all-consuming. Unsurprisingly, the teenaged Burton was also a devotee of Dan Curtis's daily afternoon show, which ran on ABC from 1966-71 and amassed 1,225 individual episodes. This eighth collaboration between the actor and director affords Depp the opportunity to once again don unusual makeup and hair styles to become the white-faced, plaster-maned vampire who rejoins the living in 1972 after having been entombed for nearly 200 years.

PHOTOS: 'Dark Shadows' red carpet premiere

After a dockside Liverpool opening that makes it look like Burton is still making "Sweeney Todd," a five-minute prologue tells the tale of the Collins family's voyage to America, their establishment of a fishing empire in Maine and heir Barnabas' tragic love for the exquisite Josette (Bella Heathcote). The latter is made to fling herself off a cliff by the spurned witch Angelique (Eva Green), who then avenges herself against Barnabas by transforming him into a vampire and burying him six feet under.

'Dark Shadows' star Jonny Lee Miller reveals details about Neil Jordan vampire flick 'Byzantium' (Video)

The workmen who discover and dig up Barnabas' coffin in 1972 are thanked for the efforts by becoming his first victims -- he is, he readily admits, very thirsty—and he presently makes his way to his old home, the grand Collinwood Manor, now in a state of sorrowful disrepair, as are its occupants. Matriarch Elizabeth (Michelle Pfeiffer) presides over a depressive, eccentric household that includes her insolent naughty daughter Carolyn (Chloe Grace Moretz), no-good brother Roger (Jonny Lee Miller), the latter's mother-bereft 10-year-old son David (Gully McGrath), David's tippling shrink Dr. Julia Hoffman (Helena Bonham Carter), lowdown caretaker Willie (Jackie Earle Haley) and a newly arrived nanny, Victoria, who looks just like Josette of yore.

And, lo and behold, the big boss in town, whose own fishing operation has wiped the Collins' company out, is one Angie, none other than the remarkably preserved Angelique, just waiting for another chance to make old Barnabas her own.

Designer Colleen Atwood spills 'Dark Shadows' set secrets, 'Thin Man' fashion forecast

Given that the screenwriter here is Seth Grahame-Smith, the author of "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" and "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter," much is made of bizarre conjunctures and unexpected associations; Barnabas must get used to everything from motorized vehicles, hippies, Carolyn's rudeness and electricity to, horror of horrors, troll dolls and lava lamps. When he decides to throw a dress ball, despite protestations that no one does this anymore, he must also come to terms with an Alice who is not a woman but Alice Cooper, engaged to entertain the motley townsfolk.

'Dark Shadows' star Eva Green on her '300: Battle of Artemisia' character: 'She's like a man' (Video)

Depp drolly underplays the refined vampire's reactions to all this and more, although the soundtrack's frequent japes in this direction—playing "Superfly," the Carpenters' "Top of the World" and a Barry White special -- at pointedly ironic moments -- ultimately tip the balance toward easy points rather than genuine inventiveness.

Upon meeting the demure Victoria, Barnabas is convinced that he has been presented with a second opportunity for true love. In its pursuit, he embarks upon blood transfusions administered by Dr. Hoffman that he hopes will return him to human status. At the same time, however, he needs all his power to battle Angie, who will happily destroy half the town and put Barnabas back in his box again if he doesn't deign to join her in undying bliss.

Especially after her frighteningly ferocious turns as Bellatrix Lestrange in the "Harry Potter" series, it would have been easy to imagine Burton casting his wife as Angie. In the event, Bonham Carter proves a disarmingly droll choice as Dr. Hoffman, a thick-around-the-middle New York shrink who develops an unhealthy interest in the new visitor. Green's stunning Angie, her perfect teeth gleaming behind red scar lips, looks like she could eat Barnabas alive at any moment; she's so much the full-time sorceress, and he's so much the cultivated man of manners, that it barely seems like a fair fight. But, then, vampires have their ways, and the lethally attractive pair ultimately do get down to an especially athletic bout of extra-human sex before settling matters once and for all.

Given that Burton has traded in such off-kilter, oddly populated, humorously horrible material so many times before, there are few surprises in the way "Dark Shadows" has been handled tonally or visually. He could scarcely be more at home than at Collinwood Manor and some of the more ordinary characters, including Victoria, Roger and, unfortunately, the needy boy wonderfully played by McGrath, seem to bore him and get short shrift.

However, Depp is right on the money in a studiously controlled, steadfastly humorous performance that takes its rightful place in his personal portrait gallery of one-off misfits. Equipped with pointed fingers, the actor successfully channels the role's creator, Jonathan Frid, who died just last month at age 87, while adding distinctive riffs and vocal intonations of his own. He's a continual pleasure to watch.

Pfeiffer and Moretz have their moments, although a late plot twist concerning the latter's character doesn't sit well. Shot entirely in England despite the New England setting, the film is decked out with refined production values on a par with all of the director's work.

Did Depp and Portman sign the word 'tampon' by mistake in Paul McCartney music video?

Paul McCartney at the 2012 Grammys.

For his new music video “My Valentine,” Paul McCartney enlisted the aid of Natalie Portman and Johnny Depp to interpret the lyrics of his song through sign language. However, some in the sign-language community are now claiming the actors botched the effort.

The video, released on April 13, came in three editions: one with Portman, one with Depp, and one splicing the two together.  According to UK tabloid The Sun, both actors signed the word “tampon” instead of "appear," and Depp additionally signed "enemy" while attempting “valentine.”

