Harry Styles' shoe tosser apologizes for hitting him at One Direction concert

By Alexis L. Loinaz, E! Online

The sole culprit behind Harry Styles' shoe shenanigan is making amends. A Twitter user by the name of Jade Anderson has taken responsibility for clocking him in the groin when she threw her shoe onstage at a One Direction show Tuesday in Glasgow, and she's now apologizing to the boy bander for the ballsy move.

The 14-year-old, who hails from Scotland's East Kilbride town, took to Twitter shortly after the incident, writing, "tonight i threw my shoe and it hit harry in the balls then security came and took me out the concert then i got my shoe back hahahaha."

Ouch! Harry Styles hit in the groin by fan-flung shoe at One Direction show

She apparently didn't stay booted out of the show for long: Apparently, security later allowed her to return to the concert.

"The only reason the security let me back in is cos harry told them too," she said.

Anderson then apologized directly to the 19-year-old singer. "@harry_styles im the one that threw my shoe at you, i never meant to hurt you :-(," she wrote, adding, "Feel sooo ill now."

She also tried to make light of the situation, noting, "and the police were telling me that i 'commited a criminal assult' and i couldve killed him hahaha."

Well, her aim was at least good enough to literally bowl him over: After getting hit, Styles immediately keeled over in pain and curled up on the stage floor while cupping his crotch.

But proving that you can't keep a good man down for long, Styles quickly rebounded, got up and jokingly started doing some lunges.

    Nice recovery there!

'Downton Abbey' covers One Direction in mash-up

    By Drusilla Moorhouse, TODAY contributor

"Downton Abbey" lights up our world like nobody else -- especially when the cast covers One Direction.

In a cheeky video mash-up from comedian Richard Sandling, our favorite British aristocrats and servants "sing" the lyrics to the boy band's "What Makes You Beautiful."

    Watch on YouTube

The hilarious cover includes dialogue from all three seasons of the hit period drama -- including the recent heartbreaking finale -- taking only a few liberties with the lyrics.

Twitter Follow The Clicker on Twitter

Twitter Follow Drusilla Moorhouse on Twitter

Instead of "The way that you flip your hair gets me overwhelmed," for instance, the Grantham family (including Lady Violet!) intone, "The way that you do your hair gets me flabbergasted."

And Harry Styles & Co.'s "na na na" lyrics are replaced with a chorus of "ma-mah" and "pa-paw," the affectionately formal way Mary and her sisters address of their parents.

The video is a perfect encore to Sandling's viral mash-up of the "Mad Men" cast performing Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up."

If One Direction is inclined to offer a rebuttal, may we suggest they perform a scene from "Downton"? Admit it: Harry Styles and Niall Horan would make a lovely Mary and Matthew.

Do you think the "Downton" send-off is beautiful? Tell us on our Facebook page!

One Direction gets Bad Lip Reading treatment in 'Shadow Pico'

    By Kurt Schlosser, TODAY

The pros at Bad Lip Reading have set their sights on the boys of One Direction and made them the stars of a spoof foreign language film called "Shadow Pico."

    Watch on YouTube

Set to the visuals of the British band's video for "Gotta Be You," "Pico" dubs phony languages over the top for a dramatic art-house feel.

"They've captivated the world with their music," the intro says. "Now experience One Direction as you've never seen them before. In their first foreign language motion picture." And then, instead of bubbly lyrics about girls and bro-bonding, the gibberish begins.

Turning on the video's closed captioning makes the entire effort all the better, especially when "Ooh, ooh, ooh" is translated as "Ooh, ooh, ooh."

With 82 million views, the real music video is in no danger (yet) of being eclipsed by the spoof's 29,000 views. But Bad Lip Reading does attract a lot of eyes -- this classic "Twilight" spoof has 16 million views.

Pop music mashup puts fresh spin on 2012's overplayed hits

    By Kurt Schlosser, NBC News

If you spent a lot of time and money listening to and accumulating the year's hottest pop hits, a new video mashup might make you wonder if it was all worth it. Sigh. Oh, sorry. Meant to say PSY.

