Will Kate Winslet change her name to Kate Rocknroll?

    Kate Winslet and Ned Rocknroll

    By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, TODAY

So everyone knows a woman doesn't have to change her name when she gets married, but come on, Kate Winslet, don't you want to be "Kate Rocknroll"?

Winslet's wedding earlier this month was a surprise, but more surprising to many was the name of her groom: Ned Rocknroll.

The wedding was a hush-hush ceremony, so it's not clear if his musical last name was engraved in careful calligraphy on Crane invitations. And Winslet will likely continue to act under her current name, since she didn't change it when she wed Jim Threapleton or Sam Mendes.

    Follow @ TODAY_ent

As you might guess, "Rocknroll" isn't her new husband's real name. He was born Ned Abel Smith, but don't mind that fairly generic last name. There's a more famous name in his family tree -- he's the nephew of Sir Richard Branson, founder of Virgin Group, and works for Virgin Galactic, which hopes to sell flights into space in the near future. (His title is reportedly "head of astronaut relations and marketing," which is almost as good as "Rocknroll.")

The name change came about in 2008. "The whole thing was about having fun with your name," his then-wife, Eliza Pearson, told the British newspaper The Daily Mail. "He thought we all took ourselves too seriously so it was about reacting against it. He looked into just being ‘Ned’, with no surname at all but, apparently, that’s illegal so we couldn’t do it."

Pearson (no word on whether she was ever known as "Eliza Rocknroll") told the paper she learned about the legal name change one day when her then-fiance emailed her a photo of his new passport.

"It was hysterical. We had discussed him doing this many times before, but I wasn’t sure whether he’d do it," she said.

A photo of their 2009 wedding shows the bride and groom posed between four friends who are bending over, rear ends to the camera, and who have the letters ROCKNROLL written on their white pants.

He's not the only celebrity to change his last name to something unusual. Football player Chad Johnson changed his last name to "Ochocinco" in 2008. "Ocho cinco" translates as "eight five," and 85 ("ochenta y cinco") is Johnson's Cincinnati Bengals' uniform number. He changed it back in 2012.

Kate Winslet marries Ned Rocknroll in secret New York ceremony

    Tyrone Siu / REUTERS

Kate Winslet and Ned Rocknroll in Hong Kong earlier in December.

    By Natalie Finn, E! Online

Kate Winslet's heart did go on. The 37-year-old Oscar winner tied the knot with boyfriend Ned Rocknroll, 34, earlier this month in what apparently was a very hush-hush ceremony in New York, her rep confirmed Wednesday to E! News.

The private nuptials were "attended by her two children and a very few friends and family," the rep said, adding that the couple got engaged over the summer.

More fun facts about Ned Rocknroll

According to Britain's Sun, Leonardo DiCaprio gave the bride away in lieu of her father, the wedding being that much of a secret.

Rocknroll, a nephew of billionaire Richard Branson, and Winslet dated for about a year and a half before taking the plunge. The relationship with her fellow Brit developed after both were houseguests of Branson's on exclusive Necker Island in the Caribbean in August 2011 when a fire broke out, forcing the villa's occupants to evacuate. Rocknroll was the one who accompanied her and her kids back home, though she had been vacationing with model Louis Dowler.

This is Winslet's third trip down the aisle, though it's the first time we really would advise her to not take her husband's name. (Or, then again...)

Before she got her MRS, Winslet got a CBE from the Queen!

She has a 12-year-old daughter, Mia, with first husband Jim Threapleton, and a 9-year-old son, Joe, with director Sam Mendes.

She and Mendes announced they were divorcing in 2010, a year after she won a Best Actress Oscar for "The Reader" and a Golden Globe for the Mendes-directed "Revolutionary Road."

Kate Winslet's 'Titanic' screen test reveals film's dubious beginnings

    By Courtney Hazlett, NBC News

It's hard to imagine that "Titanic" had the potential to be a flop. But take a look at this footage from star Kate Winslet's screen test for the movie, and you'll likely agree the earliest iterations of the film were not pretty.

For starters, Jeremy Sisto (who now appears on ABC's "Suburgatory") -- and not Leonardo DiCaprio -- plays Jack. Whatever the opposite of "having chemistry" is, that's what Sisto and Winslet have in this footage.

And the dialogue ... oh my. To say that director James Cameron did some tweaking would be an understatement.

    Watch on YouTube

To be fair, does anyone really want their first drafts out there for all the public to see? But kudos to Winslet: She was only 19 years old when she shot "Titanic," and even in an otherwise awful screen test and without the chemistry of DiCaprio to play off of, Winslet really shines.

Celine Dion admits 'Titanic' song could make her sick, too

    By Randee Dawn, TODAY contributor

Visitors to Las Vegas may have been wondering what could have happened to Celine Dion that would require her to cancel five weeks of shows. Here's the answer, as the Grammy-winning songstress told TODAY's Savannah Guthrie on Monday: She had a virus that affected her vocal cords.

