'Lost' star Dominic Monaghan: 'I didn't realize how' powerful Twitter was

    Jason Merritt / Getty Images

    By Susan Hornik, TODAY contributor

When Dominic Monaghan made headlines with his tweets bashing the show "Swamp People" and accusing former 'Lost' co-star Matthew Fox of beating women, he didn't know what he was getting himself into.

“I didn’t realize how much of a powerful medium Twitter was,” Monaghan told The Clicker. “I went on it just out of curiosity and to build a bit of a fan base for my BBC series, 'Wild Things.' I realized you can actually directly interact with people and break some of these myths."

"I’m a huge fan of countering ideas or rumors or notions that people might have about things or you or anything in general," he said of his May tweet about Fox. "I like to make people understand that that angle might need a second look or not necessarily be true at all. That’s something I’m passionate about,” he said. “There are things that go hidden about a lot of people. I find myself becoming a little exhausted with this kind of public media spin about things or people."

"I find myself sometimes on Twitter being in opportunities where I can say that idea that you have about this particular thought that you heard about me is simply not true," Monaghan said. "And Twitter is a great way to do it.”

Were his former "Lost" co-stars supportive of his outspokenness against Fox?

“I think they, for the most part, stay out of any kind of controversy because they don’t want to be supporting things. But if someone asks me my opinion about something ... I think one of the worst things in the world is to be fake. I’d rather tell the truth and get in trouble for it than lie and everyone will think it’s OK,” Monaghan said.

In July, the actor practiced what he preached when he tweeted strong words against the treatment of alligators in History Channel’s “Swamp People.” It created a mini Twitter backlash.

“To be honest, I received probably 85 to 90 percent support and then 10 percent of the people telling me their opinions on the contrary. I’m fine with that, if people don’t agree with me," he said.

Monaghan also explained he understands that culling of the reptiles may sometimes be necessary, but what he doesn't accept is turning that process into a form of entertainment. "I eat chicken but I wouldn’t like to see a program that shows the killing of chickens. I just don’t think that that’s entertaining television.”

This is why, with his new upcoming animal friendly series, “Wild Things,” Monaghan is very careful about everything involving the preservation of natural habitats.

“We definitely try and be as respectful as possible. We obviously don’t break too many branches intentionally or turn over too many rocks. We’re very careful about where we step. We don’t use lights because we film in the day," he said. "If we do any stuff at nighttime, I use infrared cameras. So, we try not to disturb the kind of delicate balance of nature as much as we can. But my hope is that in the tiny amount of disruption that we cause, we also help the animals out to some degree by making people realize that they’re special and significant and important.”

Monaghan is appearing on Adult Swim's "Childrens Hospital" at midnight Thursday into Friday morning on Cartoon Network.

Master and commander? Russell Crowe gets lost kayaking off Long Island

    U.S. Coast Guard / AP

A photo provided by the U.S. Coast Guard shows Russell Crowe, center, with Coast Guard Petty Officers Robert Swieciki, left, and Thomas Watson on Sunday.

    By NBC News wire services

Oscar-winning actor Russell Crowe lost his way kayaking in the waters off New York's Long Island and was picked up by a U.S. Coast Guard boat and ferried to a harbor, officials said Sunday.

The 48-year-old actor was kayaking with a friend and launched from Cold Spring Harbor Saturday afternoon on the Long Island Sound, according to U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Robert Swieciki. As it got dark, the two got lost and headed for shore, beaching their kayaks in Huntington Bay, nearly 10 miles east from where they had set out.

The U.S. Coast Guard was patrolling the area and heard Crowe call out to them from the shore around 10 p.m., Swieciki said. The "Gladiator" actor and his friend, who Swieciki didn't recognize, paddled over to the boat. The Coast Guard officers pulled them up and, along with their kayaks, gave them a ride to Huntington Harbor.

"He just needed a little bit of help, he just got a little lost," Swieciki said. "It wasn't really a rescue, really, more of just giving someone a lift."

    Slideshow: Russell Crowe

Swieicki said no one was injured, and the two men were wearing life vests. He said the actor, who was grateful and friendly, seemed like he was a fairly experienced kayaker.

Crowe, who starred in the 2003 naval film "Master and Commander," sent a Twitter message about 1:30 a.m. Sunday thanking the officers, and saying he was out on the water four and a half hours.

"Thanks to Seth and the boys from the US Coast Guard for guiding the way...4 hrs 30 mins, 7m(11.2km)," he wrote.

Crowe is on Long Island filming a new movie called "Noah" in Oyster Bay. The biblical epic is directed by Darren Aronofsky and scheduled for release in 2014.

Crowe won an Academy Award for best actor for his role as a Roman soldier called Maximus in "Gladiator."

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Oops! $8,600 Rembrandt etching lost in the mail

    By Reuters

OSLO -- A Norwegian art gallery lost a Rembrandt etching worth up to $8,600 in the mail after trying to save money on courier and insurance costs, the gallery's chief said Thursday.

The Soli Brug Gallery in Greaaker, about 50 miles south of Oslo, purchased a copy of Rembrandt's "Lieven Willemsz, van Coppenol, Writing-Master" made in around 1658, from a British dealer -- only to have it lost in the Norwegian postal system.