    Watch on YouTube

We're not saying that because the crop of music in 2012 was particularly bad. (Someone is no doubt saying that, probably very loudly, but it's not us). We're just saying that when cobbled together into one 8-minute superhit, the year's music all sounds pretty much the same. You could have waited for this one song.

"Pop Danthology 2012" by Daniel kimaginati0n Kim features more than 50 songs and their accompanying video clips. Adele, Chris Brown, Rihanna, Katy Perry, One Direction, Ke$ha, Flo Rida, Kelly Clarkson, Maroon 5, Pink, Justin Bieber and PSY are some of those who made the cut.

    Follow @ NBCNewsEnt

How many times did you hear "Gangnam Style" or "Call Me Maybe" or "Somebody That I Used To Know" this year? Taken on their own, none of those songs really deserves another click. Mashed with the same-sounding hooks and Auto-Tuned vocals of Usher or Christina Aguilera or Jennifer Lopez or whomever, the new song/video becomes oddly entrancing. You might find this treatment helps make a lot of these songs fresh and enjoyable again.

If 8 minutes of dance pop was a walk in the park for your ears, maybe you're game for trying 11 hours worth of music on for size. BuzzFeed mines different genres for its Ultimate 2012 Playlist. "There's enough variety here that pretty much anyone is bound to run into a lot of stuff they either haven't heard, or perhaps had dismissed in some way," the site says. Start listening ...

One Direction announces a new direction -- a 3D movie

    By Ree Hines, TODAY contributor

One Direction mania hit Rockefeller Plaza Tuesday morning as fans gathered to see the blockbuster boy band on TODAY.

Fresh off the release of their latest studio album, "Take Me Home," Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, and Louis Tomlinson performed several of their hits, including their chart-topping earworm, "What Makes You Beautiful," and the first single off the new album, "Live While We're Young."

"For us, it's unbelievable to see this kind of support," Harry said.

In fact, they hope their fans consider their new release as a sort of compensation for that support.

"We waited a long time to get an album out for the fans, and they deserve it," Liam said. "They've worked so hard for us over the last year and a half."

But the guys did more than just perform and thank the screaming crowd -- they also had a big announcement to make.

"We are going to do our first ever movie," Niall revealed. "It's going to be in 3D, and it's coming to cinemas near you on (Aug. 30) 2013."

UK boy band One Direction big winner at MTV Video Music Awards

    By Jill Serjeant, Reuters

LOS ANGELES -- British boy band One Direction were the big winners at the MTV Video Music Awards on Thursday, edging out Rihanna and taking home three prizes to crown their arrival on the U.S. pop scene just six months ago.

Members of the British band One Direction, from left, Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, Zayn Malik and Niall Horan pose backstage with their awards at the MTV Video Music Awards on Thursday.

The five baby-faced guys, contestants on the British version of TV singing contest "The X Factor," beat Justin Bieber and Rihanna for best pop video, and fellow all-boy British outfit The Wanted as best new artists.

They also won the most-shareworthy video award for their debut hit single "What Makes You Beautiful" and later performed single "One Thing" to hordes of screaming girls at the two-hour Los Angeles ceremony.

"To win one Moonman is amazing, to win two is incredible," said Harry Styles, as the band collected the silver VMA trophy for best new artists.

TODAY video: One Direction: We don't follow stereotypes

"Thank you so much! We have grown up watching this show and to collect one of these straight away is incredible," said a jubilant Niall Horan.

Rihanna, who went into the VMA's sharing a leading five nominations with Canadian rapper Drake, came away with just one award.

But it was the most coveted award of the night - video of the year - and the Barbados-born superstar won it for her dizzying visual romp in hit single "We Found Love."

"I love you guys! This is awesome," Rihanna told her fans as she collected the Moonman trophy and showed off a new pixie hair cut.

In a hip-hop-heavy show, rapper Nicki Minaj won best female video for "Starships," while Chris Brown won two awards - best male video and best choreography for "Turn Up the Music."

Drake also came away with just one win, for his hip-hop video "HYFR," which celebrates his Jewish heritage. "I want to dedicate this award to any kid who has had a long walk home," Drake said.

TODAY video: Is boy band One Direction the next Beatles?

