Reese Witherspoon and other stars who have waved the celeb card

    Atlanta Department of Correction

Reese Witherspoon and husband James Toth after their Atlanta arrest.

    By Randee Dawn, TODAY contributor

When Oscar winner Reese Witherspoon and her husband were pulled over by police early Friday morning in Atlanta, it turned out that even America's sweetheart couldn't resist pulling the celebrity card: "Do you know my name?" she asked the officer. "You're about to find out who I am."

For years tabloids have been doing their utmost to prove that celebrities are just like us -- but that all goes out the window when an A-lister (or aspiring A-lister) goes to pains to remind the little people that they're kind of a big deal.

When leaked, it's a PR disaster of the worst kind, especially when the celeb card is waved under the noses of regular folk (usually police officers) just trying to do their jobs.

    But Witherspoon is hardly alone.

    Margaret Cho vs. Korean spa
Korean spas are traditionally communal and, in gender-segregated areas, a place where people can soak and shvitz in the buff. But when the heavily-tattooed Cho sat down for a rest, the manager came over and asked her to cover up. As Cho explained in a Gawker essay in late March, "in Korean culture tattoos are very taboo and my body was upsetting everyone there." But cultural sensitivity or no, the comedian was angered. Cho continued, "This is something I have never done -- I actually said, in Korean, 'Do you know who I am?' I am Margaret Cho!"

LeBron James' mother vs. Miami Beach police
In 2011, Gloria James was picked up by police in Miami after reportedly assaulting valet worker Sorel Rockefeller. "I'm very, very humiliated because she told me again, 'Do you know who I am?' when she slapped me," said Sorel of the Miami Heat star's mom.

Lindsay Lohan's mother vs. Hollywood nightclub and Carvel ice cream
The mom who takes the cake (or not, as the case might be), however, has to be Dina Lohan. In 2009 she was turned away from Hollywood nightclub Villa when she tried to get both of her daughters in with her. Lindsay was 22, but Ali was only 15 at the time. "Do you know who I am?" Dina protested, it was reported at the time, and Lindsay jumped in with "You're making a huge mistake. Huge!" A year later, she was busted when trying to pick up a free cake from Carvel with a promotional item giving Lindsay free ice cream for 75 years. She was turned down (because the entire Lohan family had been abusing the privilege), and as Radar reported, she said, "It just shows how (Lohans) get treated so much worse than regular people." And yes, the cops were called.

Tom Hanks vs. West Fargo diner
Let's face it, if a celebrity asked one of us for a special favor, who would say no? In 2012, a jet company Tom Hanks was using called up the TNT Diner in North Dakota and asked owner Tammy Hagensen if she'd open her doors early for an unnamed special guest, reported the Associated Press. Curious, Hagensen opened at 4 a.m. and in walked Hanks, his wife Rita Wilson and their two sons. Hanks was cool: Later he tweeted that the diner "makes killer breakfast." We all know Tom Hanks is the most fun celebrity out there -- but that's another reason why we occasionally get a Witherspoon-esque blunder -- few people can resist doing a celebrity a solid. (And by the way, that Jane-Fonda-turned-away-from-a-steakhouse story? Fake, fake, fake.)

Still, there may yet be hope for celebrities. Though the absence of smug hubris rarely gets reported on, there's at least one incident worth noting from 2009:

Bob Dylan vs. New Jersey police
According to The Awl, police were summoned to a home in Long Branch, N.J., after a report of an "eccentric-looking old man" wandering in the front yard. Officer Kristie Buble showed up and questioned him -- and he said he was Bob Dylan. But she didn't believe him, and took him back to his hotel where he and his manager verified his ID with a passport. (Later reports indicated Dylan might have been looking for a house two blocks away where Bruce Springsteen wrote "Born to Run.") You gotta respect an actual living legend who not only didn't pull out the celebrity card, but doesn't appear to even carry one.

Lindsay Lohan all smiles on arrival for Letterman appearance

    Getty Images

    By Kurt Schlosser, TODAY

We've spent so much time documenting what Lindsay Lohan wears to various court appearances, you can't blame our impulse to report on what she's wearing on this sunny, warm Tuesday in New York City.

