Peter 'Drunklage' steals the show on 'Saturday Night Live'

    NBC

Peter Dinklage and Bobby Moynihan on Weekend Update.

    By Anna Chan, TODAY

Cheers! "Game of Thrones" star Peter Dinklage made an appearance on "Saturday Night Live's" Weekend Update to chat taxes alongside Drunk Uncle (played by Bobby Moynihan) and Seth Meyers.

Drunk Uncle introduced his brother-in-law, Peter "Drunklage," about halfway through the segment when he admitted to watching the hit HBO drama and poked fun at the show, saying, "So I'm not King Joffrey, OK?! ... 'I'm a little jerk king!' Pfft. That's not me."

That's when "Drunklage" boozily rolled onto the set. After mumbling about 99 tumblers of scotch in his mouth and today's kids not wearing garters, the man behind Tyrion Lannister slurred, "You know what's in my tumbler? REGRET." He then went on to talk taxes and let fly a joke that left the audience "oooooh-ing": "I wish the IRS stood for Immigration Return Services." Check it out:

In other guest appearances, former NBA star Dennis Rodman poked a little fun at his friendship with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in the show's cold open.

As Moynihan's supreme leader finished talking about how he nailed his NCAA brackets, the athlete came out to give his pal a fist bump. When asked if he had anything to add, Rodman slightly botched the show's famous intro and yelled, "Live in New York, it's 'Saturday Night'!" The line is "Live from New York, it's 'Saturday Night'!"

Actress Melissa McCarthy hosted the show once again, and this time took on the recent scandal surrounding Rutgers coach Mike Rice, a ham-cooking contest, "The Voice" and wearing high heels.

Vince Vaughn is set to host next week.

Melissa McCarthy back on 'SNL' -- who's hungry for ranch dressing?

    NBC

H-V-R! H-V-R! Melissa McCarthy gets a faceful of Hidden Valley Ranch during her first hosting appearance on "SNL."

    By Kurt Schlosser, TODAY

Melissa McCarthy is returning to host "Saturday Night Live" this week and we've got two reasons why we hope that's great news: Arlene and Linda.

Our two favorite skits from her October 2011 hosting stint were her overly sexually aggressive office worker, Arlene, and her overly excited salad dressing taste-tester, Linda.

Both characters are certainly reminiscent of Megan, the "Bridesmaids" character which earned McCarthy an Oscar nomination. The film was a hit in theaters as McCarthy was tapped for her first "SNL" appearance.

You'll never looks at a horse balloon or a bottle of ranch dressing the same way again.

Check out the promos for McCarthy's return on April 6. The musical guest is Phoenix.

'Identity Thief' steals box office again

    By Reuters

Comedy "Identity Thief" snatched the weekend box office title in the United States and Canada during its third weekend in theaters, narrowly beating new action movie "Snitch" as Hollywood focused on Sunday evening's Academy Awards ceremony.

"Identity Thief" starring Melissa McCarthy grabbed $14 million in ticket sales from Friday through Sunday, according to studio estimates compiled by Reuters.

"Snitch" featuring Dwayne Johnson finished close behind with $13 million. The animated offering "Escape From Planet Earth" took in $11 million to finish third in its second week in theaters.

The win was the second for "Identity Thief," which led the charts when it debuted February 8 and finished in second place a week ago. The adult comedy features McCarthy as a woman who steals the identity of a hapless man played by Jason Bateman.

"Identity Thief" has collected $93.7 million at North American (U.S. and Canadian) theaters to date.

Moviegoing was typically slow for an Oscars weekend. Total sales for all films ran slightly over $1.4 billion, a 6.6 percent drop from the same weekend last year, according to box office tracker Hollywood.com.

"Snitch" stars Johnson as a father who goes undercover to clear his son to keep him out of jail after he is wrongly accused of drug dealing. Susan Sarandon and Benjamin Bratt also star.

Ahead of the weekend, forecasters saw "Snitch" pulling in $10 million to $12 million. Summit Entertainment, a unit of Lions Gate Entertainment, bought U.S. distribution rights for about $5 million.

The weekend's other new movie, low-budget horror flick "Dark Skies," collected $8.9 million to debut in sixth place. The movie stars Keri Russell as a mother working to protect her children from alien invaders.

The film cost $3.5 million to make and was produced by "Paranormal Activity" producer Jason Blum. The Weinstein Company distributed the movie.

Last weekend's leader, "A Good Day to Die Hard," dropped to fifth place. The fifth movie in the Bruce Willis action franchise took in $10 million this weekend.

"Identity Thief" was released by Universal Pictures, a unit of Comcast Corp. "Snitch" was distributed by Summit Entertainment, a unit of Lions Gate Entertainment. The Weinstein Company distributed "Escape From Planet Earth" and "Dark Skies." "A Good Day to Die Hard" was released by News Corp's 20th Century Fox studio.

Critic who called Melissa McCarthy a 'hippo' takes credit for film's success

By Seth Abramovitch , The Hollywood Reporter

    Universal Pictures

    Melissa McCarthy in "Identity Thief."

Rex Reed has two words to describe "Identity Thief" star Melissa McCarthy: "completely classy."

That magnanimous assessment stands in stark contrast to the New York Observer film critic's mean-spirited pan of McCarthy's new comedy, in which he called the actress "tractor-sized" and a "female hippo," among other insults.

More from THR: Hollywood slams Rex Reed for attacking Melissa McCarthy's weight

In his first time speaking out on the incident, Reed refused to back down from his choice of words, but said McCarthy "has remained completely silent [on the controversy], and I think that's completely classy."

Talking to WOR, a New York-based AM radio station, on Monday, Reed theorized that the outrage was actually orchestrated by "the big publicity machine called Universal Pictures" who mobilized people to attack him in their "desire to sell tickets to a bad movie."

