Rock legends Roger Waters, Bruce Springsteen and more perform at the Sandy benefit show

    By Anna Chan, TODAY

Updated at 1:25 a.m. ET: Rock legends ranging from Roger Waters to The Rolling Stones to Paul McCartney with Nirvana joined together Wednesday night for a massive six-hour concert to raise money for the Robin Hood Relief Fund benefiting victims of superstorm Sandy.

The musicians set a serious tone, wearing mostly black and gray onstage as they encouraged people to call and donate money to help those affected by the devastating storm that killed at least 140 people and destroyed or damaged homes and properties in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and other areas.

Alicia Keys, who grew up in Manhattan's Hell's Kitchen, closed the show with her New York anthem "Empire State of Mind," as doctors, nurses, firefighters, police officers and others joined the piano-playing singer onstage. They ended the night chanting "U.S.A."

Keys was one of two women who performed at "The Concert for Sandy Relief." Diana Krall backed McCartney, who sang his solo songs, Beatles songs and played the role of Kurt Cobain with Nirvana members Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear.

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street band kicked off the concert with "Land of Hope and Dreams," and followed it up with "Wrecking Ball."

"Tonight, this is a prayer for all of our struggling brothers and sisters," Springsteen said. After performing a third song, the rocker brought out Jon Bon Jovi, and the pair sang "Born to Run" together.

"I can't believe that Bruce Springsteen is my opening act," Billy Crystal joked after the set. "You can feel the electricity in the building, which means Long Island Power isn't involved." He also reminded viewers about the devastation the storm left behind. "More than 100 people died ... entire neighborhoods wiped out. ... Tonight with your help, we are going to emerge stronger than before."

Pink Floyd's Roger Waters, who recently toured with his show "Roger Waters The Wall Live," performed "In the Flesh" and "Another Brick in the Wall" from the band's classic album. He then launched into "Money" and "Us and Them" from "Dark Side of the Moon."

Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder then joined the group for "Comfortably Numb," taking turns on the lyrics with Waters.

Roger Waters performed songs from "The Wall" and "Dark Side of the Moon."

Adam Sandler then took the stage with Paul Shaffer on piano for a little fun, with the comedian tweaking the lyrics to "Hallelujah" to suit the evening. "Hallelujah, Sandy screw ya! We'll get through you, 'cause we're New Yorkers!" the duo sang.

During the show, celebrities -- including Susan Sarandon, Ben Stiller and Jake Gyllenhaal -- manned the phone bank to handle call-in donations. There were so many stars there to help, "You can't swing a dead cat without hitting a celebrity," Brian Williams joked during the concert.

"Twilight" star Kristen Stewart also made an appearance to urge viewers to donate. She reminded the audience of the massive amount of damage that the storm left behind. "Now is your chance to be Jersey Strong with us," she said before introducing Bon Jovi's performance. The Jersey native kicked off his set with "It's My Life."

"When this storm hit, we all knew that the healing process would be beginning, but that it was going to take a long time," the rocker said. "(The performers) knew the people we were doing it for wouldn't be able to hear us, to see us. ... This recovery is not going to be quick. ... But we are strong. We are New York. We are New Jersey."

Jon Bon Jovi performed "Livin' on a Prayer" and other hits during his set.

Eric Clapton also delivered an energetic set of his own that included "Nobody Knows When You're Down and Out" and "Crossroad Blues."

He was followed by The Rolling Stones, who were introduced by Jimmy Fallon. Frontman Mick Jagger encouraged the crowd to dance and cheer as the band launched into "You Got Me Rocking" and the singer showed off his own slinky moves.

"This has got to be the largest collection of old English musicians ever assembled in Madison Square Garden," Jagger later joked of the night's lineup.

Ronnie Wood, Mick Jagger and Charlie Watts of The Rolling Stones perform.

