Bob Seger fulfills 79-year-old coma patient's dream

    TODAY

Evie Branan woke from a coma saying she wanted to see a Bob Seger concert. And so she did.

    By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, TODAY

Evie Branan, 79, woke from a five-year coma in 2011 and had one thought: She wanted to go to a Bob Seger concert. Thursday night in Michigan, she got her wish.

"I loved it," Branan told Mlive.com of the concert at the Palace at Auburn Hills. "It was fantastic."

Branan, who'd seen five Seger concerts before her coma, suffered a massive stroke in 2007 and was in a care center for years, unable to speak.

    Follow @ TODAY_ent

After she hit her head in 2011, she awoke, and Branan told NBC News, "The first thing I said was, 'I want to go to a Bob Seger concert."

Administrators at Willowbrook Manor, the care center where Branan had been staying, teamed up with Seger's employees to make the concert happen. Branan didn't just get to attend, she met Seger, his band, and family, and was even greeted by complete strangers at the concert who'd heard her story, Mlive reports.

Branan's taste in music may seem young for her age -- though Seger himself is 67 -- but she complains that not everyone in Willowbrook Manor is quite so with it.

"They're too old here," she told NBC of the Willowbrook men. "They've got one foot on a banana peel and one on the grave."

'Game of Thrones' actor has ear bitten off

    YouTube

Clive Mantle in his role as Lord Jon Umber on HBO's "Game of Thrones."

    By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, TODAY

It's not unlike a scene that could take place in Westeros. "Game of Thrones" actor Clive Mantle, who plays Lord Jon Umber, better known as The Greatjon, on the first season of the HBO show, had part of his ear bitten off on Sunday, the BBC reports.

Mantle, 55, was in a Travelodge hotel in Newcastle, England, when he was bitten. A spokesman for the actor's agent told the BBC that Mantle asked other guests to keep the noise down and then was pinned to the floor and attacked. The top part of his right ear was bitten off, but surgeons at the Royal Victoria Infirmary sewed it back on, the spokesman said.

    Follow @ TODAY_ent

The BBC reports that one man has been charged in the incident and will appear in court next month. Another man was released on bail and a third released without charge.

Mantle was in Newcastle starring in a play, "The Ladykillers," which was supposed to continue its run in Salford, England on Tuesday. A publicist for the play told the BBC she did not know when Mantle would be able to rejoin the cast.

    Watch on YouTube

In one episode of "Game of Thrones," Mantle's character has two of his fingers bitten off by Robb Stark's direwolf, though his ears remain untouched.

'Hall bitten by Oates' story sparks 'Maneater' headline of year

    By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, TODAY

First things first: Not THE Hall, and THE Oates. 1980s pop wonders Daryl Hall and John Oates are still touring together and apparently still friends. And one biting the other? They can't go for that, noooo, no can do.

    SanduskyRegister.com

Sandusky Register design desk chief Mike Schaffer gets credit for this music-themed headline, while things weren't so rocking for Roger B. Oates and Ronald Mantz, who face charges in Ohio for the case involving Scott Hall.

That's not the case, however, for a pair of men from Ohio. According to the Sandusky Register newspaper, Roger Oates, 48, bit the eyebrow off his neighbor, Scott Hall, 40, in a weird confrontation that might have never made news outside their neighborhood if not for the men's last names. (Although come to think of it, eyebrow-biting is not your normal attack move, "Private Eyes" and all.)

The case earned even more fame when the Sandusky Register design desk chief Mike Schaffer slapped a "Maneater: Hall bitten by Oates" headline on the story, leaving media critic Jim Romenesko to declare, "Contest over: We have the headline of the year."

    Follow @ TODAY_ent

"Maneater," which contains the prescient line, "Watch out, boy, she'll chew you up," reached No. 1 on the Billboard charts for Hall & Oates (the singers) in 1982.

But the reporter on the story was too young to get the reference, according to jimromenesko.com.

“I’d never heard of them,” reporter Emil Whitis told Romenesko. “The sheriff deputies were rolling with laughter and I didn’t get it. Then they played the song for me.”

No one, apparently, told Whitis he was out of touch, or out of time. (another 1980s Hall & Oates hit).

Forecast? Furry! Cat moseys through live weather report

    By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, TODAY

The weather forecast? Partly furry with a chance of purring. Or that's what viewers of the Spanish-language channel Univision might have thought on Monday.

