Kristen Stewart, One Direction win twice at Kids' Choice Awards

    By Jill Serjeant, Reuters

LOS ANGELES -- Green slime spewed furiously at the Kids' Choice Awards on Saturday, where "Twilight Saga" star Kristen Stewart and British boy band One Direction won two awards apiece.

Stewart, 22, escaped the slime but plunged her hands into the green goo, saying she "felt like I have finally found my kindergartner self," as she accepted trophies for movie actress and favorite female butt kicker.

Organizers said more than 350 million votes were cast online in more than 20 categories, spanning film, television, books, music and sport for the stunt-filled annual award show on youth channel Nickelodeon.

Hosted by "Transformers" actor Josh Duhamel, who is married to singer Fergie, the show in Los Angeles featured performances by Pitbull and Christina Aguilera, as well as Ke$ha.

Johnny Depp and Katy Perry accepted orange blimp-shaped trophies for favorite female singer and movie actor respectively and both stars had words of wisdom for the audience of kids and young teens.

"This is such a cool award ... stay safe, stay in school, don't do drugs," Perry told them. Depp said he was "truly honored and humbled. Thank you for what you are, which is the future."

Selena Gomez, 20, the ex-girlfriend of pop star Justin Bieber, took the female TV actress award for her Disney Channel series "Wizards of Waverly Place," even though the show came to an end more than a year ago.

Bieber, who is on tour in Europe, was voted favorite male singer and was among several stars who did not make it to accept their award in person

No-shows included One Direction, who are also on tour and who won for favorite music group and song for "What Makes You Beautiful," "X Factor" judge Simon Cowell (favorite villain), and Ross Lynch, 17, who was named favorite TV actor for Disney Channel's pop star series "Austin & Ally."

Sandra Bullock, Neil Patrick Harris, Duhamel, Pitbull, Nick Cannon, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and dozens of audience members got covered in slime gushing out from water cannons, presenter's podiums, ceilings, and even the tail of a fake gymnastic horse.

Other awards went to Nickelodeon's "Victorious" for top TV show, "The Hunger Games" for favorite movie, "Wreck-It Ralph" for top animated movie, and race car driver Danica Patrick and basketball player LeBron James for top athletes.

The Kids Choice Awards will be broadcast around the world in more than 25 languages, Nickelodeon said.

Katy Perry taking 'Girls' Allison Williams to Grammys, not John Mayer

    Getty Images

    By Bruna Nessif, E! Online

This Sunday is officially going to be a "Girls" night for Katy Perry. The Grammy-nominated singer has decided to leave her man John Mayer at home and instead take her gal-pal and HBO star Allison Williams to the 2013 Grammy Awards this weekend (hopefully her grandma doesn't get too jealous).

"I am going to the Grammys and Katy Perry is my date," Williams told Anderson Cooper during his "Anderson Live" Thursday. "She's the hottest date. She's a friend of mine and she's nominated as she should be. I can't wait to go. Obviously she's awesome. She's the best."

John Mayer says he was "just a jerk" in past relationships

These new BFFs met just a few months ago through their boyfriends -- Williams has been dating College Humor founder Ricky Van Veen since the spring of 2011 -- and have been spotted out together on double dates.

So what will Mayer do without his main lady? Maybe some more observing of his past ways?

The crooner told "CBS Sunday Morning's" Anthony Mason in an interview (airing this Sunday), "I was just a jerk," in regards to his past relationships.

    Follow @ TODAY_ent

"It's very liberating when you finally realize it's impossible to make everyone like you," Mayer said, adding, "I wanted everybody to like me. I thought I was one shuck and jive away in every direction."

John Mayer: 'I was just a jerk' in past relationships

    By Josh Grossberg, E! Online

    John Moore / Getty Images

John Mayer -- with new love Katy Perry -- says he "was just a jerk" in his past relationships.

