Tyler Perry lumbering, lost in confusing, dismal 'Alex Cross'

    Summit Entertainment

    Tyler Perry as "Alex Cross."

By Todd McCarthy, The Hollywood Reporter

REVIEW: You almost feel sorry for Tyler Perry, stepping out of his own universe for the first time to try to expand his range and finding himself in something as thoroughly dismal as Alex Cross. An unpleasant film from the sadistic behavior of its loathsome villain to the grubbiness of its visual palette, this stands as a substandard attempt to bring novelist James Patterson's intuitive cop back to the big screen. All the same, it will be interesting to observe if much of Perry's generally loyal audience turns out to see him in a major change of pace, as well as if non-fans are curious to check him as a potential action hero. Whatever the opening is, legs are doubtful.

Among other things, Alex Cross features a mano-a-mano climax that is a strong contender for the title of worst major fight scene ever to grace a major motion picture. The lighting is dark, it's framed so tightly you can't tell who's hitting whom or what's going on, and the camera's intense jitters make it a virtual parody of filmmakers trying to make something exciting by shaking the camera. It's incredible one of the six producers didn't notice this and demand a retake.

Not directly based on any single one of Patterson's novels about the brilliant investigator and forensic psychologist but credited nonetheless as an adaptation of "Cross," the script by Mark Moss and Kerry Williamson takes the man back to his pre-Washington and FBI days, when he was a cop on the Detroit police force (though some might notice that, for financial reasons, the film was shot largely in Cleveland). This repositioning suits the fact that Perry is about 20 years younger than Morgan Freeman was when he played the role in "Kiss the Girls" in 1997 and "Along Came a Spider" four years later.

VIDEO: 'Alex Cross' trailer pits Tyler Perry against Matthew Fox

This is a nasty psycho-killer film plain and simple, centered on a wily and well-armed sicko who flat-out announces that, “Inflicting pain is a crucial part of my true calling.” In order to look more cadaverously sinister, Matthew Fox (Lost) might have shed more weight for a role than anyone since Christian Bale went skeletal for "The Machinist."  As is exhibited all too vividly at the outset, Picasso -- as he quickly becomes known for good reasons -- loves to torture, to feel his victims' pain, you might say, and it's up to Cross and his boyhood friend and partner Tommy Kane (Edward Burns) to track the maniac down.

Unfortunately, there's no preparation for the way Cross lays out how the first mass murder went down almost as soon as he arrives on the crime scene, apparently so accurately that his visions of what Picasso wrought are simultaneously presented as fact. He would seem to have an unnatural gift for sussing out a bad guy's M.O., but we never learn anything about this ability, other than that the FBI has noticed it and is paging him to D.C. The idea of moving doesn't sit too well with Cross' wife (Carmen Ejogo), who announces she's pregnant with their third child. But domestic decisions will have to wait until the maniac is brought down.

On precious little evidence, Cross thinks he has Picasso's intentions figured out -- he seems to be targeting the extravagantly rich -- but he and Tommy soon find the victims are too close to home. Picasso torments Cross with taunting phone calls and always seems a step or two ahead of his pursuer, for whom the hunt becomes a personal obsession.

Director Rob Cohen takes no time to set up scenes properly to build suspense or, as in the case of the climax and another action interlude involving a car crash, to even make them plausible. The camera shakes big time in another sequence when a major lead is discovered that might lead to the killer, and a coda set in Bali is preposterous in the way one of the characters spews out information he has no need to disclose.

Towering over the other actors (he's 6-foot-5), Perry lumbers around with a degree of charisma but a lack of emotional range or variety in line delivery. Although watchable and certainly different from the usual run of leading men, he's not really all that interesting in this character. Fox is plenty convincing as the cretin without the merest morsel of humanity, while the other actors just cash their paychecks, notably Jean Reno as a French industrialist with an unexplained penchant for turning the city of Detroit around.

Matthew Fox seeks pies, ice cream after massive 'Alex Cross' weight loss

    Summit Entertainment

    Matthew Fox in "Alex Cross."

