Justin Bieber booed by London fans angry over late concert start

Justin Bieber left British fans and their parents unhappy here after starting a Monday concert nearly two hours later than advertised.

While the 19-year-old singer's young fans were kept waiting inside the O2 Arena in the British capital, frantic parents started converging on the venue expecting to pick up their children, according to the BBC.

STORY: Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney cut off on London stage after exceeding noise curfew

Fans tweeting from inside the London venue said there were boos from the crowd almost an hour before the star emerged, according to the report. Speaking after the show, one fan told the BBC: "They were playing Michael Jackson song, after song, after song --  it was so annoying."

Added the fan: "Everyone was on edge and as more time passed, everyone was getting more worried and booing."

STORY: Bruce Springsteen's guitarist slams London concert curfew

Bieber had been due to start at 8:30pm London time. The opening acts performed until 8:50pm, and it wasn’t until 10:20pm that Bieber appeared on stage, the BBC reported. It didn't mention the opening acts, but the arena's web site lists "Call Me Maybe" star Carly Rae Jepsen and Australian singer Cody Simpson as Bieber's support talent during his London visit.

One unhappy parent said he paid $605 (£400) for three tickets and tweeted that he ended up missing the performance so he could make the last train home. He added: "Disgusting!! Waste of my time and money... never again."

Bieber's previous U.K. gig, in Nottingham on Saturday, also began late. The O2 Area, one of London's most popular music venues for big stars, apologized for the late start via its Twitter feed. "Justin Bieber is now on stage and apologizes for the lateness of his show," it said. Tuesday morning, it followed up, saying the venue would  be "exploring all available options to ensure this doesn't happen again."

Bieber is set to play three more gigs at the London arena this week, with shows set for Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

Justin Bieber Instagrams over 'worst birthday' in London

    By Brandi Fowler, E! Online

Justin Bieber had a bit more to say about his " worst birthday " ever. After the "Girlfriend" crooner's circus-themed 19th birthday celebration went awry Friday night in London, the Biebs took to Instagram on Sunday, bashing Cirque du Soir night club for shutting down his celebration early.

More details from Justin Bieber's "worst birthday"

"The funny moment when people believe I brought underage people to a club.. U think Will is letting his 14 year old in a club, I don't think so.. 2nd I love how the club wanted to give the press another reason to why we didn't stay at their weak a-- club so they wouldn't look bad for me walking in and right back out," Bieber wrote in a caption next to a black box. "i said m 'worst bday' but that was due to dummies pushing over my fans and being overly aggressive. Btw it wasn't the worst bday cuz all my friends from back home flew in I was just mad in the moment."

Bieber's birthday bash went sour after members of his entourage got into an apparent confrontation with the club's security, prompting his entire party to leave, a source told E! News.

Security thought some members of the superstar singer's crew looked rather young when they arrived to the club, and were refused entrance because of their age after they were asked to show their IDs.

The Biebs tweets "worst birthday" after confrontation with club security

"We, like all clubs in London, operate a strict age policy," a club spokesperson told E! News. "As a few of the members of the party were under the suitable age of 18, the security team at Cirque Du Soir, London, clearly explained this rule and refused entry to the club for anyone who could not provide us with adequate proof of age."

Prior to Bieber's Instagram posting, he returned to the restaurant where he grabbed dinner on his birthday, Indian restaurant Mint Leaf, sporting dark shades, a black hoodie, black leather pants, and bright red sneakers.

At least there's been one highlight during his trip to London.

Justin Bieber screws up black history on 'Saturday Night Live'

By Aaron Couch, The Hollywood Reporter

    Dana Edelson / NBC

Justin Bieber hosted "Saturday Night Live" on Feb. 9.

Justin Bieber seduced the audience and joked about smoking pot during this week’s "Saturday Night Live."

During his opening monologue, the host and musical guest noted that February is home to both Valentine’s Day and Black History Month, so he would celebrate both. With help from Kenan Thompson, the singer approached young women in the audience, presented them with a rose, and smooth talked them with some black history facts. He started off well — but soon got his history mixed up.

Photos from THR: 12 'SNL' sketches made into movies

“Girl you’re driving me crazy, but did you also know Denzel Washington invented peanut butter?” he asked one young woman. Finally, surprise guest Whoopi Goldberg appeared and Bieber serenaded her with “One Less Lonely Girl.”

