Drug charges against the daughter of rock star Jon Bon Jovi were dropped on Thursday, a day after she suffered a suspected heroin overdose, officials in New York said.

Oneida County District Attorney Scott D. McNamara said in a statement that Stephanie Bongiovi could not be charged because New York law prohibits the prosecution of people who had overdosed and were in possession of small amounts of drugs.

Bongiovi, 19, was found unresponsive in a dormitory room at Hamilton College in Clinton, New York, early on Wednesday and was later booked on misdemeanor charges of possession of a controlled substance (heroin), marijuana possession and criminal use of drug paraphernalia, which were found in the room.

A message left with the singer's representative was not immediately returned.

Heroin and marijuana charges against fellow student Ian S. Grant, 21, in connection with Bongiovi's case were also dropped as a witness or victim to a drug or alcohol overdose cannot be prosecuted in New York.

Bongiovi is the oldest of four children of Bon Jovi and wife Dorothea Hurley.

Rocker Jon Bon Jovi's daughter Stephanie Bongiovi, 19, was arrested after a suspected drug overdose early Wednesday morning in upstate New York and was charged with multiple drug-related violations, local police told NBC News.

According to a press release issued by the Town of Kirkland police department, police responded to a call at 1:51 a.m., reporting that a female at a Hamilton College dormitory had allegedly overdosed on heroin and was unresponsive.

That female, according to an investigator at the police department, was Bongiovi; she was transported to a local hospital.

Heroin was recovered at the scene, and one male, Ian S. Grant, 21, was arrested. Later, the Oneida County Drug Task Force searched the dorm and found heroin, marijuana and other drug paraphernalia.

Bongiovi was then arrested and charged with “criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh degree, criminal possession of marijuana in the fourth degree, criminally using drug paraphernalia -- all class A misdemeanors and unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation,” according to the press release. She was released on appearance tickets and will appear in town court in Kirkland at a later date.

Hamilton College issued the following statement: "On Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2012, members of the Kirkland Police Department arrested two Hamilton College students and charged them with possession of marijuana and possession of a controlled substance, both misdemeanors. In addition to violating state law, the actions alleged to have been committed by the students violate Hamilton College policy. The college is cooperating with the police investigation. Our first concern is always for the safety of our students. Out of respect for the privacy of our students and in accordance with federal regulations we do not discuss individual health or disciplinary matters."

A rep for Bon Jovi had no comment.

Bon Jovi and wife his Dorothea Hurley have four children; Stephanie is the oldest.

Jon Bon Jovi laments Sandy destruction of New Jersey shore: 'It's gone'

    By Randee Dawn, TODAY contributor

It didn't take long for New Jersey native Jon Bon Jovi to get on board with NBC's concert this evening to benefit victims of Sandy. He may have been in London when the call came, but the rocker -- who visited TODAY Friday to talk about his decision -- immediately got on a plane and flew home.

After checking out parts of New Jersey where he grew up, Bon Jovi said the changes rocked him. "It was hard to see your hometown devastated like this ... my grammar school turned into a shelter, people's homes gone and them saying to me, 'We are homeless, we never intended to be homeless.' These are hard-working, blue-collar people."

But he has high hopes that rebuilding will happen thanks to "the collective 'we.'" "As Americans, we all come together in these times of need and all feel we're all New Yorkers in these times of need.... People come together in this time."

Bon Jovi has shot videos and part of his album artwork in areas that are now devastated, and remains stunned. "It's gone. The entire Jersey shore that I knew is gone."

Be sure to check out Bon Jovi, who will appear tonight alongside other performers including Bruce Springsteen and Billy Joel on the "Hurricane Sandy Coming Together Benefit." The special will air Friday at 8 p.m. ET on NBC, USA Network, SyFy, MSNBC, CNBC, Bravo, E!, Style Network, G4 and more. It will also be live streamed on NBC.com, and money collected will go to American Red Cross relief efforts.

    By Associated Press

A New Jersey man will face five years in prison after pleading guilty to a string of burglaries at the Jersey shore, including the home of rocker Jon Bon Jovi.

Nicholas Tracy of Beachwood pleaded guilty Tuesday to three counts of theft and burglary from a spree that netted him more than $300,000 worth of jewelry and personal items from the homes.

The thefts took place in March and April 2011 along the Middletown Township road where Bon Jovi lives.

Police say at least some of the stolen property has been recovered.

He will be sentenced to five years in prison next month under the terms of a plea deal.

Happy 50th birthday, Jon Bon Jovi!

He's done a lot for just five decades.

Numerous enormous hit songs, movies, political activism, and he created JBJ Soul Kitchen, a New Jersey restaurant where customers pay what they can, in money or volunteer work.

He's won a Golden Globe and an American Music Award and was nominated for an Oscar, Grammys, and MTV Video Music Awards.

He's been a heartthrob for decades now, traveling through the big feathered hair days to a more modern, sleeker look.
