Radiohead fans assemble video of full New York concert

    By Rolling Stone

After a few years away, Radiohead returned to America in style last September with two performances at New York's Roseland Ballroom, then hit the road in support of their record "The King of Limbs". Now you can watch a video of the entire Sept. 29 show that was put together by the hardworking Radiohead fans at Ateaseweb.

    Watch on YouTube

Don't worry, it won't blow out your speakers like a run-of-the-mill cameraphone clip; Radiohead was gracious enough to give the filmmakers a crisp soundboard mix of audio from the show.

Sad polar bear wanders around to sad Radiohead song

    By Jon Blistein, Rolling Stone

Radiohead have partnered with Greenpeace for a poignant new ad that shows a homeless polar bear wandering around London, set to the fittingly unfitting soundtrack of "Everything In Its Right Place" from the Oxford band's beloved album "Kid A." With narration from Jude Law, the clip is being used to help raise awareness about oil companies looking to drill in the Arctic, a landscape already decimated by global warming.

    Watch on YouTube

"We have to stop the oil giants pushing into the Arctic," said Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke on the Greenpeace website. "An oil spill in the Arctic would devastate this region of breathtaking beauty, while burning that oil will only add to the biggest problem we all face, climate change. That’s why I’m backing this campaign."

Still in 'grief and shock' after stage collapse, Radiohead postpones tour dates

    Reuters

The stage at Downsview Park in Toronto is shown in this combination photograph before (top) and after it collapsed on Saturday, June 16, 2012.

    By Rolling Stone

Radiohead released a statement Thursday regarding the stage collapse before the group's recent Toronto show that took the life of drum technician Scott Johnson and injured three other crew members.  The statement notes that the collapse destroyed much of the group's elaborate light show and stage set-up, parts of which are decades old and will take time to replace, forcing them to postpone seven upcoming European tour dates.

"Whilst we all are dealing with the grief and shock ensuing from this terrible accident there are also many practical considerations to deal with," the statement read before listing upcoming shows in Italy, Germany, and Switzerland that will be postponed. The band plans to announce the new dates on June 27th, and they will also offer information for fans who will be unable to attend the rescheduled shows and will be seeking refunds.

"We will make every effort to offer the fans the very best show possible under the circumstances -- thanks for your understanding and support," the statement closed.

Along with the rescheduled dates, it was reported on Tuesday that the Canadian Ministry of Labour identified four companies as being directly responsible for the stage collapse, including Radiohead's own Ticker Tape Touring LLP, as well as Toronto-based Optex Staging and Services, Nasco Staffing Solutions and concert promoter Live Nation.

The number of companies involved in putting on the show, however, has made the investigation a bit complex. "We’re still trying to figure out who owns what, who’s responsible for what," Ministry spokesperson Matt Blajer told the Toronto Star. "You’ve got lighting technicians, sound technicians, the band’s people -- we’re trying to figure out who worked for whom."

On Sunday, following the tragic events at Downsview Park, Radiohead drummer Phil Selway wrote on the band's website: "We have all been shattered by the loss of Scott Johnson, our friend and colleague. He was a lovely man, always positive, supportive and funny; a highly skilled and valued member of our great road crew. We will miss him very much. Our thoughts and love are with Scott's family and all those close to him."

Radiohead on fatal stage collapse: 'We have all been shattered by the loss'

    By Miriam Coleman, Rolling Stone

    Reuters

The stage at Downsview Park in Toronto is shown in this combination photograph before (top) and after it collapsed on Saturday, June 16, 2012.

Radiohead drummer Philip Selway posted a statement on the band's website Sunday mourning drum tech Scott Johnson, who was killed in yesterday's stage collapse:

"We have all been shattered by the loss of Scott Johnson, our friend and colleague. He was a lovely man, always positive, supportive and funny; a highly skilled and valued member of our great road crew. We will miss him very much. Our thoughts and love are with Scott's family and all those close to him."

Johnson, 33, was killed when the top portion of the stage at Downsview Park in Toronto collapsed on top of him during set-up for the concert. The accident happened just an hour before the gates were set to open to the 40,000 ticketholders for the sold-out show, the final date in Radiohead's North American tour.

Radiohead concert canceled after fatal stage collapse

By msnbc.com staff and news services

    Reuters

The stage at Downsview Park in Toronto is shown in this combination photograph before (top) and after it collapsed on Saturday, June 16, 2012.

A stage collapse at Toronto's Downsview Park killed one person and injured at least three others setting up for a Radiohead concert, the CBC reported, citing emergency responders.

One person was transported to Sunnybrook Hospital in serious condition while two others were being assessed at the scene, CBC said.

Downsview Park tweeted that the concert was canceled. Show promoter Live Nation Entertainment also announced the show was canceled.

The collapse occurred at 4 p.m. ET, about an hour before venue gates were scheduled to open.