Comedian Stephen Colbert also added to the humor. He said that when Sir Paul McCartney asked him for advice on being cool, he told the musician to lose the hair cut and the accent. Colbert then pointed out that helping is also cool. So cool, in fact, that it's like "doing a line of uncut goodwill" and that donating "is the new skinny jeans."

New Yorker Alicia Keys later delivered an emotion-packed performance, first with new tune "Brand New Me" then "No One." After the two-song set, she said, "My city, New York City, is the most resilient city."

After the slower set, The Who kicked things back into high gear with an energetic performance of "Who Are You?" during which singer Roger Daltrey seemingly dropped an F-bomb. While performing "Bell Boy," the band showed video of drummer Keith Moon, who died in 1978. Images and videos switched to those of the storm's destruction during "See Me, Feel Me." They ended their long set with "Tea and Theater" and a loud expletive for beer instead.

Like Colbert earlier, comedian Chris Rock used his humor to urge viewers to donate what they could. "We have raised so much money tonight, the shift's over! We fixed everything! Jersey's fixed, Staten Island, it's all like Beverly Hills right now!" he joked. "Now please go online and donate! One hundred percent of the money raised tonight will go to me! No, to the Robin Hood Relief Fund."

He then introduced the "always humble" Kanye West, who performed "Mercy," "Jesus Walks," "Diamonds Are Forever," "Gold Digger" (a seemingly odd song choice, considering the purpose of the concert) and more.

Kanye was followed by Billy Joel, who started his set with "Miami 2017." The Piano Man had also performed the tune at a benefit concert for the Sept. 11 attacks and an earlier Hurricane Sandy show. His performance also included "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," "New York State of Mind," "River of Dreams," "You May Be Right" and closed with "Only the Good Die Young."

Chris Martin of Coldplay was then introduced by actress Blake Lively. The rocker appeared on stage alone with just a guitar in his hands to perform the hit song "When I Ruled the World."

"I'm so grateful to be here. ... I know you really wanted One Direction, but it's way past their bedtime, so you get one quarter of Coldplay," Martin joked. "I tried to get the guy from 'Gangnam Style,' he wasn't available." Instead, R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe appeared and the pair did a duet of the hit "Losing My Religion." According to Brian Williams, Stipe was a surprise performer, even to those who planned the show.

Quentin Tarantino, Jamie Foxx and Christoph Waltz introduced Sir Paul McCartney.

"I love New York!" the former Beatle declared before kicking off the band's rocking tune "Helter Skelter," followed by "Let Me Roll It," "Nineteen Hundred and Eighty-Five," "My Valentine" and "Blackbird."

"So recently some guys asked me to go jam with them," McCartney said. "So I showed up, ready to jam, and in the middle of it, these guys said, 'Well, we haven't played together in years, you know?' ... I finally understood I was in the middle of the Nirvana reunion!"

The Beatle then jammed with Nirvana's Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear to a new rock tune. Afterward, he took on the Fab Four's "I've Got a Feeling" and followed up with a firework-infused performance of Wings' "Live and Let Die."

McCartney ended his set by asking "the heroes of Hurricane Sandy" on stage and shaking their hands. He then brought Keys back to wrap up the show with her anthem to the city, "Empire State of Mind."

"Dedicated to all the heroes in New York and beyond," the songstress said in closing.

The show, which started at 7:30 p.m. ET at New York's Madison Square Garden, was broadcast live on 37 television stations in the United States and more than 200 others worldwide. It was to be streamed on 30 websites.

Courtney Love: No Nirvana musical is in the works, despite rumors

    By Rolling Stone

    Courtney Love.

Courtney Love has shot down rumors of a Nirvana musical, according to The Observer. Addressing murmurs that Love's sometime co-manager Sam Lufti -- who recently had his lawsuit against Britney Spears thrown out due to insufficient evidence -- would be leading the musical with her blessing, Love made clear that won't be happening. "There will be no musical," said the rocker. "Sometimes it's best just to leave things alone."