The actress was all smiles as she showed up for her appearance on "Late Show With David Letterman" and struck the requisite pose outside the Ed Sullivan Theater.

Lohan sported a simple white blazer over a black top and black pants with black boots. Her red hair was pulled back behind her black Wayfarer sunglasses.

It's the actress' first appearance on "Late Show" since 2007. Her latest film, "Scary Movie 5," opens this week.

Check back later in The Clicker for more on how Lohan's interview goes.

Tired of Kim Kardashian and Lindsay Lohan? Fame is not fleeting, study finds

    By Stephanie Pappas
    LiveScience

Fifteen minutes of fame? More like 15 years. Once a celebrity claws their way to the top, they're unlikely to get knocked off the pedestal, a new study finds. In fact, 96 percent of people mentioned in newspapers more than 100 times in a given year were already famous three years before.

"There is almost a consensus among scholars in the field of the sociology of fame, that most fame is ephemeral," study researcher Eran Shor of McGill University said in a statement. "What we've shown here that is truly revolutionary is that the people who you and I would consider famous, even the Kim Kardashians of this world, stay famous for a long time. It doesn't come and go."

    Slideshow: Lindsay Lohan

    Charley Gallay / Getty Images

    Launch slideshow

    They're not going anywhere
That's bad news to those tired of seeing reality star Kardashian or actress Lindsay Lohan plastered over every tabloid. The finding also doesn't bode well for those aiming for the spotlight: Turnover in the celebrity industry is low, the researchers report in April in the journal American Sociological Review.

Shor and his colleagues tracked names mentioned in English-language newspapers over several decades. They found that lasting fame is the norm in all areas, including sports, politics and entertainment.

    17 Species Named for Celebrities

They also found the celebrities most likely to get name-checked by entertainment sections. Between 2004 and 2009, they found that the 10 most frequent names in newspaper entertainment articles were Jamie Foxx, Bill Murray, Natalie Portman, Tommy Lee Jones, Naomi Watts, Howard Hughes, Phil Spector, John Malkovich, Adrien Brody and Steve Buscemi. All of these entertainers boast years- or decades-long careers. ("The Aviator," a movie based on the life of billionaire and movie producer Howard Hughes, came out in 2004, which might explain why Hughes' name was so common despite his death in 1976.)

    The fame loop
Fame is self-reinforcing, the researchers wrote. A new talent or random chance might propel an individual into the spotlight, but once they're there, the media and audiences tend to devote attention to them simply because they are famous — and because competing media outlets are devoting attention to them, as well.

There are exceptions to long-lasting fame, of course, said study researcher Arnout van de Rijt, a sociologist at Stony Brook University.

"Leonard Cohen is still well-known today, over 40 years after he first became famous," Van de Rijt said in a statement. "But Chesley Sullenberger, the pilot who received instant fame after safely landing a disabled plane on the Hudson, is a name that will likely be forgotten pretty quickly. What we have shown is that Leonard Cohen is the rule and Chesley Sullenberger the exception."

Lindsay Lohan booked on charges of lying to police, reckless driving

    Santa Monica Police Department

    By Natalie Finn, E! Online

Lindsay Lohan is in the system. Again. The 26-year-old actress was booked on charges of reckless driving and lying to a peace officer Tuesday at the Santa Monica Police Department, after which she was released from custody and sent on her way.

In her imminent future, however, is 90 days of locked rehab, 30 days of community labor, 18 months of psychotherapy, fines and restitution for the other driver.

Lindsay's going to locked rehab -- here's what that means

Lohan pleaded no contest Monday to the aforementioned charges stemming from a car crash last summer, after which authorities determined that she was behind wheel despite her initial claim to the contrary.

"As you know, yesterday the court outlined the terms of probation," which required the "Liz & Dick" star to appear for booking within seven days, Lohan attorney Anthony Falangetti exclusively tells E! News. "And, of course, Lindsay is committed with following the court and did as she was told."