Later, Bieber plays the ultimate Miley Cyrus (Vanessa Bayer) fan, appearing on her talk show and proclaiming his disdain for Justin Bieber. Bieber's character obliquely addresses photos that emerged in January of the singer smoking marijuana: “I also heard he got busted smoking weed, and people make mistakes and he’s really sorry about it and he’s never going to do it again.”

"SNL" kicked off the episode by revisiting Sunday’s Super Bowl blackout, which left the CBS Sports team with little to do but rehash old facts for thirty minutes. A more detailed description of what went down can be read here, but sufficed to say, there’s awkward talk of Dan Marino’s (Jason Sudeikis) recently revealed extramarital affair and Shannon Sharpe’s (Jay Pharoah) desire to eat a punter.

Speaking of the Super Bowl, Thompson appeared on "Weekend Update" as “the one black guy in every commercial.” You know him — the “cool but non threatening” guy who is forever banging out a rhythm Pringles cans, DJing parties and high-fiving people — all in the name of adding diversity to an ad campaign. Thompson’s character tells Seth Meyers his life is awesome, because he is constantly hanging out with “Hispanic girls with bangs” and white guys who wear fedoras when they dance.

Bieber affected a greaser accent for a sketch derived from "Grease’s" “Tell Me More” (renamed “Say More Stuff” in "SNL" parlance). Bieber’s character isn’t too smart, as it’s revealed he was disappointed on his date when he discovered “sweater puppies” weren’t literally puppies hidden in a woman’s sweater.

The pop star nearly cracked up ala vintage Jimmy Fallon while playing a respectable pre-medical student who goes home to meet his girlfriend’s (Nasim Pedrad) family. Her oafish older brother (Taran Killam) screams in his face, just about causing Bieber to break.

Later, Bieber got to play a nerd who, along with his girlfriend (Pedrad), plan an abstinence-themed school dance.

"SNL" is new next week with host Christoph Waltz and musical guest Alabama Shakes.

SNL to hand out tickets early to Beliebers weathering the storm

    Brandon Goodwin/TODAY.com

Justin Bieber fans Kayla DeStephen and Arianna Mena hide under tents, tarps and blankets to shield themselves from snow.

    By Matt Murray, TODAY

Updated at 7:12 p.m. ET: Justin Bieber fans everywhere rejoiced when it was announced that the pop star would be hosting "Saturday Night Live" on Feb. 9, but earlier this week, news of a serious snow storm approaching the Northeast seemed it would keep the Bieber faithful from camping out.

But even a blizzard can't stop Bieber Fever.

On Friday morning, nearly 20 Bieber fans were already in line outside 30 Rock, waiting for their chance to get stand-by tickets for "SNL." Stand-by tickets are handed out the Saturday morning before each show, and don't guarantee admission. Instead, the tickets offer an opportunity for fans to fill seats of those that are unable to attend that evening's show.

However, the wait for the Beliebers may not be as long as they first throught. A rep from Saturday Night Live said that, due to the storm, stand-by tickets would be distributed intermittently beginning at 6 p.m. Friday evening, ending at 11 p.m.

That's good news for these fans, since the forecast in New York City for Friday into Saturday calls for blizzard conditions, with potential wind gusts as high as 60 mph and snow accumulation of 10 to 15 inches.

But that wasn't the only support Saturday Night Live showed for its fans. In addition to handing out warm soup, which the show does for its stand-by line whenever it's cold, Friday afternoon, SNL posted picture of t-shirts to its Instagram account, accompanied by the message "Gathering up some #SNL swag for the standby line to help keep them warm. Don't want anyone to catch an actual Bieber Fever..."

The pop star himself made sure his fans were fed by having pizzas delivered to those waiting in line.

everyone outside be safe. enjoy the pizza ;) #BIEBERonSNL

Bieber fans Olivia Bee and Allyssa Yohanna joined the line Thursday afternoon, and said they didn't get the emergency alert until they'd already set up camp.

    Brandon Goodwin/TODAY.com

Justin Bieber fans Olivia Bee and Allyssa Yohana take shelter in their tent while waiting for "Saturday Night Live" stand-by tickets.