Nirvana's smashed "Smells Like Teen Spirit" bass up for auction

Though Love has been talking to director Brett Morgan about a possible film about her life since Kurt Cobain, she's taking a hard stance against the commercial use of Nirvana's work and legacy. "I said yes once -- to Baz Luhrmann to use eight seconds of 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' in 'Moulin Rouge,'" said Love. "But he wasn't allowed to use it in the marketing. I didn't get the part in the film. I was so pissed off I made up the term to 'Baz' somebody."

The singer, who had daughter Frances Bean with Cobain, has vowed to keep as much control as she can over her late husband's work.

"I got so bullied into selling what I sold. I regret it so much. I'm never selling the rest of it," she said.

Nirvana bass smashed in video could fetch $40,000

    By Rolling Stone

The bass that Krist Novoselic played and Kurt Cobain smashed in the video for Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" will be up for auction by Christie's in London on Nov. 29.

    Watch on YouTube

The seller of the 1960s Japanese Zen-On bass was a teenager at the time of the video's shoot; he had applied to be an extra, and grabbed the bass from the set.

Knowing the bass would be destroyed, Novoselic sought an inexpensive piece of gear, and purchased the bass at a local pawn shop. The instrument is expected to fetch between $24,000 and more than $40,000.

'Big Bang Theory' writer developing 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' TV show

    By Anna Chan, TODAY

Teen rebellion is coming to television, though it may not be quite how Nirvana might have imagined it.

The Hollywood Reporter is exclusively reporting that Dave Goetsch, the writer and executive producer of "The Big Bang Theory," has sold a sitcom titled "Smells Like Teen Spirit" -- the 1991 hit that launched the grunge band to stardom -- to CBS, which is also the home to "BBT." According to THR, "Teen Spirit" is a family comedy about an 18-year-old who gives up going to Harvard to kick off an Internet company in his '90s indie-rock parents' garage. Like with "Big Bang," Goetsch will perform writing and producing duties.

Kurt Cobain's widow, Courtney Love, did not have a comment about the series, and Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl has not yet responded to a request for comment.

'Melvan' covered in Kurt Cobain's graffiti goes up for auction again

    ebay.com

The "Melvan," which is up for auction.

    By Greg Prato, Rolling Stone

In case you've been kicking yourself for not bidding on the "Melvan" the first time around, you're in luck -- you now have a second chance to bid on this historical grunge artifact through eBay.

Back in March of this year, the vehicle (a beat-up 1972 Dodge Sportsman Royal Van, featuring artwork by Kurt Cobain) reached a bid of $99,999.99 on eBay. However, its reserve wasn't met, and some also questioned the authenticity of Cobain's artwork.

This time the van's owner, Ben Berg, who plays bass in the group Weird Beast, has all the bases covered.

Melvins Roar Back With Two New Releases

"The Melvan is going back up on eBay for a 10-day, no reserve auction," Berg told Rolling Stone. "Highest bidder gets it. I finally acquired written statements from Matt Lukin and Steve Shillinger authenticating the artwork. That was sort of a big issue the first go-round with serious collectors."

While Lukin's name should be familiar to grunge scholars (he was the Melvins' original bassist and, later, Mudhoney's original bassist), Berg filled us in on this Steve Shillinger gentleman.

Photos: A Look Inside the Kurt Cobain-Decorated Melvins Van

"Kurt used to live on Steve's parents' couch off and on when Kurt still lived on the harbor. Steve was very close with the Melvins, too. I believe he has been either mentioned and/or interviewed in several books concerning the early days of Nirvana. He still has a bunch of old home movies that he and Kurt made together when they were in their late teens, early 20s."

It's the doodle by onetime Melvins roadie Cobain -- a replication of the front cover of KISS' classic 1974 debut -- that makes this jalopy truly unique. The Melvan currently calls Montesano, Washington, its home; it is available for local pick-up for the winning bidder. Bidding for the Melvan's second listing will end this Sunday, shortly after 3 p.m. PDT.