We're guessing John Mayer's' kiss-and-tell days are over. In a forthcoming interview with "CBS Sunday Morning," the "Clarity" singer and Katy Perry's new beau reflects harshly on his well-earned rep as a Hollywood heartbreaker who notoriously spills to the press about his breakups.

"I was just a jerk," the 35-year-old Mayer tells host Anthony Mason.

The blues rocker notes that he's changed since the days of his past interviews -- like that infamous 2010 Playboy sit-down when he compared former ladylove Jessica Simpson to "sexual napalm" and offered up TMI comments about ex Jennifer Aniston.

John Mayer: Jessica Simpson was "sexual napalm!"

"It's very liberating when you finally realize it's impossible to make everyone like you," Mayer said, adding, "I wanted everybody to like me. I thought I was one shuck and jive away in every direction."

The Grammy winner, who was forced off the road last year for 10 months so he could recover from vocal cord surgery, confessed that getting over the negative reaction resulting from his media interviews was a lot harder than dealing with the reoccurring granuloma that nearly robbed him of his voice.

Time to take a look at the many lusts of John Mayer

    Follow @TODAY_ent

Before hooking up with the "Firework" crooner, Mayer was also linked in the past to the likes of Jennifer Love Hewitt, Minka Kelly and Taylor Swift, the last of whom gave the singer-songwriter a taste of his own medicine by seemingly writing about their relationship in her hit "Dear John."

The full interview with Mayer airs Feb. 10 on CBS "Sunday Morning" at 9 a.m.

Katy Perry and Usher rock for military kids at inaugural concert

By Jordan Zakarin, The Hollywood Reporter

As dignitaries, donors and deal makers flooded into Washington, D.C. for the second inauguration of President Barack Obama, his wife headlined an event that boasted its own considerable star power, while transcending the partisan warfare that has engulfed the city.

In the main, cavernous room of the Washington Convention Center, First Lady Michelle Obama and the Second Lady, Dr. Jill Biden, hosted the Kids' Inaugural Concert, thrown for and in honor of the children of military families nationwide.

The event was officially emceed by "America's Got Talent" host Nick Cannon, who stood in front of four massive screens stretching the horizontal length of the ballroom, drenched with projection-illuminated stars and set with light blue columns that suggest the capital is a friendly place worthy of the grandeur described in the kids' textbooks.

More from THR: Lady Gaga to headline inaugural ball for Obama staffers

Usher led off the concert with a string of his biggest hits. Perhaps because he has earned universal awareness among elementary school students through his mentorship of Justin Bieber, the Grammy-winner was greeted by dancing children of all ages; there were four-year-olds standing on their chairs, humming along and bending their knees, often holding hands with their mothers.

Like many that followed, Usher gave a pep talk about the importance of youth activism, and the value of the sacrifices that military children make; it was a seemingly sincere tribute, and was repeated through video messages from stars such as those from Disney Channel's "Shake It Up"; Nickelodeon's "Big Time Rush"; the hit boy band The Wanted; Jimmy Fallon (who deadpanned and called himself One Direction's Harry Styles); Ellen DeGeneres (who drew massive cheers); and David Letterman, whose smiling words were met with absolute confused silence, an ironic highlight for any adult in the room.

Photos from THR: 10 presidents and their Hollywood pals

Several cast members from "Glee" -- Darren Criss, Naya Rivera and Amber Riley -- earned their own raucous cheers, as they performed an acoustic song each. Riley's rendition of Christina Aguilera's "Beautiful" was a particular hit.

    Follow @TODAY_ent

Among the more notable details: the concession stand in the back -- more like just a few food carts -- carried both fresh fruit and ice cream. For a first lady that has promoted healthy eating among children, it was a compromise in a special celebratory occasion.

Obama and Biden took the stage near the end, calling in groups of military kids on video chats broadcast on the big screens. The first lady in particular was earnest in her words, appealing to all ages.

