Randy Travis pleads not guilty to assault charge

"Look Heart, No Hands" singer Randy Travis is claiming he didn't use his, well, hands. The country superstar pleaded not guilty on Friday in connection with a citation he was issued for simple assault outside a church in Plano, Texas, back in August.

Travis himself appeared in court and a trial date was set for March 11, the Dallas Morning News reports.

    In defense of Randy Travis

On Aug. 23, Travis waded into the middle of an argument between an estranged husband and wife that turned physical, according to the Plano Police Department. When authorities arrived and questioned witnesses, they indicated they had seen a husband and wife involved in a verbal argument. Travis allegedly intervened, which is when he allegedly physically assaulted the husband, whose wife is a female friend of the Grammy winner.

In contrast to his previous run-ins with the law--like his arrest for driving while intoxicated on Aug. 7 -- there are no allegations that Travis was anything but clean and sober at the time.

In fact, the singer's lawyer, Larry Friedman, recently told E! News: "Randy is doing great. Life is good. He's given up drinking alcohol. He's drinking eight glasses of water a day or more. He's on a strict exercise regimen...He's in the best shape he's ever been in his life."

Randy Travis cited for simple assault outside Texas church

Oh Lordy. Randy Travis wasn't holdin' back alright. The country superstar was issued a citation for simple assault Thursday last night outside a church in Plano, Texas, E! News has learned.

The good news? In contrast to his previous run ins with the law -- like his arrest for driving while intoxicated earlier this month -- Travis appears to have been clean and sober.

According to Plano Police Department spokesman David Tilley, Travis waded into the middle of an argument between an estranged husband and wife that turned physical at around 10:30 p.m. A number of witnesses that were part of a field trip that was dispersing in the parking lot of Prestonwood Baptist Church saw the altercation and called 911.

When police arrived and questioned the witnesses, they indicated they had seen a husband and wife involved in a verbal argument. Travis allegedly intervened in the row, which is when he allegedly physically assaulted the husband whose wife is a female friend of the Grammy winner.

Tilley told E! News that Travis was at the location with the unidentified woman because she and her husband are estranged. Travis was not taken into custody. Instead, officers on the scene wrote him up and, as no injuries were reported, all parties declined transport to a local hospital. Another female at the location who was not the wife was given a simple assault citation as well, though it's not known what role she played.

Plano Police Department spokeswoman Heather Bowden also told E! News that the 53-year-old musician was given a Class C citation, the mildest form of citation, and was ordered to appear in Municipal Court, though no word on a date yet.

Today's incident is the latest in a string of troubles for the "Stranger in My Mirror" singer. Aside from his naked bust the other week, Travis was collared in Dallas in February for public intoxication after cops found him allegedly drunk in a parking lot after midnight with a bottle of wine.

That came five months after the embattled entertainer collapsed on stage, purportedly due to a bad reaction to allergy meds. And he's also on the receiving end of a lawsuit filed by his ex-wife and former manager, Elizabeth Travis, which alleged he failed to live up to the terms of their post-divorce management contract.

Randy Travis arrested for DWI after call about man lying in the road

    By Courtney Hazlett, TODAY

Country singer Randy Travis was arrested Tuesday night in Grayson County, Texas, after police responded to a 911 call about a man lying in the road.

The Grayson County Sheriff's office said in a press release that Travis, 53, was charged with driving while intoxicated (a misdemeanor) and retaliation (a felony). The sheriff's office says Travis had "a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath and several signs of intoxication."

The Associated Press reports that a Pontiac Trans Am registered to Travis had driven off a road west of Tioga, Texas, after 11 p.m., according to Tom Vinger, spokesman for the Texas Department of Public Safety. The vehicle had struck several barricades in a construction zone, according to DPS.

At the scene, Travis refused a blood and breath test, but after a search warrant was granted by a judge for a blood specimen, one was later taken at a local hospital, the sheriff's office said.

During transport, Travis made threats to "shoot and kill" the officers working the case, according to the sheriff's office. These threats are what brought about the "retaliation" charge.

Reports elsewhere about the incident claimed that Travis was naked when police arrived on the scene, but Sgt. Ricky Wheeler of the sheriff's office could only confirm that Travis was naked when he was brought into the station.

Bond was set at $1,500 for the DWI charge, and $20,000 for the retaliation charge. After meeting bond, Travis was released at 10:40 a.m. Travis hasn't made any statement about his arrest, and publicists for the singer have not responded to requests for comment.

The AP reports that Travis was charged in February with public intoxication after being spotted in a vehicle parked in front of a church in Sanger, about 20 miles from Tioga, where the entertainer lives.

Randy Travis charged with public drunkenness

RandyTravis was arrested in Sanger, Texas, on Feb. 6 on a charge of public intoxication.

    By Jim Forsyth, Reuters

Grammy award-winning country singer Randy Travis was arrested and charged with public drunkenness on Monday in Sanger, Texas after police found him sitting in his truck, apparently intoxicated, in front of the First Baptist Church.

"An officer detected an odor of alcoholic beverage coming from the person, and he noticed an open bottle of wine in the passenger side of the vehicle," said Sanger Police Chief Curtis Amyx. "His speech was slurred and the officer had a hard time understanding what he was trying to stay."

Amyx said Travis was charged with public intoxication and was released after a couple of hours in the local jail.

He said Travis was parked when the officer spotted him, and he is not charged with drunken driving. Sanger is about an hour north of Dallas.

Travis, 52, is a six-time Grammy Award winner, and is one of the leading stars of country music. He has also been focusing on gospel music, and has won several Dove Awards. As an actor, Travis has appeared in a number of movies, and played a recurring character in the 1990s TV show "Touched by an Angel."

Travis is a North Carolina native, but he owns a ranch in Grayson County, Texas which is west of Sanger. Amyx said he didn't know why Travis -- who he described as cooperative -- was in Sanger.

Public intoxication is a misdemeanor which is punishable by a fine of up to $500.
