Tom Cruise's 'Oblivion' obliterates competition with $38 milllion box office

By Pamela McClintock, The Hollywood Reporter

Tom Cruise's sci-fi pic "Oblivion" opened to $38.2 million at the domestic box office to come in No. 1 after a better-than-expected performance and despite a B- CinemaScore. Overseas, the Universal pic continued to please, grossing $33.7 million in its second weekend for an international cume of $112 million and worldwide total of $150.2 million.

The movie marks the actor's best North American opening outside of the "Mission: Impossible" franchise, not accounting for inflation.

Directed by Joseph Kosinski ("Tron: Legacy"), "Oblivion" co-stars Morgan Freeman, Olga Kurylenko, Andrea Riseborough, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Melissa Leo. Peter Chernin and Dylan Clark produced. The pic cost Universal and Elliot Inc. at least $120 million to produce.

Adult male moviegoers fueled "Oblivion," making up 57 percent of the audience.

Cruise's track record domestically has been mixed. "Jack Reacher" debuted to $15.2 million in December on its way to earning a so-so $80 million in North America. Conversely, "Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol," opening to $29.6 million in December 2011, turned into a box-office monster, grossing nearly $700 million worldwide.

    PHOTOS: 30 groundbreaking sci-fi films

Sci-fi is a familiar genre for Cruise, who starred in "War of the Worlds" and "Minority Report," both directed by Steven Spielberg.

Set in 2077, 60 years after Earth has been destroyed by aliens, "Oblivion" follows one of the last humans stationed on the planet as he uncovers a troubling secret.

Universal decided to get a jump on the beginning of the crowded summer box office by opening "Oblivion" now. The studio has gone aggressively after males by advertising during major sporting events including the NCAA's March Madness.

Speaking of sports, Legendary and Warner Bros.' Jackie Robinson biopic "42" continued to score strong numbers in its second weekend, declining a slim 34 percent to come in No. 2 with $18 million. The baseball drama's 10-day domestic total is $54.1 million.

Paramount's "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" jumped the $300 million mark in its fourth weekend, thanks to stellar $33 million opening in China. The sequel has grossed $111.2 million domestically and $211.7 million internationally for a worldwide cume of $322.9 million. In China, the pic outpaced the first film by a four-to-one margin.

Expanding nationwide over the weekend, Derek Cianfrance's indie drama "The Place Beyond the Pines," starring Bradley Cooper and Ryan Gosling, placed No. 6 in North America. The film, from Focus Features and Sidney Kimmel, took in $4.7 million for a total $11.4 million.

'Enraged' Harrison Ford storms out of 'Jimmy Kimmel Live' after slamming Chewbacca

    By Drusilla Moorhouse, TODAY contributor

Unless you want to invoke the wrath of Han, don't ask Harrison Ford about "Star Wars."

    Watch on YouTube

Only recently -- since über-director J.J. Abrams confirmed he was helming the sequel, "Star Wars: Episode VII" -- has the actor expressed much enthusiasm about his iconic character in the franchise, beloved mercenary Han Solo.

On "Jimmy Kimmel Live" Wednesday, Ford riffed on the secrecy surrounding the movie (with rumors swirling that Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill might reprise their original parts) and his historical reluctance to discuss his breakout role.

He flatly refused to discuss the new film during the interview, and when his host asked whether he'd take audience questions, Ford agreed -- on one condition: "No 'Star Wars' questions."

    Follow @TODAY_Clicker

Of course, every person who took the microphone was outfitted in a "Star Wars" costume -- and thrown off-guard by the actor's mandate.  Obi-Wan Kenobi stuttered, "Do you like being in movies?" A bearded dude dressed as Princess Leia asked an even more mundane question: "Are you hungry?"

But Chewbacca refused to play ball. His comments, spoken in his native Wookiee language (Shyriiwook, to be precise), enraged his former co-star.

"You son of a b----," Ford snarled, as the audience roared in laughter. "What do you want?"

"Yeah, you'd like that wouldn't you?" he said after Chewy's next remark. "Always trying to blame me. You're the one who couldn't keep it in your furry pants!"

"Actually he's not wearing any -- he doesn't wear pants," Kimmel noted.

"I rest my case!" retorted the actor.

In a profanity-laced faux tirade, Ford accused Kimmel of engineering the showdown with the creature who betrayed him.

"He knows what he did. She was my wife! You Wookiee (expletive)."

Finally, Ford couldn't take it anymore and stormed off the set.

