Justin Timberlake bares his soul with Otis Redding cover at White House

    By Kurt Schlosser, TODAY

Justin Timberlake left his suit and tie on for a performance at the White House on Tuesday, but he wasn't singing his new hit single.

The pop star offered up a fine cover of Otis Redding's ("Sittin' On) the Dock of the Bay" as part of a tribute to Memphis soul music for the White House's continuing "In Performance" series.

President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama clearly enjoyed the rendition from the front row as they bobbed their heads and sang along with Timberlake.

"These songs get us on the dance floor," the president said. "They get stuck in our heads. We go back over them again and again. And they've played an important part in our history."

Singers Ben Harper, Mavis Staples, Sam Moore and Queen Latifah were among others who performed. The first lady also led a workshop for students to highlight the importance of Memphis music.

PBS will air a concert special from the event on April 16.

Jay-Z has '99 problems but Mitt ain't one' at Obama's Ohio rally

    By Kurt Schlosser, NBC News

Jay-Z joined President Barack Obama at a campaign rally in Columbus, Ohio, on Monday and offered a lyrical twist on his hip-hop hit, "99 Problems."

    Watch on YouTube

The rapper subbed "Mitt" for "a b--ch" in the song, singing, "I got 99 problems but Mitt ain't one" in a nod to Obama's Republican challenger, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney.

"I didn't get that vetted, so let's do this real fast before they come up here and snatch me off this stage," Jay-Z says to the cheering crowd.

Bruce Springsteen also rallied with Obama a day ahead of Tuesday's election. The rocker performed in Madison, Wisc.

Romney was on a four-state tour through Florida, Virginia, Ohio and New Hampshire.

Chris Rock pitches Obama as a white president white voters can trust

    By Jefferson Reid, E! Online

It's high time we Chris Rock the vote, which is exactly what happened Friday night on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" when the politically savvy comic made the case that "Barack Obama is the white president you can trust."

It sounds counterintuitive, we know, but check out the huge pool of supporting data Rock has amassed.

Consider that Obama was raised by his blindingly white grandparents, likes to golf, bowl and body surf and that his casual fashion choices tend to favor polo shirts and mom jeans. Not to mention awkwardly dancing on "Ellen." We have to agree, that is pretty darned white!

The absolute crusher? Rock reminds us that for much of his life, Barack was known as Barry, which is "the third whitest name on Earth."

Katy Perry sings at Obama rally wearing voting ballot-inspired dress

After a multistate tour on Wednesday, President Barack Obama wrapped up his day with a late-evening campaign rally headlined by singer Katy Perry at a park in Las Vegas.

Perry, wearing a dress that looked like a giant ballot, warmed up the crowd as the president traveled from Los Angeles to Las Vegas for the free gathering, which drew more about 13,000 people. The singer performed "Let's Stay Together," "Part of Me," "Teenage Dream," "Wide Awake" and "Firework."

Air Force One touched down a little after 9 p.m.

"The motorcade sped on a highway and arrived at Doolittle Park, a site in a largely African-American section of town," according to the pool report. "There, a large and enthusiastic crowd awaited him. An Obama 'Forward!' sign stood at the top of the stands behind the stage where Obama spoke. To the side giant white letters spelling 'Vote Early' stood atop the stands to the side of the stage."

Obama's Las Vegas speech mirrored the ones he delivered earlier in Davenport and Denver -- but with one major exception. Perry's 91-year-old grandmother was there and gave the president a kiss on the cheek, leaving a lipstick mark on his face. He joked that he had to wipe it off before First Lady Michelle Obama saw it.

"He told the crowd about being in the midst of a marathon tour and ticked off all the stops," according to the pool report. "He said he was pulling an all-nighter, adding that if you're not going to sleep, 'You might as well be in Vegas.'"

The event took place not long after Obama taped an appearance on "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno," where he blasted Republican Senate candidate Richard Mourdock's rape comments and poked fun at Donald Trump.

President Obama offers parenting advice to Jay-Z

    By Rolling Stone

President Barack Obama told Cleveland radio station Z107.9 this week that he's offered a few tips to new dad Jay-Z about riasing daughter Ivy Blue with Beyoncé.

"I've gotten to know these guys over the last several years ... They're good people. Beyoncé could not be sweeter to Michelle and the girls. ... So they're good friends," the president says around the 6:33 mark of the clip. "They really are down-to-earth folks. And we talk about the same things I talk about with all my friends."

A big topic of discussion? Kids. "They've got a new daughter. I made sure Jay-Z was helping Beyoncé out and not leaving it all to mom and the mother-in-law," Obama said. Being a president or a rap mogul might be a tough job, but being a parent can humble even the best.

Forget the Mitt Romney rap, Nicki Minaj confirms support for Obama

    Paul Buck / EPA

    By Kurt Schlosser, NBC News

President Obama managed to get the truth out of Nicki Minaj in regards to who she's supporting come election time in November.

Despite rapping on a new Lil Wayne mixtape that she was a "Repulican voting for Mitt Romney," the rapper-singer set the record straight on Twitter Monday: "Ha! Thank you for understanding my creative humor & sarcasm Mr. President, the smart ones always do ... *sends love & support.*"

Obama had earlier expressed skepticism about the Romney endorsement during a radio interview with Orlando's Power 95.3, according to a New York Daily News story. "I'm not sure that's actually what happened," Obama said about Minaj backing his GOP rival. "I think she had a song on there, a little rap that said that, but she likes to play different characters."