"Originally we planned on, I was going to knit, (Olivia) was going to embroider and get homework done," Yohanna told TODAY.com. "But it's too cold and too wet."

"Now it's just like a really weird slumber party, outside in a blizzard," Bee said.

The girls did say that they set some ground rules once they heard the weather had potential to turn severe.

"We said our rule was that if we ever started to feel way too cold, we would not risk our lives for Bieber," Yohanna said.

"Yeah, we weren't going to die for Bieber," Bee added. "We're not die-hard fans, literally."

Justin Bieber becomes youngest artist with five No. 1 albums

    By Piya Sinha-Roy, Reuters

Published at 1:55 p.m. ET: LOS ANGELES -- Canadian pop star Justin Bieber became the youngest artist to land five chart-topping albums in the United States on Wednesday when his latest record, "Believe Acoustic," debuted atop the Billboard 200 album chart.

"Believe Acoustic," which features stripped down versions of Bieber's songs from his fourth No. 1 album, "Believe," released last June, as well as three new songs, sold 211,000 copies in its first week according to figures from Nielsen SoundScan.

The album also topped iTunes downloads charts in 63 countries, and became a hot topic on social media platforms as the singer's 34 million-strong followers on Twitter raced to purchase the record as soon as it was released.

Bieber was previously tied with former Disney star Miley Cyrus with four chart-topping albums before turning 19, and he is only one of nine artists in Billboard history to have a No. 1 album for four consecutive years.

    Bieber's 19th birthday is March 1.

The singer, who failed to pick up a Grammy nomination this year despite having a top-selling album and sold-out world tour in 2012, will be hosting and performing on NBC's "Saturday Night Live" this week, the night before the Grammy awards.

Four new albums debuted in the top five of the Billboard 200 chart this week, led by "Believe Acoustic."

Bieber informs Fallon: 'Chuck Norris is my father'

Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli's 14th studio album, "Passione," landed at No. 2 with sales of 93,000, while Canadian sister duo Tegan & Sara notched No. 3 with their seventh studio album, "Heartthrob," selling 49,000 copies.

R&B singer Charlie Wilson came in at No. 4 with his latest record, "Love, Charlie," selling 44,000 copies in its first week.

Singer Beyonce saw a boost in sales following her widely praised performance at the Super Bowl in New Orleans on Sunday, which was watched by more than 108 million people.

For the week ending Sunday, Feb. 2, digital sales of Beyonce's songs "Halo," "Crazy In Love" and "Single Ladies" saw the biggest bumps. There were 19,000 digital copies of "Halo" sold, a 338 percent increase from the previous week.

The new Destiny's Child compilation album, "Love Songs," didn't see as big a bump, selling under 6,000 copies last week.

Beyonce is hardly the first lip-syncher caught in the act

    By Courtney Hazlett, TODAY

Beyonce might be the person who's taking the most heat for lip-synching at this precise moment in time, but she's far from the first performer who has relied on a backing track of some sort. While she stands a good chance at recovering from her national anthem trickery, some earlier musical offenders weren't so lucky.

Milli Vanilli was famously stripped of the best new artist Grammy in 1990 after it was discovered that they -- Robert Pilatus and Fabrice Morvan -- didn't actually provide the vocals used on their "Girl You Know It's True" album. Below is one of their hit songs from the album, "Girl I'm Gonna Miss You," which hit the top of the charts when it was released in 1989.

    Watch on YouTube

There's the behind-the-scenes lip-synch, and then there's the live, right-before-your eyes reveal. Despite the fact that the original clip has pretty much been scrubbed from the Internet, Ashlee Simpson will long be remembered for her "Pieces of Me" fail on "Saturday Night Live" in 2004. The music started, but her mouth didn't really move, and Simpson did a little jig to deflect the awfulness of the situation. (Catch some of it around the 3:50 mark of this video.)

In October 2012, Justin Bieber made headlines for throwing up on stage -- hey, stars get the flu, too! -- but the other takeaway was that while the singer was losing his lunch, he managed to keep on "singing."

    Watch on YouTube

Pop stars aren't the only ones guilty of relying on pre-recorded vocals. Is rapper Eminem's mouth keeping up with the vocal track here?

    Watch on YouTube

At the 2007 BET awards, 50 Cent skipped the entire first verse for "Amusement Park" and wandered the audience until catching up with the song. Did he forget the words? Later he said, "I just wasn't concentrating."