    Watch on YouTube

When meteorologist Eduardo Rodriguez was giving the weather report in the channel's Miami studio, the tip of a cat's tail suddenly became apparent in the picture. The white and grey tabby then found something interesting in the corner of the weather set, leaving it to strike a pose familiar to all cat owners, the "Look at my butt! Look, look at my butt!" move.

    Follow @TODAY_Clicker

Offscreen, other Univision anchors cracked up at the sight of the uninvited visitor, but Rodriguez stayed professional and kept delivering the weather report. Later, however, he had fun with the incident on Twitter, tweeting that the cat had come to investigate whether it would continue to be cold.

Looks like the channel had a good attitude about the whole thing. Univision posted the video to YouTube with the note, "There are several cats that have turned the Univision parking lot into their home and sometimes they make it into the studio. This cat just walked right through the weatherman's report."

Reporter almost hit by truck during segment on crosswalk safety

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, NBC News

Reporter Doug Brauner was filming a report on crosswalk safety for Sacramento's KOVR-TV when the danger of being a pedestrian was truly brought home.

As Brauner prepared to demonstrate when a pedestrian would have the right of way at a busy intersection, a black pickup truck zoomed up to where he was standing. The truck didn't stop for the red light, didn't yield to Brauner who was stepping into the street, and wheeled into a dangerous right turn at high speed.

    Follow @ msnbc_ent

    "Really? Really?" said Brauner.

"Light 'em up!" called the anchors watching the video on a later broadcast.

And that's just what happened. A black-and-white California Highway Patrol car had been parked at the intersection so officer Adrian Quintero could offer safety tips for Brauner's news segment. But when the truck tore through, the officer took off after the driver, all caught on camera.

Brauner later reported that the driver was being held on suspicion of drunk driving. At eight in the morning.

Photos of the driver taking a breathalyzer test and being arrested can be seen here.

Did dolphin deaths have anything to do with nearby rave?

    Follow @ msnbc_ent
    By Courtney Garcia, msnbc.com contributor

Two dolphins in Switzerland may have died from ingesting a heroin substitute after a rave party was held near their pool, the Daily Mail is reporting. But the owner of the facility says the deaths came weeks after the event, and claims animal activists are circulating an untrue story.

Shadow and Chelmers, two dolphins living in Conny-Land Marine Park in Lipperswil, died within five days of each other back in November. The Daily Mail reports that the deaths came after the park rented land near the dolphins' training pool to a weekend rave attended by thousands.

But Conny-Land owner Roberto Gasser told the Huffington Post UK that "[The dolphins] died two weeks after the party, so the party had nothing to do with it at all. This is an untrue story let out by animal activists which might be the cause of the death of our animals."

Gasser told the Huffington Post that the facility has rented its sound-proof chateau every weekend for a decade, and that a veterinarian and others were on site the night of the rave in question. "Nothing was heard or disturbed the animals," he said.

Gasser said the medication could only have been given to the animals in food, and that signs of forced entry were found at the food preparation area. The Huffington Post quotes Gasser as calling the deaths an "attack" and "a planned strike."

Animal-rights activists originally blamed the deaths on the event's techno music, suggesting it “disoriented and distressed” the marine animals affecting their immune system. Later reports claimed that antibiotics given by zoo vets could have caused the deaths.

But a new toxicology report leaked on May 6 says forensic scientists found the heroin substitute Buprenorphine in the animals’ urine, and it likely contributed to their death, the Mail reports.

The Daily Mail quotes Conny-Land keeper Nadja Gasser as telling the media that"(Chelmers') death was very drawn out and painful," adding that "He was shaking all over and was foaming at the mouth."

According to Change.org, Shadow and Chelmers are the seventh and eighth dolphins to die in Conny-Land in the past three years.

He's a real trooper: Man walks across Australia in 'Star Wars' Stormtrooper costume

    Cameron Spencer / Getty Images

Jacob French walks with patient Helena Kantarelis at the Sydney Children's Hospital after walking from Perth to Sydney in a "Star Wars" Stormtrooper costume.

    By Courtney Garcia, msnbc.com contributor

The Stormtrooper outfit from “Star Wars” may be iconic, but it doesn't seem like a good choice for a long bout of physical exertion.