More from THR: Hollywood gets invited to Obama's inauguration

"You see, when we said we wanted to host a concert to honor our military kids, let me tell you, everyone wanted to be here. Usher wanted to be here," she said. "Katy Perry wanted to be here. Nick Cannon, the folks from 'Glee,' and all the other amazing performers -- they wanted to be here, too. And let me tell you, they’re not here for me. They’re not here for Dr. Biden. They are here for all of you. Because they know the kind of sacrifices that you all make every single day."

Soon after, Perry took the stage, in her trademark Uncle Sam-style corset, with a full band and backup singers behind her. She sang for songs -- "Teenage Dream," "Part of Me," "Wide Awake" and "Firework," the last of which was played in front of a photo montage of President Obama with children -- gave the one semi-political moment of the night, celebrating "four more years" of Obama and Vice President Joe Biden.

Katy Perry, Alicia Keys, Brad Paisley and more to play at inaugural events

    By Courtney Hazlett, NBC News

As we get closer to President Barack Obama's second inauguration, celebrity acts continue to sign on to take part in the festivities. The latest boldface names to officially join in the action are Katy Perry, Alicia Keys, Usher, Brad Paisley and the cast of "Glee."

That crop of singers, along with Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Marc Anthony and John Legend, Nick Cannon, fun., and Mindless Behavior are expected to make appearances at various events, including the Kids' Inaugural on Saturday, Jan. 19, and the official inaugural balls that take place the evening of Jan. 21.

The Kids' Inaugural is hosted by first lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden and is part of their commitment to military families; the concert honors and celebrates the service and sacrifice of the U.S. military and their families. Inaugural officials have not indicated which performers will be at the Kids' Inaugural, and which will perform at other balls.

For those seeking out public performances, the actual inauguration ceremony on the West Front of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 21 is the best bet. Beyonce will be there to perform the national anthem; James Taylor is scheduled to sing "Shower the People;" Kelly Clarkson will sing "America the Beautiful."

Pop music mashup puts fresh spin on 2012's overplayed hits

    By Kurt Schlosser, NBC News

If you spent a lot of time and money listening to and accumulating the year's hottest pop hits, a new video mashup might make you wonder if it was all worth it. Sigh. Oh, sorry. Meant to say PSY.

    Watch on YouTube

We're not saying that because the crop of music in 2012 was particularly bad. (Someone is no doubt saying that, probably very loudly, but it's not us). We're just saying that when cobbled together into one 8-minute superhit, the year's music all sounds pretty much the same. You could have waited for this one song.

"Pop Danthology 2012" by Daniel kimaginati0n Kim features more than 50 songs and their accompanying video clips. Adele, Chris Brown, Rihanna, Katy Perry, One Direction, Ke$ha, Flo Rida, Kelly Clarkson, Maroon 5, Pink, Justin Bieber and PSY are some of those who made the cut.

    Follow @ NBCNewsEnt

How many times did you hear "Gangnam Style" or "Call Me Maybe" or "Somebody That I Used To Know" this year? Taken on their own, none of those songs really deserves another click. Mashed with the same-sounding hooks and Auto-Tuned vocals of Usher or Christina Aguilera or Jennifer Lopez or whomever, the new song/video becomes oddly entrancing. You might find this treatment helps make a lot of these songs fresh and enjoyable again.

If 8 minutes of dance pop was a walk in the park for your ears, maybe you're game for trying 11 hours worth of music on for size. BuzzFeed mines different genres for its Ultimate 2012 Playlist. "There's enough variety here that pretty much anyone is bound to run into a lot of stuff they either haven't heard, or perhaps had dismissed in some way," the site says. Start listening ...

Katy Perry sings at Obama rally wearing voting ballot-inspired dress

By Tina Daunt, The Hollywood Reporter

After a multistate tour on Wednesday, President Barack Obama wrapped up his day with a late-evening campaign rally headlined by singer Katy Perry at a park in Las Vegas.

Perry, wearing a dress that looked like a giant ballot, warmed up the crowd as the president traveled from Los Angeles to Las Vegas for the free gathering, which drew more about 13,000 people. The singer performed "Let's Stay Together," "Part of Me," "Teenage Dream," "Wide Awake" and "Firework."