These examples just scratch the surface; where proof exists of one artist lip-synching, there are scores of allegations that others are doing it, too. Mariah Carey, Britney Spears, Madonna, the list goes on.

Are you bothered by lip-synching or is it enough to see a performer live on stage, whether he or she is actually singing or not? Weigh in on Facebook.

It was Justin Bieber's world and this guy just guarded it. But no more. A former personal bodyguard for the "Boyfriend" singer is suing him for assault and battery and wages after a backstage incident where Bieber allegedly lost his temper and punched him repeatedly in the chest and then fired him.

According to the complaint, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court and a copy of which was obtained by E! News, Moshe Benabou claims he's owed $421,261 in unpaid wages, unspecified damages and court costs after working overtime to protect the pop star.

    View the court documents

Benabou alleges in the documents that the dispute between himself and Bieber that led to the purported altercation took place on Oct. 10, 2012 while the two were backstage prior to a concert.

Check out the Biebs' boxing-themed photoshoot

"Justin Bieber, egged on by a small group of his 'companions,' launched an abusive tirade against Moshe Benabou," reads the suit. "The tirade was apparently triggered by what Justin Bieber perceived as an attempt by Moshe Benabou to keep one member of Mr. Bieber's entourage physically away from Justin Bieber. As part of his tirade, Justin Bieber repeatedly punched (the plaintiff) in the chest and upper body area."

Benabou, who says he did not retaliate or attempt to protect himself, then alleged that the popster turned around and exclaimed, "You are fired!"

So far, no response from Bieber's camp.

Charlie Sheen gives $12,000 to help cover funeral for Bieber photographer

    By Josh Grossberg, E! Online

Charlie Sheen just upped his good-guy credentials. The "Anger Management" star, no stranger to being hounded by the paparazzi, generously sent a $12,000 check to help cover funeral costs to the family of the photographer who was killed last week while trying to snap a picture of Justin Bieber's car.

"A tragic incident like this erases the line between the photographer and the subject. It's an unforgiving moment that begs us all to be human and work as one to prevent this in the future," Sheen told E! News through his rep. "As parents, we are all not supposed to bury our children. Justin Bieber paparazzo death: Chris Guerra remembered as a "sweet" guy

Chris Guerra, a 29-year-old paparazzo who was described as a "sweet" guy by his peers, crossed Sepulveda Boulevard by Los Angeles' Getty Center and the 405 Freeway to try and get a shot of the teen idol's white Ferrari, which had been pulled over by police, when he was tragically struck by a car driven by a 69-year-old woman and subsequently died. (It turned out that the driver of Bieber's vehicle was actually the singer's rap buddy Lil Twist.)

Sheen decided to pitch in after a plea from a photog pal who was friends with Guerra and was trying to raise money to help the latter's family with the funeral expenses. The wake was being held Thursday.

Coroner identifies paparazzo killed trying to get Justin Bieber photo

    By Courtney Hazlett, NBC News

Two days after a paparazzo died trying to get a photo of pop star Justin Bieber, the L.A. County coroner's office has identifed the photographer as 29-year-old Christopher James Guerra.

On New Year's Day, Guerra had pulled over on L.A.'s busy Sepulveda Boulevard near the Getty Center Drive exit of the 405 Freeway to photograph a traffic stop involving a Ferrari registered to Bieber, according to the LAPD. He was crossing Sepulveda heading east, away from the traffic stop, when he was hit by a 2007 Toyota Highlander that was traveling south at about 5:50 p.m.

"It could happen to any one of us," veteran paparazzo Rick Mendoza told TODAY. "We’re dealing with a billion-dollar industry called Hollywood, and this ain’t no joke. And it is money that drives you."

NBC Latino: Photographers discuss risks, rights for celeb chasers

And that money that might not have amounted to much. Longtime celebrity photographer Dave Allocca and multiple industry sources told NBC News that a plain shot of Bieber in his Ferarri likely would have fetched no more than $100. As it turns out, Bieber wasn't even in the car at the time of the accident.

Bieber issued a statement Wednesday saying that "hopefully this tragedy will finally inspire meaningful legislation." Miley Cyrus tweeted similarly, "Hope this paparazzi/JB accident brings on some changes in ’13 Paparazzi are dangerous! Wasn’t Princess DI enough of a wake up call?!"

