Audiences: Movie trailers give too much away, but don't deter attendance

    AP

By Rebecca Ford, The Hollywood Reporter

For the past several months, trailers for this summer's most anticipated films have been hitting the web on a nearly daily basis. But the trailers aimed at getting moviegoers excited for these big-budget releases may be showing off a bit too much.

PHOTOS: "Iron Man 3" premiere: Robert Downey Jr. mingles with Marvel royalty

According to a new study, half (49 percent) of Americans feel that movie trailers these days give away too many of a movie’s best scenes, with a full 16 percent agreeing strongly.

So should the scenes from "Iron Man 3" of Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) saving a group of people falling from an airplane or flying through the air with an army of other Iron Mans be saved for when audiences actually hit the theater?

The findings from the YouGov Omnibus survey taken April 26 to 28 found that the reveal of plot in a trailer deterred only about 19 percent of respondents from wanting to see the movie. In contrast, 24 percent said that it made them want to see the film more.

PHOTOS: "Iron Man 3" Tour: Robert Downey Jr. travels the world

Movie trailers remain extremely important to audiences, playing the biggest role (48 percent) in pushing people to see a movie, followed closely by personal recommendations (46 percent).

So even if a trailer shows some of the best scenes from a film, it doesn't mean people won't see it. And films like "Iron Man 3" still have a few surprises up their sleeves (see the stars talk about what makes the film so surprising here.)

Movie studios have tried a variety of techniques over the past few years when it comes to trailers. Some, such as recent release Oblivion, starring Tom Cruise, have gone out of their way to avoid showing major surprises in the plot. And Lionsgate's "Hunger Games" trailers didn't show any of the footage from the actual arena where the fighting took place.

What remains important to moviegoers when they actually sit down in the theater is that there's a good plot or storyline to the film (77 percent), followed by the cast (45 percent), the genre (22 percent), the director (20 percent) and the book or play it’s based on (15 percent).

'World War Z' trailer pits Brad Pitt against mountains of zombies

By Cody Delistraty, NBC News contributor

After going way over budget and undergoing script rewrites and re-shoots, "World War Z" is finally coming to the screen -- and it looks to have all the trappings of a thrilling zombie blockbuster.

    Watch on YouTube

Just as director Marc Forster (of "Quantum of Solace" fame) has been working against the clock, budget problems, and unhappy producers to finish the film, so, too, Gerry Lane (Brad Pitt) must beat the odds. With only 90 days to stop a zombie apocalypse, Lane, a United Nations worker, must leave his family to hunt for clues around the globe, interview survivors, and find out how to stop the zombies.

    Paramount Pictures

"I think these things have a weakness," Pitt's character says.

According to the latest trailer, which dropped Monday, something in Russia may hold the key. As Lane says "weakness," the trailer shows a boy crouching as zombies run past him, paying him no attention even while destroying everything else in their path. So what exactly is the secret then? It’s tough to tell, but Lane must leave his family to find it.

Naturally, there are some stunning visual effects, such as when a plane is blown open in flight, à la the "Iron Man 3" trailer. There are mountains of fast zombies, which are nothing like those in "The Walking Dead" or the original "Dawn of the Dead" films. No, the "World War Z" zombies move, climb and destroy with incredible pace. In fact, the newly released poster has a whole swarm (herd? gaggle? army?) of zombies piled atop one another, mercilessly pulling a helicopter out of the sky.

And, of course, lest we forget, there’s also the genre's hallmark: super serious dialogue. "I can’t leave my family," Pitt’s character says. "Don't pretend your family is exempt when we talk about the end of humanity!" a stern officer volleys back.

Over-the-top dialogue aside, the trailer shows that "World War Z," based on Max Brooks' novel of the same name, straddles action and mystery with equal importance. And we can’t wait to follow Brad Pitt and company along for the ride.

The film hits US theaters on June 21.

'Star Trek Into Darkness' trailer: Benedict Cumberbatch gets brutal

    Paramount Pictures

Benedict Cumberbatch brings a brutal touch to the new "Star Trek Into Darkness" trailer.

    By Ree Hines, TODAY contributor

Fans of the "Star Trek" franchise have been waiting for more details about Benedict Cumberbatch's villain in the upcoming "Into Darkness" sequel, but little was known about the character -- until now.

Cumberbatch was first rumored to be playing classic "Trek" baddie Khan in the film, but in December, a caption for an official still from the film revealed the character to be John Harrison, a complete unknown. A newly-released international trailer fills in the blanks.