PHOTOS: The Top Celebrity Political Twitter Commentators

Air Force One touched down a little after 9 p.m.

"The motorcade sped on a highway and arrived at Doolittle Park, a site in a largely African-American section of town," according to the pool report. "There, a large and enthusiastic crowd awaited him. An Obama 'Forward!' sign stood at the top of the stands behind the stage where Obama spoke. To the side giant white letters spelling 'Vote Early' stood atop the stands to the side of the stage."

Obama's Las Vegas speech mirrored the ones he delivered earlier in Davenport and Denver -- but with one major exception. Perry's 91-year-old grandmother was there and gave the president a kiss on the cheek, leaving a lipstick mark on his face. He joked that he had to wipe it off before First Lady Michelle Obama saw it.

"He told the crowd about being in the midst of a marathon tour and ticked off all the stops," according to the pool report. "He said he was pulling an all-nighter, adding that if you're not going to sleep, 'You might as well be in Vegas.'"

The event took place not long after Obama taped an appearance on "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno," where he blasted Republican Senate candidate Richard Mourdock's rape comments and poked fun at Donald Trump.

LOS ANGELES  — Pop star Katy Perry was named Billboard's Woman of the Year on Tuesday, after a whirlwind 12 months in which she split up with her husband and turned their breakup into a hit single and film.

Perry, 27, channeled her split with British comedian Russell Brand in late 2011 into the chart-topping hit "Part Of Me" and a 3-D behind-the-scenes film "Katy Perry: Part Of Me" that documented her personal and professional ups and downs.

The singer has won over a legion of fans, known as 'katycats,' on Twitter and Facebook with her quirky costumes and catchy bubble gum pop songs.

Forbes placed Perry at No. 3 on their highest-earning female musicians list in December 2011, estimating her pre-tax earnings at $44 million.

She has sold 48 million tracks in the United States alone, according to Billboard, including the hits "Firework," "California Gurls," "E.T." and "Hot N Cold" from her major-label 2008 debut "One Of The Boys" and 2010 album "Teenage Dream."

Perry has become a branding machine, lending her name to her own fragrance, nail polish and false eyelash lines. She is also the face of skin care line Proactiv and Popchips snacks.

Billboard's editorial director Bill Werde said in a statement that Perry was chosen for her achievements, calling her "one of the most exciting and inspiring artists in the industry."

"Katy Perry broke into the industry not even five years ago, and has already accomplished more than most artists can hope for in an entire career," Werde said.

The Billboard Woman of the Year award selects a female artist with trailblazing achievements. Previous recipients include Taylor Swift, Beyoncé and Black Eyed Peas singer Fergie.

Perry will receive the award at the 2012 Billboard Women in Music event in New York on Nov. 30.

Sources: Katy Perry and John Mayer have split

    By Us Weekly

    Getty Images / Reuters

Talk about hot and cold. After a couple months of casual dating, John Mayer and Katy Perry have split, multiple sources confirm to Us Weekly.

Photos from Us: Katy Perry's many video looks

"She's really upset about it," one insider tells Us.

Echoes another insider: "She is making it seem like it wasn't serious with John, but she is hurt."

Us Weekly first reported the budding romance, with Perry, 27, and Mayer, 34, making an "affectionate" appearance together at Soho House in West Hollywood June 19.

Photos from Us: Katy and Russell Brand

At a Beverly Hills pool party Aug. 4, recently divorced Perry and notorious Lothario Mayer "were all over each other, making out," one observer said.

A pal said earlier this month that the "Teenage Dream" singer was ready to get serious with Mayer. "She doesn't want to get her heart broken again, but she feels a real connection and wants to see where things go" with Mayer, whose exes include Jennifer Love Hewitt, Jessica Simpson and Jennifer Aniston.

Perry divorced Russell Brand earlier this year, and briefly dated Florence + the Machine rocker Robert Ackroyd in the spring.