    Gene Blevins / Reuters

Los Angeles police look over the car that struck and killed a celebrity photographer who was trying to take photographs of a Ferrari registered to pop star Justin Bieber.

Police described the accident involving Guerra at the scene on Tuesday night. "While the highway patrolman was conducting his investigation of the speeding violation of the Ferrari (that Guerra was photographing), he noticed a (white male) cross four lanes of traffic and was taking pictures of the traffic stop," LAPD Sgt. Rudy Lopez said.

"He told him to get back to his vehicle, the individual refused to, he had to order him twice," the officer continued. "Eventually the individual with the camera did turn around, walked back in the direction of the vehicle, [and] in the roadway he was struck by an uninvolved vehicle."

Guerra was taken by ambulance to nearby Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 6:20 p.m.

The 69-year-old woman behind the wheel of the car that hit Guerra has been cooperating with authorities, police told the Los Angeles Times. It's unlikely that she'll face charges in connection with the accident.

Justin Bieber calls for paparazzi laws after photographer dies trying to get a $100 shot

By M. Alex Johnson and Courtney Hazlett, NBC News

Pop superstar Justin Bieber called for a crackdown on paparazzi Wednesday after a photographer was killed as he tried to shoot pictures of Bieber's white Ferrari in Los Angeles — pictures that a veteran photographer said probably would have been worth no more than $100.

    Gene Blevins / Reuters

Los Angeles police look over the car that struck and killed a celebrity photographer who was trying to take photographs of a Ferrari registered to pop star Justin Bieber on Jan. 1.

The photographer, a man in his late 20s whom police wouldn't identify until they can notify his next of kin, was pronounced dead at UCLA Medical Center shortly after he was run over by a passing motorist about 5:30 p.m. local time Tuesday, police said.

Authorities confirmed that Bieber, 18, wasn't in the Ferrari. It was being driven by a friend, whom they wouldn't identify, and it wasn't involved in the accident, police said.

David Allocca, who's photographed celebrities for many years, told NBC News that even if Bieber had been in the car, any shot the man took would likely have been worth little.

    Follow @TODAY_ent

"A plain photo of Bieber in his car? Probably around $100, not more than $500," said Allocca, who's photographed Marlon Brando, Frank Sinatra, Nicole Kidman and both Presidents Bush in a 30-year career. "I can guarantee that."

The incident took place after a California Highway Patrol officer flagged the Ferrari for speeding on the northbound lanes of Interstate 405, said Madeline Nightingale, watch commander of the Los Angeles Police Department's West Traffic Bureau. The car then exited at Sepulveda Boulevard and Getty Center Drive, she told NBC News.

During the traffic stop, the photographer crossed the busy Sepulveda thoroughfare, which runs parallel to the 405, and tried to shoot photos of the vehicle's occupants from a perch on the narrow divider, she said.

The Highway Patrol officer on the scene repeatedly warned the man that his position was dangerous, she said. The man was then struck by a car traveling southbound on Sepulveda, Nightingale said.

No charges were expected to be filed against the motorist, who stopped and tried to administer assistance, Nightingale told NBC News. The driver was a woman with two young children in the vehicle, Nightingale said.

Police in Los Angeles are investigating the death of a photographer who was hit by a car while trying to take pictures of a white Ferrari owned by pop star Justin Bieber. TODAY's Willie Geist reports.

Thibault Mauvilain, a celebrity photographer who went to the scene of Tuesday's accident, told reporters that he knew the photographer who was killed.

"He always played by the rules. I'm not aware of him doing anything illegal," Mauvilain said, according to NBC 4 of Los Angeles.

NBC Los Angeles: Man killed attempting to photograph Justin Bieber's Ferrari

"Some people will say he's just another crazy paparazzo trying to make the money. Actually, he was not a paparazzo. He was just another kid from New Mexico."

'Hopefully this tragedy will finally inspire meaningful legislation'
In a statement Wednesday, Bieber said: "While I was not present nor directly involved with this tragic accident, my thoughts and prayers are with the family of the victim."

Justin Bieber wasn't in the car at the time of Tuesday's incident, police said.

