Sean Penn's son Hopper slurs photographer in altercation

    By Randee Dawn, TODAY contributor

Sean Penn has never been a fan of the paparazzi, and based on an incident caught on tape Tuesday, neither is his 19-year-old son Hopper Penn.

    Zodiac / Splash News

Hopper Penn gets into an altercation with a photographer while visiting an office building with dad Sean Penn on Tuesday in Beverly Hills.

The younger Penn was following his father into a Beverly Hills building Tuesday when the incident occurred. Sean sauntered past the clicking photographers without a word or acknowledgment, but his son walked over from across the street and began engaging the photographers. Based on a video shot by one of the snappers, Hopper pushed past him (possibly making contact) and the two began engaging in a verbal altercation.

"What the hell?" the photographer who got pushed aside said.

"You f------ kidding me?" Hopper shot back, never pausing.

"You kidding me?" the photographer continued, following him into the building. "Don't play yourself. Don't ever do that, dude."

Hopper shot his middle finger in the air and the verbal parrying continued. But then it took a more aggressive turn, as Hopper's retreating figure first called the photographer a homosexual slur.

"That the kind of talk you're teaching him, Sean?" the photographer, undeterred, called down the emptying hallway.

Hopper's last riposte was to shoot back that the photographer, who was African-American, was a "f------ n-----."

"Oh, word?" the photographer, now outraged, called out.

Police showed up at the scene, according to E! Online, and the photographer is seen in another video showing officers footage on his camera. The photographer declined to press charges. No one was cited.

Hopper later issued a statement, saying, "I was accosted by paparazzi and made to feel like an animal -- threatened and under attack, but that does not condone my own actions. ... I deeply regret my choice of words."

Sean Penn's own altercations with the paparazzi have been well documented. Here's video from 2010 of the actor kicking a photographer. And here's a classic image from back in the Madonna days of Penn throwing a punch.

Russell Crowe has a wild 7-mile NYC bike chase with paparazzi

    By Peter Gicas, E! Online

Russell Crowe gave one paparazzo the ride of his life on Tuesday.

Determined to get the perfect shot of the Oscar winner as he biked through the streets of New York City, J.B. Nicholas hopped on his own two-wheeler and wound up pedaling 7.7 miles from Manhattan to Brooklyn.

"It all started at about 10:30 a.m. when I and five other shutterbugs waited outside a Tribeca hotel where Crowe is staying," Nicholas recalled in a story he wrote for the New York Daily News. "The double front doors of the hotel flew open and Crowe and his bodyguard dramatically shot out on a mountain bike and headed south on Greenwich St."

Nicholas went on to describe how he jumped on his bike and proceeded to pursue Crowe through Battery Park, past the Staten Island Ferry Terminal, under the FDR Drive and onto the Manhattan Bridge.

"I and five other two-wheeling cameramen followed, but most gave up from exhaustion," Nicolas wrote. "There were two of us left and Crowe's bodyguard was trying to block us."

The chase eventually came to an end at the South Williamsburg movie set where Crowe is shooting his upcoming film, "Noah."

"You missed the best shot; I just gave you the finger," Crowe playfully said to Nicholas as he made his way into his trailer.

Soon after, Crowe came out and, much to Nicholas' surprise, gave the guy a hug.

Later in the day, Crowe recalled the experience himself, tweeting :

"11.6km bike ride to work, meditative peace of the morning ritual decimated by paparazzi ... on bicycles ... Only in NY folks."

But he did note, "ride turned in to a bit of fun, certainly upped the speed, did the 11.6km in 30 mins, only 1 pap stayed on pace, I congratulated him."

Of course, this isn't the first time Crowe has gone pedal-to-pedal. In 2009, the "Gladiator" star challenged an Australian journalist to accompany him on one of his rides when she questioned the actor's workout regimen after photos appeared of him supplementing his regular 13-mile bike ride with smoke breaks and tacos.

Paparazzo charged for Justin Bieber car chase

    By Josh Grossberg, E! Online

There's a cure for Bieber Fever -- and it sounds very painful. A paparazzo who allegedly couldn't get enough of that Justin Bieber stuff is facing potential jail time after being targeted today by prosecutors in Los Angeles.

The Los Angeles City Attorney's Office confirms to E! News criminal charges have been filed against freelance photographer Paul Raef from a July 6 high-speed freeway chase that ended with Bieber getting a speeding ticket and the shutterbug seemingly getting away.

More from E! Online: Justin Bieber's alleged paparazzi chase -- City attorney's on the case!

City attorney spokesman Frank Mateljan tells E! News the 30-year-old photog faces four misdemeanor charges in all: following another vehicle too closely, reckless driving with the intent to capture pictures for commercial gain, reckless driving and failing to obey the lawful order of a peace officer.

Prosecutors weighed their decision in part on whether they believed Raef endangered lives during the pursuit.

According to Mateljan, the photog drove his Toyota Rav 4 in excess of 80 miles her hour while trying to keep up with the teen idol's Fisker Karma electric sports car. The chase involved both vehicles darting across all lanes of a freeway and even riding on the shoulder, which forced other motorists to brake or swerve to avoid collision. One of those motorists was Los Angeles City Councilman Dennis Zine, a former cop who was among those calling 911 during the pursuit.

"It was a very dangerous, chaotic situation," Zine said. "I was driving 60 to 65 miles per hour. When (Bieber) passed me, he was ... driving in a careless, reckless fashion."

More from E! Online: Justin Bieber busted in "chaotic, dangerous" speeding incident

California Highway Patrol eventually pulled Bieber over, cited him for speeding, and released the popster, but not before Raef sped off. About 30 minutes later, Justin called police to report he was being harassed on the interstate by the same Toyota. Officers eventually collared Raef after identifying his vehicle's license plate in a downtown L.A. parking garage.

If convicted, the paparazzo could face up to one year in the county jail and fines up to $3,500.

An attorney for Raef could not be reached for comment.