    By Marc Malkin, E! Online

Want to make Matthew Fox happy? Feed him some pies, ice cream, cookies, pasta and bread. The former "Lost" star has a lot of eating to do ever since losing a staggering 40 pounds to play a frighteningly thin and ripped tattooed serial killer in the upcoming thriller "Alex Cross."

Get the details on Matthew McConaughey's shrinking physique

"My mother hated it," Fox says with a laugh. "She's Italian and she's a fantastic cook and loves to feed her son more than anything. She couldn't stand it. It really upset her."

Fox attained his scary physique with the help of Simon Waterson, the same trainer responsible for Daniel Craig's hot James Bond bod, Jake Gyllenhaal's unforgettable chest and abs in "Prince of Persia" and the pumped up pecs of Chris Evans in "Captain America."

"We worked really hard on this for five months," Fox said. "The training sessions were mostly circuit training. You're going non-stop from exercise to exercise, never taking any breaks for about an hour and a half. I was burning a lot of calories and working on certain muscle groups. It was very strategic on his part and very gradual."

Mark Wahlberg's muscles leave "Bridesmaids" funny lady speechless

In fact, he's only gained back about 15 pounds since finishing the flick. "I'm taking my time to put it back on but eating all the things I love to eat," Fox said. "I have a terrible sweet tooth. All those pies, ice cream and cookies were completely out the window when I was training. Pasta and bread were pretty much non-existent in the diet as well."

"Alex Cross" is based on novelist James Patterson's detective series. Tyler Perry takes on the starring role previously played by Morgan Freeman in "Kiss the Girls" and "Along Came a Spider."

"Like most everybody, I didn't really know Tyler Perry from anything other than the stuff he'd done up until this point," Fox said. "A really dark sort of revenge movie that was going to require a huge amount of drama and emotional intensity certainly isn't something we had seen from him in the past. But let me tell you, everyone who has seen the film really feels Tyler has delivered on that."

    Ouch! Jake Gyllenhaal gets tased

And then some -- like an elbow to Fox's head.

"We were doing this final mano a mano fight to the death on this catwalk above this old theater and it was something like 1:00 in the morning and we'd been at it for 10 hours," Fox remembered. "We're standing on a two-foot wide catwalk trying to make these huge roundhouse punches look good and Tyler caught me with an elbow. He apologized to me so many times. But it's OK. Things like that happen all the time."

Alex Cross is in theaters Oct. 19.

Tyler Perry's Atlanta studio set ablaze, investigation underway

    By Courtney Garcia, TODAY.com

More than 100 firefighters, 13 engines and 12 trucks responded to a four-alarm fire at Tyler Perry’s studio complex in Atlanta on Tuesday night, the source of which has yet to be determined.

According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, an emergency call was placed at 8:41 p.m. when the first alarm was sounded, and a fire rescue team arrived minutes later. Upon their entrance, the second and third alarms went off, with multiple buildings involved in the blaze. At the sound of the fourth alarm, reinforcement teams were dispatched from three other counties, and the fire was brought under control approximately an hour after the first crew had arrived. Fire officials said there was partial collapse to the front area of one building.

"It was all in flames," Dorothy Ware, who lives in a high-rise apartment next door to the studio complex, told The AJC.

Ware said the flames “shot as high as nearby trees,” roughly equivalent to the height of a six-story building, and further remarked, "The building started popping. Whatever the fire was hitting, was blowing up. There were plenty of sparks coming over here where we are."

A portion of actor/director Tyler Perry's studio complex went up in flames as a four-alarm fire burned in the backlot of his Atlanta facility. NBC's Thanh Truong reports.

Perry and his staff were on site while the fire was extinguished, and left the premises around 11 p.m. with instruction not to speak with the media. No injuries have been reported at this time, though the fire forced dozens of senior citizens out of a nearby assisted living facility, reports CBS affiliate WSB-TV.