The VMA's have become known as one of the more unpredictable and controversial award shows, but Thursday's ceremony had none of the jaw-dropping moments - like the steamy 2003 Madonna/Britney Spears kiss - that have marked previous years.

This year, U.S. Olympic gymnastics champion Gabby Douglas, 16, back-flipped and leapt across the stage while Alicia Keys sang her new single "Girl On Fire." Douglas and her four fellow teammates also introduced Keys.

Punk rocker Billie Joe Armstrong seemed fully recovered from a weekend dehydration episode that forced Green Day to cancel a performance in Italy, and he was mobbed on Thursday while singing after inviting fans to come up on stage.

Lil Wayne gave the first televised performance of his new single "No Worries," and Frank Ocean, who made headlines in July by coming out as a rare gay hip-hop artist, performed an emotional version of "Thinkin Bout You."

Calvin Harris was the winner of the VMA's first award in the increasingly popular electronic dance music category for "Feel So Close."

Country-pop crossover singer Taylor Swift closed the show with her best-selling single "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" and other performers included Pink, Minaj, and Rihanna.

One Direction singer Zayn Malik: Global pop star, and Muslim

    Neilson Barnard/Getty Images

Zayn Malik of the band One Direction performs at the Beacon Theatre in New York City on May 26 during a U.S. concert tour.

    By Kari Huus, msnbc.com

As the British-Irish boy band One Direction soared in the pop charts, making teen and tween girls around the world swoon and scream, band member Zayn Malik tweeted a message that would perplex a large segment of his fans, while being immediately recognizable to millions of others.

"La ila ha ill lalla ho muhammed door rasoolalah." The 47-character tweet is a common declaration of faith among Muslims: "There is no god but God and Mohammad is the prophet of God."

It was one signal from Malik that as part of his public persona he would embrace a religion that is often feared and reviled in the West, while otherwise acting the traditional teen idol alongside his four floppy-haired band mates in One Direction.

The phenomenon of Malik as global pop star and Muslim — the religion of his Pakistan-born father — is likely to alienate some conservative Muslims and has already sparked the wrath of at least one well known anti-Muslim conservative in the U.S., where the band is currently touring.

But to Wajahat Ali, a San Francisco-based screen writer who is a practicing Muslim, Malik represents progress.

"It is empowering for Muslims worldwide to see the success of a pop star who also happens to be Muslim. It sends that message that a person can be respected for their talent, and their "Musliminess" will not exclude them from the public arena and culture," said Ali. "It’s also good business. You have a Muslim in a five-person boy band… and you have captured an audience of Muslim girls worldwide."

    $50 million business
One Direction is a creation of Simon Cowell, TV producer and famously blunt judge on "X-Factor" and "American Idol." to In 2010 Cowell pulled together the five boys — then 16 to 18 years old — to compete as a band on "X-Factor" after each had auditioned as soloists on the show. He later signed them on his Syco Records label.

In a blinding rise to global stardom, One Direction’s first album, "Up All Night,” became wildly popular in the UK in 2011, and debuted at No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard 200 in 2012, launching the top 10 singles "What Makes You Beautiful," "Gotta Be You," and "One Thing."

As of June, the album had sold 2.3 million copies worldwide, and the band has become a $50 million business, CEO of Sony Music UK Nick Gatfield told MusicWeek.com, a British record industry publication.

TODAY's Jenna Bush Hager talks with heartthrob boy band One Direction, who reveal what it's like being a pop sensation and how they deal with fame and giggling girls.

One Direction is the latest in a well-established tradition of boy bands that goes back to Ricky Nelson, and the Everly Brothers in the 1950s, and continued through the Osmond Brothers, the Jackson Five, through the Backstreet boys, Spice Girls (same idea, different gender) and N’Sync.

"The whole movement… was created and geared to selling records to teenagers," said John Covach, a music historian and professor of music theory at the University of Rochester in New York. He said even the Beatles started out as a boy band. "They were good looking and funny. And they were marketed at first as teen idols."

Covach compares the One Direction video of "What makes you Beautiful" — depicting a zany seaside frolick — to the 1964 film based on the Beatle's "A Hard Day's Night."

