Over the last year, the 53-year-old singer has cancelled 21 shows after suffering from a bleeding ulcer and Barrett's esophagus. On Tuesday, he was hospitalized in San Francisco for double pneumonia.

"Despite his best efforts to try to continue touring, Morrissey has to take a hiatus and will not be able to continue on the rest of the tour," the singer's representative said in a statement. "Morrissey thanks all of his fans for their well wishes and thoughts."

Morrissey is canceling a total of 22 remaining dates, beginning with Monday's show in Lawrence, Kan. Refunds for the tickets will be available at the point of purchase.

Morrissey is making history at the Staples Center.  For the first time in history, the singer's sold out March 1 show at the Los Angeles stadium will be its first that all the vendors within and around the venue will be 100 percent vegetarian.

Morrissey, a long-time animal activist and vegetarian, says in a press release, "I don't look upon it as a victory for me, but a victory for the animals."

Morrissey recently made headlines for slamming the Beckhams

Morrissey urged the Staples Canter to close down their McDonald's outlets and they agreed, a request that had previously been denied Sir Paul McCartney, according to the release.

In addition to banishing the sale of "flesh as food" at the singer's request ( "Meat is Murder," indeed ), the Staples Center and promoter Goldenvoice will each donate a portion of the proceeds of ticket sales to PETA.

British rock singer Morrissey is postponing six performances on his U.S. tour due to a bleeding ulcer, his spokeswoman said on Sunday.

"Morrissey is expected to make a full recovery and thanks everyone concerned for their support during this time," his representative Lauren Papapietro said in a statement.

Morrissey, the former lead singer for 1980s alternative rock band The Smiths, checked into Beaumont Hospital on Friday in the Detroit suburb of Royal Oak, Papapietro said.

She declined to say if he remains hospitalized.

Due to his bleeding ulcer, Morrissey is postponing his upcoming shows in Asheville, N.C.; Nashville, Tenn.; Atlanta, Ga.; Lawrence, Kan.; Clear Lake, Iowa; and Lincoln, Neb., Papapietro said.

He plans to resume his tour on February 9 in Las Vegas.

Due to an illness in his band, Morrissey, 53, canceled his show Thursday in Flint, Mich., and postponed a Friday night performance in Minneapolis and another engagement set for Saturday night in Chicago, Papapietro said.

Morrissey, whose hits include "First of the Gang to Die" and "Irish Blood, English Heart," toured North America last fall, played some shows in Australia and New Zealand in December and returned to the United States this month.

He kicked off his latest tour with a performance of his unreleased song "Action is My Middle Name" on "The Late Show with David Letterman" in New York.

Morrissey rips 'blustering jingoism' of London Olympics

Ernesto Ruscio / Getty Images file

Morrissey performs in Rome in July.

    By Rolling Stone

In a letter to members of his True To You fanclub, Morrissey bashed the "blustering jingoism" of the 2012 London Olympic Games and compared present-day Britain to Nazi Germany, writing, "The spirit of 1939 Germany now pervades throughout media-brand Britain." Full text of the letter follows below.

I am unable to watch the Olympics due to the blustering jingoism that drenches the event. Has England ever been quite so foul with patriotism? The 'dazzling royals' have, quite naturally, hi-jacked the Olympics for their own empirical needs, and no oppositional voice is allowed in the free press. It is lethal to witness. As London is suddenly promoted as a super-wealth brand, the England outside London shivers beneath cutbacks, tight circumstances and economic disasters. Meanwhile the British media present 24-hour coverage of the 'dazzling royals,' laughing as they lavishly spend, as if such coverage is certain to make British society feel fully whole. In 2012, the British public is evidently assumed to be undersized pigmies, scarcely able to formulate thought.

As I recently drove through Greece I noticed repeated graffiti seemingly everywhere on every available wall. In large blue letters it said WAKE UP WAKE UP. It could almost have been written with the British public in mind, because although the spirit of 1939 Germany now pervades throughout media-brand Britain, the 2013 grotesque inevitability of Lord and Lady Beckham (with Sir Jamie Horrible close at heel) is, believe me, a fate worse than life. WAKE UP WAKE UP.

Cheer up, and get ready to meet The Smiths, again

    By Tony Sclafani, msnbc.com contributor

    Yui Mok / AP file

Morrissey performs in Manchester, England, in 2004.

Smiths fans, be happy. And sad. A ton of remastered songs from the 1980s "mope rock" favorites are coming your way.

Rhino Records’ April 3 re-release of The Smiths catalog is sure to evoke mixed emotions among fans: first, elation that the catalog was recently remastered by guitarist Johnny Marr, and second, an overwhelming sense of melancholy upon hearing Morrissey’s pained vocals and woeful melodies again.

All of that, of course, was what made The Smiths unique back in the day and eventually turned them into legends, despite the fact that they never made much of an impression on the American charts. They were, however, highly influential. By going against the grain and producing gloomy guitar rock in the days when escapist synth pop ruled, the band helped set the stage for alternative rock. They’re also credited with helping to start Britpop, since the group made sure to mix its mope with a healthy dose of melody in many of its singles (“This Charming Man,” “William, It Was Really Nothing”).

The Smiths released four studio albums from 1984 to 1987. All of them are part of the re-release package, along with the live album “Rank” and the three collections of singles, B-sides and BBC sessions that once emanated from countless dorm rooms: “Hatful of Hollow,” “Louder Than Bombs” and “The World Won’t Listen.” If you’ve tried to find fresh copies of these albums but couldn’t it’s because several have gone out of print and “The World Won’t Listen” hasn’t even gotten an official U.S. CD release until now.

But be forewarned before taking this nostalgia trip. If you thought tracks like “Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now,” “How Soon is Now,” or “There Is a Light That Never Goes Out” came off as melancholy back in the Reagan Era, they’re a whole lot more wistful now that the once-trendy band -- and its core audience -- are both a quarter of a century older.

Talk about a reason to mope.

Check out a few Smiths classics below. And pick your head up and get over to Facebook to discuss the band.