Reed took credit, too, for "Identity Thief's" stellar opening weekend take of $36.6 million, saying the controversy was "what sold the tickets."

Addressing the name-calling, Reed told host Mark Simone, “I object to using health issues like obesity as comedy talking points. That’s what this girl does, this Melissa Manchester," he said, confusing McCarthy's name with that of the "Don't Cry Out Loud" singer.

More from THR: 'Identity Thief' No. 1 with $36.6 million

"I have too many friends that have died of obesity-related illnesses, heart problems and diabetes...I have helped people try to lose weight, and I don't find this to be the subject of a lot of humor," Reed said.

Responding directly to his critics, of which there are many -- including "Bridesmaids" director Paul Feig, who invited Reed "to go f--- himself," and "Modern Family's" Eric Stonestreet, who tweeted, "Turns out Rex Reed didn't die sad and alone 10 years ago." -- Reed responded, "Don't make me a villain."

"She is crying all the way to the bank!" he said.

Critic calls Melissa McCarthy 'tractor-sized,' 'hippo' in review of new film

    By Kurt Schlosser, TODAY

Updated 6:30 p.m. ET: Veteran film critic Rex Reed disliked the new comedy "Identity Thief" so much that he resorted to critiquing the physical appearance of actress Melissa McCarthy, the film's star.

In a review in The New York Observer, the longtime critic calls McCarthy "tractor-sized" and refers to her character as a "humongous creep." The actress stars alongside Jason Bateman in the tale of a businessman who has his identity stolen by a woman on the other side of the country. The film opens in theaters Friday.

    Universal Pictures

Melissa McCarthy and Jason Bateman, background, in a scene from "Identity Thief."

Reed refers to McCarthy as a "hippo" and "a gimmick comedian who has devoted her short career to being obese and obnoxious with equal success."

The Emmy-winning star of the CBS comedy "Mike & Molly," McCarthy had a high-profile turn in the 2011 comedy "Bridesmaids," which earned her an Academy Award nomination. She has openly discussed her weight in the past.

"Sometimes I wish I were just magically a size six and I never had to give [my weight] a single thought," McCarthy, 42, told Good Housekeeping last fall. "But I am weirdly healthy, so I don’t beat myself up about it -- it wouldn’t help, and I don’t want to pass that on to my girls."

Reed, 74, has been a well-known film critic for decades, and his work has appeared in numerous newspapers and magazines. His bio on the New York Film Critics Circle website says he is the author of eight books about the movies, and he once co-hosted the syndicated television show "At the Movies."

Reed's focus on McCarthy's weight drew a healthy dose of criticism in reader comments on the Observer website.

"I don't know who you think you are but it's a damn shame that at this point in your career you've resorted to trashing the way a woman looks as part of your gimmick here," wrote Ashbey Riley.

"What benefit is there to attacking Melissa McCarthy personally when you're supposed to be talking about the quality of the film?" wrote Grae Drake. "There are so few people you can count on in this over-saturated industry for true film criticism, and you just ruined any remaining shreds of credibility you had."

"I get you hated the movie," said Robin Mitchell. "I have hated lots of movies and didn't need to resort to name-calling and fat shaming. Professionals do not behave this way."

Alonso Duralde, a Los Angeles-based film critic for TheWrap.com, told TODAY.com Thursday that it's OK if Reed doesn't think McCarthy is funny. "He has every right not to be amused" by her, Duralde said. But it's a "cheap shot" to go after her appearance.

"'Identity Thief' is so terrible there are plenty of things to talk about without resorting to Melissa McCarthy's weight," Duralde said.

Duralde also pointed out, for those who may think Reed's criticism is leveled at McCarthy only because she is a woman, that Reed is an equal-opportunity offender. Duralde pointed to the critic's January review of "The Guilt Trip," starring Seth Rogen and Barbra Streisand, in which Reed writes: "Mr. Rogen, who looks like Limburger cheese, has carved an inexplicable career out of playing dorks who make the word 'retarded' politically acceptable again."

Melissa McCarthy sometimes wishes she was 'magically a size 6'

Melissa McCarthy arrives at the 64th Primetime Emmy Awards in Los Angeles in September.

    By Us Weekly

Melissa McCarthy would happily lose a few pounds -- if she only knew how. In the November issue of Good Housekeeping (excerpted via The Daily Mail), the 42-year-old "Mike & Molly" star speaks candidly about her struggle to lose weight.

"Sometimes I wish I were just magically a size 6 and I never had to give it a single thought. But I am weirdly healthy, so I don't beat myself up about it -- it wouldn't help, and I don’t want to pass that on to my girls." (McCarthy and her actor husband, Ben Falcone, are parents to daughters Vivian, 5, and Georgette, 2.)

    PHOTOS: Melissa McCarthy's style evolution

Because she regularly plays tennis and does Pilates, McCarthy is dumbfounded as to why she hasn't slimmed down. "I don't really know why I'm not thinner than I am," the "Bridesmaids" actress says. "I don't really drink soda, I don't have a sweet tooth, and we eat healthfully at home."

    PHOTOS: Naughty star appetites

McCarthy knows she's not the only woman who is unhappy with her body. "Pretty much everyone I know, no matter what size, is trying some system," she tells the magazine. "Even when someone gets to looking like she should be so proud of herself, instead she's like, 'I could be another three pounds less; I could be a little taller and have bigger lips.' Where does it end?"

According to McCarthy, she's learned to make peace with her body by focusing on the positive. "You just have to say, 'It's pretty damn good. I am right here at the moment and I'm OK with it. I've got other things to think about.'"

McCarthy's new movie, "Identify Thief," also stars Jason Bateman and Amanda Peet. It hits theaters nationwide on Feb. 8, 2013.