'Amazing Spider-Man' spins up $341.2 million worldwide in first week

By Pamela McClintock, The Hollywood Reporter

    Jaimie Trueblood / Sony Pictures

Andrew Garfield is "The Amazing Spider-Man."

Marc Webb's "Amazing Spider-Man" spun a strong enough web in its worldwide debut to ensure a new future for Sony's marquee franchise, including a six-day domestic opening of $140 million.

Worldwide, the 3D reboot has earned $341.2 million in its first week, including $201.6 million internationally.

"Amazing Spider-Man" topped the international chart over the weekend with $129.1 million, followed by 20th Century Fox's "Ice Age: Continental Drift," which earned $80.6 million in its second weekend play for an outstanding foreign cume of $198 million (the 3D toon opens July 13 in North America).

Domestically, "Amazing Spider-Man" -- headlining Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone -- turned in the best performance for the July 4th frame outside of the three "Transformers" pics, "Twilight Saga: Eclipse" and "Spider-Man 2." And among reboots, it easily bested the $79.5 million earned by "Batman Begins" in its first six days, including a three-day opening of $48.7 million.

Photos from THR: How Peter Parker became a billion-dollar franchise

Opening Tuesday in North America, "Amazing Spider-Man" grossed $65 for the weekend itself, the third best three-day number of summer outside of "The Avengers" and "Brave." "Amazing Spider-Man" was up 15 percent from Friday to Saturday, indicating that the event pic is playing like a family film.

Overall, 75 percent of the audience were general movigoers ages 12 and up, while 25 percent were familes. "Amazing Spider-Man" skewed male (58 percent), while 65 percent of children were boys. The pic received an overall A- CinemaScore, and an A among moviegoers under the age of 25.

"What a spectacular relaunch," Sony worldwide president of distribution Rory Bruer said. "There are so many facets of this movie that are compelling, including the chemistry between Andrew and Emma and the out-of-the-box direction of Marc Webb."

Imax locations turned in a hefty $14.3 million, 10 percent of the domestic total. Imax should finish the weekend with a global "Spider-Man" gross north of $24 million.

Photos from THR: Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone swing into action on the red carpet

With "Amazing Spider-Man" taking up much of the oxygen at the multiplex, the weekend brought mixed results for new entries
"Savages,"  Oliver Stone's R-rated crime drama, and concert documentary "Katy Perry: Part of Me."

"Savages" did better than anticipated, grossing $16.2 million to come in No. 4 behind "Amazing Spider-Man," "Ted" and Pixar/Disney's "Brave."

"I think the picture performed beyond indstury's expectations in a marketplace where there are a lot of choices," Universal president of domestic distribution Nikki Rocco said.

Other box office observers say "Savages" may have ended up competing with fellow Universal pic "Ted" for adults, even though they are very different movies.

"Ted," financed by Media Rights Capital and directed by "Family Guy" creator Seth MacFarlane, has blossomed into the comedy hit of the summer, falling only 40 percent in its second weekend to $32.6 million for a 10-day domestic cume of $120.2 million.

Overseas, "Ted" soared this weekend in Australia and Taiwan, grossing $13.1 million.

"Savages" earned a C+ CinemaScore, likely due to its surprise ending. The pic skewed slightly female (51 percent), while 61 percent of the audience was over the age of 60.

Universal was so keen on "Savages," based on Don Winslow's best-selling novel, that it moved the film from September to this weekend hoping to woo adults. The pic marks Stone's return to more violent fare and stars Taylor Kitsch, Blake Lively, Aaron Johnson, John Travolta, Benicio Del Toro and Salma Hayek.

Universal and Relativity Media partnered to co-finance "Savages,"  which cost $45 million to produce.

Paramount Insurge's "Part of Me" posted a four-day debut of $10.3 million after opening on Thursday; for the weekend proper, the film earned $7.2 million to place No. 8.