"Awesome!" Minaj tweeted. "Now I can tell my grandchildren that the 1st black President of the United States took the time to address a Nicki Minaj question."

Retweets by the singer confirmed her delight in having the president understand that she frequently uses alter egos.

But, as the Daily News points out, not everyone on Twitter was impressed with Obama dropping hip-hop knowledge. "What Obama spoke on the record about today: Nicki Minaj lyrics. What he refused to comment on: the Chicago teacher strike," wrote Republican National Committee Chair Reince Priebus.

Megadeth's Dave Mustaine says Obama is behind deadly shootings

    By Rolling Stone

Megadeth leader Dave Mustaine has made no secret of his right-of-center political views, but the singer took an ugly conspiratorialist turn last week in Singapore when he said on stage during a concert Aug. 7 that President Obama is behind recent shooting rampages near Denver and Milwaukee, TMZ reports.

    Watch on YouTube

"My president," Mustaine began, before pausing to pantomime gagging, "is trying to pass a gun ban, so he's staging all of these murders, like the Fast and Furious thing down at the border, you know, Aurora, Colorado, all the people that were killed there. And now the beautiful people at the Sikh temple."

Twelve people were killed and 58 wounded July 20 in Aurora when a gunman opened fire inside a movie theater during a midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises." The suspect, James Holmes, has been charged with 24 counts of first-degree murder and 116 counts of attempted murder. Six people were killed and four wounded Aug. 5 in Oak Creek, Wisc., when a gunman identified as Wade Page, a white supremacist, opened fire at Sikh temple, then killed himself. Fast and Furious was part of a federal sting operation intended to trace the movement of weapons from legal dealers in the United States to the leaders of Mexican drug cartels. The government lost track of some weapons, which were later found at crime scenes in Mexico.

Mustaine went on to muse about where he was going to live "if America keeps going the way it's going, because it looks like it's turning into Nazi America." His comments in Singapore weren't the singer's first foray into right-wing conspiracy theories: Mustaine has also expressed "birther" sentiments about Obama's citizenship. "I know he was born somewhere else than America," Mustaine said in March on a Canadian talk show.

Obama slow jams with Fallon, talks about Secret Service 'knuckleheads'

    By Courtney Garcia, msnbc.com contributor

President Obama appears Tuesday night on what Jimmy Fallon dubbed the “holy crap edition” of his talk show, “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon,” a title made in reference to the Commander-in-Chief’s first appearance on the program.

Shot at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, for a live audience of primarily college students, it was the first stop in the president’s visit to a significant swing state that went blue for the first time in more than 30 years during the 2008 election.

Those hoping to attend waited in line for hours in the rain for tickets, days before the taping. People who didn’t make the cut, according to Fallon, were “students, professors and Joe Biden.”

Fallon and Obama began their stint by "slow jamming the news," a regular segment on the show.

The lights were dimmed, the camera zoomed in, and The Roots slowed it down for the presidential crooner – this time to the soulful song of student loans. Addressing the hot button issue of his North Carolina trip, Obama highlighted his call to congress.  “What we’ve said is simple” he began, “now is not the time to make school more expensive for our young people.”

To which Fallon replied, “Awww yeah. You should listen to the President – or, as I like to call him, the Preezy of the United Steezy…”

The interview continued with a mix of light-hearted banter and a few probing questions for the president, who briefly addressed the current Secret Service scandal when questioned by Fallon.

"The Secret Service, these guys are incredible," Obama said. "They protect me, they protect our girls. A couple of knuckleheads shouldn't detract from that they do. What they were thinking, I don't know. That's why they're not there anymore."

The president, an admitted fan of the Tar Heels, threw out a few college-centric jokes, poked fun at his former “afro” when Fallon revealed a photo of him from his college days, and tapped further into his agenda to reduce interest rates on student loans. Obama commented that he and the First Lady, Michelle Obama, “didn't finish paying off all of our student loans until about eight years ago, and I'm president of the United States."

The more serious points of discussion revolved around Obama’s plans to promote college education by reducing student debt, as well as his ongoing energy policies.

On Mitt Romney, Obama's presumptive Republican challenger in the November general election, the president said, “We’re not friends; his wife is lovely," and he "seems like somebody who cares about his family.”

For the most part, it seemed the audience was receptive of the president.

Cameron Parker, a UNC senior and former opinions editor with The Daily Tarheel, told msnbc.com, “People were really stoked by the president. Personally, I think one of the biggest highlights was seeing the president in a less formal setting. He was definitely in politicking mode, but we got to catch him in a more laid back and humorous setting.”

Of one potential dip in the mood, Parker added, “Fallon asked what Obama would pass if he could do one thing without opposition and Obama took a second. It felt like he wavered a bit before giving a pretty diluted answer about energy.”

UNC journalist Jarrad Cole live-tweeted from the event, noting “Fallon is super nervous,” and “Obama says he won't be legalizing marijuana anytime soon.”

Cole’s final tweet from the taping, “Fallon asked Obama if the campaign would get ugly. Obama didn't say no.”

After the event concluded, the late-night host offered his own impression of the show.

Tweeted Fallon, “The President has left the building. This has been one of the most exciting things I've ever done. #ObamaOnFallon.”