"I'm out of here," he said, with one parting message to his former co-pilot.

"You -- I'll see you in hell!"

Let's hope they patch things up, because actor and comedian Patton Oswalt features them prominently in his epic eight-minute "Star Wars" filibuster. The eight-minute outtake of his rant, featured Thursday night on NBC's "Parks and Recreation," hit nearly 1 million YouTube views in a single day. In his suggested storylines for the franchise sequels, he includes this gem featuring Kimmel's guests:

"And that's when Han drops Chewbacca's severed head onto the floor!"

Guess that's one way to bury the hatchet.

'Man of Steel' trailer explains Superman's famous 'S'

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, NBC News

"Man of Steel," the reboot of the Superman movie franchise, is just two months away, and a new trailer released Tuesday has fans buzzing.

    Watch on YouTube

We see a baby Superman being sent to Earth ("our hopes and dreams travel with you," says Russell Crowe as Jor-El) and then an adolescent Supes saving his classmates from a sinking school bus, scenes that have appeared in earlier trailers.

    Follow @ NBCNewsEnt

New Earth dad Kevin Costner gives him some parental love and hopeful words, but young adulthood looks tough for our hero, eventually played by Henry Cavill. He grows a beard, hitchhikes, appears to join a crew on "Deadliest Catch."

But then, as we knew he would, he finds his feet and his role. And just in time, too because evil General Zod (Michael Shannon) is ready for battle.

But our favorite scene comes at the end of the trailer, when Lois Lane (Amy Adams) asks her soon-to-be-beau what the S on his chest stands for.

"It's not an S," he says. "On my world, it means hope."

Actor in infamous 'Star Wars' scene has died

Albert L. Ortega / Getty Images file

    Richard LeParmentier in 2012.

    By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, TODAY

Actor Richard LeParmentier, whose character was infamously choked by villain Darth Vader in the original "Star Wars" movie, has died at age 66, his representative confirms to TODAY.

LeParmentier died suddenly, his son Tyrone told Derek Maki, who represented the actor.

LeParmentier's name may be unfamiliar to many, but "Star Wars" fans well know his most famous scene.

"Don't try to frighten us with your sorcerer's ways, Lord Vader," says LeParmentier in his role as General (sometimes described as Admiral) Motti. "Your sad devotion to that ancient religion has not helped you conjure up the stolen data tapes, or given you clairvoyance enough to find the rebels' hidden fort--"

    Watch on YouTube

At that point, LeParmentier's character stops speaking and grabs at his throat as if he was being choked by an invisible hand. Darth Vader (voice of James Earl Jones) then delivers one of his most famous lines, "I find your lack of faith disturbing."

The actor's family noted that LeParmentier, who lived in Bath, England, was visiting his children in Austin, Texas when he died. The family remembered him in a statement that fondly referenced his most famous scene.

"Every time we find someone's lack of faith disturbing, we'll think of him," the family statement said. "At age 66, Richard Le Parmentier is one with the Force."

The statement went on to thanks LeParmentier's friends and fellow "Star Wars" fans, saying it was tributes from those people who gave the family "all the best lines in this message."

LeParmentier, who was also a screenwriter, was still working right up until the end, the family said. "He edited another draft of his latest project two days before death, with its sorcerer's ways, took him from us," the statement noted in another homage to the famed scene. "He has gone to the Stars, and he will be missed. We love you dad, and thank you to everyone. Love, Rhiannon, Stephanie, and Tyrone Le Parmentier."

LeParmentier also had numerous film and television appearances, though his most famous after "Star Wars" was the role of Lt. Santino in 1988's "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" He also provided the narration for the 2004 video game "Soldiers: Heroes of World War II."

'Veronica Mars' movie raises $5.7 million: Slick casting and fast filming expected

    By Drusilla Moorhouse, TODAY contributor

The "Veronica Mars" movie project concluded its wildly successful Kickstarter campaign April 12, raking in a record-setting $5.7 million in pledges.  So now what?

    Michael Desmond / AP file

Fans came through on Kickstarter to support a "Veronica Mars" movie.

Marshmallows are going to get s'mores!

("Marshmallows" is star Kristen Bell's affectionate name for fans, based on a line from the series' pilot.)

And not just s'more "Mars": The campaign's more than 91,000 contributors -- the most project backers in Kickstarter history -- will receive additional rewards (exclusive stickers) in addition to the incentives promised for specific donation amounts.