He added: "Hopefully this tragedy will finally inspire meaningful legislation and whatever other necessary steps to protect the lives and safety of celebrities, police officers, innocent public bystanders and the photographers themselves."

In fact, California has such a law. In 2010, the state cracked down on paparazzi, adding extra penalties for photographers who drive dangerously in pursuit of pictures they intend to sell.

But in November — in a case also involving a photographer who was hoping to get pictures of Bieber at a traffic stop — a Superior Court judge refused to apply it, saying it was unconstitutional.

Los Angeles City Council member Dennis Zine — who witnessed a previous paparazzi pursuit of Bieber in July, which ended with a photographer's being struck by a motorist — called on lawmakers Wednesday to give the law even more teeth.

"Unfortunately, the State law that passed in 2010 was not successful in a recent court case, so I would urge our State legislators to revisit the statute and make amendments in order to strengthen it and make it more effective," Zine, a Los Angeles reserve police officer, said in a statement.

The behavior of celebrity photographers has been widely denounced ever since 1997, when Princess Diana died in a French auto accident that was initially blamed on pursuing photographers. The wreck was subsequently blamed on Diana's driver.

The market value for many celebrity shots has fallen in recent years, Allocca said, and now it takes a "great photo" to earn big money.

Justin Bieber is the most Googled person on Earth. The pop star started as a viral sensation. He and his manager, Scooter Braun, discussed Bieber's journey and his future with Ryan Seacrest.

"With Instagram, with Twitter, with cellphones — everyone's got a point-and-shoot, everyone's got a camera wherever you go," he said.

"If he had a joint in his mouth, maybe a million bucks, to somebody," Allocca said. "But no one outlet is paying that money. Magazines aren't the first to get it anymore. The Internet gets it."

But celebrities continue to get caught up in dangerous incidents involving paparazzi:

    • In June 2011, Tori Spelling backed her car into the wall of her children's school in Tarzana, Calif., as she was being pursued by a photographer.

"Wht will it take?" Spelling tweeted at the time. "Someone dying for paparazzi to stop?"

    • In October 2009, a car driven by Nicole Richie was rear-ended by a car carrying two photographers in Beverly Hills, Calif. The driver was arrested and found to have no driver's license.
    • The same month, Brad Pitt was riding a motorcycle in Los Angeles when a photographer trying to get a picture rear-ended the actor with his car. Pitt and the motorcycle fell over, but he was uninjured.
    • In 2010, a photographer claimed that he was badly injured when a car in which Lindsay Lohan was riding ran him over outside a Hollywood nightclub. The photographer sued Lohan in January 2011; Lohan asked a court to dismiss the suit last summer.
    • In June, Lohan was involved in another crash when her rented Porsche ran into a truck in Santa Monica, Calif., while allegedly fleeing a pack of chasing paparazzi.

Allocca said it was "stupid" that the photographer who was killed Tuesday died over a picture that eventually would have little value.

"All I can say is remember the New Kids on the Block. Remember Hanson," he said.

"Bieber will be there shortly as well."

Justin Bieber murder plot by New Mexico inmate uncovered, foiled

    By Randee Dawn, TODAY contributor

A murder plot aimed at Justin Bieber has been uncovered in New Mexico, according to authorities. An inmate incarcerated there reportedly set his sights on the Canadian pop star from behind bars.

A police affidavit indicated that inmate Dana Martin "had become infatuated" with Bieber, and wore a tattoo of the young man on his leg. Martin had been convicted of the 2000 murder of 15-year-old Deandra Fluorucci, but sent two individuals, Mark Staake and his nephew Tanner Ruane, to Vermont in the hopes of killing off witnesses to that murder.

Additionally, the affidavit pointed out, Martin's "ultimate target was J.B." or, Justin Bieber.

The alleged plot would have involved Staake and Ruane reaching Bieber while he was recently in New York City for his Madison Square Garden shows, then killing and castrating Bieber and his bodyguard. The plot came undone when Martin confessed to police about his plans.

The suspects now face two counts of conspiracy to commit murder, and two counts of conspiracy to commit aggravated battery.

On TODAY Thursday, NBC News's Andrea Canning reported that while they were unable to reach Bieber's representatives, his camp has been quoted in the press saying that they take every precaution to protect Justin's safety and the safety of his fans.