"Using a courier or special insurance is quite expensive so we have used regular mail until now," Ole Derje, the gallery's chairman said. "It is worth around 40,000 to 50,000 crowns ($6,900-$8,600) and the postal service is offering us compensation of 500-1,000 crowns."

Derje said his gallery, which is displaying works by Dürer, Rembrandt, Goya, Munch and Dali, received notice to pick up the package but when he went to collect it, it was nowhere to be found.

Derje declined to name the seller, citing confidentiality concerns.

"We are sorry that this has happened; we have advised him to use a more appropriate form of mail when sending items that are worth as much as this with the appropriate insurance connected," said Hilde Ebeltoft-Skaugrud, a spokesman for the postal service.

'Lost' star Dominic Monaghan slams 'Swamp People'

    Jason Merritt / Getty Images

    By Anna Chan, TODAY

Former "Lost" star Dominic Monaghan isn't afraid to share his thoughts on Twitter. In May, the actor slammed co-star Matthew Fox in 140 characters or less, accusing the man behind Jack Shephard of beating women. Monaghan's latest target? History Channel's "Swamp People."

"If my hero #steveirwin was around those shows about killing alligators wouldn't be on tv. I'm gonna stop them. Watch this space," Monaghan tweeted on Wednesday. "If alligator populations need to be controlled I understand but the act should not be glorified on tv.disgusting.These are living creatures."

The reality program follows a group of "swampers" in the Atchafalaya Swamp in Louisiana during the 30-day alligator hunting season.

The actor went on to discuss the issue with his followers, calling the program "a show about rednecks killing gators," and said the smaller alligators don't pose a threat to humans.

He also pointed out that he takes issue with the "continuing the demonization of crocodilians" and how the show doesn't educate but is "shock tv."

"As I said I blame the network not the people.i consider it tortuous to stalk net n shoot an intelligent animal," he tweeted. Monaghan also noted that he's no fan of "Deadliest Catch" either, but has less of an issue with the Discovery hit because "at least you don't see these animals shot at."

History Channel has not yet responded to a request for comment.

Though the actor received some heat from his followers for his thoughts on "Swamp People," he seemed to take it all in stride. "I genuinely love haters.they hone my skills.they teach me things.they make me smile.they help me change.i love love interacting with them," Monaghan tweeted.

The animal lover is currently working on a new travel show for BBC America called "Wild Things With Dominic Monaghan," which will feature the actor searching for interesting creatures in various parts of the world. A premiere date has not yet been announced.

'Lost' star uses Twitter to accuse Matthew Fox of beating women

    By Courtney Hazlett, TODAY

In a series of blunt posts on his Twitter feed, "Lost" star Dominic Monaghan is accusing his onetime co-star Matthew Fox of beating women.

Actor Dominic Monaghan, left, and Matthew Fox.

Monaghan was in the midst of a fan Q&A on Twitter earlier this week when a user going by the screen name Becca wrote, "holla at matthew fox and tell him to get a twitter i beg of you." Monaghan's reply: "he beats women. No thanks."

    Twitter

Becca and Monaghan continued their conversation -- Becca wanted to know "what about all those good times you had together?" to which Monaghan replied, "how do you know we ever did? you don't know either of us. he beats women. not isolate incidents. often. not interested."

    Twitter

Monaghan went on to defend himself against those saying he was making false accusations.

    Twitter

TODAY.com reached out to Fox's manager and attorney for comment, but they have yet to respond.

Fox and Monaghan worked closely together on "Lost" from the series' beginning in 2004. While Monaghan's character Charlie was killed off in the season three finale in 2007, he returned for a number of episodes before the show ended its run in 2010. In a case of art apparently imitating life, Charlie and Fox's character Jack were often at odds with each other.

While "Lost" was on the air, personal conflicts between Monaghan and Fox, if there were any, were never publicized. That said, Fox is no stranger to off-screen controversy. In 2010, a stripper told In Touch magazine that the married actor had an affair with her (which he later denied); in 2011 Fox was charged with assault after allegedly punching a female bus driver in the breasts and groin; and just recently, Fox was arrested for allegedly driving while intoxicated.

'Lost' co-creator Damon Lindelof regrets promising answers

    Mario Perez / ABC

Jack's days on the island ended in the "Lost" series finale, but many unanswered questions remained for fans.

    By Ree Hines, TODAY contributor

The final episode of "Lost" aired two years ago, but for fans of the mystery, talk about that finale and the unanswered questions it left behind never ended. Some loved it, some hated it and many didn't understand it. But "Lost" writer, producer and co-creator Damon Lindelof has no regrets about how it all played out.

He does, however, regret what he promised before the end.

"If there was one regret that I had (it's that) there were times, over the course of the show, where in interviews I said 'the answers are coming,'" he confessed during a chat with The Verge.

Lindelof explained that as the end drew nearer, his position changed. He said he even warned that those who wanted answers wouldn't be happy with the finale.

    Follow @TODAY_Clicker

But he is happy with those loose ends.

“I take responsibility and authorship for 'Lost,' and in terms of my own feelings about the ending, I make no apologies for it," he insisted. "I do feel like that was the ending that I wanted to do, and I was always comfortable with the ambiguity of the show."

What do you think about Lindelof's comments? And what do you think of the "Lost" finale looking back on it now? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.