WHO: Nearly everyone who used to be friends, a long time ago. Besides Bell herself, fans can count on most of Veronica's Scooby gang to join her on the big screen. Based on official confirmations, comments from creator Rob Thomas and the actors' own Twitter accounts, that includes Keith Mars (Enrico Colantoni), Logan Echolls (Jason Dohring) and Dick Casablancas (Ryan Hansen) -- all of whom appeared in the Kickstarter launch video. Wallace (Percy Daggs III), Weevil (Francis Capra) and Deputy Leo (Max Greenfield, now starring on "New Girl") have all tweeted encouraging messages.

    Follow @ TODAY_ent

Thomas also confirmed to Wired that Ken Marino will reprise his role as slick PI Vinnie Van Lowe -- and even joked in the Kickstarter video that he would resurrect Lily Kane: " There's gotta be a way to write Amanda Seyfried into the movie. I mean, there's dead-dead and then there's TV dead."

WHAT: "The movie title is going to simply be 'Veronica Mars,'" Thomas tweeted, offering up a few cheeky sequel suggestions ("The Password to Lockspur Lane" or "Electric Boogaloo"). He's already written the first draft of the script, which will center around Neptune High's 10-year reunion. The series' end coincided with Veronica's last investigation, and as Thomas ominously told Wired, "Not only that was the last time she worked a case, but she left Neptune shortly there after. She ruins her father’s career as an officer of the law, and he gets indicted."

When the movie begins, Veronica is a recent graduate of Columbia Law School, "waiting to take the bar, and interviewing with law firms," said Thomas. "But then something happens in Neptune that pulls her back, and makes her metaphorically pick up her magnifying glass again."

WHERE: Neptune, obviously! Actually, Thomas said the film will likely shoot in San Diego, where the original series was filmed. The gang is also headed to San Diego Comic-Con in July, hosting a party for fans and possibly (fingers crossed!) hosting a panel at the actual convention.

WHEN: Filming begins this summer for a 2014 release.

WHY: Do you need to ask? If so, carve out some time to marathon the entire series. You won't regret it!

HOW: Well, $6 million helps -- along with the backing of the studio. Warner Bros just began running web ads congratulating Thomas and Bell on the success of the movie's fundraising campaign.

What do you hope to see in the big-screen version of "Veronica Mars"? Share your dreams and congrats on our Facebook page!

7 wackiest moments from the MTV Movie Awards

    By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, TODAY

"The Avengers," Bradley Cooper, and Jamie Foxx were among the big winners at Sunday's MTV Movie Awards. But the show is more about moments than filling trophy cases. Here are seven moments that had us doing double-takes.

    Bottomless contest
Seth Rogen, Danny McBride and and Zac Efron presented the award for "best shirtless perfoirmance" and decided to stage their own "bottomless" contest, with Rogen revealing a forest of fake hair and McBride displaying a giant chastity belt. Efron did pretty much nothin'.

    Kevork Djansezian / Getty Images

Seth Rogen, Zac Efron and Danny McBride presented the best shirtless performance award with a bottomless contest of their own.

    Speaking of shirtless...
While Taylor Lautner won the award for best shirtless performance, he sure didn't look the part as he accepted the honor, hitting the stage in a fat suit. Don't worry fans, it's not real.

    Danny Moloshok / Reuters

Taylor Lautner spoofed his win of best shirtless performance by wearing a fat suit.

Will Ferrell gets a Kanye West moment
Will Ferrell accepted the comedic genius award in a money-printed suit and with a fake Chinese family. But he wasn't fully in control of the jokes. "Parks and Rec" star Aubrey Plaza tried to pull a Kanye West and yank Ferrell's trophy out of his hands. He seemed confused, she seemed out of it, and awkwardness ensued. MTV says the moment was unscripted and that Plaza was asked to leave the show after attempting the prank. She jokingly later thanked West on Twitter for the idea.

    Where was Jennifer?
Jennifer Lawrence shared the best kiss award with Bradley Cooper but wasn't there to accept it. She also won the best female performance award but since she wasn't there, the award wasn't handed out on the broadcast. A scheduling conflict reportedly kept the young star away.

    Rebel gets risque
To no one's surprise, host Rebel Wilson pushed the envelope with her jokes, touting a stuffed koala named Chlamydia and pretending to give birth (to a doll) during a striptease.

    Danny Moloshok / Reuters

Rebel Wilson was a rebellious host indeed.

    Date my daughter
Jamie Foxx attended the awards with his lovely daughter Corinne Bisho, 19. When Foxx received the MTV Generation award, he mentioned repeatedly in his rambling speech that she is "gorgeous and single." Thanks, dad?