In a statement to Forbes, a spokesperson for Perry commented Wednesday, "Atlanta firefighters responded immediately to a fire which damaged the backlot façade of one of the buildings at Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta. We are grateful that there were no injuries, and that 99 percent of the damage is limited to the backlot facade. Mr. Perry wishes to express his heartfelt thanks to the Atlanta fire department for their professionalism in their quick response and limiting the damage."

According to Perry’s studio site, the multi-million dollar premises, located in Southwest Atlanta, cover 60 acres and include five sound stages, a 5-acre pond, a theater, chapel, commissary, a gymnasium, art department, and post-production facility. My Fox Atlanta reported Wednesday that fire trucks circled “what appeared to be the Ruby Dee-Ossie Davis studio, the Cicely Tyson studio and the Sidney Poitier studio,” and authorities told WSB-TV they believed the fire began on a four-story sound stage, which was severely damaged, but that they were investigating the matter.

The studio is reportedly functioning despite the blaze, and suffered primarily exterior damage, with some water damage on its interior.

Reports AJC, at least one fire truck remained at the studios at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Tyler Perry accuses Atlanta police of racial profiling

    By Natalie Finn, E! Online

Tyler Perry says he was a victim of some not-so-civil treatment by Atlanta police.

An internal investigation has been launched into the filmmaker and TV producer's claim that two officers acted hostilely toward him during a traffic stop because he is black, and only relented when a black officer showed up and apparently recognized Perry, E! News confirmed Wednesday.

So, what does Perry have to say about the incident?

The "Good Deeds" director described his version of events in detail on his Facebook page on Sunday, writing that he was driving to the airport from his Atlanta-area studio without his usual security detail and was pulled over for making a left turn from a right lane -- a maneuver he attempted to ensure he wasn't being followed.

According to Perry, the officer who approached his window asked, "Why do you think someone would be following you?" After which, he wrote, another cop banged on the passenger-side window.

The second officer, Perry wrote, asked, "What's wrong with you?" and when the driver's-side officer explained that Perry thought he might be followed, the officer repeated, "Why do you think someone is following you? What's wrong with you?"

Before he could answer, Perry recounted, the driver's-side officer ordered him to put his foot on the brake, then reached for the car's on/off switch.

More from E: Kim Kardashian, movie star? "Very much possible," says Tyler Perry

"I finally realized that he thought that switch was the key," Perry wrote, "so I told him that it wasn't the key he was grabbing. I reached down into the cup holder to get the key, not realizing that the key had a black leather strap on it. As I grabbed it they both tensed up and I dropped it as I heard my mother's voice from when I was a little boy.

"My mother would always say to me, 'If you get stopped by the police, especially if they are white policemen, you say 'yes sir' and 'no sir,' and if they want to take you in, you go with them. Don't resist, you hear me? Don't make any quick moves, don't run, you just go.'"

Perry claims that the officers continued to badger him about why he might be followed.

"It was so hostile. I was so confused," he wrote. "It was happening so fast that I could easily see how this situation could get out of hand very quickly. I didn't feel safe at all. But one officer stopped his questioning and said, 'We may not let you go. You think you're being followed, what's wrong with you?' At this point, I told him that I wanted to get out of the car. I wanted the passersby to see what was happening."

More from E: The richest guy in Hollywood is not who you think

When he got out, Perry wrote, another cop pulled up -- a black cop -- and "took one look" at Perry, "an 'oh no' look on his face."

"He immediately took both officers to the back of my car and spoke to them in a hushed tone," he continued. "After that, one of the officers stayed near his car while one came back, very apologetic. I said all of that to say this: do you see how quickly this could have turned for the worse?"

"RACIAL PROFILING SHOULD BE A HATE CRIME INVESTIGATED BY THE FBI!!!" Perry concluded.

The Atlanta Police Department said in a statement to E! News that they have confirmed that Perry was involved in a traffic stop with two officers and that his claims, "as expressed by him publicly," have been referred to the department's Office of Professional Standards.

"OPS has opened an investigation to determine if Mr. Perry's claims can be substantiated, and whether any departmental policies or procedures were violated during the stop," police said.