Courtney Love lets Lana Del Rey know 'Heart-Shaped Box' is about her vagina

    By Rolling Stone

Last week in Sydney, Australia, Lana Del Rey gave a delicate rendition of Nirvana's 1993 hit "Heart-Shaped Box," stripping the track of Kurt Cobain's grit in favor of a lighter version. Monday, Courtney Love reached out to Del Rey on Twitter to give her an unsolicited rock history lesson. Though the tweets have since been deleted, Stereogum took a few screenshots before their removal.

"You do know the song is about my Vagina right? 'Throw down your umbilical noose so i can climb right back,' umm," wrote Love to Del Rey. "On top of which some of the lyrics about my vagina I contributed. So umm next time you sing it, think about my vagina will you?"

Earlier this month, Love was hit with a lawsuit from a former assistant over "despicable conduct." It followed reports from last month revealing she had also been sued by her former lawyers over unpaid legal bills.

    By Natalie Finn, E! Online

Shocker alert: It's possible that working for Courtney Love is no picnic.

The predictably unpredictable Hole frontwoman was sued Wednesday by a former assistant who claims that, during the year she worked for Love, the singer "acted with an improper and evil motive amounting to malice or despicable conduct."

Evil seems like a strong word....

According to the lawsuit obtained by E! News, plaintiff Jessica Labrie was hired by Love in June 2010 as an administrative assistant and "forensic research aide" for $30 an hour -- and it was downhill from there.

Among Labrie's allegations against the "Pretty on the Inside" artist, per the complaint: Love had her working 60-hour-plus weeks without paying overtime, she asked her to hire a computer hacker, she directed her to send fake legal correspondence, she never followed up with a promise to pay for Labrie's Yale tuition, she never paid her any promised bonuses and she didn't secure her a promised job on the set of a Nirvana biopic.

    The list goes on.

Labrie also states that, in addition to repeatedly asking for the money she was owed, she had voiced concerns to Love about the ethical and legal implications of the questionable things the artist allegedly asked her to do.

A rep for Love hasn't yet commented on the suit and its singular laundry list of accusations.

On Jun 27, 2011, the suit continues, Labrie was forced to resign with Love still owing her more than $2,000.

The plaintiff says the situation caused her headaches, insomnia, anxiety and depression. She is seeking unspecified damages for alleged wrongful termination, failure to pay wages and overtime, negligent misrepresentation, breach of contract and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

Courtney Love: Dave Grohl hit on my teen daughter, is 'sexually obsessed' with Kurt

    Jemal Countess / Getty Images

    Courtney Love in 2011.

    By Rolling Stone

Courtney Love has accused Dave Grohl of attempting to seduce her 19-year-old daughter, Frances Bean Cobain, Gawker reports. The Hole singer made the accusations on her private Twitter account last night, claiming that her estranged daughter's roommate informed her that the Foo Fighters frontman "hit on Frances." Grohl is, of course, the former bandmate of Frances' father, Kurt Cobain, and has known her since she was an infant.

    Follow @ msnbc_ent

In a series of subsequent tweets, Love threatened Grohl and speculated on his "pathology," noting that Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins resembles Cobain and is in the "submissive drummer position" in the band, and that he named his daughter Violet, which happens to be the name of one of Love's biggest hits. She later declared that Grohl is "sexually obsessed" with Kurt, relaying information from a driver who claimed that Grohl had "his hands all over" Frances in his car.

This is hardly the first time Love has attacked Grohl in public. Back in November, the singer launched into a tirade against him at a festival in Brazil prompted by her outrage at a fan carrying a poster of Cobain in the audience.

Love's private Twitter account, @cbabymichelle, is locked from the public, but Gawker has posted a screen capture collecting all of her tweets from last night.