Harrison isn't just any formidable foe -- he's a turncoat, a former top agent for Starfleet bent on destruction.

"You think your world is safe. It is an illusion," a completely dastardly Harrison teases. "Enjoy these final moments of peace."

Of course, James T. Kirk has no intention of allowing Harrison any peace at all.

"I watched you murder innocent men and women," the Enterprise's leading man warns. "I will make you answer for what you did."

But the threat of repercussions does little to dissuade Cumberbatch's character, who vows to "walk over your cold corpses."

Yikes! Watch what else the trailer reveals below:

'Hangover 3' trailer sees a giraffe come to a bad end

    By Cody Delistraty, NBCNews.com contributor

Not even Hollywood insiders could’ve predicted the success of the low-budget, boys-go-to-Vegas themed “Hangover” movie series. The 2009 original went on to snag a Golden Globe, launch Bradley Cooper and Zach Galifianakis’ careers, and end up spawning two sequels. The trilogy that no one thought would become a trilogy is coming to a close, and the first full-length "Hangover Part III" trailer, released Thursday, is being well-received by fans of the series.

In the movie, the Wolf Pack returns to Las Vegas and to all sorts of madness. Mr. Chow is back. Men in frightening pig masks confront the gang. And perhaps most inexplicably, Galifianakis’ Alan is happily driving a giraffe down the highway – that is, until an unfortunate accident that causes some serious destruction.

The trailer starts off melancholic with Schubert’s “Ave Maria” playing over a scene of a funeral. Turns out, it’s Alan’s dad’s funeral. More surprisingly, it’s Alan singing.

“My god,” Phil (Cooper) whispers to Stu (Ed Helms). “He has the voice of an angel.”

Hearing Alan, a bearded man-child, sing such a classically refined song, even though his father has just died, throws us right back into the weird and fantastically vulgar world of “The Hangover.” Heather Graham makes a return, “Bridesmaids’” Melissa McCarthy shares a lollipop with Alan (love at first sight), and the Wolf Pack is back to getting trashed and making more horrible decisions.

Yet, with the plot still generally under wraps, we have to wonder where Doug (Justin Bartha) is during the trailer? Do we have another kidnapping on our hands?

Angry with Stu, Allen presciently tells him, “We’ve been on a lot of adventures together but it seems like you haven’t learned anything. Anything!”

If the boys have learned anything, they should check the hotel’s rooftop first.

“The Hangover Part III” hits theaters May 24.

'Amelie,' 'Eternal Sunshine' fans should watch for 'Mood Indigo'

    Studio Canal

Audrey Tautou and Romain Duris star in "Mood Indigo."

By Cody Delistraty , NBC News contributor

“Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” might be one of the most inventive, mind-bogglingly fascinating films ever made. Michel Gondry, who directed and co-wrote the film, is a Frenchman keen on breaking molds and delivering his unfettered Technicolor imagination to the big screen. His films truly earn the “indie” moniker.

His latest, “Mood Indigo,” is based on Boris Vian’s 1947 novel “L’Ecume des Jours” (“The Foam of the Days”), a tale that explores the relationship between Colin, an affluent inventor of a pianocktail (an inexplicable combination of piano and cocktail), and Chloe, who gets sick when a water lily enters her lung. The only cure? To be always surrounded with fresh flowers -- an expensive, lifelong ordeal that could take Colin to the poorhouse.

Sound a tad twee? A bit contrived? Perhaps, but we’ll chalk it up to imagination. Besides, we have faith in the film, if for no other reason than the two leads, who are beautiful and imaginative in their own right. Audrey Tautou, known best to American audiences for her turn as the eponymous Montmartre waitress in “Amelie,” and the rugged Romain Duris, who starred in “The Beat That My Heart Skipped,” can play a wide range of romance and drama.

The trailer proves immensely charming with Colin professing to Chloe, “I feel like my whole life depends on this precise moment” in the first bit of dialogue. The vibrant color scheme follows Gondry’s other masterpiece, “The Science of Sleep,” and his imagination can be seen in the DJ-controlled ice rink, morphing room, and the cloud car contraption the characters float around in.

When the ever-popular "Ho Hey" from The Lumineers kicks in around the :50 mark, it all becomes rather irresistable.