The man who was killed was briefly pinned under the scaffolding and succumbed to a "crushing injury," an official with Toronto Fire Services told CP24.

"From what I understand the piping which makes up the roof structure where lights and what not are supported collapsed down and there was workers setting up the stage at the time," Toronto Fire Services Captain Mike Strapko told broadcaster CP24.

"The big question is how and that is something we will be working closely with the Ministry of Labor on," Constable Tony Vella told reporters at the scene Saturday night.

Radiohead was scheduled to take the stage a little after 9:30 p.m., CP24 said.

The Weather Channel reported mostly sunny conditions with moderate winds of 5 to 10 mph ahead of the collapse.

Police said a considerable crowd was already waiting for the show when the stage collapsed, CBC reported.

One witness said he "saw the scaffolding around the stage collapsing in on itself and heard the sound of metal hitting metal and within five seconds it was over," CP24 reported.

The park frequently hosts concerts, and 40,000 people were expected for Radiohead's sold-out show, CBC said. The opener was to be Canadian act Caribou.

Radiohead fans expressed dismay on the British modern rock band’s message board.

“So many people lose in this,” said one post by a person calling herself Miss Modular.

“Oh no Person who died today won't get his/her life back,” said a post by spoll.

On Aug. 13, 2011, the Indiana State Fair stage fell, killing seven in a crowd awaiting a Sugarland concert when a windstorm blew in.

Radiohead debuts two new songs as world tour kicks off in Miami

    By Matthew Perpetua, Rolling Stone

Radiohead kicked off their 2012 world tour in Miami Monday night with a setlist heavy on recent material and oldies that fit in comfortably with the band's turn toward chilly, poly-rhythmic electronica. Along with two new non-album songs first performed last year, "Staircase" and "The Daily Mail," the band debuted two even newer tunes at the show, "Identikit" and "Cut a Hole."

"Identikit," which you can hear in the below clip, has the band continuing with the blend of cool electronic textures and delicate interlocking rhythms of last year's "The King of Limbs." Thom Yorke's vocal is just a bit warmer, though, particularly as he repeats the line "I don't want to know."

"Cut a Hole," like "Nude" before it, is the band's version of a slow jam, with Yorke pushing his voice to its most feminine extremes as the band mixes hazy ambience with skeletal, slo-mo funk.

In addition to playing new songs, Radiohead also dusted off the instrumental "OK Computer"-era rarity "Meeting in the Aisle," which they had never performed in concert until Monday night.

Radiohead, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Phish to headline 2012 Bonnaroo

    By Benjy Eisen, Rolling Stone

Bonnaroo has officially confirmed that, as rumored, Radiohead, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Phish will anchor the 11th incarnation of the iconic music festival, which will take place from June 7 to 10 in Manchester, Tenn. The above headliners will be joined by recent Grammy winners Bon Iver and Skrillex, a reunited Beach Boys and comedian Aziz Ansari. All told, more than 150 bands and nearly two dozen comedians will offer fans continuous entertainment on 13 stages over the course of four sleepless days and nights.

True to its formula, Bonnaroo's lineup breaks away from other major U.S. festivals who have often been accused of homogeneous programming. This year, shock rocker Alice Cooper will join the party. So will rapper Ludacris. The festival will honor its jam band roots with performances from Umphrey's McGee, ALOand Dispatch, while also making room for electronic acts with sets by Flying Lotus, Major Lazer and Big Gigantic. Hardcore group Bad Brains will make their inaugural Bonnaroo appearance as will Spectrum Road, an all-star band featuring Cream's Jack Bruce, Living Colour's Vernon Reid, Carlos Santana's wife Cindy Blackman, and revered organist John Medeski.

Indie rock royalty will appear alongside current up-and-comers with sets by the Shins, the Avett Brothers, Foster the People, Feist, tUnE-yArDs, Little Dragon, Mogwai, Dawes and Alabama Shakes among many others.

Watch the best of Bonnaroo 2011 in video highlights

When Bonnaroo launched in 2002, it imagined itself as a cross between Phish's homegrown parties in the Northeast and the New Orlean's Jazz and Heritage Festival in Louisiana. In fact, Bonnaroo organizers brought in some of the creative team behind Phish'sevents, while creating a format that was directly inspired by what they saw at the fairgrounds in New Orleans. In keeping with the spirit that the festival was built upon, when Phish finally performed at Bonnaroo, in 2009, they brought out Bruce Springsteen to jam.

But it's not only jam bands who jam at Bonnaroo-- collaborations are frequent and bands often feel free to take more risks than they might otherwise. A large part of that has to do with the vibe. Fans who make the annual pilgrimage to Tennessee tend to listen to bands, not hype. Multiple musicians seem to comment on this from stage every year and the band-fan respect is so high that it is not uncommon to see artists roaming the grounds and watching other sets from out in the field, when their own duties have been fulfilled.

Tickets will go on sale this Saturday, Feb. 18, at noon ET, at bonnaroo.com.