But Jacob French, a 21-year-old fan of the film franchise, chose the warrior wear as his own suit of armor on his nine-month journey crossing Australia to raise money for the Starlight Children’s Foundation.

    Follow @ msnbc_ent

French began in Perth in July 2011 and finished up in Sydney Thursday, walking between 2,000 and 3,000 miles all total.

The UK's Metro newspaper reports that French walked over 10 hours a day from Monday to Friday, losing over 26 pounds, destroying seven pairs of shoes, and, in the process, raising around $100,000 for the charity.

French admitted that dressing like one of Darth Vader’s infamous soldiers presented a bit of a challenge.

“The idea of the Stormtrooper outfit was to create a bit more attention,” French told Australian newspaper The Magnet, Metro reports. “I wore it in a half marathon in Melbourne and had to have it modified for this to make it a bit more flexible. It gets pretty hot -- the helmet is like wearing a bucket on your head.”

    Cameron Spencer / Getty Images

French poses with a patient at Sydney Children's Hospital.

In addition to the heavy garb, French pushed a wooden cart around with him containing his clothes and equipment.

According to Yahoo! TV Sunrise, the weather was equally grueling. The Australian news program describes six weeks of rain, hail and thunder during the walk, and reports that French, who camped along the way, was once nearly struck by lightning.

French created a blog, TrooperTrek.com, to encourage donations and chart his progress. The money he raised will go towards the Starlight Foundation’s programs, which help sick children in hospitals across Australia.

For French, it was a labor of love, particularly since the activity itself is not necessarily his thing.

“It might have been easier if I didn’t wear the suit," he told Yahoo! TV. "I don’t actually enjoy walking that much.”

A group of Greek protesters found an alternative use for their classic food staples recently, ambushing a local news anchor with eggs and yogurt during a live broadcast of his news show.

According to the New York Daily News, 17 rioters masked by handkerchiefs broke into the Epiros TV1 newsroom April 6 and opened fire with food. The group was angered by journalist Panagiotis Bourchas’ recent interview with Chrysi Avyi, a spokesman for far-right political organization, Golden Dawn, and apparently felt the need to demonstrate their displeasure explicitly.

Bourchas, who was mid-interview at the time, remained calm despite the unexpected events. While his guest immediately walked out of sight, the news anchor stood up, brushed the goop from his jacket and wiped any carnage off his laptop. He took the beating for about a minute before finally unclipping his earpiece and exiting the stage.

In addition to the grocery assault, the protesters chanted loudly. Their message was, “Keep neo-Nazis off your show,” Epiros TV1 told multiple sources.

Greece has seen a rise in neo-Nazi affiliates such as Golden Dawn since last year’s economic crisis unfolded. Foreign Policy describes Golden Dawn as “a fringe Fascist group despised by most Greeks.” Members of the organization have publicly proposed violence as a means of removing undocumented immigrants from the country, Athens News reports.

TV station mistakenly airs wrong clip, shows meteorologist swearing

    Follow @ msnbc_ent
By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, NBC News

Technology is supposed to help us out at work, but when it gets in the way instead, it's easy to get frustrated. That happened Wednesday to Rachael Plath, meteorologist at KRDO-TV in Colorado Springs -- but her reaction wasn't supposed to be aired.

In the video clip below, Plath is seen giving the weather forecast on air, when the graphics behind her change, apparently prematurely. Plath suddenly exclaims "Son of a b----, why is this happening!" and walks off the set.

    Watch on YouTube

The video was quickly picked up by The Huffington Post and the U.K.'s Daily Mail, leading to numerous viewers posting sympathetic notes on Plath's Facebook page.

Plath told readers that the segment was prerecorded, not live, and the clip in which she swore was not supposed to be used on-air.

Wrote Robert Borges, "No need to ever feel bad or apologize for being a human being, I once inadvertently dropped an F-bomb at a convent."

Plath gamely responded to the feedback, thanking viewers for their support and noting that she was "trying to shrug it off."

Breathe easy, for 10 hours, with this Darth Vader video

    Twentieth Century Fox

    Luke, you are sleeeeeepy.

    By Kurt Schlosser, NBC News

Are you one of those people who needs some sort of white noise machine to relax or fall asleep? Ever use one of those contraptions to soothe a restless baby? Well, perhaps the sound of a breathing Dark Lord can help.