Lohan is required to provide proof to the court by May 2 that she has enrolled in a residential treatment program.

Meanwhile, despite being photographed in a car that appeared to be approaching AV Club in Hollywood, Lohan has flatly denied that she was out partying last night, just hours after a court appearance that included getting glitter-bombed on her way inside and her father lashing out at her lawyer afterward.

Lindsay Lohan and attorney Mark Heller in Los Angeles Superior Court on Monday, March 18.

    By Courtney Hazlett, TODAY

Updated, 3:15 p.m. ET: Lindsay Lohan admitted in Los Angeles Superior Court on Monday that she was in violation of her probation and failed to obey all laws after a June 2012 car accident.

In front of Judge James Dabney, Lohan accepted a plea agreement that mandates that she spend 90 days in a "locked rehab facility" -- which means she cannot leave before the end of the 90-day period, even with "permission slips" or "day passes." She also must complete 30 days of community labor, which can be served in New York.

Lohan was also ordered to undergo 18 months of psychological counseling (which the judge confirmed Lohan had already begun) and there are fines and restitution involved as well.

Lohan lied to police when she said she she wasn't behind the wheel of her Porsche when it crashed into the back of a truck on June 8, 2012, in Santa Monica, Calif. As a result of that wreck and her actions immediately following, she was charged with obstructing an officer, lying to an officer, and reckless driving.

Her probation -- part of a plea bargain involving the theft of a $2,500 necklace in 2011 -- was revoked. Both the misdemeanor charges and the probation violation charges were due to be settled during the scheduled trial, which could have resulted in a jail sentence.

Dabney told Lohan to stay out of cars and out of trouble, Reuters reported.

"A suggestion: Don't drive. You're in New York, you don't need a car. ... This is it. If you violate your probation we're not going to be having these discussions," the judge said.

Lohan arrived approximately 48 minutes late for the 8:30 a.m. PT start of proceedings. Clad in a white and pink pantsuit, she was showered with a gold glitter bomb as she passed photographers with attorney Mark Heller.

Lohan is showered with gold glitter as she enters the courthouse on Monday.

When will we next see Lohan in court? If all goes well, we won't. The judge specified that the 26-year-old actress doesn’t have to appear for compliance dates so long as she's in compliance with the terms set forth.

Lindsay Lohan is set to guest star on Charlie Sheen's "Anger Management.

    By Anna Chan, TODAY

Charlie Sheen has a new goddess, and her name is Lindsay Lohan. FX announced on Monday that the actress is set to guest star as herself on an upcoming episode of the actor's "Anger Management."

According to the network, the troubled starlet will develop a romantic relationship with Sheen's character, Charlie Goodson. This will come about after she becomes one of his therapy patients. No specific air date has been announced, but FX noted that the episode would air sometime in April.

This won't be the first time the two have worked together. Sheen and Lohan both had small roles in the film "Scary Movie 5." Like Lohan's episode of "Anger Management," the movie is scheduled for an April release.

While filming "Scary Movie 5," rumors surfaced that the actress refused to smooch the actor. Regardless of whatever went down on the set of the film, the two have been pretty chummy as of late, with Sheen giving her $100,000 to pay off some back taxes, offering to give her advice, and now a guest role on his hit show.

"Anger Management" airs at 9:30 p.m. Thursdays on FX.

Lindsay Lohan's lawsuit over Pitbull's 'Give Me Everything' lyrics dismissed

    By Natalie Finn, E! Online

    Getty Images file

Pitbull has locked up a win over Lindsay Lohan.

The actress' lawsuit against the Cuban-American rapper, Ne-Yo and Afrojack over their smash-hit 2011 song "Give Me Everything" -- in which Pitbull raps once, "I've got it locked up like Lindsay Lohan" -- was dismissed Thursday by a federal judge, who ruled the tune's lyrics are protected by the First Amendment, which covers freedom of speech and creative expression.

"This will further solidify the rights of artists to express themselves in song," Pitbull's attorney, Marcos Jimenez, told E! News Thursday, noting that his client "wasn't shocked," but "disappointed" when Lohan first sued in August 2011.