    Watch on YouTube

We’d like to see a little more of Gad Elmaleh (“Midnight in Paris”), arguably France’s most popular funnyman, and Omar Sy (“The Intouchables”), but it’s tough to complain. While he directed the miserable “The Green Hornet” and the dull, rather humorless “Be Kind Rewind,” Gondry looks to have come up with another winner in “Mood Indigo.”

The film will be released in France on April 24.

'Man of Steel' trailer shows a majestic Superman

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, NBC News

Secret identities can be problematic. Like, say you could save an entire school bus full of kids when the bus sinks into a body of water, but it might mean that they discover you're Superman.

What're you gonna do? Let them drown? That's the dilemma for young Clark Kent in the new "Man of Steel" trailer, which gives you the idea that being plunked down into Smallville isn't the easiest possible transition for a superpowered kid.

Those of us who still mourn Christopher Reeve, long for the iconic version of this hunky, clean-cut hero, can feel the legacy's in good hands after watching this trailer. British actor Henry Cavill, best-known from "The Tudors," is majestic and powerful in the few glimpses we get of him in full Supe costume.

"Man of Steel" opens June 14.

Tom Cruise or Will Smith -- who's the best hero for a post-apocalypse Earth?

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, NBC News

Some say the world will end in fire, some say in ice, wrote Robert Frost. But this week, two new movie teasers present their own takes on Earth's eventual demise. One says the world will end with Will Smith's son running though abandoned jungles, chased by monkeys, one says it will end with Tom Cruise and Morgan Freeman hiding out under a devastated Earth's surface.

    Columbia Pictures, Universal

    Follow @ NBCNewsEnt

Will Smith and his 14-year-old son Jaden star in "After Earth," due out June 7. Famed twistmaster M. Night Shyamalan directs. In the film, the Smiths crash-land on a hostile Earth 1000 years after humans have bailed on it.

"Son, this is not training. This is a Class 1 quarantined planet," Will Smith's character, an injured general, warns his son. "Everything on this planet has evolved to kill humans."

The Earth of "After Earth" looks a lot like ours now, only jungly and wild, and the Smiths have brought some kind of flying suits that allow them to dive off cliffs and soar like hanggliders.

    Watch on YouTube

Apparently, the film follows Jaden Smith's character as he sets out to find the rescue beacon that could save his dying father. Sure, "Karate Kid" was one thing, but one wonders if fans of Will Smith will be satisfied if his teen son ends up dominating the movie.

Still, as one YouTube viewer wrote, "If Will Smith is in it, then I'm watching it!

Tom Cruise's "Oblivion," opening April 12, features a similar devastated Earth, but a different approach, based on director Joseph Kosinski's graphic novel.

Cruise plays Jack Harper (not Jack Reacher, that one opens Dec. 21). Harper repairs the drone satellites that patrol an almost-empty Earth, hunting down the surviving aliens who attacked the planet decades before.

"The last Super Bowl was played right here," he says, standing in a crumbled stadium that looks more like a volcanic crater than an arena. "Sixty years ago, Earth was attached. We won the war, but they destroyed half the planet. Everyone's been evacuated. Nothing human remains."

Of course, we know that can't be true. Cruise meets up with Morgan Freeman, discovers there are surviving humans on the planet, and locks and loads.

Both Smith and Cruise have dealt with the end of Earth before -- Cruise in "War of the Worlds" and Smith in "I Am Legend." Now, in 2013, moviegoers can compare the two stars' approaches.

'Great Gatsby' trailer features Jay-Z, Kanye West song

    By Bruna Nessif, E! Online

Dang, we didn't know they got down like that in the 1920s.

In the newly released trailer for Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan and Tobey Maguire, we hear Kanye West and Jay-Z's "No Church in the Wild" -- a little odd, yes -- under Nick Carraway's (Maguire) voice before witnessing what seems to be one helluva "gathering" along with a very dapper DiCaprio.

    Follow @ msnbc_ent

"New York, 1922," Maguire says. "The tempo of the city had changed sharply, the buildings were higher, the parties were bigger, the morals were looser and the liquor was cheaper. The restlessness approached hysteria."

READ: Why does Will Smith think he's "the most natural choice" to play Barack Obama?

Sounds like a good time to us, and it looks that way, too -- people swinging in the air and dancing up a storm, confetti and balloons everywhere, and oh yes, fireworks -- just an ordinary get-together in New York during the '20s. But even that doesn't compare to the attraction of a certain man.

Watch the clip and see how the recent college grad Carraway, along with practically everyone else, becomes transfixed on this wealthy -- and cool -- guy named Gatsby (DiCaprio).