    Jordan Strauss / AP

    Brad Pitt's hair
Pitt presented the award for best movie to "The Avengers," but appeared not to have combed his hair or washed before attending the awards.

Brad Pitt wasn't his usual glamorous self while presenting the best movie award.

Fast-food workers serve up classic role in pop culture

Fast-food workers aren't just teenagers looking for a little after-school cash these days. The demographics of the job have changed with the economy and with necessity.

But will Hollywood ever catch up with reality? For years, fast-food workers -- with notable exceptions -- have mostly been portrayed as high-school doofuses playing pranks behind greasy counters. Here's a look at some of the most memorable cinematic counter staff.

‘Saturday Night Live’ -- 'Cheeseburger, cheeseburger'
“What’ll ya have?” was never a more inconsequential question. With John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray behind the counter at The Olympia Restaurant, the menu was simple and oft-repeated to great Greek-accented effect. “Cheeeseburger, cheeseburger, cheeseburger, cheeseburger ...” You want a Coke? “No Coke -- Pepsi.” Fries? “No fries -- chip.” Every customer who sits at the counter is denied menu items ranging from a grilled cheese to eggs. At least Gilda Radner gets it right when she orders “the usual.” Cheeseburger!    --Kurt Schlosser

'Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle'
Harold and Kumar don't work at White Castle -- they just long for it. But the boys do meet an employee of a Burger Shack (formerly White Castle), played by Anthony Anderson. First, he tries to talk a fellow employee into burning down the restaurant, then he confesses to Harold and Kumar about a certain disgusting ingredient he's added to the secret sauce.    --Gael Fashingbauer Cooper

    Watch on YouTube

    'The Simpsons'
One of the most famous TV fast-food workers is "The Simpsons" pimply-faced teen (real name: Jeremy, apparently). He mostly works at Krusty Burger, and he fulfills all the stereotypes of a fast-food employee: acne, voice breaking, picking his nose. But cut him some slack. After all, he has to deal with Homer, who so loves the Ribwich that Jeremy has to call for a "Drool Clean-Up at Register 4!"    --G.F.C.

    Watch on YouTube

    'Beavis and Butt-Head'
Beavis and Butt-Head wouldn't have been good employees everywhere, but they were especially terrible workers at Burger World. They deep-fry a ringing phone, ignore customers, throw raw meat into the ceiling fan and serve up worm fries to the health inspector. In their defense, those worm fries didn't look that bad.   --G.F.C.

    Watch on YouTube

    'Fast Times at Ridgemont High'
Poor Brad. He just wants to pay off his car and is stuck working in fast food – and dealing with the likes of Spicoli. Fired at All-American Burger for mouthing off to an angry customer, Judge Reinhold’s character is further demeaned by having to don the pirate uniform at his next job, Captain Hook’s Fish and Chips. Embarrassed on a delivery run, Brad quits and eventually makes the big move to convenience store clerk -- where at least he gets to be the hero.    --K.S.

    Watch on YouTube

    'Reality Bites'
“You got time to lean, you got time to clean,” David Spade’s overly cocky Wienerschnitzel manager reminds us. He’s the perfect jerk for the job in the 1994 slacker film, as Lelaina (Winona Ryder) learns she has to be “150 percent on her toes, 150 percent of the time” to be a cashier at the fast-food joint. A condescending interview that takes place in the food-prep area culminates with a degrading math quiz: “85 and 45? Go!” – K.S.

    Watch on YouTube

    .

    'She's All That'
"She's All That" was one of the most popular teen films of the 1990s, but its concept goes way back -- think of it as a "My Fair Lady" for a new generation. Freddie Prinze Jr.'s Zack makes over mousy (well, she wears glasses) Laney (Rachael Leigh Cook). In a memorable scene, Zack seeks Laney out at her job at a Middle Eastern fast-fooderie, where she wears a hideous falafel hat and has to ask customers if they want to supersize their falafel balls.  --G.F.C.

    'Mystic Pizza'
Before she was an Oscar-winner, Julia Roberts was slinging pizza as part of an ensemble in this 1988 romantic comedy. Her waitress character Daisy wants to get out of small Mystic, Conn., but her rivalry with her sister and a romantic interest with a blueblood get in her way.    --Randee Dawn

    Watch on YouTube

    'Good Burger'
A raucous comedy about fast-food workers so ditzy that when someone tells one to “watch his own butt” he starts spinning around like a dog trying to do just that, “Good Burger” doesn’t try to be anything other than goofy, gross-out, greasy surface.   --R.D.