Forget whales talking or raindrops on a tin roof. If your cranky kid isn't counting stormtroopers in his or her sleep after this, then you might be out of luck.

Witness, 10 hours (!) of Darth Vader breathing:

    Watch on YouTube

All done? Hope you got a meal and some sleep while you were playing that back.

Vader's signature inhale and exhale, otherwise known as breathing, is as recognizable a sound bite as there is in cinema. The only downside of using it in your kid's room may come if you're one of those new parents who likes to check on a sleeping baby to see if he's still breathing. I found that this was tough to do in the dark, when I myself was barely awake. With Vader "in the room," one couldn't be sure who was making all that noise. Although, if your baby breathes like Vader you might want to visit a doctor.

Some of the comments on YouTube -- where the video has 52,000 views of presumably less than 10 hours each -- are pretty fun.

"I watched this last night, thinking it would be great to fall asleep to. Turns out that if I wake up in the middle of the night and hear the *PUF-KTCH* noise, it just makes me terribly frightened of someone being in the room ..." said user DarkAztek.

    Follow @ msnbc_ent

"Somehow I imagine Darth Vader sleeping when I listen to this this longer than 3 minutes. All it needs is some occasional dream mumbling.... "It iiiissss yooouuur deeessssssssssssstinyyyyy"... ...*turns over*....." wrote karaokefreak1.

Whether or not the video freaks you out or returns you to the dark side of a sleepless night, it's further proof that any fan with 10 hours of spare time will always find a way to celebrate "Star Wars."

Think you could fall asleep to that video or use it in some other way? Share your thoughts on Facebook.

Mutant bunny crushed to death by cameraman at news conference

Uwe Meinhold / dapd via AP

The fate of the earless bunny Til, crushed to death by a cameraman, was splashed across German media this week.

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, NBC News

It can't be an easy job, being a cameraman. You've got to haul around and operate heavy equipment, get the shot you need all while staying out of the way of the action, and -- who knew? -- refrain from crushing to death the subject of that day's story.

According to Der Spiegel, a zoo in eastern Germany invited a television camera crew to film a rare earless bunny they had named Til. It was the only earless one in a litter of six.

The zoo wanted to use the film footage in a news conference planned for the next day, zoo director Uwe Dempewolf told the newsmagazine, because "rabbits without ears are pretty rare."

    Follow @ msnbc_ent

Sadly, that news conference was never held, because "during the filming, the cameraman took a step back and trod on the bunny," Dempewolf told the newsmagazine. "He was immediately dead; he didn't suffer. It was a direct hit."

The cameraman told the German newspaper Bild that the bunny was buried in hay, so he didn't realize he was stepping on it until it was too late. Needless to say, the other bunnies are fine.

Der Spiegel reports that Til the bunny has been frozen and now may be stuffed.

'Predator' star Carl Weathers confused with Uganda's Joseph Kony

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, NBC News

    Getty Images, 20th Century Fox

Joseph Kony, Ugandan guerilla leader on left, and Carl Weathers in 1987's "Predator" on the right.

Sometimes, Internet users just like to hold out the bait and see if anyone will bite, even their own friends.

That's the only excuse we can see for the current link making the rounds.

A shot of actor Carl Weathers in a scene from 1987's "Predator" is shown, apparently posted to a number of different Facebook pages, each with a vague but positive caption.

    Follow @ msnbc_ent

The resulting comments make it clear that some readers think the picture is of Ugandan guerilla leader Joseph Kony and are horrified by the thought that someone could be supporting him. Kony has been in the news thanks to the viral video, "Kony 2012," which sparked many to urge that action be taken against Kony, and others to criticize the video's creators.

Then other Facebook users jump in on the person who made the Kony mistake, snarking "Can you even point out Uganda on a map without Google?" or "Do all black people look the same to you?"

The men don't look that much alike, though they both have mustaches, green army caps, and are shot in front of a jungle background. But apparently that's enough to fool a few people. We're wondering how much unfriending then takes place.

Weathers had an earlier weird bit of fame for his "Predator" role. Two actors from that film went on to govern U.S. states, Arnold Schwarzenegger of California and Jesse Ventura of Minnesota, and jokes were common that Weathers would have to step up and govern a state himself. He even appeared on "Saturday Night Live" spoofing the concept.