"It was just choppy a little bit," said Dion. And while her heart may go on, her voice wouldn't let her go on -- so she had to make that difficult decision to stay off stage for a bit. "It's hard to do a show, but it's much harder to cancel the show. We disappointed a lot of people. It was hard."

There's one person out there, however, who was probably happy with a little less of Dion's "My Heart Will Go On," a song that won an Oscar after being featured in "Titanic" -- Kate Winslet. In March, the actress said the tune made her feel like "throwing up." But Dion took the criticism in stride -- and even admitted to some empathy with Winslet's statement.

"'My Heart Will Go On' gave me the opportunity to be associated with a classic that will live forever," she said. "If I just count how many times I've sung it, maybe it'll get me sick. If she feels tired just hearing it, and, like, throwing up, I'm glad she was not the one singing it."

    Follow @ TODAY_ent

For now, Dion is back from her break, and even has a new song, "Didn't Know Love." She said that no matter what happens to her voice, though, that is not what defines her. "I don't depend on my vocal cords," she said. "I don't depend on my success and my singing. Don't get me wrong. I love what I do. But I don't hold on to that. When you have children (Dion has three with husband Rene Angelil -- and notes that her 11-year-old son is more of a fan of Eminem than his mother's music), you have accomplished a lot."

Did Rose kill Jack by not sharing raft in 'Titanic'?

    Follow @ msnbc_ent

    20th Century Fox

Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet in "Titanic"

    By Randee Dawn, TODAY contributor

Their hearts went on. But would life have been different if Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio) had just gotten on the raft with Rose DeWitt (Kate Winslet) at the end of 1997's "Titanic"?

Some folks with extra time on their handsInternet scholars over at Reddit have been doing the calculations, and while photographic experimental evidence appears to say yes, physics calculations say no way.

For those with fuzzy memories: At the end of "Titanic," the ship goes down (spoiler!), Rose and Jack end up in the water, and she takes refuge on a pine plank from the ship's Grand Staircase. Jack dangles from the side and they both pass out. When Rose wakes, Jack has frozen to death, half-in and half-out of the water. She is rescued and goes on to live a long, long time.

But couldn't they both have fit on that big plank?

Fans say yes, and offer up photos of a taped-off section of floor representing the raft, which makes it clear that two grown adults could have fit in the physical space of the plank.

    Follow @ msnbc_ent

But as Reddit poster Khromatic noted (along with mathematical/physics calculations), they'd both have sunk. He/she wrote: "As force of gravity is larger than that of buoyancy, Leo and Kate will be swimming with the fishes."

The fate of Rose and Jack has has been well-discussed on the web. Even if there wasn't room on the plank, did an earlier decision by Rose doom Jack?

Askville over on Amazon.com dealt with this one a few years ago, when submitter Layyla said her son had a theory about the film: "If Rose had stayed on the lifeboat she would have been safe and Jack would then have been able to worry only about himself. Jack is a survivor and he would have made it."

Would he? Nobody knows, but those who read the post decided this explanation from 67alecto was best: "I still see him going down with the ship as opposed to getting on a lifeboat -- he still would have let (women) and children go first. But, having gone down and not needing to worry about Rose, I think he’d have had a greater chance of surviving. He (put) her above himself, both literally and figuratively, as she floated out of the freezing water.... I’d give him 75% odds of surviving had he been just looking out for himself."

But it would have made for a very different movie.

Kate Winslet's 'Titanic 3D' breasts censored in China

    Paramount Pictures

    By Peter Gicas, E! Online

We've all heard the complaints and concerns about 3-D. The annoying glasses, the headaches. But this one takes the cake.

As they flock to see "Titanic 3D," moviegoers in China are quickly realizing that they're not exactly getting the whole picture. It seems film censors in the country determined that the scene in which Kate Winslet's breasts are exposed while she poses for Leonardo DiCaprio as he sketches her has been edited so that Winslet is only shown from the neck up.

And, no, it's not what you think.

It turns out Winslet's bare chest itself isn't so much the problem, but rather, the fact that it is being presented in 3-D.

"Considering the vivid 3D effects, we fear that viewers may reach out their hands for a touch and thus interrupt other people's viewing," read a statement from China's State Administration of Radio, Film and Television. "We've decided to cut off the nudity scenes."

Not surprisingly, such a ruling isn't going over very well.

"I've been waiting almost 15 years, and not for the 3D icebergs," wrote one Chinese man on an Internet forum.

No word if he asked for a refund.

Kate Winslet will take kids to see 'Titanic' for first time

    Paramount Pictures

Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet in 1997's "Titanic."

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, NBC News

It may be a little embarrassing for their mother, but "Titanic" star Kate Winslet says it's probably time for her kids to see her in the 1997 hit "Titanic," which is being re-released in theaters this week.