Either way, that's substantially lower than the openings for two other concert docs: fellow Insurge pic "Justin Bieber: Never Say Never" ($29.4 million last year) and Disney's "Hannah Montana: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour" ($31.1 million in 2008), though those films debuted outside of summer.

Paramount is on solid ground financially, though, since "Part of Me" only cost $12 million to produce.

"We were the best-reviewed new movie of the weekend, so we feel confident that the film will continue to find an audience," Paramount president of domestic marketing and distribution Megan Colligan said.

"Part of Me" also received a glowing A CinemaScore, which should help spread good word of mouth, particularly as moms and younger girls become available. More than 80 percent of the audience turning out for "Part of Me" were females, while 72 percent were under the age of 25.

Among holdovers, "Brave" grossed a strong $20.2 million in its third weekend for a domestic cume of $174.5 million and $211.1 million worldwide. On Sunday -- thanks to "Brave" and "The Avengers" -- Disney becomes the first studio this year to cross the $1 billion mark in domestic grosses.

Steven Soderbergh's male striptease dramedy "Magic Mike" fell 60 percent in its weekend to an estimated $15.6 million for a stellar domestic cume of $72.8 million.

At the specialty box office, both "Moonrise Kingdom" and "To Rome With Love" made a strong showing, coming in No. 9 and No. 10, respectively.

Woody Allen's "To Rome With Love" landed on the top 10 chart in only its third weekend. Expanding into a total of 806 theaters nationwide, the Sony Pictures Classics' film grossed $3.5 million for a cume of $5.3 million.

Focus Features' "Moonrise Kingdom," from Wes Anderson, is an indie hit, grossing $4.6 million in its seventh weekend for a cume of $26.9 million.

Fox Searchlight's critically acclaimed "Beasts of the Southern Wild" grossed $375,587 as it expanded into a total of 19 theaters in its second weekend, grossing $375,587 for a location average of $19,768 and cume of $745,376.

Katy Perry holds her own in slick, entertaining doc 'Part of Me'

    Paramount Pictures

By Justin Lowe, The Hollywood Reporter

Mega-pop stardom doesn’t always translate well to film, with more than a few musicians proving just too unmarketable on camera, for any number of reasons. Singer-songwriter Katy Perry could turn out to be just the opposite, however; if the new documentary featuring the multiplatinum star gets major traction, fans could develop a decided preference for her onscreen image rather than simply settling for her music.

Although "Katy Perry: Part of Me" might not convert legions of new admirers, that hardly matters with the well-proven scope of her following. Regardless, this is still powerhouse counterprogramming opposite the "Amazing Spider-Man" onslaught and should pay healthy dividends over the Fourth of July holiday weekend and on through the summer as it accumulates substantial repeat business. Whether Monday’s sneak previews in 100 cities specifically for Perry’s Twitter followers will boost attendance depends on converting online adherents to actual ticket buyers, a major unknown.

By now the details of Perry’s life and career are perhaps too well known: Raised in a Pentecostal Christian family in Santa Barbara, Calif., she recorded a religious-themed album as a teenager and then headed for the bright lights of Los Angeles, where she struggled as a singer-songwriter, bouncing between a couple of labels before settling at Capitol Records, which released her 2008 major-label debut, "One of the Boys." Several tracks from that release, co-produced by Glen Ballard (who guided Perry’s professional role model Alanis Morissette), subsequently blew up, including the boyfriend-bashing “UR So Gay,” anthemic “Hot N Cold” and breakout hit “I Kissed a Girl.”

The album’s mix of confessional -- if rather superficial -- introspection and sexed-up sassiness set the stage for 2010’s "Teenage Dream," Perry’s follow-up that made her the only female performer to chart five No. 1 hits on a single album -- tying all-time record-holder Michael Jackson with the likes of “California Gurls,”  “Firework” and the title track.