"Give Me Everything" collaborator Nayer wasn't sued, but she called the suit "bull"

Pitbull "is very pleased," Jimenez added. "He felt it was very important to address this head on to protect his right and the rights of other artist. He decided to fight this."

    View the dismissal

In response to a request from Jimenez filed last March, Senior District Judge Denis R. Hurley also fined Lohan's attorney $1,500 for sanctionable plagiarism and false representation. Pitbull's camp had argued that lawyer Stephanie Ovadia had cribbed portions of her opposition to the rapper's motion to dismiss the case from online legal sources and newspaper articles.

Lindsay Lohan's pricey amFAR gala gown? Ripped!

Lohan filed suit against Pitbull, Ne-Yo, Afrojack, J Records, Sony Music Entertainment, RCA Music Group, Polo Grounds Music and related parties nearly a year and a half ago, both objecting to the negative connotation of the "locked up like Lindsay Lohan" line and claiming that she should have been compensated for the use of her name in the song.

Lindsay Lohan in the now destroyed Theia gown at the amfAR New York Gala on Feb. 6.

    By Jennifer Chan, E! Online

You may recall Lindsay Lohan's sparkling Theia gown from the recent amfAR gala in New York, a shimmering nude and silver bugle-beaded fringe gown from the spring 2011 collection valued at $1,750 that turned heads all night long at the charity event.

Now take a peek at the current condition of the dress, which was on loan to Lohan, and drastically altered -- for the worse.

To date, we have confirmation that the dress still hasn't been returned to the label, and it appears as though the star took a pair of scissors to the delicate fabrication and created a messy haphazard minidress of her own.

Lindsay Lohan's amfAR gown: Charlie Sheen offered to pay for half of her dress

A rep from Theia tells us, "The dress was loaned in good faith to Phillip Bloch, Lindsay Lohan's stylist. We were informed by Mr. Bloch's assistant that the dress was damaged during the course of the evening. The dress has not been returned, and it wasn't until we saw the photos in the media that we became aware of the actual condition of the gown."

Oops. LiLo, you should know better! Sure, plenty of stars borrow beautiful dresses, but seldom do we see shredded evidence of a DIY project gone wrong.

We reached out to Bloch for further explanation.

"What we hear happened was the dress ripped when she was out and then she decided to cut it into a mullet minidress. It took days to get the dress back. Dress has been returned to us and it is being handled since the designer now does not want the torn dress back," he tells E! News. "I love Lindsay and I would work with her again, but you just have to stick to some rules. The magic of Lindsay is she picked the dress out of 40 dresses and she looks great in everything. No alterations were needed. That said, I work in this industry and was embarrassed because it is someone else's property and I don't want to ruin relationships, but it is being handled."

Lesson learned -- at least we hope so!

Lindsay Lohan's attorney hopes to clear her in nightclub assault case

    By Courtney Hazlett, TODAY

Following an appearance by Linsday Lohan's attorney Mark Heller at the Manhattan Criminal Court Monday morning, there has still been no formal complaint filed against the actress for allegedly assaulting another woman at a New York nightclub.

    Andrew Gombert / EPA

Attorney Mark Heller, left, speaks with reporters outside of Manhattan Criminal Court after filing paperwork on Lindsay Lohan's behalf on Monday.

Lohan was arrested in late November after she allegedly got into a confrontation at Avenue, a Manhattan night spot. At the time, Heller said that Lohan was the "victim of someone trying to capture their 15 minutes of fame."

After making an appearance at the court clerk's office Monday, Heller told TODAY.com that Lohan's appearance was not neccesary because there was still no accusatory document filed with the courts. If and when there is a document, he'll be pleading "not guilty" on behalf of his client, he said. "The D.A. is still assessing the matter," Heller said. "I've been working closely with them and I'm hopeful that I'll be able to have Lindsay exonerated."

Heller expects to be notified in the coming days about a future court date.

Heller added that things are already looking up for his client. "A psychic fortune teller has told Lindsay that 2013 will be extremely lucky for her. And that’s all she needs, just a little luck on her side."

