'Walking Dead' star joins 'MythBusters' for zombie episode

    Gene Page / AMC

Michael Rooker plays Merle Dixon on "The Walking Dead."

    By Ree Hines, TODAY contributor

Just what is the best way to kill a legion of undead baddies? Flamethrower? Shotgun? Machete? Of course, on "The Walking Dead," Daryl Dixon is pretty fond of the crossbow method.

Well, fans of the zombie genre may soon have the definitive answer thanks to the fact-finding crew from "MythBusters."

According to Entertainment Weekly, the best way to kill the (presumably fictitious) creeps will be one of the challenges Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman (or their Build Team) put to the test in an upcoming zombie-themed episode.

The gang will even get some expert help with their zombie-sleuthing. EW also confirms that Michael Rooker, who plays Daryl's mono-handed big brother, Merle, on "The Walking Dead," will make an appearance.

Joining Rooker and the "MythBusters" regulars will be a whole lot of extras. On Jan. 18, the show's official Twitter account posted a call for hundreds of zombie wannabes over the age of 18 to film some time in "late Jan/Feb" in the San Francisco Bay area.

No word yet on exactly when the episode will air, but it will be part of the next season of the "MythBusters" -- along with the highly-anticipated "Breaking Bad" episode -- which returns in the spring.

'MythBusters' to test the science behind 'Breaking Bad'

    Frank Ockenfels / AMC

Aaron Paul as Jesse Pinkman and Bryan Cranston as Walter White on AMC's "Breaking Bad."

    By Ree Hines, TODAY contributor

On "Breaking Bad," Walter White and his cohort in crime, Jesse Pinkman, sure seem to know what they're doing. In fact, the drama's Emmy-winning star Bryan Cranston recently revealed that, when it comes to cooking up fake meth, he's a trained pro.

But what about the rest of the small-screen action on the show? Who knows just how realistic some of those crime-related capers are?

The guys over on Discovery's "MythBusters" know, or at least they will soon.

“We’ve been wanting to do a 'Breaking Bad' episode for a while,” Adam Savage recently told Entertainment Weekly. “Obviously there’s a lot of fertile material to play with, so things that happen on the show have been ending up on our list of stories to tackle for a couple years now. And when (show creator) Vince (Gilligan) said in an interview that he’d love to see a 'MythBusters'/'Breaking Bad' crossover, we reached out to him directly and the response was overwhelming positive.”

So positive that Gilligan plans to appear on the show himself, alongside Cranston's co-star Aaron Paul.

According to EW, among the "Bad" experiments 'busters Savage and Jamie Hyneman have planned is a test to find out the affects of hydrofluoric acid on a bathtub (which didn't turn out too well for Jesse, his house and a certain corpse in season one of "Breaking Bad").

"MythBusters" viewers will have to wait until the spring to find out how the tests go. But they'll have to wait only until Sunday night for the next episode of the series -- featuring San Francisco Giants pitcher Matt Cain.

Cain will work with the Build Team -- Kari Byron, Tory Belleci and Grant Imahara -- to test out his "cannon arm" and more.

Catch Cain's episode Nov. 4 at 8 p.m. on Discovery.

'MythBusters' examines the creepy sounds behind ghosts

    Discovery Channel

"MythBusters" host Adam Savage dressed as a cabin caretaker for the Halloween episode.

    By Anna Chan, TODAY

With Halloween just a few days away, it's time for the creepy and the crawly to emerge. Indeed, some believe that this time of the year is when the spirits of the dearly departed may return to the land of the living. Could that be the cause of unexplained chills or hairs standing on the back of your neck when you're in what may be a haunted home? Or is there something else going on?

"MythBusters" to the rescue! The show, which is airing its first ever Halloween special on Sunday, explores whether something as simple as an inaudible sound -- to the human ear, that is -- can convince unsuspecting folks of paranormal activities.

In an exclusive clip that Discovery is sharing with The Clicker, "MythBusters" hosts Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman set out to learn just that. The pair sets up four identical cabins, with one containing human-made, non-spooky speakers that emit the subaudible frequency that may -- or may not -- lead to the belief that the said structure is haunted.

And to get the unsuspecting subjects into the mood, Adam dresses up as a spooky groundskeeper. Check it out:

The "Fright Night" episode of "MythBusters" will also investigate the myth -- perpetrated by movies -- that moving dead bodies is easy. Another area of exploration will be whether there really is such a thing as "the smell of fear."

Exclusive peek: 'Mythbusters' take on 'Titanic' test to see if Jack could have survived

    Discovery

    By Ree Hines, TODAY contributor

Ever since the saddest scene from "Titanic" first played on the big screen, fans have wondered: Did Jack really have to die?

It just didn't seem fair. Rose bobbed along the icy waters safe and sound on that roomy white-oak plank, while her true love from the lower decks eventually sank to his watery grave.

Well, according to the logic used in the film -- and the excuse often presented by the film's creator James Cameron -- there's just no way the makeshift raft would have supported both of them. Rose would have gone the way of Jack if they'd even attempted to share the wood.

At least that's the theory. And it's one that's been tested by faithful fans -- with mixed results. But a bigger, better test is now on the way.

On the upcoming season premiere of "Mythbusters," Cameron joins 'busters Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman to put an end to the debate.

In the following exclusive sneak peek, Savage explains how they'll first tackle the myth in miniature.

"I'm going to start by playing with dolls," he told Cameron. "I'm going to make very accurate dolls of Rose and Jack -- accurate in terms of size but also their weight. And then I'm going to put them on a piece of wood that's exactly the same type of wood as the original."

From there, it's just a matter of putting that into a tub filled with salty water and wait to see what happens.

Oh, and as an optimistic Cameron added, "Prove my movie was right."

Film fans will have to wait for the season premiere of "Mythbusters" to find out if that's the case. It airs Oct. 7 at 8 p.m. on Discovery.

Do you think the "Mythbusters" team will prove the movie right? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.

Is 'Mythbusters' taking on the Jack/Rose survival struggle from 'Titanic'?

    Discovery Channel

    "Mythbusters."

By Seth Abramovitch , The Hollywood Reporter

Shortly after the April 2012 release of "Titanic 3D," a small Internet movement arose questioning why Kate Winslet's Rose did not allow Leonardo DiCaprio's Jack to share the plank she used as a life raft -- fating him to a sure death in the frigid arctic waters where ship met iceberg.

A widely-circulated photograph even illustrated just how much spare room was on the plank -- enough for two people to engage in a game of Go Fish, for example.

Director James Cameron is aware of the debate, as he reveals in a recent interview with IGN. He's ready to clear Rose's good name, and will team up with the mighty debunkers of Discovery's "MythBusters" to do it.

    Watch on YouTube

“It’s interesting,” Cameron says, “cause I think 'MythBusters' is gonna tackle this problem, and I’m gonna help them do it, actually. We’re gonna put it to rest.”

Cameron then explains something that many of the pro-Rosers have been arguing all along: that the size of the plank had nothing to do with it.

"Actually, it's not a question of room, it's a question of buoyancy," Cameron explains. "When Jack puts Rose on the raft, then he tries to get on the raft. He's not an idiot, he doesn't want to die. And the raft sinks and kind of flips. So it's clear that there's only enough buoyancy available for one person. So he makes a decision to let her be that person instead of taking them both down."

"If you know anything about hypothermia, the more you're submerged -- and she's completely out of the water on the raft, and it's only about that far above the surface. If they he had gotten on with her they both would have been half in and half out of the water, even if they could balance on it, and they would have both died," Cameron says. (The exchange begins at 4:20 in the first video. The second video features the Titanic scene in question.)