By the time her totally sold-out 22-country California Dreams tour came around in 2011, Perry, 27, already was a major star with a sizable entourage, whimsically produced high-tech stage shows and a celebrity-actor boyfriend, British comedian Russell Brand. Launching a yearlong, 124-show tour across Europe, South America and Asia before returning to the U.S., Perry seems determined to show she's the hardest-working chick in showbiz, even if she makes clear she has a platoon of handlers, stylists and backup singer-dancers supporting her.

An amalgam of angsty singer-songwriters and celebrity starlets -- including Morissette, Liz Phair and bad-girl-phase Britney Spears, not to mention Marilyn Monroe and Rita Hayworth -- Perry’s carefully crafted persona is pitched to appeal to (mostly) female enthusiasts of nearly any age, but quite a few boys and men are onboard with her sexy, self-empowerment pop message as well. With lavishly applied makeup, outrageously colored hairstyles and eye-popping costumes emphasizing her bust and waistlines, Perry sometimes impresses as a dress-up doll with attitude.

Aggressively promoting the movie’s tagline “Be yourself and you can be anything,” her on-camera interviews and archival footage from her childhood position Perry as a driven artist inspired by a personal dream that she has pursued relentlessly. And her musical talent is considerable: She writes or co-writes her songs; performs with powerful, alternately sweet and raspy vocals; and accompanies herself on acoustic and electric guitar. Her pop-powered songwriting is distinctly pitched to appeal to a broad demographic, consisting primarily of white, middle-class fans attracted to catchy tunes and sassy lyrics.

The filmmakers go to significant lengths to establish the behind-the-scenes tone of the production, giving notable on-camera time to Perry’s manager Bradford Cobb; her personal assistant, Perry’s sister Angela, a tour co-producer;, and even her stylist and makeup artist. While the filmmakers don’t attempt to hide the slightly scandalous details of her shift away from her strict Christian upbringing and brief, disastrous marriage to Brand, whether any of these scenes are actually scripted is perhaps debatable, but more than a few appear set to capitalize on the inherent drama of the tour and Perry’s outsized personal life.

Perry’s parents, still traveling Pentecostal ministers, as well as her older sister, younger brother and sprightly grandmother lend a more intimate perspective to the project. The performer features in almost all of these scenes too, reinforcing the impression that the film is as much about Perry the brand as it is about the music.

“Katy Kat's" followers are equally devoted to both Perry the performer and Perry the musician. The sex-kitten alternative to Lady Gaga’s perplexing chameleon persona, her charisma with concertgoers is impressive as she chats them up at carefully managed backstage meet-and-greets or pulls them out of the crowd to dance ecstatically with her entourage onstage. “I feel a bit like I live in a fairytale,” she says at one point, and seems determined to deliver the same experience at her concerts.

Perry’s live shows are spectacles of excess, with massive candy-colored sets, theatrical stage lighting and flashy pyrotechnics. Although interviews absorb a significant amount of the total running time, the live performance footage delivers in an equally visceral way, with Perry parading out hits like “E.T.,” “Part of Me,” “Hot N Cold,” “Teenage Dream,” “Peacock” and a stripped-down version of “I Kissed a Girl,” then wrapping up the movie with two of her biggest hits.

Released by Paramount’s Insurge Pictures label and directed by Magical Elves Productions duo Dan Cutforth and Jane Lipsitz (the studio-filmmaker team behind "Justin Bieber: Never Say Never"), "Part of Me" is a slickly produced entertainment package crafted to appeal directly to Perry’s core following -- 22.4 million of them on Twitter alone. (Twitter is pairing with the star and Insurge to promote the film, which features frequent onscreen tweets from Perry’s fans.)

A mix of interviews, reality TV-style behind-the-scenes footage and 3D concert scenes, the movie is attractively, if conventionally, assembled. The live performances in particular feature an energized sheen sometimes missing from Perry’s music videos featuring the very same songs. Although arguably more of an adulatory artist profile than a bona fide concert doc, the movie is still likely to surpass even Perry’s personal aspiration -- “My goal is simple: to make people smile.”