For her part, Lohan has kept a fairly low profile recently. She tweeted a New Year's eve message, saying she was "blessed" and "grateful," and only a handful of photos of her were snapped recently in London.

Lindsay Lohan's probation revoked after car crash charges

    By Eric Kelsey, Reuters

LOS ANGELES -- Lindsay Lohan faced the prospect of being sent back to jail after a judge in Los Angeles revoked her probation on Wednesday in the light of new charges over a June traffic accident.

Lohan, 26, who was not present at the hearing, is on probation for a 2011 jewelry theft. The "Mean Girls" actress has been in and out of rehab and jail since a 2007 arrest for drunk driving and cocaine possession.

Lohan will be arraigned on Jan. 15 on charges of reckless driving and lying to police when she claimed she was not behind the wheel of a car that smashed into a truck in June in the California beach city of Santa Monica.

On the same day, Los Angeles Superior Court Commissioner Jane Godfrey said she would set a date for another hearing to determine whether or not Lohan violated her probation, and should be sent back to jail.

Lohan's attorney, Shawn Holley, did not enter a plea on the actress's behalf on Wednesday, but she argued in court that Lohan had not violated the terms of her probation.

The former "Parent Trap" child star, who was once considered a promising Hollywood leading actress, was arrested in New York on a misdemeanor assault charge on the same day the Santa Monica car crash charges were filed last month.

Lindsay Lohan is staying the course. Not the behavioral one advised by the law, according to some, but most definitely the geographical one mapped out by The Wanted's tour manager.

Lohan will not be showing up for a court date Wednesday in Los Angeles pertaining to her summer car accident, instead opting to jet overseas with the five new men in her life, sources confirm to E! News.

The Wanted's Jay McGuiness wears "Free Lindsay" t-shirt

To be clear, Lohan is not going to get in trouble for not attending the 8:30 a.m. hearing. She is not required to appear because the charges pending against her are misdemeanors and attorney Shawn Holley will be there to represent her.

Lohan is facing counts of willingly resisting, obstructing, or delaying an officer in the course of their duties; providing false information to an officer; and reckless driving stemming from the aftermath of her June 8 smashup on Malibu's Pacific Coast Highway.

Lindsay's party pals through the years

But, for now, it's off to London and then Dubai with rumored love interest Max George and his boy-band mates within the next 24 hours, a source says.

Lindsay hangs with Max George at the Dream Hotel after Jingle Ball NYC

Lohan saw them open for Justin Bieber at Madison Square Garden on Nov. 28 -- most notably because she was arrested late that night for allegedly smacking a woman in the face in a dispute having to do with George -- and then resurfaced for the first time after the bust backstage at Jingle Ball in Philadelphia, where The Wanted performed.

Lindsay Lohan not under the influence when arrested, says lawyer

    By Mark Malkin, E! Online

Despite what many may be assuming about Lindsay Lohan's state of mind when was arrested on assault charges early Thursday morning at a New York City lounge, her lawyer insists she wasn't under the influence.

"I can tell you when I was with her (Thursday) morning; she was in great condition," attorney Mark Heller tells E! News. "She was certainly not intoxicated, certainly not under the influence of drugs. She was clear (and) lucid, her eyes were clear. No alcohol involvement whatsoever on this occasion."

However, Heller said he didn't ask LiLo if she had been drinking or doing drugs at any point during the evening. "It wasn't even brought up," he said, adding, "She was perfectly appropriate. And the police made note of that."

Everything we know about Lindsay's latest arrest

Lohan is set to face formal charges at a Jan. 7 arraignment, but Heller believes he'll prove her innocence before then.

"We are going to be working very earnestly to establish that no charges should even be lodged," he said. "(The police) have already made arrangements to get the video from the ... club, which hopefully will reveal some exonerating information. After that, they could just walk away from the case and decline to even prosecute."

Asked how the "Liz & Dick" star is doing right now, Heller said, "She's sleeping. She was up all night long and went through a very rough ordeal."