A spokesperson for the British Deaf Association told the Sun, “The sign for tampon does seem to come up from both Johnny and Natalie, which causes some confusion, especially as American and British sign languages are different.”

But in an interview with TODAY.com, Jami Fisher, ASL Program Coordinator at the University of Pennsylvania, explained that while there may have been inconsistencies, the video is “not as scandalous” as reports are claiming.

“[The video] is not literally English to ASL, it’s conceptually interpreted, and appropriately so,”  Fisher says. “For me, the biggest error was when Johnny Depp signed ‘valentine’ at the end. His middle finger should have been reversed, so it looks like he’s giving the middle finger. It doesn’t mean ‘enemy’ though.”

As for the “tampon” blunder, Fisher believes that’s a difference of interpretation.

“'Tampon' doesn't have its own sign; in context, it uses a classifier predicate to mean 'an object of that shape is inserted,' she told TODAY.com. "The video uses a similar classifier predicate with the same handshapes to mean that (s)he 'appeared.'  They have similar conceptual representations … but actual meaning is made based on context.”

Fisher does agree with the Brits that using a proper interpreter instead of celebrities would have been nice, but both applaud McCartney’s effort to bring more attention to the language.

Adds Fisher, “The disconnect between British and American sign language is probably coming from the British audience, not the American. That’s my perspective. For a signer to watch this, they’d probably say, ‘Oh these people just learned sign language for the video.’”

And judging by other responses, she may be correct.

Christine, a nationally certified ASL interpreter, wrote on MTV News, “British sign language and American sign language are two completely different languages. They signed this in American Sign Language and while it wasn't perfect, they did not sign the gaffes mentioned in this article. I just think it's pretty cool that Paul McCartney thought this would be artistically and aesthetically pleasing to the eye.  Good on Natalie and Johnny for their work on this. It may get more people interested in learning ASL, since these are three very popular artists.”

Adds Victoria, “This just proves that most people would rather point out the flaws of others instead of actually enjoying the performance.”

New Paul McCartney video stars Natalie Portman, Johnny Depp

By Merle Ginsberg, The Hollywood Reporter

There aren't a lot of parties where you can see giants of the music, film, television and fashion worlds come together and act like old friends -- which some of them actually are. But at Stella McCartney's L.A. boutique on Friday night April 13, you could see Quincy Jones mingling with Gwyneth Paltrow; Gwen Stefani chatting casually with Woody Harrelson; and Dave Grohl and Chris Martin having a conversation together. There were more stars in the store and the outdoor tented garden -- with video screen -- than non-stars on hand.

But for the debut of Sir Paul McCartney's new self-directed video "My Valentine," the A-list turned up -- and more. How often does one receive an invitation from Paul and Stella McCartney? The father/daughter duo don't do a lot of press opps together, but this was a lot more than that. The black-and-white video, with cinematography from Wally Pfister ("The Dark Knight," "Inception"), was shown in three versions: one starring Johnny Depp, one with Natalie Portman (who appeared in McCartney's 2007 video for the song "Dance Tonight") and a version that cuts footage of the two actors together. (Speaking of which, why haven't these two starred in a movie together yet? They look amazing together.)

In the McCartney-directed Depp version, the actor plays guitar and does sign language to the song -- all in one long shot. Portman also performs sign language to the haunting love song, but also mimed the lyrics. The third version, with the two stars cut into one video, seemed to be a crowd favorite. The videos are all strikingly simple and strikingly intimate -- full eye contact with the actors, close-ups -- and heart-tugging emotion, "emo" being a Paul McCartney signature.

There was even a red carpet where actresses could show off their Stella McCartney looks: Paltrow sported Stella's sky high vegan booties with grey jeans and a black blazer, and didn't do the carpet with husband Martin, but greeted friends with him inside. Ginnifer Goodwin, stepping out with new boyfriend and co-star Josh Dallas, wore the evening's best look: a color block Stella dress that matched black and white print with peach and grey tones. Model Liberty Ross and Rumer Willis both donned versions of McCartney's hit spring dress, a red-and-white small print with an S-curve running through the body. Stella McCartney donned a simple black shirt and black well-cut trousers. She's notoriously simple in her dress. She also looked to have not a spot of makeup on her freshly scrubbed English rose skin.

Reese Witherspoon, pregnant and glowing, stepped out without husband Jim Toth, in a black dress with lace sleeves and a lace hem that was really flattering, Stefani, who spent most of the night with No Doubt's Tony Kanal, wore a jumpsuit in black that had sheer panels running all the way up the sides. "How can she wear underwear in that look?" asked one guest. A Hollywood stylist standing nearby quickly ended the mystery: "She isn't." The girl can work a look, that's for sure.

Paul McCartney welcomed guests with new wife Nancy Shevell at his side constantly -- their hands were  never far away from each other -- and it's clear who inspired "My Valentine." At the end of the night, the couple was deep in conversation with Paltrow and Martin.

Also on hand were Zooey Deschanel, in a strapless white lace dress and big black ribbon, Amy Smart, Jordana Brewster, Jane Fonda and boyfriend Richard Perry, stylists Tanya Gill and George Kotsiopolous, Jason Lewis and little Kristen Stewart, in a cobalt short skirt, black jacket and flat black pointed toe creeper shoes -- who spent most of the night hiding in a corner, looking like she felt very out of place.