    Watch on YouTube

    'Better Off Dead'
After his girlfriend dumps him, teenager Lane (John Cusack) sees his life as a dead end – and part of that has to do with his mindless job at Pig Burgers. He gets some terrific fantasies out his dreary job, though, creating a giant Frankenstein burger that comes to life and starts shredding on the guitar.    --R.D.

    Watch on YouTube

    'Coming to America'
When Prince Akeem of Zamunda (Eddie Murphy) wanted to find a bride, he jetted off to America … and took a fast-food job at McDonald’s clone McDowell’s in Queens, NY, hoping for a queen of his own. Akeem took his duties hilariously to heart, whether collecting garbage or mopping up – or falling for the owner’s daughter.    --R.D.

'Catching Fire' teaser trailer lights up MTV Movie Awards

    By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, TODAY
Jennifer Lawrence wasn't at Sunday night's MTV Movie Awards, but her presence was felt anyway. Not only did she win the best kiss award (sharing the honor with "Silver Linings Playbook" co-star Bradley Cooper), but she was seen in the "Catching Fire" teaser trailer premiere.
    Watch on YouTube

"Catching Fire" is the second film in the "Hunger Games" series, and hits theaters Nov. 22. Co-star Liam Hemsworth introduced the teaser later in the awards to much applause.

    Follow @ TODAY_ent

The second movie takes place after Katniss (Lawrence) and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) have won the Hunger Games, but they're far from safe. As seen in the trailer, President Snow (an evil Donald Sutherland) isn't about to let them live happily ever after.

"She has to be eliminated," he says of Katniss.

Plenty of familiar faces return in the teaser, including former winner Haymitch (Woody Harrelson), bubbly escort Effie Trinket (Elizabeth Banks), Katniss' little sister Prim (Willow Shields), and of course, her childhood love, Gale Hawthoren (Hemsworth).

The past winners of the Hunger Games are now all viewed as a threat to President Snow's evil administration, and they're now all in danger, as the districts of Panem fight to rebel against their murderous government. The odds are not in their favor indeed.

The film about the Hall of Fame player topped industry forecasts for an opening of about $20 million. It defeated new horror spoof "Scary Movie 5," the second-place finisher with $15.2 million from Friday through Sunday, according to studio estimates.

Animated Stone Age adventure film "The Croods" took the No. 3 slot. The Dreamworks Animation production rung up sales of $13.2 million in its fourth week for a total of $142.5 million in the U.S. and Canada.

In international markets, Tom Cruise sci-fi thriller "Oblivion" debuted with $61.1 million in 52 countries, distributor Universal Studios said. The film opens in the United States and Canada on Friday.

"42" stars TV actor Chadwick Boseman, seen on shows such as "Fringe" and "Justified," as the legendary Robinson. The title refers to Robinson's jersey number with the Brooklyn Dodgers. Harrison Ford plays Branch Rickey, the Dodgers general manager who paved the way for Robinson to enter Major League Baseball as its first black player in 1947.

Audiences thought the movie was a home run, awarding a rare A+ rating in polling by survey firm CinemaScore. Critics also gave "42" high marks, with 75 percent recommending the movie among reviews on the Rotten Tomatoes website.

"It was big in small towns, large towns, urban markets and suburban markets," said Dan Fellman, president of theatrical distribution for Warner Bros., the Time Warner Inc unit that distributed the film. Legendary Pictures produced the film for $40 million.

Box office analyst for Hollywood.com Paul Dergarabedian noted that the film's 25 percent uptick on Saturday indicated strong word of mouth.

"Scary Movie 5" revived a franchise that was dormant for seven years after the first four films grossed a combined $818 million worldwide.

The new installment, produced for less than $20 million, stars Ashley Tisdale and features cameos by troubled actress Lindsay Lohan and Hollywood bad boy Charlie Sheen. The film pokes fun at pop culture phenomena like racy novel "Fifty Shades of Grey" and recent Jessica Chastain horror flick "Mama."

Ahead of the weekend, box office pundits predicted an opening of up to $17 million for "Scary Movie 5."

"We would have liked to have seen a bit higher of a number," said Erik Lomis, distribution president for The Weinstein Co, the privately held company that released the movie.

The fifth "Scary Movie" installment opened lower than any of the previous ones.

In fourth place was action movie sequel "G.I. Joe: Retaliation," which earned $10.8 million during its third week in theaters.