"God knows what they'll think," Winslet told NBC News' Mike Wilber, wondering aloud if Mia, 11, and Joe, 8 would find it "embarrassing."

    Follow @ msnbc_ent

Winslet says she herself has only seen the film twice since making it, and it when it was on, her main thoughts were "Somebody switch it off!" and "Oh my God, that American accent!"

She also told Wilber that she was glad she and co-star Leonardo DiCaprio got along so well. "We were honestly so lucky that we didn't hate each other," Winslet said.

The film marked the end of Winslet's life as a little-known actress and the beginning of fame she couldn't have imagined. "I was suddenly so famous and so exposed," she said. "It was a short-lived, white-knuckle ride."

    Watch the interview for yourself.

Kate Winslet: Celine Dion's 'Titanic' song makes me want to throw up

    Rick Lynch / AP

Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet have gone on and on in "Titanic."

    By Us Weekly

Don't tell Celine Dion, but Kate Winslet doesn't exactly get verklempt over "My Heart Will Go On."

The Oscar-winning actress, 36, says the classic "Titanic" theme song beloved by some and loathed by others seems to follow and "haunt" her wherever she goes, nearly 15 years after the blockbuster film and soundtrack were released.

"I wish I could say, 'Oh listen, everybody! It's the Celine Dion song!' But I don't," Winslet, now promoting the new 3-D version of Titanic, confessed to MTV News. "I just have to sit there, you know, kind of straight-faced with a massive internal eye roll."

PHOTOS: Kate Winslet's totally sexy style

The emotional, chart-topping ballad makes her "feel like throwing up," the "Mildred Pierce" star said. "It's thrilling for people to surprise me with the Celine Dion song."

The torture got even worse recently when she did an Italian TV talk show, and "they actually had a live pianist who started gently playing the theme song."

PHOTOS: LOL! Funniest, meanest celeb quotes

    Follow @ msnbc_ent

Winslet was "rather severely urged to go and sing it as though I had in fact sung it myself in the first place," she explained.

(French-Canadian sing Dion, 44, of course, did the honors on the Oscar-winning hit.)

    PHOTOS: Celeb feuds

"It was like, 'No! I'm not going to do that.' They're like, 'Oh no, come on it will be funny.'" she said of the awkward song request. "No, it won't be funny. At all. And I'm not going to."

Do you think "My Heart Will Go On" is a great song?

Polanski's 'Carnage' not worth fighting about

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, NBC News

Roman Polanski's "Carnage" puts four talented actors in one room and lets them circle each other, moving from polite to friendly to hateful and drunk in just over an hour. There are some great performances and a few memorable moments, but mostly, when it's over, you feel as if you've just eavesdropped on a fight between nasty strangers that you won't really remember a few hours from now.

"Carnage" is based on Yasmina Reza's popular play, "God of Carnage," and its theatrical origins are obvious. On the stage it would make sense that the actors would stay in one room, here, that's less so. Several times, Alan (Christoph Waltz) and Nancy (Kate Winslet) attempt to leave the New York apartment of Penelope (Jodie Foster) and Michael (John C. Reilly), but somehow never make it out. The first time, that seems plausible. But by the third, you're thinking that unless someone had broken a leg, there's just no way these people would still be together at this point. Even the characters themselves point it out.

The actors play two sets of parents discussing a fight between their sons, and their overinvolvement in their kids' lives is purely ripped from the book of Rich New Yorker problems. Why do they need to discuss this in person, with all four present? Why do they need to type up a statement agreeing on what happened? When the actors' patter is going well, you don't think about these questions, but when it drags, they loom large.

Of the four, Foster perhaps has the toughest role. Her Penelope is horrid and hateful from the first minutes of the film, when she declares that the other couple's son was "armed" with a stick, then puts on a false and cheery sense of accommodation as she changes it to "carrying a stick."

Reilly and Foster never seem like a couple. She's all about her art books, he's a blue-collar boob who's more than familiar with cleaning up vomit when a tormented Winslet lets fly.

It's easier to buy Waltz and Winslet together, and he especially is fun to watch. Hints of his Oscar-winning performance as a mind-game-loving Nazi in "Inglorious Basterds" come through in Alan, a lawyer defending a drug company that's aware its product is hurting patients. When he's not on the phone directing the public-relations chaos, he's the one who's most interested in the conflict as a game, needling each player, even his own wife, in turn, and especially making a dent in pompous do-gooder Penelope's self-image.

It occasionally seems that there must be a big plot point we haven't yet learned -- that the boy with the stick was actually the victim, that the injured child's family plans a whopper of a lawsuit, or something else that would change the lay of the land. Spoiler alert: That never really happens. The stakes are exactly what they seem to be, and they just don't seem worthy of such dramatics.