Zealous fans — who call themselves "Directioners" — home in on their favorite band members who in turn cultivate their fan base minute by minute via social media, especially Twitter.

    Valuable toast and glorious eyelashes
Louis Tomlinson is the funny one.

Liam Payne is seen the father figure on the band, and sometimes referred to as "Daddy Directioner."

Harry Styles, 18, with a head of curly brown hair and dimples is generally regarded as "cutest" — and known for allegedly dating a couple of much older women.

Niall Horan, a blond 19-year-old from Ireland, got worldwide coverage when, after tasting vegemite spread during an appearance on Australian TV, the uneaten portion of the toast was auctioned on eBay to raise money for charity — reportedly fetching $100,000. He tweeted to his 2.5 million followers that vegemite was not to his liking.

For Malik, being Muslim is not his only distinction. In chat rooms he is adored for his long dark eyelashes, and his rhythm-and-blues style.

But his occasional references to Islam is something new for a teen idol in the West and fans have taken note — though the band has barely hit the radar of most of their elders.

"You are amazing, and you act so normal, you don't fake anything and you speak what's on your mind. You are a guy that most girls want,” swooned fan Hana Fifaii, posting to Twitlonger on March 30. "I loved your tweet ‘Translation la ila ha ill lalla ho muhammed door rasoolalah’ ... It shows you're connected to your religion. You are a wonderful person and you are so God damn hot! My friend made fun of you & i practically killed her :$."

    /

Fans watch One Direction perform live on stage at St James Theatre on April 22 in Wellington, New Zealand.

In chat rooms, Muslim and non-Muslims engaged in spirited debates about Malik’s beliefs.

Karina Alifa: Can somebody tell me, is that true that Zayn Malik is Muslim?

    xavellene : Yeah he's Muslim.

Angel x:  Why everyone wants to know what his religion is? This is just so weird. Whatever he believes in, just let him be. Knowing his religion does not make any difference. The same goes with the question if he is gay. Please stop asking stupid questions.

Sabby:  it matters to muslim girls cuz we r muslim.. n we cant marry a non-muslim guy.. so am so proud he is muslim n he is keeping it up even thoh he grew up in UK! so am so proud and excited! … i guess u wont understand cuz ur not muslim.. so its like big thing for us!

Out in the twittersphere, kids in countries with large Muslim populations, including Egypt, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines, repeatedly urge Malik to visit during the Muslim celebration of Ramadan.

    Boy band jihad
Not all the responses were as positive.

As One Direction tours the United States, packing concert halls from San Francisco to Atlanta, one well-known American anti-Islam commentator warned readers to “keep your daughters away from Zayn Malik’s enticing jihad."

"He’s no dummy," wrote Debbie Schlussel in her blog on June 7. "(Malik) knows the power he has over these mindless girls and is using that influence to preach the Islamic faith to them and try to convert them. It’s dangerous."

Schlussel did not respond to the reporter’s request to discuss these comments further.

But Zudhi Jasser, an American Muslim who frequently warns of Islamic radicalization, didn’t agree that Malik was proselytizing or dangerous.

"I would say all the power to him to be respectful to his faith and be proud of it," said Jasser. He said the American Muslim culture needs more cultural icons who are American and Muslim, but not Islamist – like athletes Karim Abdul Jabbar and Mohammad Ali.

But he also notes that conservative Islamists would likely frown on many aspects of Malik’s behavior—his smoking, his tattoos (albeit written in Arabic), ear piercing, and song lyrics that — while saccharine — probably would not be seen to glorify God.

There are conservative Islamic countries where One Direction would not be allowed to perform -- and Malik might be the target of conservative clerics for his style of faith.

Ali, the screenwriter, said that even if more conservative Muslims don’t agree with Malik’s behavior, he could help expand the artistic boundaries for young Muslims.

"What we have seen in the last 10 years is that you can be an artist who is Muslim and can be practicing and doing art that is inspired by your beliefs, but does not have to be overtly Islamic or using religious language," he said. "A guy like Zayn Malik can really help open those minds and convey that as a generation we are moving ahead."