Last week's box office winner "Evil Dead" fell to fifth place this week, taking in $9.5. The horror film is a remake of a 1981 classic of the genre.

"The Croods" was produced by Dreamworks Animation and distributed by 20th Century Fox, a unit of News Corp. Viacom Inc's Paramount Pictures released "G.I. Joe: Retaliation." "Evil Dead" was distributed by Sony Corp's movie studio. Comcast Corp's Universal Studios released "Oblivion." Viacom Inc's Paramount Pictures released "G.I. Joe: Retaliation." MTV Movie Awards honor kisses, villains, shirtlessness

    By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, TODAY

The Avengers assembled Sunday night in Los Angeles, with the hit comic-book movie taking home three golden popcorn trophies at the MTV Movie Awards.

The blockbuster hit based on Marvel Comics superheroes won the best fight award, and Tom Hiddleston, who played evil Loki in that film, won for best villain. But there was an even bigger award ahead, as "The Avengers" won the show's final honor, best movie, an honor presented by Brad Pitt.

Bradley Cooper claimed two honors, winning for best male performance for "Silver Linings Playbook" and sharing the best kiss award with Jennifer Lawrence.

"No way that this movie would've had a life without the fans," Cooper said in his best kiss acceptance speech. Lawrence was not in attendance, but Cooper praised her as "great to kiss."

When it came to an award that only MTV could give -- Best WTF Moment -- Samuel L. Jackson and Jamie Foxx won for a violent Southern plantation shoot-em-up scene from Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained."

Emma Watson was awarded the MTV Trailblazer Award, which is given to a young actor who has inspired others even at an early age. Watson, 23, is best known for her role as Harry Potter's brainy pal Hermione, but has also acted in "My Week With Marilyn" and "The Perks of Being a Wallflower."

Watson joked that when she looked back on her career, she remembered many things, "notably how bad my hair was in the first Harry Potter film."

Will Ferrell won the comedic genius award, and accepted it while wearing sunglasses and a suit that looked as if it was made out of $100 bills.

Taylor Lautner won the best shirtless performance award for his role as hunky shape-shifting wolf Jacob Black in "Breaking Dawn Part 2." Onstage, Lautner hid his much-vaunted figure with a fake fat suit, and joked, "for us shirtless actors out there, this is like the Oscar."

Seth Rogen, Danny McBride and and Zac Efron presented Lautner's award and decided to stage their own "bottomless" contest, with Rogen revealing a forest of fake hair and McBride displaying a giant chastity belt.

Jamie Foxx won the MTV Generation award, the night's highest honor. Tom Cruise, Reese Witherspoon, Sandra Bullock and Johnny Depp are among those who've won the award in the past.

Australian actress Rebel Wilson hosted the show and wasn't afraid to joke about everything from North Korea to a stuffed koala bear she claimed was named "Chlamydia." She also won the breakthrough performance award for her role in "Pitch Perfect," which also won for best musical moment.

Also during the show, Liam Hemsworth presented a short teaser from "Catching Fire," the second film in the "Hunger Games" movie series. Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson and Jennifer Lawrence star in the much-awaited movie, which comes to theaters in November.

'Downton Abbey's' Dan Stevens caught in a love triangle in 'Summer in February'

    By Randee Dawn, TODAY contributor

"Downton Abbey" fans may already be missing Dan Stevens, who played Matthew Crawley on the popular PBS series until the end of last season. And they may have been further traumatized when recently the actor was revealed to have dropped some pounds and let his hair go from wavy blond to dark and cropped.

Which means that the trailer for the upcoming movie "Summer in February" should come as a great relief. No, Stevens is not reprising his role as Matthew Crawley, but based on the trailer he looks exactly like that character -- blond, fit and in period wear -- and is in the midst of a tormented love triangle in pre-WWI England.

Based on the book by Jonathan Smith, "Summer in February" takes place initially at a Cornwall artists' colony, and focuses on the real-life love lives of artist Alfred Munnings (played in the film by Dominic Cooper), his friend Gilbert Evans and the woman they both were enamored with, Florence Carter-Young (played by Emily Browning).

    By Randee Dawn, TODAY contributor

It'll be several months yet before audiences get a second glimpse of Jennifer Lawrence in action as Katniss Everdeen in "Catching Fire," but a few more stills from the film have been released -- and as readers of the books know, her deep-in-thought look is completely on-point.

In the new photos, Lawrence has returned home to District 12 and is giving a hug to her sister Primrose (played by Willow Shields), but there's a distant look in her eyes.
